ALL THE EMPEROR'S MEN

Entry Two:

Time brings all things to light...

It is the one universal truth of, well, the universe. A truth that was given to me by ironically, one of the most untruthful human beings I've ever met.

In the shadows, where lies, deceit, and secrets dwell; it is time that drags them out of their dark prison and into the embrace of justice and light. Where secrets whither and die in a matter of seconds, evil is extinguished, and the world becomes a better place. Time, is just that powerful. More powerful than any Baron, politician, or Emperor could ever hope to achieve.

Sounds nice doesn't it?

Yet this universal truth, It is the only truth I know, that in reality, hides another truth.

They never quite tell you, exactly, how much time goes by. In reality, a secret, a foul misdeed...a very foul misdeed, can go unnoticed for months, years, centuries...

And in the end, time can be a very fickle thing...

________________________________________________________________

I still remember the first time I met that man, Ylliw Krats. I had just flown in from Courascant as a reporter from the holo-net. I had found out that there was a large explosion that was responsible for thousands of deaths on the planet of Dantooine, aparantly a large steel factory (during this time, the people of Dantooine were shoveling up underground steel by the gallons. It was a grand, yet short-lived experience for them.) had undergone a cave-in when ironically, the dura-steel structure supporting it was to weak to hold the factory up.

I was in the city of Dantoona, Dantooine's main capital, and was sitting in a cafe that was close to the spaceport. I had just gotten off my shuttle and was incredibly thristy at the time....

________________________________________________________________

Adriev looked at Dantooine with a typical Courascanti look of awe and slight disgust, though he dared not show it. It wasn't that he hated Dantooine at all, in fact he rather liked the fact that as his Shuttle was landing, he was actually able to see hills, grass, and trees for miles on end. It was just the fact that after living on Courascant for so long, anything that did not have 50 mile high skyscrapers was a bit...

primitive.

Adriev was standing under his shuttle in the center of the landing platform, taking in the new sight. A much, different sight, than one he was used to seeing. The ground was different, the sky was different, even the people ( though still human ) were different. His mind wandered.

"Echuta!"

Adriev was taken out of his private moment, "What?"

"Echuta!" The shuttle pilot yelled from his cockpit, " You want me to pop your ears out? This engine can do it if you want to stand under it!"

Adriev ran from under the ship as it gunned it's engines and took to the sky, leaving Dantooine behind and back to it's home.

"Love you too," he muttered as he left the landing Platform and into downtown Dantoona. Luckily for him, he arrived here in the morning so he didn't have to worry much dealing with the low lifes of Dantooine, not that Dantooine had that many low-lifes anyway. Plus it gave him more time to check on that steel factory.

But not until I get a little something to drink to keep me going until then... He thought, already breaking a sweat. He didn't even remember to check the temperature for Dantoona before he took the shuttle, he arrived in pants and a standard reporters outfit, and it was probably more than 100 degress outside.

Dehydrating by the second, Adriev quickly saw what he was looking for, a Cantina called
The Tatooine Sunrise.

That's just what I need to think about right now... Adreiv thought as he made his way inside. Unlike Courascant, the atmosphere inside, was not only unaggresive, but downright cheerful.

Though there wasn't a mix variety of races as there were on Courascant, there was still a nice variety to go around. There were no spying stares across the room, no hidden daggers
(though Adriev would have never of known if a man had one or not), in fact it seemed that everyone in the Cantina knew each other.

Sounds like Dantooine alright.

"What will it be friend?" The Bartender asked from his counter, a husky old man with a genuine smile and a twinkle in his eye. Adriev considered a moment.

" Is there really a drink called The Tatooine Sunrise?"

The bartender look confused for a moment, " I'm sorry, 'fraid we don't. We do have A Tatooine sunrise though." The Bartender said with a small half-smile.

It was Adriev's turn to look confused as he paused a moment, then got the joke and chuckled, " All Consonants aside, I'll take Tatooine Sunrise."

"Coming right up," the Bartender said and made his way towards his cabinet.

Adriev sat on a stool in front of the counter and took a moment to study the folk inside the Cantina, mingling with each other as if they were best friends.

They probably are... What a nice place to live in.

A Rodian was having what seemed to Adriev, a funny conversation with a wookie. A spectacle like that would of never of happened between aliens like these. In any case, the Rodian would of tried to shoot the Wookie dead, which would result in the Rodians Death.

I like this better...

"Here you go son," The bartender thumped the rather large glass on the counter, Adreiv nearly jumped. The liquid inside was a pleasant amber color, in which two swirls of yellow could be seen apart from each other. Much like a real Tatooine sunrise. It was quite a sight actually.

" Is it any good," Adreiv asked absent-mindedly, observing the drink.

The Bartender let out a snort," Boy, if it wasn't any good, would I have the name of my drink as the title of my bar?"

"Oh, of course," Adreiv said, a little ashamed.

"It's alright, your new, you'll get the hang of things give a couple of days," the Bartender said outstretching his hand,"name's Alan, Alan Rickman."

Alan Rickman? Adreiv thought as he shook the mans rather colossal hand. It was firm, yet not bonecrushing. It has rather hard to describe. His name also perplexed Adriev, Alan was such an...old name. The name Alan dated back to millions of years ago, with a rather large group of other names that died out. Names like, James, Bill, Ted, Michael, Michael being the oldest of them all. You never heard someone with a name like that anymore.

"How did you know I was new?" Adreiv asked, curious.

"Everybody walks a certain way here on Dantooine, it's not quite a hitch in their leg, but it looks like it. It's becuase of all the farming people do here. You don't have that,' Alan said matter-o-factly.

Amazing.

"Oh, almost forgot, here you go, Tatooine Sunrise dosen't taste it's best without this," Alan handed him a straw and left to go in the back.

" A straw?" Adreiv said out loud? "Are you kidding me?" He shrugged and dipped it in his drink.

"Hold it, Alan, don't let this boy drink a Tatooine Sunrise without really drinking it," A voice echoed in the Cantina. It was a soft voice, yet husky, with an accent Adreiv couldn't put his finger on.

A man sat in the shadows, a puffer in one hand, as smoke curled from it's tip like a devils pitchfork. His face was hidden, yet the outline of his features could be seen. His hair was a mess, a bit disheveled, yet handsome at the same time. His pant legs were outstretched on the table and were the only things that could be seen of the man except the arm holding the puffer, and the dim red light emitting from it.

" Yliiw, he's not from here, you know that," Alan said, as if lightly scolding a child.

"And You Know That, its all the better reason to welcome him into our society, starting with this drink," came the voice again. Adreiv could imagine a slow all-knowing smile coming from the dark man, and would place a million-credit bet that it was exactly what the man was doing.

His legs suddenly fell to the floor with a soft thump. His puffer dropped to the floor , it's smoking tip extinghuised as he brought his boot upon it. He brought himself up, and out of the darkness, his clothes (An old shirt and necktie), and face ( eyes a little close together, just a bit. And wear-lines on his forehead. ) came into view. He was in that stage between old sage, and young man, where the last glimmer of youth makes it's final goodbyes and is replaced by broken bones, and grey hair ( A little could be seen at the temples ). A small mouth, not quite beady eyes, yet expressive, and a slightly beak-like nose.

" Name's Krats, my good man," He said, arm outstetched and a small yet real smile. The kind of smile that a grandparent gives to his grandson, kind and wise.

" Adriev," he said shaking the hand.

" Adriev, it is a custom of the people of Dantooine, to drink with two straws," with that he placed another straw in the glass. Adriev noticed that each straw seemed to puncture one of the two suns within the glass.

"Two?"

"It's just what we do my friend," Krats said giving him a look much like a parent would give to their kid when teaching them a lesson, paitient and kind.

Adriev took a sip. Flavor, richness, life, flowed through his throat into his heart and spread throughout his body. At first it was a cold spring from which he was drinking, which quickly turned into a bubbling cauldron. Yet before Adriev could cry out in pain, the liquid lava he was drinking cooled down into a warm yet refreshing stream.

Adriev immediatley began to cough his head down low.

" Boy can't handle his liquor," Alan said with a chuckle.

"Maybe liquor isn't what this boy needs, If you remember, I don't need liquor either," Krats said with a reflective smile. He patted Adriev on the back and gave it a good light hit. Immediatley, Adriev's lungs opened up and he was able to breathe again.

" You remind me of a young man I once knew, he couldn't keep a straight face when he drank either."

"W-who?" Adriev rasped, his voice still a bit scorched.

Krats shrugged, "me."

He made a gesture to the bartender, " Alan, give this man a tall drink of water, quick." Alan made his way to the back, Krats cupped his hands and yelled, "TWO straws!"

_______________________________________________________________

Since then, my opinion of Krats hasn't changed much. He's still decent, he's still a nice fellow, to me anyway. He sure aint humble anymore though, now that I think on it. I said a while back that Krats isn't Pompus, he isn't. Pompus is a powdered wig and your nose in the air. Krats isn't cocky either, or arrogant, he's ambitious. He sets his goals and goes for them, and does whatever it takes to get them done. Whatever it takes...

He keeps talking about all these big things he's going to do for the people of Dantooine. New roads, more steel, new buildings, yet enough fields for everybody to run and be young. I'm not sure if he's lying or not. There are times when I think he is, but when you hear him talk about these things during his campaign speeches, all other doubt, all past grudges against him dissapear. His voice speaks with passion, his heart is in it, his gestures are grand, his very persona spreads throughout the audience and engulfs you into his personal dreams and hopes. He gives the people hope, his flaws aside, he really is a man of the people. And as long as he has his mind on the common people, I'll be by his side.

Still.... I have my doubts.

I fear I will always have my doubts....

I really enjoyed the story section. Your descriptions of the characters made them seem very real and the dialogue was very natural. You creating a very nice atmosphere on Dantooine. Very nice. PM list?

Entry Three:

If there's anything in my life worth remembering, it is one simple statement.

What you don't know, can't hurt you.

Krats told the city of Dantoona during one of his campeign speeches that he was going to build a 1000 miles of concrete roads extending to all the small towns within 50 miles of Dantoona. That way everybody from the farms wouldn't have to hike through marshes, and
'angry rivers' (As Krats put it) to get to the big cities. Turns out he was telling the truth, and he was already gathering road crews in secret to get ready to build them. How he managed to do it without even holding any real power, I'll never know. But I don't want to.

______________________________________________________________

" So tell me, Adriev, you say your visiting the factory?" Krats and Adriev were outside The Tatooine Sunrise and walking down the city's largest street that extended from one end of Dantoona, to the other.

"Y-yeah," Adriev said sickly, still a little shaken from the drink.

Krats made a sound like a wince, "Sorry son, you just missed it. An explosion came across that place 'bout a week ago."

" I know, I'm a holo-net reporter, I was sent here to write a story on it," Adriev said, trying to sound a bit more official.

Krats' gaze seemed to harden a bit, but Adriev hardly noticed, " your a city slicker?" Krats asked. Adriev was still recovering and didn't notice Krats voice dropped an octave.

" Well, yes. Yes I am, Dantooine is mostly a rural planet. People are interested when a planet tries to 'modernize' itself and then goes wron-"

" Modernize? Son, most people aren't gonna like he way your talking down here. I'm a nice fellow so your lucky. But most people here would of already given you a good deck in the face," Krats said with a wink.

_________________________________________________________________

He always has a way of making me feel comfortable, like a parent would say "it's okay son. Just try again." Never raising his voice, never lashing out.

__________________________________________________________________

"Oh," Adriev shifted his eyes towards the ground a bit," sorry. I've got a lot to learn don't I?"

" No kidding."

__________________________________________________________________

Yet like a parent, he would never let you completley off the hook.

__________________________________________________________________

As the two of them were walking down Dantoona's Leora st. Adriev noticed what was located at the end of the street. It was city hall. Adriev noticed Dantooine had a very unusual way of representing it's leaders. Typically, a planet will have its leader reside in the capital of that planet. In this case, the leader of Dantooine did not want the publics eye's upon him so he resided somewhere else. The senator of Dantooine lived in Dantoona however. He actually lived in city hall, which was rather unusual for most people but it was Dantooine. Which was getting more abnormal by the second.

" Like what you see?" Krats asked as his eyes looked at City hall, it's central spire hiding the rising sun, as if challenging the fire ball to shine around it. Adriev noticed Krats' eyes were shimmering, as if about to shed a tear.

" I do," Krats murmurred, " you know I've always wanted to live there. I've imagined the scenario a hundred times in my head. I'd wake up in that room on the very top of the spire, I'd raise my head up high, change my clothes, and look upon my city with pride and joy. There'd be miles of green surrounding me, wind coming in through the window, sun shinning in my face. Not too bright mind you, just right. No matter which way my head would turn, as long as I was up in my tower, I would look through the windows. Nothing but green, and the endless horizon." Krats turned away from city hall, not becuase he was tired of the sight, but because the sun had risen above the building and was getting in Krats' eyes.

" It never gets old, you know that? Looking at that building, if it weren't for the damn sun I'd look at it forever. You know what I mean?" Krats asked, not particulary to Adriev, but to anyone who wanted to listen.

Adriev, who had no such pleasures in life to look at buildings, or too feel the morning sun so delicatley on his face, could only nod half-heartedly and smile.

"One day perhaps," Adriev said, trying to fill the gap of silence.

" Exactly, minus the perhaps," was all Krats said. He looked at the spire one more time.

" You said you wanted to look at the factory? I know were it is, I can take you there if you want."
__________________________________________________________

Now that I look at it, I realized I was being very naive to accept Krats' offer. Mom always said never accept a ride from strangers, no matter how old you are. Cause evil don't care how old you get, it will still do the same things to you. But what could I do? I had no car to get me there. It wasn't even by a road.

I could of said no right there, now that I think on it. Could of walked, gotten my story in, gotten out and that would of been the end of it...

But there was something about Krats that got my mind in a twist. The way he carried himself, his kind nature, the glimmer in his eyes as he talked about city hall. He was a simple man with a simple dream. A dream every man, women, and child would like to have come true. Krats wanted to be somebody. Not some clerk at the grocery store, not some 4th grade teacher in a high profile private school, not even the manager of a theater. He wanted to be someone people will remember, a man that would go in the history books. A somebody.

And it was that glimmer in his eyes, the husky feel of his voice, the ambition behind it that made me go with him. And everything along with it...

____________________________________________________________

"I'd like that Krats," Adriev said smiling.

"Please, call me Ylliw," Krats smiled extending his arm to me.

____________________________________________________________

And with that, I shook the devils hand...

Thanks for the pm.

You've gotten me quite interested in Adriev's story. I like how you mix in the author's thougths from future in with the narrative. It's a very effective device. You're doing a good job of developing the characters as well.

Entry Four:

I really got to be more expressive with this journal. I feel like I'm pouring too much negativity into it. A journal must be a river, it's pages showing a multitude of flow and rhythm. And I here I am playing a one note song. Well, to heck with the philosophy, at least... for now.

I saw one of my best friends the other day. Sebel Tang, an old whither of an Ithorian. He's really more of a father figure, but he's been by my side since my parents passed away. (Another story, another time.) He's an retired judge actually, living a rather comfortable life on the lake retreats of Naboo. I left Dantooine for a few days to visit him. Krats said I could use a good break, he's got everything under control.

It's important you get to know who Sebel really is, most people take him as a senile old fool. I'll admit, the last time I went to his house, I was about ready to say the same thing. But that's far from the truth. His voice rings of power and warmth, forcing you to hear every last waking word, every detail of it, for if you don't he will bring his hammer down on you, like he's done with countless other criminals before him.

A life of getting to know the deepest of crimes and criminals has not made a malicious monster out of him either. He's still the same kindhearted soul I knew when I was a boy, and always will be.

I miss him...

______________________________________________________________

" I have a proposition for you Adriev," Krats leaned his head back towards Adriev as he was driving the ground-car towards the explosion site. His face reminded him of a mischevious child who stole money from his mothers pocket.

" Yes?" Adriev said, head looking out the window, taking in the still-foreign sight of rolling hills and grass.

" Their will be plenty of hills you'll be seeing, now I want you to listen," Krats said, eyes now on the road, " god I hate driving. Anyway, you saw city hall right? Nice building right?"

"Oh yes, very nice."

" Your a reporter, you know how to get the people all riled up when they need to be, say the right words to get them to do things right?" Krats asked, and Adriev could see that he was looking straight into his eyes from the rearview mirror. They bored right into him.

" How so?"

Krats raised an eyebrow, and the twitch of a half-smile came into view, " don't try and play the fool with me son, I've dealt with people like you before."

"I'm sorry, then yes. I know how to get the people, 'riled up'," Adriev said, the edge of sarcasm faint, but detectable. Krats picked it up in an instant, and smiled fully.

" Oh, you might be the one boy, I think your the one," a pause settled in the air before Krats continued," It's been a while since I've tried politics. I tried running for Mayor of Drayson city, that's back where I grew up mind you, but that... that didn't turn out well," Krats' voice dropped an octave again, and his eyes seemed to grow darker, impossible yes, to Adriev anyway. But it happened.

"I'm trying it again, 'cept I'm going for senator. Senator of Dantooine, people tell me they see Ylliw Krats that way. They say I'm too good to settle for mayor of anything. Well, Adriev my friend, I'm inclined to believe them," Krats smiled grew a bit wider, his slightly beady eyes grew wide with excitement.

"And Adriev, I think you can help me do that. After I give you what you want of course," Krats added quickly, but not desperatley, Adriev might of known Krats had been planning a speech like this for a while had he not been focusing on what Krats was saying.

" Well Krats, how do you know what I want?" Adriev said, trying to size up Krats.

" You want a story to give back to them lickspittle, nose-wipers back in tech-town right?" Krats asked, his voice full of confidence and conviction, " your not gonna give em a story Adriev. Not anymore."

Now Krats had Adriev's full attention. He sat upright, head forward, clear of mind.

"Your gonna give em a damn good story my friend. Come outside, I got something to show you." Adriev hadn't even noticed the car stopping in front of what was once the factory. Krats put on his fedora, an ugly sight to Adriev, and beckoned him out.

It was a horrid sight, mangled durasteel girders were bent in every direction, what was left of the square building seemed to bend to the side due to the melting of the girders. The soil around it was not so much blackened earth, but thin glass due to the intense heat. It rested on top of a lone hill, overlooking all of Dantoona. Krats led Adriev around the bits of steel, around the fire-child of a factory, to the crest of the hill. Krats took out another puffer and tried to run his hair back, when it didn't he shrugged and lit his puffer. The smoke whirled away in the wind, Krats took notice and tucked the bill of his fedora closer to his head.

"What if I told you, that the explosion here, wasn't an accident?" Krats said softly, his voice took on an unnatural dryness.

" An accident? It was a cave in, the factory's structure couldn't support in and it collapsed, and the power core ig-,"

" I don't remember asking you to prove anything Adriev, what I want to know is, what if I told you the explosion here, wasn't an accident. Better yet, an act of sabotage?" Krats said, that slow half-smile creeping in, " Maybe a couple of old-time Dantooine citizens who couldn't stand change perhaps? Or how about a few old confederacy droids, I hear a few of them are still active these days eh?"

Adriev pursed his lips, in thought, catching on to Krats' game.

"I'd need a few more facts, maybe some names, a bit of Dantoona's past, to spice things up," Adriev suggested.

" I'll be happy to give you them, son," Krats whispered, " I just need a little something in return."

Adriev looked away from Krats, observing the city a moment, without looking into those eyes again he said, " you say you failed at politics a while back? Your awfully good at lying."

" Their were other circumstances. Another story, another time. As I said, I'll give you your story, if I get a little help myself."

Finally, Adriev turned to Krats, " Alright, what's the catch?"

" I got some friends of mine to help me campeign for senator, And I got a few speeches cooked up that will cause my polls to rise pretty fast, I just need a nice paperboy like you to get the people to go my way. Get em fired up," Krats husked, " Don't sugarcoat me, but make me the good guy. People love a hero," Krats said. More to himself than Adriev, Adriev noticed again that at that comment, Krats' eyes seemed to darken again. It made him feel a little uneasy, but he liked the idea of a 'damn good' story. It might get him a little more praise back home, among other things.

Adriev took a moment to decide, a moment being relatively short.

"Deal."

Krats grinned,"Your the one boy," he said. Both of them turned to look at the city, the afternoon sun shinning on them. Krats sighed a sigh of satisfaction.

"Your the one..."

And I here I am playing a one note song.

Nice imagery here.

" Their were other circumstances. Another story, another time. As I said, I'll give you your story, if I get a little help myself."

Seems like Adriev is making a deal with the devil here.

Can't wait for more.

Entry Five:

Writing a diary can be a slow time-staking thing if you don't have a lot of time on your hands. I don't think I'll be able to write in this thing a lot of days as much as some people can, every day. Hell, every minute with some people.

I came back from my visit with Sebel Tang. He's that nice judge I wrote about a couple weeks ago. I wish I was back there again, I'd love to just kick my heels back and relax by the lake once more, to hear that kind and thoughtful soul just tell me stories of his past. Like it used to be back when I was a kid.

But I guess things aren't meant to be sometimes....

Some...Times...

Times....

Time....

God damn Time.....

God Da-
