Star Wars Dawn of a New Age Revised Expanded Edition
Introduction
The Fall of Palpatine

From outside the Chancellor’s private office, within the Senate building, sounds of a vicious exchange of lightsaber blades could be clearly heard. The shroud of the dark side was gone and the Senate building was now infested with it. Darth Sidious was the root of evil that had entrenched itself firmly in the foundations of the Republic and Master Windu was trying to stop him before he could seize absolute power. But Master Windu had tried to directly remove him from power and made the mistake of not taking Anakin seriously about how powerful the dark side flowed through Palpatine. He could sense that things had gone terribly wrong and if he didn’t act quickly to save Master Windu, all would be lost.

It made Anakin run even faster after hearing the crackle of a Sith lightning attack and the mocking laughter of Darth Sidious. Another exchange of lightsaber blades could be heard, followed by the sounds of glass loudly shattering. He could sense that an epic battle was being fought between two colossal wielders of the force; a conflict with implications that plagued his mind and filled him with uncertainty for where his loyalties reside. Much of what he was feeling was due to the fear of loss for his beloved wife Padme that threatened to drive him to the edge of darkness, willing to do whatever was necessary to save her. It was this internal conflict that compelled him to disobey Master Windu’s order to remain at the Jedi Temple, knowing that Palpatine’s fate was in his hands.

Anakin suddenly lost his footing and tripped over something that he had not seen. Due to how fast he was running; he was unable to keep his balance, and fell awkwardly to the floor. Anakin gasped in shock as he realized he had fallen among the corpses of Kit Fisto, Saesee Tiin, and Agen Kolar. He reacted by crying out in horror at the loss of so many prominent Jedi Masters, cringing after he looked upon the face of Agen Kolar, who had been stabbed cleanly through the forehead by a lightsaber blade. He will never forget the expression of shock and horror on the powerful telepath’s face. Along with the look of fear on the others, it made Anakin tremble and quickly step over the corpses, realizing he had very little time left to save Master Windu from sharing their fate.

Anakin quickly got back up and made his way into the main chamber of the Chancellor’s office to see Master Windu was still alive, fighting for his life against Darth Sidious on the edge of the shattered view panel. Anakin armed himself and proceeded with haste forward, preparing to assist Master Windu. He believed he would need his help to defeat the Sith Lord and was relieved he was in time to save him.

Master Windu was sweating considerably, but that was not an uncommon sight because Master Windu was known for his battlefield intensity and aggressive fighting style. It was clear the Korun was fighting for his life, enduring attack after attack, and looked drained; barely able to stand. Only his Vaapad focus and iron will was keeping him standing, doing whatever it took to keep him alive against Darth Sidious’ brutal assaults.

Anakin had always been curious about the Vaapad technique that Master Windu invented and Obi-Wan advised him not to learn it because of its dark nature that was very draining on the wielders Force abilities. Because of that, only the most committed Jedi dared to learn Vaapad and only Master Depa Billaba had ever been certified by Master Windu to master it. But Anakin recognized that despite the drawbacks, the Vaapad technique was the only thing keeping Master Windu alive and able to stand his ground from the vicious attacks from Darth Sidious. It was an impressive display that Anakin would never forget.

Darth Sidious, on the other-hand, looked to be merely toying with him and clearly was overconfident that he could destroy him at any time. There was a hint of frustration on the Sith Lord’s face that he was unable to land a killing blow. But Anakin could also feel what the Jedi called a Shatterpoint was approaching, and would soon tip the balance of this duel, and decisively end it. He now understood why Master Windu wanted him to stay back at the temple because he was now that Shatterpoint. Once he walked through those doors, the burden of destroying the Sith Lord now fell on his shoulders and not Master Windu’s.

His presence brought a scowl of irritation on Master Windu’s face because that was precisely what he wanted to avoid in Anakin’s fragile state of mind.

Darth Sidious reacted by smiling sinisterly after sensing his arrival because he now believed all the pieces were now in place for the destruction of the Jedi Order. He would force Anakin to choose a side that would determine if the Republic would be saved or destroyed. The fate of the Jedi Order was also in his hands and as the Chosen One he would be responsible for either its salvation or destruction.

The revelation that Palpatine was a Sith Lord was shocking to Anakin. He had known Palpatine since he became a Padawan to Master Kenobi after the Battle of Naboo and helped him adjust to his new life as a Jedi. Over time; Palpatine and Anakin developed a very close personal relationship with him that was just as intimate as the one he shared with Master Kenobi. Anakin considered Palpatine more then just a mentor, more then just a friend, but perhaps other then Kenobi, he was the closest thing he had to a father.

Yet the man who had transformed himself in the Sith Lord Darth Sidious was nothing like the man he once knew. The old man suddenly did not look like the frail and weak politician that the Republic and Separatists believed him to be. Darth Sidious held nothing back now by revealing to the full extent of who he truly was. He was more then a match for Master Windu; adding to Darth Sidious’s overconfidence due to knowing that his knowledge and power in the Force far exceeded his. By all accounts, this was a brutally lopsided mismatch.

After Palpatine revealed himself to being a Sith Lord, Anakin could also see within the old man that he was highly confident in his abilities to the point of arrogance. Much like Anakin, Darth Sidious believed he was invincible and was unleashing the full fury of his abilities upon Master Windu. It was a testament to how strong Master Windu was in the Force that he was still alive and was using his mastery of Vaapad focus to defend himself from the Sith Lord. Anakin knew that it had been a mistake for Master Windu not to take him with him. Only a Jedi of his caliber or Grandmaster Yoda should have come alone to deal with Darth Sidious. Due to Master Windu’s choice: Masters Kit Fisto, Agen Kolar, and Saesee Tiin had paid the ultimate price for Master Windu’s recklessness. Anakin felt relieved to be just in time to at least save Master Windu’s life.

Like a venomous cobra, Darth Sidious was simply biding his time and waiting for his opportunity to inflict a lethal strike upon Master Windu with his crimson lightsaber blade. The style of Darth Sidious reminded him a lot of Master Yoda’s as it employed the same illusive movements,
combined with relying on the living Force as his most powerful weapon. He took notice of Anakin entering the room and with his powerful Sith eyes stopped him in his tracks. Sidious used his powers of mental projection to bring out of Anakin all of his darkest fears, forcing Anakin to confront his dream of losing his wife in childbirth. He actually found himself trembling in the presence of the Sith Lord, a feeling of fear Anakin had never felt toward an enemy before. It took everything he could channel to keep himself from getting on his knees and kneeling to him.

The man Anakin knew as Palpatine was now gone and in his place stood the monster known only as Darth Sidious. His mentor’s face was replaced by that of a vengeful man, consumed by his hate of all things, and in his veins flowed the unlimited powers of the dark side. The look of disgust on his face when he saw Anakin come for him broke his heart. Everything Palpatine had ever told him now sounded more like lies then truth. Yet he still wanted to save the man who became Darth Sidious, despite the fact that there was nothing good in him left to save. His wife’s life also hung in the balance and if there was even a chance that Darth Sidious could actually save her, then he felt compelled to try and save him.

Anakin became a bystander, watching the duel between Darth Sidious and Master Windu continue on the edge of the shattered window. The Jedi Master actually looked relieved that Anakin had chosen to stay back, not wanting the death of any more Jedi on his conscience. Master Windu continued to hold his ground and endure the powerful attacks Darth Sidious was unleashing against him, waiting for his opponent to become frustrated or reckless. He appeared to be succeeding and Anakin noticed that Darth Sidious was recklessly overconfident by continuing to fight Master Windu on the edge of the window. His eyes widened after Darth Sidious carelessly dropped his guard and he looked again in the direction of Skywalker to intimidate him not to assist. Mace seized the opportunity and high kicked Darth Sidious’s lightsaber from his grasp.

Anakin could not believe it. Master Windu successfuly disarmed the Sith Lord, followed by pinning him with his lightsaber blade in the corner of the shattered window. He then mocked Darth Sidious by triumphantly standing over him and said, “You are under arrest, my Lord!”

Anakin moved further into the room until he was standing at arms reach of Master Windu, the concern on his face was clear as he approached with his lightsaber hilt in his hand, intent on saving his life. But he did not ignite it, believing that the duel was over and that his assistance was not required after-all. Master Windu glanced toward him and made a motioning gesture with his free hand to him that indicated he had the situation under control. The Sith Lord looked helpless before him, slowly raising his hands in defeat to show his desire to surrender. Anakin relaxed a little, focusing on Darth Sidious whose appearance had changed back to Palpatine, giving Anakin some hope that he could be saved.

The fallen Sith Lord looked up at him in fear and cried out, “You see Anakin, I told you it would come to this. The Jedi are trying to take over!”

Mace shook his head in disgust, but did not realize it was Anakin he was pleading to and not him. Mace yelled down to him, “The Sith will never again rule the galaxy. You have lost!”

Darth Sidious focus returned back to Master Windu. He responded by allowing himself to become consumed by his dark ambitions of obtaining unlimited power. He looked up at the purple lightsaber blade that was pointed down toward his face and began to realize that his dream was about to end. It was something he would not accept as he cried out, “No!”

He had one last chance left to prevail. Master Windu had opened his defenses up when he pointed his blade down toward him to pin him against the window railing. Darth Sidious held his hands up, manipulating them both to believe he was trying to surrender. Instead Darth Sidious smiled sinisterly at him, preparing to unleash a surprising attack of vicious lightning attack upon the Jedi Master. He then yelled out in anger, “You have lost!”

Mace was caught completely surprise from the attack. They both believed the Sith Lord was toppled and helpless, and were caught off guard after he unleashed a very powerful Sith Lightning attack at him. But Master Windu’s mastery of the Vaapad focus saved his life. The Vaapad Focus enhanced Master Windu’s reflexes with the living force, forcing him to move faster than humanly possible, bringing his lightsaber back up to a defensive position to block the attack. Anakin was nearly blinded from the attack and brought his free hand up to shield his eyes.

When his vision came back to him, he watched as Master Windu began to angle his lightsaber so the lightning attack deflected harmlessly away. He then surprised Anakin by turning the attack against Darth Sidious and was angling his blade to deflect the attack back onto the Sith Lord. But it took everything Master Windu had to endure the attack and one slip on his part would doom them both. Darth Sidious knew this and continued to unleash Sith Lightning at Mace Windu, hoping the powerful attack would overwhelm his defenses.

The exact opposite happened as the Vaapad focus of Master Windu allowed him to turn Darth Sidious’ own attack against him. Master Windu began to overwhelm Darth Sidious as he continued to reflect the lightning attack back onto him while using all of his strength to hold the defensive position. The Sith Lord’s flesh began to be scorched by the attack and Anakin began to realize that without his help, he was going to be destroyed.

“Don’t let him kill me!” He cried out frantically to Anakin, while Master Windu used all of his strength to continue to reflect the lightning back onto him. Darth Sidious’s flesh began to burn from the intensity of the lightning and screamed in agony from the pain. But he refused to give up, believing he simply needed to sustain the attack to overwhelm Master Windu. He endured the pain and pleaded with Anakin to save him, knowing his betrayal would be his salvation.

“Don’t listen to him Anakin,” Mace ordered, feeling that Anakin was conflicted by his duty as a Jedi and loyalty to Palpatine. Mace trusted him to do the right thing and not to interfere. He continued to cry out for Anakin not to listen to the lies and tricks Sidious was trying to use to gain his assistance. He used all of his strength to hold the defensive stance, knowing that if he could not hold it, Darth Sidious would prevail and destroy him. He remained focused, waiting for Darth Sidious to lose his strength, only needing to hold out for awhile longer.

Anakin marveled at the strength of Master Windu, now understanding why the Jedi regarded him as their strongest warrior. Master Windu not only held his ground during this brutal onslaught, but the Vaapad Focus gave him the strength necessary to repulse the intensely powerful attack for as long as necessary. He could sense the Sith Lord weakening from being horrifically disfigured by his own Lightning attack. It would not be long now before he would be completely helpless before the Jedi Masters.

He then turned away because he could not bear to watch his mentor and friend be disfigured by the lightning attack while crying out in agony for Anakin to save him. He desperately wanted to leave the room and allow Master Windu to finish him off, but he dare not move because he believed the Jedi Master needed him to be by his side, to stand ready to finish him off. Within Anakin; feelings of uncertainty continued to plague him, believing he needed Palpatine’s Sith abilities to save his wife. He also felt like a traitor, believing that Palpatine represented the Republic and that his loyalty was to him, not the Jedi. But he dared not interfere, knowing Master Windu was doing the right thing and that Darth Sidious must be destroyed.

Palpatine then cried out to Anakin, “I can’t hold out any longer.” He looked up at Anakin’s with the same loving eyes of the father figure he had come to know, combined with the look of desperation from a man that was about to die. He could not keep up his attack any longer, due to becoming physically exhausted and also from his body being disfigured horrifically by the attack. He stopped producing the Sith Lightning and fell back against the balcony unable to defend himself.

"Anakin help me!” Palpatine cried out again in desperation, this time he truly was completely helpless and at the mercy of Master Windu. The smell of burnt flesh filled the room from Darth Sidious’ mutilated body that made him look even more weak and frail then before. He had underestimated Mace Windu’s abilities as a Jedi and very shortly he would soon meet his end unless Anakin saved him.

"I am going to end this once and for all!" Mace yelled out in determination, and prepared himself to bring his lightsaber down to destroy the Sith Lord.

Anakin tries to stop him and save Palpatine's life by pleading, "You can’t. He must stand trial."

Darth Sidious began to realize that Anakin might still choose to save him from Master Windu and his determination to destroy him. He began to plead for his life while looking as helpless as possible, this time truly looking the part. Meanwhile, he channeled whatever strength he had left to prepare himself for one final Sith Lightning attack. His salvation would depend on Anakin’s betrayal by trying to stop Master Windu from destroying him, knowing that Anakin was determined to preserve his life. It was the Shatterpoint that Darth Sidious had waited for and realized that his betrayal would bring doom to the Jedi Order. It was also a noble cause that Darth Sidious was more then happy to exploit and continued cry out for mercy from Master Windu.

Master Windu replied to Anakin's plea with his own greater understanding and judgment, “He has control of the Senate and the Courts. He is too dangerous to be left alive!" He also understood clearly what Anakin’s Shatterpoint and knew that his destiny was to truly destroy the Sith and bring balance to the force. All he had to do was allow him to bring down his lightsaber to destroy Sidious and that prophecy would become reality. Anakin would truly become the Chosen One in his eyes and would earn his trust if he fulfilled his destiny here today.

“It must be done.” He reiterated, hoping his convictions would be enough to convince him to stand aside and allow him to finish this.

Anakin sighed in despair, believing his wife’s fate was sealed if he did not try and save the Sith Lord. Despair and the fear of loss filled him, but he overcame those fears and chose not to allow those feelings to overwhelm him. He stepped back and made his choice by placing his trust in the greater wisdom of Master Windu, and hoped that this act will finally earn the trust of the legendary Jedi Master.

"No, please don't!" Palpatine pleaded one last time, hoping it would sway Anakin enough to save him. His eyes widened in horror, realized that Anakin is not going to do anything to save him, and Master Windu was going to succeed in destroying him. In desperation, he tries to unleash more Sith Lightning at Master Windu. But it is too late. Anakin looks away in shame as Master Windu swings his lightsaber down and kills Palpatine, slashing cleanly through his chest.

The dark side of the Force exploded from his body, followed by lightning bolts slamming into Mace and Anakin, throwing them both back. Mace Windu was pushed over the windows edge, but managed to catch on the window railing at the last moment. He holds onto it for dear life as he realizes it is the only thing that stopped him from falling to an agonizing death below. Not even a Jedi of his caliber could survive a fall of such a great distance.

Anakin was pushed back toward the entry way with nearly sufficient force to knock him out. He forced himself to get back up and rested on one knee, feeling a sensation of relief flow through him, as if a great weight had just been lifted from his shoulders: setting him free. Was the dream he was having an illusion produced by Palpatine to manipulate him to turn to the dark side?

He did not have long to consider this, however, after he heard Master Windu cry out for help and begins to stumble towards the window edge.

Mace Windu held onto the piece of railing for dear life, while dealing with the dizzying effects caused from the lightning blast he absorbed after he destroyed Palpatine. He deactivated his lightsaber and fastened it back to his belt, then tried to reach up to grasp the railing. But he was too disorientated from the attack and exhausted from the battle to be able to reach up and grasp it.

“Anakin, help me!” He cried out, unsure how much longer he would be able to hold on.

It was a miracle he had the strength to catch and hold onto anything, but quickly he was feeling his grasp on the metal frame wane as he cried again for help from Anakin. He was flailing his other arm now while he tried to find anything he could use for traction to latch onto. But the wall was completely smooth, with not even a crack he could use to grasp onto or use for footing. It didn’t surprise him, since the Chancellor’s office was designed to make it virtually impossible for anyone to grasp onto. He pulled out his lightsaber and tried to cut into the wall to use his hilt to help him scale up the wall. But his eyes widened as the blade deactivated once it came into contact with the wall.

“Cartosis.” He cried out in dismay, realizing that Sidious was well prepared to defend himself from Jedi and most likely all the walls were composed of the substance. It was the only substance in the universe that a lightsaber could not cut through. Ironically a very lightweight substance that in its natural form crumbled to the touch, the ore when refined had been used for millennia by Bounty Hunters and mercenaries in their armor to defend against Jedi lightsabers. It was fortunate the metal was very rare and it must of cost Sidious a fortune to acquire enough to coat his entire office with it. He deactivated the blade and clipped it back onto his belt, trying to find another option, only to learn in dismay he had none other then to fall.

He looked up to see his hand further loosen the grasp on the metal piece of railing that was keeping him from falling to his death. He harnessed all the strength he could muster to hang on, praying that Anakin was alright and that any second now he would come to his rescue.

“If it was Obi-Wan hanging helplessly over a ledge, he would have rescued him by now.” He muttered sarcastically, then crying out irritably, “Anakin, where are you!”

Reality was now beginning to seep in and all he could do was look up and watch as his body weight was slowly breaking his grip on the railing, his fingers slid off it, one by one. He was completely drained, unable to use the Force to propel him up the wall like Obi-Wan had done on Naboo to defeat Darth Maul. He couldn't help but look down to see that if he fell, there was no chance he could survive. There was nothing but pavement down below to catch his fall and not even a Jedi of his abilities could withstand the impact of falling from such a long drop, estimating he was at least a hundred stories up. He looked up again to see his grasp all but gone and his eyes widened after he lost his grasp on the railing and began to fall.

Anakin was just in time. He reached the railing and caught Master Windu. “I’ve got you," he cried out, holding onto his master’s hand with all of his strength.

Mace Windu looked up at Anakin and for the first time in his life since he had been first introduced to the boy, he found himself openly trusting him with his life. “What took you?” He complained bitterly, realizing how close he had come to falling to an agonizing death.

“I was taking a nap, what do you think I was doing?” He replied defensively, lucky not to have been incapacitated by the last he absorbed from Sidious’ death.

For a long time, they considered each other as rivals more then colleagues. This experience changed all of that and Mace couldn’t hide the sly smile on his face from Anakin’s comment that before he would have taken as either insubordination or disrespect. Choosing to stand up to him and disobey a direct order showed Master Windu that Anakin was indeed a man of principle; misjudging him due to his recklessness and unpredictability. They were more alike then they cared to admit.

Anakin reached down and pleaded with his master, "Give me your other hand!"

With all the strength he had left, he reached up and grabbed his outstretched hand. Anakin used his legs to pin himself safely against the window railing, followed by pulling Master Windu up and over the edge. Anakin fell back as Master Windu rolled over the edge of the railing and landed on his back.

Anakin began to feel that all the anxieties that had plagued him since he began to have the disturbing dreams about his wife were beginning to fade away. Much of the anger and fear that had led him to disobey Master Windu was now gone. From the look in Master Windu’s eyes, he could feel that he had done the right thing by disobeying him.
With what strength he had left he said to Master Windu, "It’s over. It’s finally over."

Mace interpreted what Anakin was saying was about the war and that the true cause of it had finally been found and stopped. Mace then looked over to the corpses of the Jedi masters that Palpatine had killed, remembered how he called them traitors, and how close they had all come to obliteration.

"Yes.” Mace said solemnly, followed by saying, “Now we begin the process of healing the Republic’s wounds and restoring the ideals that it stood for."

Mace Windu got up and helped Anakin to his feet. "You have done what you were destined to do today Anakin, and for that you have finally earned my trust."

Anakin was then shocked by Master Windu who clasped his hands in gratitude and made him feel for the first time that he was truly apart of the Jedi brotherhood. He had not realized until this moment how much the approval of the Jedi Council meant to him, and now that he had it from one of its most powerful members, it made him glow inside with both pride and joy.

They then set to work by dealing with the aftermath of their actions. They both knew what consequences there would be if it was not handled
well. Palpatine was a very popular figure in the Republic and many would undoubtedly look upon his death as an Assassination by the Jedi and not liberation from the rule of an evil tyrant. Anakin immediately contacted the Temple about what had just transpired and ordered a team of Jedi led by Shaak Ti to come to the Senate Hall immediately.

He then discreetly called Padme to inform her of everything that just happened, that Palpatine was the Sith Lord they had been looking for, and that he was safe. He wanted to leave immediately to be with her, but Master Windu ordered him to remain with him while they set into motion all that would needed to be done to declare a state of emergency, and get the Senate convened for an Emergency session.

Master Windu began to wake up Senate leaders to inform them what had just transpired while Anakin began to wrap the bodies of the fallen Jedi in
their cloaks. Once order was restored, both Jedi remained in the Chancellors office to prepare for the task ahead of allowing the Senate to convene to elect a new Chancellor. Both Jedi Masters watched from the shattered window while the sun began to rise. Anakin stood at Master Windu’s side and watched the sunrise.

“A Dawn of a New Age is upon us.” Master Windu spoke softly to Anakin, letting him feel the gravity of this moment as things were indeed about to change.

All Anakin could think about as he watched the sunrise above the skyscrapers of Coruscant was hope that this new age would be a glorious time to live. He also yearned for peace, hoping that the death of Darth Sidious would bring an end to the civil war. He lastly hoped that his wife would not die in childbirth, praying that his vision did not come true, and that they would be allowed to live a long life together.

The fear of his marriage being exposed immediately occurred to him, but as Obi-Wan taught him, he downplayed that anxiety, and focused on the moment before him. Right now he was a Jedi Master, bringing peace to the galaxy, and finally he earned the respect of Master Windu. His place on the Council and in the Jedi Order was assured by fulfilling the prophecy. Master Windu seemed not to be focused on anything at all as his eyes were closed and allowing the sunlight to wash over him, bringing peace to the Jedi Master. Anakin shared the moment with him, closing his eyes, followed by allowing the sunlight to wash over him as well.

He felt what Master Windu felt, feeling the dark side of the force being cast back into the shadows, and all that was left in its wake was peace. Tens of thousands of minds that Darth Sidious controlled around him were all set free, feelings of joy and happiness began to erupt into cheers for freedom. Even Anakin felt a piece of himself become free, realizing that Darth Sidious had more control over him then he thought, and understood what would have happened to him if he had tried to stop Master Windu from destroying him. It truly was a Dawn of a New Age for the Republic and both Jedi were proud to be apart of it.

This is the revised version of the original, with over 100 pages of new content.

It is the final draft of the original, and much improved as well.

The Senate

Convened by Master Windu, this special meeting of the Senate revealed many of the dark secrets of Palpatine. Anakin stood beside Master Windu as he described how it was Palpatine who had been responsible for the creation of the Clone army and the war. He described how through the dark side, Darth Sidious had manipulated the senate to nearly give him absolute power and warned the Senate that no man should ever be given such unlimited power ever again. Anakin looked over to see the pod belonging to his lovely wife Padme along with her closest confidant Bail Organa of Alderaan, who were both clapping for joy as the tyranny of Palpatine was now over. He smiled at his wife in agony; knowing that by destroying Palpatine, he may have just doomed her to an untimely death.

He also felt sorrow for the death of his mentor and friend Palpatine. Though he was clearly manipulating him for his own gain, he still felt his loss like one would for a father. Other than Obi-Wan, no other individual had influenced him as much as Palpatine and he would miss being able to confide in him things he would not dare speak of to his Jedi colleagues. Though he was smiling, Anakin was being eaten up inside by feelings of grief and loss. Despite those feelings, he knew that he had done the right thing, fulfilling his destiny by destroying the Sith.

"You must now elect a new Supreme Chancellor." Mace Windu announced bringing Anakin's attention back to the matter at hand. "We will not interfere as you now begin to deliberate who is worthy to succeed Palpatine." As Mace sat down, Anakin ventured his opinion by whispering softly, "Master, should we not provide the senate with candidates to choose from instead of allowing this tainted senate to choose who their next leader will be?"

Mace consider his words before responding, "It is not for us to choose who rules the Republic Anakin and we must not be perceived as being involved with the selection of the new leader otherwise no one will respect their authority." Anakin understood his master’s response and accepted it as he listened while the names began to be called out by members of the Senate.

It was also important to reestablish a legitimate government as quickly as possible so that it would not be perceived that the Jedi were attempting to take over the Republic. Initially, the council had discussed watching over the Republic and overseeing the transition of power. But now that the deed was done and the realization that it was a Sith Lord who had been in complete control of the Republic, the Jedi had done enough to secure the transition back to democracy. By destroying him, they had removed the cancer from the Republic, in effect curing it, and the Senate is now no longer manipulated by his presence. It was a decision Master Windu made when he had privately met with the Reformists, consisting of their most influential Senators Bail Organa, Mon Mothma, and Zang Far who wanted an immediate election for a new Chancellor. They realized, just as Master Windu did, that if the Jedi were seen as the rulers of the Republic or had a puppet government installed that was clearly controlled by the Jedi, then the Republic would topple under the scrutiny of the Senate and its citizens. A legitimate government must be maintained in order to assure the stability of the Republic, while it endured this transition into a New Republic. It would start by the election of a new chancellor.

One name in particular was most distinguished and popular as many prominent Senators nominated Bail Organa to succeed Palpatine. In response; Senator Organa moved his platform out toward Master Windu while publicly announcing, "I accept the Senate’s nomination and will be honored to become the next Supreme Chancellor."

Mace nodded to Bail Organa as he recorded his name on his datapad. It was clear after Bail Organa’s name was mentioned that any other candidate that accepted nomination was not as acclaimed or popular. The only other notable mention worth speaking of was Senator Amidala who was a very popular figure in the Senate and well respected. Anakin was relieved when Padme declined the nomination and instead pledged her full support for Bail Organa. With Padme giving him his full support, Bail Organa now had the full support of the entire Reformist party that now suddenly found itself in the majority due to the discontent for Palpatine and their pledge to return the ideals of the Republic that had been lost during the Clone Wars. After that pledge of support, the show of support for Senator Organa was very high and unless something catastrophic happened before the vote was taken, then he would become the next chancellor.

Anakin was relieved his wife had reluctantly not accepted the nomination as her pregnancy was in its final trimester and the babies were due within the month. He also knew that Padme was planning to leave public life and not seek another term in the Senate as she was committed to entering public life to raise their children. It was a concession she was prepared to make for their family, but also knew that it was beginning to bother her a great deal about the secrecy they would have to live with for the rest of their lives. He could see it in her eyes as he looked upon her and smiled. Padme smiled back at him, but the knowledge that she could have possibly been Chancellor would be something she would be constantly reminding him of what she had sacrificed to make their marriage work. Sacrifices that Anakin had yet to make himself.

But Anakin was not in a position to make any sacrifices because the only one he could possibly make was to resign from the Jedi Order. He would only do that if he had no choice because he had fought to hard to get to the position he had now, only to have it all taken away for violating the Jedi Code. He would only resign from the Jedi Order if he had no choice but to do so, but had made the commitment to Padme that if the Jedi forced him to make a decision between remaining a Jedi or her; he would choose her. It was the ultimate sacrifice he could make and would do so without hesitation if it came to that; he only hoped it never would and that another solution would present itself to remain a Jedi and stay married. He had already begun to study secretly in the archives all cases of Jedi relationships and was dismayed to find that every Jedi who had been discovered to have a wife was dismissed from the Order, without exception. He was not close to giving up as there had to be a way and Anakin knew that only he was capable of finding it.

Anakin’s thoughts turned back to the upcoming election for Chancellor and could feel the Republic wanted someone who was Anti-Palpatine. Bail Organa had not been very popular with Chancellor Palpatine, due to constantly being against the amendments and propositions that slowly gave Chancellor Palpatine complete control of the Republic. He had been one of the few to have the courage to vote against giving the Chancellor the authority granted in the Emergency Powers to start the Clone Wars and most importantly was the only one to still be alive as the rest were all killed or died in a series of accidents. Mace stopped it when he had a total of ten names on the list and called for a recess of one hour to give all the members’ suitable time to reach a decision.

It has been a while since I read the first version of the story and I enjoyed reading it again.

I have to admit that for Padmé to have to make all the sacrifices and Anakin hardly any is a bit unfair, although, I can somewhat understand it.

Great job on the first two update and I’m looking forward to read more.

Am glad you both enjoyed:)

I also appreciated the feedback Star. Padme has sacraficed to this point a lot more then Anakin to make their relationship work. That status quo will change by the end of Dawn.

I remember this! I'm glad you split it up becuase now I'll finally be able to read it completely without starting to see lines from staring at the computer screen so long!

EDIT: I just wanted to point out you changed tenses in your first chapter. It was absolutely wonderful and detailed, but I couldn't help but notice the changes in tenses.
