WOW

What an amazing ending.

I was sorry to see Luminara die but her sacrifice was in perfect tune to her character.

I'm a little concerned about Barriss leaving the door open for after Anakin is knighted. We all know he's not about to give up on her and they'll still face the same serious sanctions...

You simply must do a sequel!

I loved Barriss and Obi-Wan's brief talk at the end.

Great job on this - I've enjoyed every bit from beginning to end.

That was a perfect ending. Life isn't always wrapped up in neat little packages with every question answered and all problems solved. If only! grin

Go, Obi-Wan. Now.

I have to try.

Do or do not; there is no try. Get them to safety!

Obi-Wan's hands moved of their own accord from the firing controls to the piloting. The engines were already warmed up and waiting. He paused, reaching back to Luminara through the Force as his fingers hovered over the controls. The sound of weapons striking the hull reverberated dully through the ship as the Geonosians struggled to get inside.

Goodbye, Ara.

There was a brief moment of warmth, an answering burst through the Force as his hands worked independent of his mind, unable to see what he was doing for the tears that blurred his vision, and the Nabooian cruiser leapt off the landing pad. As it shot from the hangar bay, Luminara's presence glowed with approval - and then winked out completely.

That got to me. cry

If you DO start a sequel, please put me on your PM list! applause

Wonderful job with this J_M! applause It was a very enjoyable read and wonderfully written!

The ending was perfect. Anakin's willing to wait with the knowledge that he and Bariss can be close without going into all that entails until after his Knighting. happy

I wonder how their relationship will change the course of things as far as Anakin's future. I also liked that Obi-Wan looked the other way and didn't address the issue; I just hope Anakin lives up to his mentor's trust. A discussion between Anakin and Obi-Wan about the elder's relationship with Luminara would be a good read. (hint, hint). happy

And if you do write a sequel, please add me to the PM list.

Thank you!

A great story, Jade_Max! applause applause I'm sorry it had to end; but I want to be on the PM list if there's a sequel. happy

This had to happen:

"Whatever happens Barriss, I just want you to-"

"Don't!" Her reply was sharp, cutting him off. "This is still not the time or the place. We're going to get through this, Anakin, and then - whenever that is - we will have that discussion."

"And if one of us falls in the corridor ahead?" He looked beyond to the cavern that awaited them. "I won't let them kill you, Barriss."

"I won't let them kill you either." She stepped close without thinking, needing to touch him again - needing that contact. His hand met hers half way, squeezing tightly. "We're not going to die, Anakin. Whatever's ahead can't best us if we do as planned and work together."

No! shock Have the two of you not seen the holodramas where people die after they say that kind of stuff? doh! And will you two please take your hands off each other? shame_on_you

Anakin regarded her intently before nodding once and lifting her hand to his lips. They were warm on the backs of her fingers and moved just slightly, as if saying something important. Then, just when she was going to ask him to speak up, he stopped. His boyish smile appeared and she could practically see what it was he'd been saying in his eyes. Her heart jumped in her chest and picked up its pace as she fought against the knowledge of what he was trying to convey.

She tore her gaze away, turning away as she slipped her hand from his. Taking a deep breath and using the Force to control her breathing, she forced her heart back into its normal rhythm. She couldn't afford the distraction now, especially not now, which is why she'd told him they needed to wait. But could they? Anakin had obviously needed to let her know even in some limited fashion, was she condemning him to distraction if they didn't speak of this immediately?

Hmmmmm! angry At least Barriss has some sense:

She was on her own - the Force couldn't help her in this. Yes, it was pushing them together; yes, it was drawing them closer; yes, it was playing a role in the direction their lives were taking. But it wasn't affecting her feelings. It wasn't affecting her heart. And it wasn't something she could deal with now in the midst of adversity when complete focus might mean the difference between life and death.

Barriss made her choice.

Turning back to Anakin she inhaled deeply once more and thrust everything she had just seen in him to the back of her mind. It was pushed into a box and the lid snapped closed - for the moment. She shielded every emotion, every thought regarding Anakin in the same manner - except their bond. She left the tie that bound them alone, somehow knowing that it would play a part in the upcoming conflict. In those moments she sent a plea to her Master to hurry.

Thank you! raised_brow Back to the fighting and killing. They had (of course) to run into Count Dooku:

Emerging into the hangar bay, they pulled up short when they were greeted by an elderly gentleman of aristocratic bearing, his white beard neatly trimmed, a cloak of midnight and crimson framing his black-clad body. He seemed surprised to see them - and only them - come running around the corner.

"Apprentice Jedi?" He laughed, the sound echoing through the cavernous space. "Surely this is a joke."

No, Count. What was in Episode II was the real joke! laugh Then the introductions, and Dooku's taunting of Anakin:

"Manners are tantamount to breeding, Skywalker... yours betray lower class upbringing."

Anakin let out a yell, his lightsaber igniting in the same moment.

"Anakin, no!"

Anakin didn't heed Barriss as he leapt towards Dooku. Barriss did the only thing she could - she called on the Force, her own blade snapping to life, and lunged in front of him.

Sith lightning sprang from Count Dooku's fingers, striking Barriss' lightsaber near the hilt and ricocheting up her arm.

"Barriss!"

She screamed as Anakin plowed into her back, taking them both to the ground even as his lightsaber blade winked out and she was suddenly wrapped in his arms. He lowered to the ground, one eye on the now complacent Count.

"Barriss."

"D-don't let him goad you." She shuddered as the nerves in her body continued to misfire, her lightsaber hilt dropping from nerveless fingers.

A bit late for that, I think. raised_brow I had to laugh a lot at this bit:

"Although your choice is not very commendable, I cannot say I blame you for forming an attachment to one such as her," his tone darkened at the end of the sentence, as though what he said was almost despicable in his own ears. "She is very beautiful, from a certain point of view."

laugh What would he think of Padme, I wonder? raised_brow After looking at pictures of Barriss, I have to say that he's a Sith of taste and discernment.

A good description of the Dooku/Anakin fight:

Dooku's saber came up as Anakin leapt in with an over handed chop, too close for the Count to throw lightning bolts and too quickly for anything but reaction. The battle was joined, Anakin keeping his back to Barriss and focusing on moving the Count away from her. He wasn't going to let this villain get his hands on Barriss - not even if it killed him.

Anakin parried a difficult series of jabs and slashes, spinning in place but never giving Dooku the chance to move by him. His determination fueled his fighting style, keeping him on the defensive even when Dooku gave him an opening. He didn't attack after that first over handed blow, simply held his ground and allowed Dooku to attack him.

Nice to see Barriss helping him here. Could you have done that, Padme? raised_brow

Somewhere in the back of his mind, Barriss joined him. Through their bond, she calmed his anger and soothed his unease, giving him the chance to fight with a clear head. Anakin's movements became more fluid as his mind cleared. Barriss eased his fears, feeding him information on her recovery from her injuries even as she helped him to focus.

Dooku is no fool and sees what's happening:

Barriss stumbled as her muscles went into a spasm, sending her to the ground and she stretched her hands out to catch herself. Dooku took the opening as Anakin's attention was divided and lifted one hand.

"Barriss!"

She let out a gasp of protest as a Force grip scooped her from the floor and sent her flying towards the vaulted ceiling. Hanging rock protrusions arced down towards her, threatening serious injury should she strike one.

In rescuing her, Anakin has his arm cut off:

Barriss was up and out of his arms in a heartbeat, her horror palatable as his right arm dropped away from his body, severed just above the elbow. The humming red blade that had cut through muscle and bone like butter swept back and Barriss didn't think - she reacted.

She attacks him, then Luminara arrives! dancing A nasty but correct description of Anakin's lost arm here:

His arm lay somewhere behind them, his lightsaber likely still gripped in fingers that would never again work.

And Obi-Wan's there too! dancing He and Luminara then fight Dooku. It's very well described, though I miss Yoda's intervention in Episode II. Dooku managed to knock Obi-Wan back mentally with the revelation of the attachment between Anakin and Barriss:

Dooku's chuckle was almost lazy. "Your apprentice was not fighting fair, Master Kenobi. Or were you not aware of his connection to the alien?"

The contempt in Dooku's voice was plain, his disgust evident. Dooku had ever been of the opinion that Humans should be the only Jedi and not sully their ranks with aliens.

Obi-Wan faltered for a brief moment and Dooku's lightsaber dived in, taking advantage of his distraction.

Then lots of Geonosians arrive, and Luminara sacrifices herself to enable the other three to escape. cry

"What are you doing, my Master is still out there! We have to help her; let me go!"

Obi-Wan paused long enough to set Barriss down, but his hands clamped down hard on her shoulders and he forced her to face him. "She's made her choice; don't let her sacrifice be in vain."

|
|
He reached for the weapon controls, but even as he did, Luminara's voice echoed through his mind.

Go, Obi-Wan. Now.

I have to try.

Do or do not; there is no try. Get them to safety!

|
|
Goodbye, Ara.

There was a brief moment of warmth, an answering burst through the Force as his hands worked independent of his mind, unable to see what he was doing for the tears that blurred his vision, and the Nabooian cruiser leapt off the landing pad. As it shot from the hangar bay, Luminara's presence glowed with approval - and then winked out completely.

cry cry

I liked his consolation of Barriss despite his own sorrow:

Obi-Wan made to move away, but Barriss stopped him with a soft question.

"Does the pain ever fade, Master Kenobi?"

He stopped, as if reading several layers into her question - and indeed he might have - for when he turned his eyes were guarded. "Jedi learn to release their pain into the Force, Barriss. They learn to accept death as a part of life. They - we have learned that all things must come to an end in their own time."

"Does that help?"

Rising to his feet, his gaze strayed to where Anakin lay, still unconscious, on the medical cot across the room. "What helps are the good friends you surround yourself with and the knowledge that, in some way, you live up to their memory."

Good for you, Obi-Wan! applause

Then the last bit. Nice to see what differences are already being made in the time line:

Luminara Unduli's sacrifice on Geonosis was felt throughout the Jedi Order; It was an assassination of one of their own; a call for war.

Anakin and Barriss' message, and the warning from Luminara, had saved the lived of countless Jedi who had been en-route to rescue them. It was a case of the need of the many out weighing the need of the one and for many in the order; the trade was more than fair.

Yet it was also a sacrifice many saw and envied as the ultimate form of sacrifice; to give one's life for friends. She'd been a well liked Master. At the time of her death, Master Yoda - having retrieved the clones from Kamino and entering orbit around Geonosis - launched an attack in an attempt to remove Count Dooku as a threat.

The attack failed, but exposed the Trade Federation and Separatist ties on Geonosis. It also revealed the Clone army of the Republic, led by Jedi, to be a devastating force.

So Obi-Wan ignored the 'strange bond' between Anakin and Barriss, at least for the moment. plain

Ani is dealing with his new artificial arm, and Barriss is now a Jedi Knight! applause
So what's going to happen between them? confused This story might have ended with the two flying off into the sunset, or getting married; but you, Jade_Max, tried another ending. thinking

"I'm afraid I do," her smile was sad. "We - I can't keep exploring whatever is between us, Anakin. If we're caught it means serious sanctions. We have a job to do now that we're at war, one that doesn't include discovering whatever it is that's built between us."

"I can't just turn it off, Barriss." Anakin looked pained, like she was putting a knife in his gut. "It's not that simple; this is bigger than either you or I."

"I know - which is why we can't pursue it right now."

|
|
"Don't push me away, Barriss. Don't shut me out. What's between us is bigger than us; you know it."

"That's why it’s dangerous!" She pulled out of his grip with a glare. "Don't you see? If we were to pursue this, it could take us all sorts of dangerous places. You're a Padawan; I'm a Knight. Both of us would be expelled and exiled. Is that what you want?"

"No... no. But I don't want to lose you either."

Barriss inhaled deeply. "Are you expecting to die sometime soon, Anakin?"

"Hadn't planned on it."

"Neither do I. While we're both alive, whatever's grown between us will stay. Your Master and mine are proof of that."

"Obi-Wan?"

Barriss nodded.

"No way."

Yes way! laugh

"It's true. My Master told me so herself."

"But attachments are forbidden."

"To Padawans who do not understand the tenets of the code or how to avoid the pitfalls." She poked him in the chest. "Like you."

"So what are you proposing exactly?"

"Until you're Knighted there can't be anything more between us than there already is."

"Until I'm Knighted." He exhaled on a sigh. "And until then?"

"We keep in touch. We communicate. And I learn what Knights do when they don't yet have a Padawan."

"Is this what you want?"

"It's the way it has to be, Anakin."

"And the insistence of the Force? I crave your kiss, Barriss - your hands on my back or caressing my face. Even now I can feel it pushing me to act rashly."

"Control, Padawan Skywalker." She smiled faintly. "If nothing else, it will be good practice."

"Now you sound like my Master - and yours."

"I'll eventually be asked to pick a Padawan; you're good for practice until then."

"Joy. That's the second question you've been disinclined to answer."

"Until your Knighted-." she was starting to sound like a broken audio recording.

His eyes gleamed with intent. "And after I'm Knighted?"

A smile curved her lips before she could stop it. "If the bond between us is as strong and volatile as it is now, we'll discuss it."

"I look forward to that discussion, Barriss."

Unable to help herself she grasped his hand and squeezed. "So do I, Anakin."

Wow! shock So Barriss is suggesting they wait till he's a Knight? thinking I've a feeling that this will be a great incentive for Anakin to attain that rank! laugh And afterwards, if they still feel the same way about each other? love rose

Very well done, Jade_Max! applause applause dancing You certainly decided to make this a 'long term relationship', both in terms of imaginary time and in terms of the length of your stories. grin raised_brow I'm really looking forward to any sequel!

Wow! I cant believe that you finished this off. I just found the thread again. I cant believe I missed these posts. If you do a sequel please PM me. I wonder if a joint mission during the clone wars would pour gas on their flame. I also wonder if her tempering lessons will result in him taking trials earlier.

What about the Sidious reference? Will they discover Palpy early?

This was great. I Loved this part.

Hearing what he wasn't saying, she nodded even though he was looking away. She understood. The pain never left but in time you became numb to it. You learned to live with it, to draw strength from its source. In time it eased into acceptance and in that acceptance a Jedi could find peace.

In time, she too would find peace.

She will find peace in time but not at the moment.

And then poor Anakin, wanting to be with her and with her Knighted, not being able to. His emotions were always so strong. It's a wonder that they didn't kick him out of the Jedi long ago. I loved that she was able to make him see the necessity of putting things off.

Great job.

Wow, that was an amazing conclusion to the story! Excellent! I like how Bariss and Anakin handled their sitauation. Just letting their bond be for the moment and letting it go while they adjust to the rapid events unfolding is probably the best thing. Patience could be an excellent virtue at this point.

If you choose to do a sequel, I'd love to hear about it, so feel free to send me a PM when you write it. Wonderful work.

Great resolution of a good story! Thanks for the PM's, and for the sequel, please aadd me to the list again.

It seems Barriss is wiser than Padme; and despite being closer to his age, she seems to be able to influence him more readily than Padme could. I'm resolved that that is a good thing, as long as her influence remains positive. I'm anxious to see what Palpatine is going to do about this. Maybe we'll see more of Dooku? Interesting...

Thanks for reading everyone, you’ve been a fantastic audience! hugs and those of you who asked to be notified when I start the sequel, I’ll be sure to let you know when it’s started – however there are two Vignettes in the planning stages to fill the gaps between here and then so stay tuned!!

Valairy_Scot – Thanks grin Wow was about what I was going for wink

Darth_Drachonus – Thanks happy

Raptor517 – If you didn’t see it coming, then I did my job correctly! Thanks!

Jek_Windu – Sequel soon – it’s got to be planned first to wrap up the loose ends that weren’t in this one…

HandmaidenVeme – Thank you.

KELIA – Wow is exactly what I was going for – thanks! grin Luminara’s sacrifice was something that I debated doing or not doing, but it fit so nicely I couldn’t not do it.

I'm a little concerned about Barriss leaving the door open for after Anakin is knighted. We all know he's not about to give up on her and they'll still face the same serious sanctions...

*grin* Well that’s something, but with the precedent that Luminara and Obi-Wan set it’s possible Barriss believes a liaison between Knights would be sanctions - providing it’s kept a strictly professional/physical relationship.

Of course, that’s not the case, but then Barriss is terribly naive *grin*

You simply must do a sequel!

Working on it! It’s one of those bunnies that’s going to take some time and development – but it is coming. I even have help with it wink

VaderLVR64 – Indeed, this was probably more realistic and probable than any other ending I could have chosen and it works nicely.

bek – Thank you, I had to fight with my muse about the ending to get it just right and had a lot of help with it. The ending with Barriss and Anakin wouldn’t have worked any other way. She’s mature enough not to fool herself into thinking that something is possible, especially with how messed up everything’s become.

Nor would she believe them capable of fooling Obi-Wan – they weren’t able to fool her Master. Once Anakin’s knighted everything changes… or rather, a lot of things change.

A discussion between Anakin and Obi-Wan about the elder's relationship with Luminara would be a good read. (hint, hint).

And so.. the plot bunny is born *laughs* That’s one I’ll have to do… it would explain a lot grin

Kevin_Solo – Thank you happy

No! Have the two of you not seen the holodramas where people die after they say that kind of stuff? And will you two please take your hands off each other?

LOL! That was the point *laughs* you have some of the funniest reactions to my chapters wink

What would he think of Padme, I wonder? After looking at pictures of Barriss, I have to say that he's a Sith of taste and discernment.

*chuckle* Dooku would have approved of Padmé – she, after all, is human wink

Nice to see Barriss helping him here. Could you have done that, Padme?

Not in the way Barriss did *grin* seriously, I think Padmé could have been a distraction, but also a liability. That she wasn’t around for that particular fight is probably a good thing.

And Obi-Wan's there too! He and Luminara then fight Dooku. It's very well described, though I miss Yoda's intervention in Episode II. Dooku managed to knock Obi-Wan back mentally with the revelation of the attachment between Anakin and Barriss

Dooku’s never been one to pull his punches, especially when it means giving him the upper hand.

Then lots of Geonosians arrive, and Luminara sacrifices herself to enable the other three to escape.

Fitting, though, wasn’t it? I debated killing Obi-Wan, but Luminara’s death was far more fitting. And it gives him the opportunity to console Barriss – he’s one of the few who completely understands having their Master taken from them at the hands of a Sith.

Then the last bit. Nice to see what differences are already being made in the time line

Oh, more than you know devil

So Obi-Wan ignored the 'strange bond' between Anakin and Barriss, at least for the moment.

Not exactly the time to address it, right? Obi-Wan would have problems addressing it for the same reasons he’s going to get on Anakin’s case – attachment. Luminara’s death would be painful to discuss for both of them. Later, once time has had the chance to dull the emotional upheaval, they can bring it up without problem.

So what's going to happen between them? This story might have ended with the two flying off into the sunset, or getting married; but you, Jade_Max, tried another ending.

I debated one of the ones you suggested, I even tried writing one of them, but the Muse refused and wouldn’t be denied. So Luminara died and they were left at a stale mate *laughs*

Wow! So Barriss is suggesting they wait till he's a Knight? I've a feeling that this will be a great incentive for Anakin to attain that rank! And afterwards, if they still feel the same way about each other?

Completely up to the muse *grin* Seriously though, Barriss at this point in the story would feel that Anakin’s Knighting would show he’s matured and evolved, able to separate the emotional from the physical. We all know that’s not the case, but that’s what it would symbolize. So by reuniting after he’s knighted, she probably thinks he’ll have mastered control.

*snicker* if only!

You certainly decided to make this a 'long term relationship', both in terms of imaginary time and in terms of the length of your stories. I'm really looking forward to any sequel!

Thanks! It wasn’t intentionally manufactured to be a sequel, it’s just evolved into that. So we’ll see what happens with it and with the Vigs I’m thinking of doing.

Ocelotl_Nesto – Oiooo, a joint mission in the clone wars! What a great idea. Something after he’d knighted devil thanks for the bunny! And I’m sure the lessons Anakin’s learned in this story will translate into different experiences and reactions in the clone wars...

What about the Sidious reference? Will they discover Palpy early?

It’s possible Barriss would try and get the council to act, but in their arrogance they refuse to believe it’s possible. I haven’t yet decided what to do with that particular plot point.

Jedi_Healer – Thank you happy

dianethx – Thanks!

She will find peace in time but not at the moment.

Like every injury, time is needed to close the wound or at least gloss over it.

And then poor Anakin, wanting to be with her and with her Knighted, not being able to. His emotions were always so strong. It's a wonder that they didn't kick him out of the Jedi long ago. I loved that she was able to make him see the necessity of putting things off.

Barriss has quite an influence of Anakin. Not just because of their bond, but because she’s his friend as well as connected by the Force. Their trust is already well established.

LuminaraFan4Evr – Thank you! I should put a tissue warning at the beginning of the chapter, but I think it would give the surprise away.

PadawanMom5610 – Thank you. Once the basic beginnings are set up, and the vigs written, we’ll see how quickly the Muse wants to work.

AngelQueen – Thanks! Patience is one virtue I think Barriss has far more than Anakin and without her cooperation he can’t really pursue anything *grin* He didn’t have much choice once Barriss told him they couldn’t continue as they had been.

Alkibiades – Thank you happy I don’t know if Barriss is wise than Padmé, or if she simply has the tempering of the Jedi and the lessons of her Master to call on. Padmé was wise in her own way, just as Barriss is, but each has different life experiences to pull on. Barriss has seen and felt Anakin fall – and pulled him away from the edge.

By doing so, she’d be aware of the influence she holds – plus she’d be well aware of the dangers her own safety would pose to Anakin’s frame of mind. Giving them both time to deal with it would be the safest – and most Jedi – way to approach it. Now that she’s knighted, it’s imperative she behave in the most Jedi-like way possible – despite what her hormones are telling her wink

I'm anxious to see what Palpatine is going to do about this. Maybe we'll see more of Dooku?

You know, I haven’t a clue yet – which is why it’s still in the planning stages…

Thanks again everyone, you’ve been a wonderful audience for this fic! hugs hugs hugs
