RE: Pass Through the Darkness--An Obi/Ani adventure, 1 year pre-AOTC--New post 4/10
The last thing Obi-Wan expected was for the Zcehc to actually allow his Padawan into see him. After all, if they were convinced of his conspiracy to wrong their people, letting another Jedi into the same room as him was not the best idea.
Then again, Anakin had no talent for serious trickery. He had a face that was best described as guileless, though appearances were occasionally misleading, and he tended to put people at ease simply because he had a very frank manner. It was a disadvantage at times, but in other circumstances, it had served their purposes well.
Whether that had been the reason for the Zcehc magnanimity or if Anakin had imprudently used a Jedi mind trick on someone was unclear. As it was, he was the one to bring the midday meal on the second day of Obi-Wan's imprisonment. Obi-Wan suspected that it had taken a great deal of convincing to keep him away for so long.
He set the tray down and promptly crossed the room to hug his Master. It was the most affection he had shown in months and Obi-Wan strongly suspected that he had either missed him or realized how far he was from being able to stand on his own.
"Are they treating you well?" Obi-Wan asked as soon as Anakin pulled back.
"They haven't done anything to me," Anakin replied, "other than ask me the same questions a hundred times. You?"
"The same," he said wryly as they both sat. "What news of the election?"
Anakin grimaced and looked over his shoulder as if nervous about who was listening in. "They have postponed it for now, but no one's sure what they'll do if the whole mess isn't sorted out soon."
That was typical of politicians. They were in a hurry to get everything accomplished in their own timeframe and were utterly at a loss as to do when things did not go their way. Perhaps the frenzy would compel them to see sense.
"Define soon," he requested.
"A week," Anakin supplied. "I think they're still holding out for a confession."
"Let them hold," Obi-Wan snorted. "I think they'll be less than thrilled when my imprisonment fails to yield any results."
"Well..."
Anakin leaned in, eyes dark with intent. "If you think it's right, I can get you out of..."
"No," Obi-Wan interrupted sternly.
"I'm sure the Council would want the Jedi name to be good here," Anakin countered.
That was a gross but common misinterpretation of the Council's abhorrence of misconduct. Anakin had been on the receiving end of discipline more often than not, so it was naturally what he thought of first.
"The Council would want me to endure my confinement until I am proved innocent," Obi-Wan corrected.
"Which will be when?" Anakin challenged.
"As soon as you accomplish it," he said calmly.
Anakin slumped back, clearly taken aback by the blatant faith in him or simply by his Master's insistence that he go against every over-protective instinct. His eyes studied Obi-Wan for a long moment as if trying to get the joke. Obi-Wan kept his face composed, unflinching.
"How..."
"Start with Dajar."
If Anakin looked bewildered before, he looked flummoxed now. "Lord Feckless?"
"Lord Feckless is the most reliable source of security evidence," Obi-Wan reminded him calmly. "Do not let him bargain with you or ask us to choose sides. Simply play off the fact that he will be sitting on the throne more quickly if he aids in finding the emblems of office. It will appeal to him."
Anakin finally smirked, looking more like himself than since he had entered the cell. "I can do that," he said.
"I know," Obi-Wan assured him.
They sat in silence for a long moment, not needing to say more on that subject until more had been accomplished. Finally, Anakin straightened his shoulders and sat up.
"The Council has been notified," he said in a more mournful tone. "They're not happy, but 'have all confidence in Master Kenobi's innocence.'"
"If you speak to them again, tell them I appreciate their stating the obvious," Obi-Wan said dryly.
"They wouldn't say the same about me," Anakin argued.
"If our roles were reversed, I would have never let you get away with it," he countered. "As it is, regardless of their faith in you, you have mine."
"I'll not let you down, Master," Anakin promised.
It was the first time in many years that he had been tempted to ruffle the young man's hair, but he simply nodded instead.
"I'll be fine," he insisted. "Go see what you can acquire from Dajar."

A very enjoyable and welcome update. Those two were perfectly in character.
