Title:
The Way It Should Have Been…SSE Exchange
Author:
Kelia
Characters:
Anakin, Obi-Wan, Jedi Council
Era:
ROTS but AU
Summary:
Anakin and Obi-Wan have returned to the Temple after their mission to rescue Chancellor Palpatine. This is an AU story – the main difference is that Padme does not exist. The other differences are below –
A/N:
This is my submission for the
Sithly Secret Santa Exchange
‘I failed…again.’
Anakin sat on a small bridge overlooking his favorite pond in The Room of a Thousand Fountains aimlessly tossing pebbles into the water below.
He starred unseeing at the ripples the pebbles made in the water trying desperately to settle his frazzled nerves.
‘There’s no coming back from this,’
he thought mournfully.
‘I’ll be expelled for sure.’
He sighed wearily, his shoulders slumping as he reflected on the mission he and Obi-Wan had just returned from. Everything seemed to be going according to plan. He killed Count Dooku and rescued Obi-Wan from certain death despite Chancellor Palpatine’s objections.
‘The Chancellor.’
Anakin closed his eyes, a single tear sliding down his cheek. The tide had turned during the battle with General Grievous. Anakin had led the Chancellor behind a control console on the bridge of the ship, leaving him with the strict command to stay put. Then, he joined Obi-Wan in the battle against the General and his battle droids.
He successfully destroyed the droids, tuning just in time to see Obi-Wan knocked unconscious to the deck. Grievous picked up a discarded electro staff and prepared to drive it into Obi-Wan. Anakin leapt, knocking the staff out of Grievous’ armored hands.
Before he could react, the staff crashed into the transparisteel panel blowing it out into space. Grievous was instantly sucked into space. Anakin had just enough time to cover still unconscious Obi-Wan and grasp desperately onto the control console.
Chancellor Palpatine was quickly swept up in the winds with everything else not bolted down. Anakin’s last glimpse of him came as he flew screaming out into space. Just as the blast doors closed, Anakin felt a surge of bright energy surge through the Force and he knew the Sith Lord had been killed.
That he’d killed the Sith Lord brought him little consolation. He’d failed in the primary task and because of that an innocent man also died. Now here he sat awaiting his punishment while Obi-Wan addressed the Council alone.
“Anakin.” Obi-Wan’s weary voice broke through his reverie. “The Council is ready for you now.”
Anakin turned to face him slowly. “Maybe I’m not ready for the Council,” he replied defiantly.
“Excuse me?” Obi-Wan frowned, eyes narrowing.
Anakin sighed, hanging his head in regret. “I need a minute,” he explained weakly. He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath.
“Anakin, what’s wrong?” Obi-Wan dropped to one knee beside him.
“Am I going to be expelled?” Anakin whispered softly, his eyes locked firmly on the water below.
“What?” Obi-Wan placed his arm on Anakin’s shoulder, squeezing firmly. “Why would you think you were being expelled?”
Anakin crooked his head slightly, his pain filled eyes meeting Obi-Wan’s. “Palpatine is dead because of me,” he replied simply.
Obi-Wan’s mouth dropped open in shock. “You..you can’t blame yourself for his death, Anakin.”
Anakin looked away without replying.
Obi-Wan studied him silently for a moment, sending a soothing wave of comfort through their bond. “Anakin,” he began gently. “You have grown into a strong and wise Jedi. You are a true credit to the Order.”
Anakin gapped at him disbelievingly.
“I..I failed..,”
“You didn’t fail,” Obi-Wan interrupted. “You killed Count Dooku and General Grievous and you rescued me.”
“But the Chancellor…,”
“That was out of your control,” Obi-Wan emphasized. “You did exactly what you were supposed to, Anakin,” he paused. “Do you realize what you’ve accomplished today?”
Anakin shrugged, refusing to be consoled.
“By killing the Sith Lord, Count Dooku and General Grievous, we can finally end the Clone War,” Obi-Wan continued. “That will save millions of lives and you’ve fulfilled your destiny by bringing balance to the Force. I’m very proud of you.”
“But Palpatine.”
“If Palpatine was half the man you think he was, he would have been glad to sacrifice his life to end the war.” Obi-Wan gazed at him sympathetically.
“I never thought of it like that.” A wistful smile began to form on Anakin’s lips. “The Chancellor was always saying he wished he could do more for the war effort and now he’s helped to end it…I wish there was a way he could know…,”
“Perhaps he does,” Obi-Wan mused. “Are you ready to meet the Council now?” he asked rising to his feet. “We’ve kept them waiting long enough.”
“I guess.” Anakin slowly stood.
“Relax, Anakin,” Obi-Wan advised, a twinkle in his eye. “The will of the Force was done today. There’s no reason for you to worry about facing the Council.” He smiled reassuringly as they made their way to the Council chambers.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
“Masters.” Anakin bowed deeply. Taking a deep breath, he straightened, squaring his shoulders fully prepared for whatever awaited him.
“Knight Skywalker,” Yoda began solemnly. “To the Force balance has been restored,” he paused, his pointy ears twitching. “Confer upon you the rank of Jedi Master we do.”
“Me?” Anakin gasped. “You’re making me a Master?”
“Question our judgment do you?” Yoda replied with a smirk.
“No,” Anakin looked from Obi-Wan to the Council, bewildered. “Sorry, Master. I..I’m overwhelmed.”
“A difficult trial you have had,” Yoda continued. “Remembered your training you did. Proud of you we all are.”
“Thank you,” Anakin breathed, shifting uncomfortably. There was more, he could feel it. He looked to Obi-Wan, searching for a clue but his former Master’s face remained frustratingly blank.
“We are also granting you a seat at the High Council of the Jedi,” Mace Windu announced pointing to an empty seat next to Obi-Wan.
Anakin’s mouth fell open in shock.
“You have earned our trust and respect,” Mace continued, a gleam in his eye.
“Thank you, Masters.” Anakin bowed again. “I promise to uphold the highest principles of the Jedi Order.”
“Be seated,” Mace commanded with a wave of his hand. “We need to discuss how to proceed with ending this war.”
Anakin bit back a smile as he turned to take his seat. He could scarcely believe he was now a Master and member of the Council.
Glancing at Obi-Wan, he was nearly bowled over by the pride reflected in his former Master’s face.
‘I told you that you didn’t need to worry about facing the Council.’
Anakin grinned, shrugging half-heartedly.
‘I should listen to you more often.’
‘Yes, you should.’
Obi-Wan chuckled earning a stern glare from Mace.
‘Thank you, Master.’
Anakin held his gaze a moment longer before turning his attention to the session.

This is for

who requested Anakin and Obi-Wan in staring roles. No Padme – something sweet. This may not be exactly what you wished for, but I hope you enjoyed it anyway!

YES!!! This is exactly the way it should have happened!! Lol, Anakin is in the Council's good graces and Palpatine is dead =)
It does make the story very short without all the drama with Padme, but atleast Anakin made it onto the High Council. Nice Job!

See,
that
is how it should have happened. Will Ani ever connect the death of Palpatine with that of the sith lord? (Just in case you wanted another bunny!)

You may well ask why I'm crying, Master. Is it because of the mushiness in the bonding between former master/padawan? No, that was well written and not overly mushy. I'm crying because Palpatine's dead!
But now I'm laughing because the fool Jedi had no idea who the real Sith Lord was.
Very well done, Master!

Very nice!
The title you picked sums it up rather nicely!
