Title: The Defendant's pleading
Author: Darth Kripp
Timeframe: End of RotJ
Genre: AU, General
Characters: Luke Skywalker, Emperor Palpatine
Summary: The Emperor has thought of another strategy to turn Luke to the Dark Side without Vader's assistance, in a much different way.
Note: I own nothing. All the characters and locations are Copyright Lucasfilms Ltd.

Chapter I.

“Then my father is truly dead.”

This sentence rang in Luke Skywalker’s mind during his short travel to the Death Star. He could not avoid thinking about it: he had completely and utterly failed. He had given himself to the Sith hoping that he could redeem his father; in fact, he had marched straight towards his unavoidable doom, and these few words were its simplest expression, showing the whole depth of his failure. The cuffs around his wrists, the clone troopers that were guarding him, the poor conditions of his detention, all of this was nothing compared to his current spiritual state. Indeed, his father was dead; so would he be in a few hours, or perhaps a few days, consumed by some devilish Darth. The most troublesome fact was that he would probably enjoy and welcome this conversion. The Dark Side was seductive and attractive like the most charming ladies, like Leia had been towards him when he believed her to be a complete stranger to his family.

Those thoughts about his sister made his mind rebel against the despair. He had not failed. Maybe, just maybe, there was a trace of goodness in his father. After all, he had seemed deeply affected by his son’s words, by the way he pleaded with him. No father, as evil and twisted as he might be, could abandon his son to the Dark Side. Hope flickered again in the young Jedi’s mind. There would be a way to stop the Emperor and to redeem his father in the world’s eyes.
As soon as hope was reborn in his mind, the shuttle touched down in the Death Star main docking bay. The troopers pushed him forward towards Darth Vader who was waiting for him. They walked towards the turbo lift that would take them to the depths of Hell, even if it was supposed to go up. Inside the lift, Luke felt the increasing presence of the Dark Lord who was waiting for him at the summit of his glorious weapon. He intensified his mental shields so that the Emperor could not sense his thoughts and focused on the battle which he sensed would come. He did not know who he would fight yet, but he was sure that at least one person would be dead within a few hours. And he hoped that it would be Palpatine.

The turbo lift slowed down and stopped. The doors opened, and Luke and his father were surprised by the setting. For it was nothing less than that: a great theatre that Palpatine had set up for a purpose neither of them could guess. Instead of the large, cold and dark room which Vader had left a few hours ago, they entered in a huge, clear chamber, which had been decorated with taste. A table had been set for two people, with porcelain plates, crystal glasses and golden cutleries. The wine and water jugs were also made with crystal. It seemed to Vader that he was in the Supreme Chancellor’s office, not the lair of a Sith lord. To say the truth, he was amazed by this spectacle.
Luke was completely unsettled by what he saw. He hadn’t imagined that. He had figured a dark room which was designed to fuel the powers of the Emperor. This wonderful audience chamber was really impressive, as was the man seated in front of him on a large throne. Far from wearing his dark Sith robes with the hood raised over his head, he was dressed in a white tunic with black trousers and black jacket. No hood hid his disfigured face, showing the malevolent glow of his yellow eyes and the putrid teeth behind his thin lips. Nonetheless, his voice sounded soft and compassionate when he addressed Luke.

“Welcome, young Skywalker.” He said as he stood up. “I have been expecting you.”

He noticed the binders on the young man’s wrists.

“Lord Vader? Are you responsible for those?”

The Emperor’s tone was suddenly icy.

“Yes, my Master. It was…”

“I do not care what you think, Lord Vader. This is a grave insult to a guest of mine. I thought you to be a better servant than that. Take those off immediately, and do remember that he never needed them.”

“At once, my Master.”

Luke was slightly amused by this little play. The Emperor was trying to seduce him, that he knew, but the way he had just humiliated Vader before his eyes and those of the two guardsmen (whom he sensed wouldn’t last long) was really funny. He quickly reminded himself that this lack of compassion was a path to the Dark Side, and focused back on his mission. But not for long, for the Emperor apologized:

“I am really sorry, boy. Lord Vader can be a very good man, but he forgets his manners sometimes. I hope you are not angry with me for…”

“No, not at all.” Luke answered. “I must say I figured that I would be cuffed.”

“Has something been taken from you by one of my servants? Ah, yes of course: your lightsaber. Lord Vader!”

“At once, my Master.”

Luke’s cuffs fell on the floor and were quickly retrieved by the Dark Lord who handed back his lightsaber to Luke. When this was done, the Emperor turned towards his men.

“Guards, Lord Vader, leave us alone.”

There was no objection. Vader left, his head hanging low, his mind enraged with his humiliation and worried by what he feared would happen between the old corpse he still called his master and his son.

Once they were gone, The Emperor gestured for Luke to sit down on a nearby armchair he had set.
“Young Skywalker, I asked you to come here…”

“Rather forced me…”

“Did I have a choice? You would not have come on my invitation, would you?”

“No, indeed I would not have.”

“Then, you understand my options were limited. So, I was saying I asked you to come here for one reason.”

The Emperor paused and considered what he would be saying.

“You have been trained as a Jedi, haven’t you?”

“Yes, I have.”

“Then you must have heard of the Dark Side of the Force, of what it can make you do. You must have heard of what has happened during those last forty years: the fall of the Republic, the destruction of the Jedi, the rise of the Empire and the monstrosities the Sith have committed in the name of security and freedom. I certainly forget some of those tales.”

“Indeed, I have.”

“I have no doubt that those speeches were repeated to you by the Alliance.”

“They were.”

“Then, young Luke Skywalker, I would like you to hear the other party at this trial. You will be a sort of judge, in fact the one judge who shall decide on who is right in this conflict between the Jedi and the Sith, for I am sure you have long since understood that the Republic and the Empire are mere facades. This is a matter between two rival orders, and I want to bring it to an end. Henceforth, I thought that the best man who could judge us would be you, the son of Padmé Amidala Skywalker, who bares all her virtues in your blood, who is a fair and just man. Now, in the name of all the Sith lords that have come before me, I ask you to judge us all, since we have been brought to court by the Jedi prosecutors. Judge us according to the law and the Force.”

Palpatine had stood up during his speech, his full skill at use. He had to convince this boy to listen to him and to his pleading. This was necessary. However, Luke objected to this demand.

“But if I am really fair, I cannot accept. You have underlined it yourself: I have been trained as a Jedi. I cannot be the judge and the party.”

“Indeed, boy. But you are not a Jedi yet. That is why you are the best person I could ask this to: you have heard the claimant’s pleading; now hear the defendant’s pleading.”

This was not easy for the young man. He knew that the Sith were deceitful, but how could he refuse this? Palpatine was right: he was no Jedi yet. Even if he were one, he could not refuse the request of a man who asks to be heard by a judge, whoever he is. After one or two minutes, he finally rose:

“I accept.” He simply stated.

So, this is the beginning of what I believe will be a quite short story. Reviews are most welcome, as usual.

Sounds like a drummhead trial if u ask me

Who will argue for the Jedi if not Luke and what does Palpatine hope to accomplish by this mock trial?

Good start and look forward to reading more updates:)

Hi everyone,

First of all, thank you all for your wonderful comments to which I apologize I don't have time to reply in detail. Rest assured that I really deeply liked them.

You will get an update soon, I promise. Unfortunately, you must know that the beginning of a speech is the most difficult part to write. I'll try to update during the weekend.

And now, back to the story and that twisted snake of a Sith lord!
**********

Chapter II.

Lord Justice Skywalker was seating on the Imperial throne aboard the Death Star’s throne room. The old Emperor stood before him, his arms on his sides, as an attorney should before his judge.

“Lord Skywalker, I come before you, unlawfully accused by the entire society and the Jedi order. I’m here because of their jealousy, their hatred and their misunderstanding of the law, be it the law of men or the law of the Force. Henceforth, as you kindly authorized me, I shall defend myself against those tremendous accusations of high treason and genocide that I am currently charged with by my prosecutors. In return, I shall raise my own claims against those who believe their bloody hands can be hidden behind a thin shroud of false innocence.”

While he was speaking, the Emperor had become increasingly agitated, his voice getting louder with each word. He played the outraged defendant, the one that does not understand why he is here. ‘A remarkable actor’, Luke thought. Nevertheless, he was impressed by this frail old man’s speech. He had to concede that the Emperor had some good points: indeed, the Sith master, as powerful as he was, hadn’t even tried to break through Luke’s mental shields and read his thoughts, which would have been very difficult to resist against. The Emperor intended to play a fair game and let the young man decide by himself.

“First of all, Lord Skywalker, I shall start with the facts, not only those you already know, but also those that haven’t been brought to your attention. Indeed, this conflict hasn’t started with the fall of the Republic. We have to get back through time, well before our birth, even before the birth of the Galactic Republic. In fact, we have to get back to the discovery of the Force itself and the great schism that occurred shortly afterwards.”

The Emperor cleared his throat.

“This is no mere legend. I shall bring before the Court the evidence of what I will say today, if you will grant me the permission of course.

“Anyway, in the beginning, millennia’s ago, the Force was discovered by a few people. All were awed by the formidable power that lay in their hands. I’m sure you understand that very well, since you discovered this field a few years ago if I am correct. As you well know, the Force can be used for many things, from healing to killing. In some people’s mind, it appeared as a formidable tool to govern planets, and even systems. In other’s, it had to be held back, thus letting their polluted, mortal minds govern those entities. Those of the first category were expulsed from the order and damned by the Jedi as users of what they called “the Dark Side of the Force.” Those who changed their minds afterwards suffered a similar fate. Henceforth, you have no doubted understood what happened: the Jedi took full control of the young Galactic Republic, although they claim they were just mandated to protect peace and justice in the Galaxy.

“It was not long before a tremendous conflict broke out between the order and the “heretics”, leading to a full scale war. The Jedi claimed that the Sith, as the other order called themselves, posed a grave threat to the Republic. Thus, the Galaxy was devastated by countless years of fighting. Both sides suffered very high damages. The Sith tried to voice their own point of view, showing how well their peaceful government had worked in the part they were located, but those pleas fell on deaf ears. The Jedi’s purpose was to destroy the Sith without second thoughts or even mercy.”
Luke wanted to react, to raise his own objections. However, he was bound by his judge office. He could not say anything, since he was no party to that trial. However, he hoped that the Force would light his path and show him what to think about all of this.

The Emperor went on.

“The war had been raging for several years now. Neither side gained the upper hand. I have to admit that my predecessors became desperate to at least get heard by the Republic, but divisions were creeping in the Sith order due to this war. The Jedi noticed this immediately and withdrew from the fight like cowards. It was too late for the Sith however, since an inner conflict had already broken out. The Jedi claim nowadays that this is due to the Dark Side’s influence on our minds, while in truth, it was because our different points of view. Some of us, indeed, fell prey to madness due to this war and had to be eliminated. While we were fighting those madmen, the Jedi attacked us and crumbled our order, thus ending the war and getting their iron hands on the Galaxy. Only one person, Darth Bane, the father of us all, survived this purge.”

The Emperor had finished this tale on a perfectly tragic tone. The victims were the Sith, and the butchers were the Jedi. Although Luke considered this to be purely theatrical, he couldn’t help but feel sorry for these poor Force-users. Somehow, the young judge believed they didn’t deserve this. At least, they should have been arrested and standing trial.
**********

In the netherworld of the Force, three powerful Jedi masters were discussing this incredible turn of events. None of them had thought this would happen. Once again, the Emperor had managed to twist the future to his full advantage.

“What a snake!” Obi-Wan Kenobi growled. “I can’t believe this.” This was no sadness, but pure, unbridled frustration.

“Clever is he.” Yoda conceded. “Always manipulated us, he has. Once again, blind we all were.”

“We shall turn this to our full advantage.” The third one, Qui-Gon Jinn, announced. “In doing so, the Emperor has opened the gate for us to get in. We have a rather unexpected ally.”

“Who might that be?” The others asked.

“You know the answer, my padawans. You’re still afraid to say it.”

“You cannot possibly think…” Obi-Wan burst out.

“Yes, I can. I’m even doing it right now. He’s our only chance.”

“Not him!” Yoda stated. “Too dangerous and unpredictable is he. Told you I did countless times!”

“That’s precisely why he’s our best ally. He’s our only hope, as much as you dislike it.”

“No! No! No!” Raged the two others. “You won’t do that. We won’t let you.”

“Would you rather loose Luke to the Dark Side like you did his father? Is it what you want?! You must have understood by now that if the Emperor hasn’t directly confronted him, it is because he has understood that he wouldn’t be able to turn him. Thus, he’s devised a new strategy, similar to the one he set up for Anakin. If we don’t act now, we are lost.”

“And how do you plan to act?” Obi-Wan asked.

“You won’t like it, my apprentice, but it is necessary. We have to tell him the truth, thus leading to him using the Dark Side again.”
**********

So, any idea about this??? Reviews are still warmly welcome. grin

A small point regarding:

He had to concede that the Emperor had some good points: indeed, the Sith master, as powerful as he was, hadn’t even tried to break through Luke’s mental shields and read his thoughts, which would have been very difficult to resist against.

At the time ROTJ and its special ed were released, nobody knew much about the Sith and nobody really knew Palpy was one. We knew he had the Force, obviously, but there was no reason to think Luke knew anything about the old Jedi Order or anything at all about the Sith Order. We sure didn't. Now we know these things in retrospect, but I don't know if that changed what Luke knew. His time with Ben Kenobi was so short.

‘A remarkable actor’, Luke thought.

*pictures Ian delivering the lines* Tee-hee!

“Who might that be?” The others asked.

“You know the answer, my padawans. You’re still afraid to say it.”

*screams and jumps up and down*

Vadey! Vadey! Vadey! What a tremendous turn this is taking!

*awaits more with pleasure*

Wow, great speech by Palpatine.

Love the reactions by the Jedi Masters, and I have a feeling what Qui-Gon's planning, and yeah, the other two will not like it. :P

This story is so different from the ones I read. grin

I wonder how Luke can be so gullible, he didn't appear that way
in the movie's shame_on_you
I love the bit with the three netherworld Jedi's arguing over who will help luke. laugh

We all know Vader helps Luke in the end. dancing

Luke wanted to react, to raise his own objections. However, he was bound by his judge office. He could not say anything, since he was no party to that trial. However, he hoped that the Force would light his path and show him what to think about all of this.

Why does Luke conform to Sidious's wishes. He is not bound to any office he is not a Judge.
Wake up Luke dont fall for his lies, that's right listen to the force.

I will read and see where this goes thinking

Hi folks,

First of all, thank you so much for your wonderful comments. I DO really appreciate them.

Second, I will update quite soon. You will have your answers.

Third, here are the long overdue answers.

LLL: I see your point. Indeed, we had no idea that the Emperor was a Sith master. As for Luke’s knowledge, he’s learnt a few things with Obi-Wan and Yoda. I know, this is quite speculative, but one can assume that he knows a bit more than what is told.
Thanks for your comments.

ShadowKnight1: Indeed, Palpatine has always been a good speaker. Thanks for reading.

Gkilkenny: Why, of course Luke is a judge. He’s accepted this task. Now, he has to suffer the consequences and rule this trial according to what he thinks… which, as you will see, will be difficult to do.
Thanks for your comments.

I hope to be able to update before the end of the week. Blasted exams!

Hi there again,

I found some time to write this post. Enjoy!

Chapter III.

Darth Vader was fuming. He hadn’t felt so angry since he had discovered his son’s existence and the lie of his master. Now, he had been humiliated before his son’s eyes, but also, he couldn’t protect him from the terrifying assaults the Emperor would launch against him. Once again, he had failed miserably to protect those he loved, and he found himself in his quarters.

“Not yet, my friend. Not yet.” A calm and somehow familiar voice said behind his back. The Dark Lord was surprised, for he sensed nobody behind him, nor in the very room he was. Nevertheless, he whirled around.

“Master Qui-gon? But… How?”

“This is not the most important issue for now, Anakin. For now, you have to help your son.”

“I knew it! I knew he would try to kill him!”

“It’s much worse than that. He’s trying to turn him against you, as he did with you against Obi-Wan and the Jedi. He’s using the very same technique. You know how this will end.”

“That old fool won’t survive long, that I can tell you.”

“Don’t be rash, Anakin. This would prove him right to your son’s eyes. You may end up killed by your own flesh and blood. Why do you think he instructed you to give Luke’s lightsaber back?”

“What do you suggest then? That I sit around and let him replace me?!”

“No, Anakin. What I suggest is that you enter his game. He will not hurt you as long as Luke is with him. He has too much to loose. However, what I will ask of you will be difficult.”

“What is it?”

“You will have to respond to his arguments and defend the Jedi.”

“Never!” Vader barked. After a short breath, he cried again:

“Never! I agree to save my son from this old bastard, but I WILL NEVER BE THE JEDI’S ATTORNEY!”

“This is the only way, Anakin. The Emperor will charge you with the worst crimes to blacken your image in your son’s mind. You have to defend yourself, if not the Jedi. Stand against your master! Confront him like you used to do with Obi-Wan!”

“What if I don’t?”

“If you don’t, I fear you won’t last long against the Emperor’s new apprentice.”

Vader thought for a long time. He finally stepped out of his chamber and went straight to the Emperor’s throne room.
**********

The Emperor went on, this time showing admiration and respect towards his topic.

“Lord Bane was an exceptional Sith Lord, a true leader. He single-handedly created a new order, an elite order. Although he kept the name of the Sith, he utterly renewed it. I think that you understand this better than anyone considering your current position. He was indeed forced to renew it considering the terrifying threat the Jedi were posing to his and his apprentice’s very lives. Don’t be fooled by those who claim they served peace and justice at this time, Lord Skywalker. Once the war was over, the Jedi took full control of the systems the Republic had annexed, often against their own wills. This was called “democracy and freedom,” if my memory serves me well. The Republic was created and enforced its law throughout the entire galaxy. Nobody would escape this tyranny, except for several worlds in the Outer Rim.

“Mark my words, though, Lord Skywalker. I do not say that those worlds which didn’t fall under the Republic’s boots were properly governed. On Tatooine, for example, the Hutts took full control of the planet, which resulted in the government you know. By the way, I forgot to thank you for the excellent job you did killing this worm of Jabba. I dare even congratulate you.

“Anyway, Darth Bane fully understood that he couldn’t do anything against the Jedi’s power if he followed a straight line. He didn’t want to risk another war. The archives I possess show his extraordinary intelligence and perception of the world. He understood that, to voice his opinion – although this would have to be done very carefully -, he had to be part of a civilian government. Unfortunately, he was never elected, for he never had the chance to be. He dared not expose himself too much considering he hadn’t mastered his full powers; he feared that the Jedi would discover and murder him, once and for all, if he ever stood for an election.”

“Pardon me, Emperor,” Luke said, “but what exactly did he believe? Can you tell me that? In other words, what were his ideas you so eagerly defend here?”

“Yes, of course. I was about to explain this to you anyway. Darth Bane analyzed the Jedi code and their ways in practice. He naturally understood the flaws there are in this very code. I think you know this code, but I shall remind you of it:

“There is no emotion; there is peace.
“There is no ignorance; there is knowledge.
“There is no passion; there is serenity.
“There is no chaos; there is harmony.
“There is no death; there is the Force.

“Now, as you can see, this code clearly demonstrates the dictatorship of the Jedi order. Those kind people believed they knew each and every aspect of the universe. As for me, and I dare believe it is the same for you, I do certainly not pretend that I know everything. I may know a lot of things, but there are many things I never learnt, whether I didn’t bother to do so, or whether I didn’t have the chance. With this Code, the Jedi created some kind of idealistic order, which no specie can be part of since no one is perfect. Those five truths they proclaim are five lies, the most dangerous concerning peace itself. For I ask you: what is peace? Is peace a part of this world? Has it ever been? Is peace what you can currently see through this viewport?”

The Emperor gestured towards the circular window behind the throne. Luke followed the gesture, and was speechless: for, before his very eyes, the biggest space battle that he had ever seen had just started. He shivered.

“Obviously,” the Emperor said, “all of this is not what one may call peace. This was where Darth Bane started from. The Sith code is founded on the revocation of this lie. Henceforth, it holds the following:
“Peace is a lie; there is only passion.
“Through passion, I gain strength.
“Through strength, I gain power.
“Through power, I gain victory.
“Through victory, my chains are broken.
“The Force shall free me.

“I leave those codes to your own judgment. I pray you consider them carefully and you understand the truth.

“As for the famous Rule of two, which was the other aspect of the Sith order Darth Bane instituted, it was a necessity. Indeed, the order had to survive, but it also had to remain hidden so that the Jedi would not discover it. Therefore, Darth Bane only took one apprentice and instructed him to do the same once he would be dead.”

At this very moment, the doors of the elevator opened and Darth Vader stepped into the room. Cold anger rolled in waves from his mind.

A/N: I picked the two codes on Wikipedia.
Hope you enjoyed, and thanks for reading anyway. Again, reviews are most welcome! grin

Sidious is very convincing isn't he!
He is also very conniving.

Yahoo Qui-Gon is trying to help.
“Don’t be rash, Anakin. This would prove him right to your son’s eyes. You may end up killed by your own flesh and blood. Why do you think he instructed you to give Luke’s lightsaber back?”
Will Vader listen this time.

At this very moment, the doors of the elevator opened and Darth Vader stepped into the room. Cold anger rolled in waves from his mind.
Way to go Vader, save your son or your wife may come back to haunt you. devil

Great update I like it.
