500,000 CREDITS
by Onoto

Commander Levitt flipped through the HoloNet channels, his feet on the desk before him. Lieutenant Dallada was dozing at his own desk. It had been a quiet day on Tatooine. No one had entered the recruiting station all day, so Levitt and Dallada had absolutely nothing to do.

“Captain Mevoron, the Count was killed not by Jerek Ruuble, his old political adversary, but by his own wife! She was env-“

Click. Another blasted Geo Harr picture. Levitt wondered when the marathon would end.

“Jesk Orien, the three-time reigning Galactic Smashball Player of the Year, signed with the Coruscant Capitals earlier today. The ex-Dreadnaught’s contract is reportedly worth more than 500,000 credits.“

“Damned Capitals,” Levitt said. “They bought up Rannik last year, and now Orien! 500,000 credits. You could buy a fleet with enough left for a planet.”

Dallada roused himself and considered the point. “If anyone’s worth it, the Dread Pirate is. I saw him in person when I was on leave last year. The man can score.” The lieutenant glanced at the holovid. The analysts were now discussing the impact the signing would have on the sporting universe.

“No doubt about that,” the commander replied. He sighed. “I don’t want to listen to these talking holo heads.”

“I think the Alderaan Invitational’s on.”

“We don’t get the Greenputt Channel. The sport isn’t popular enough around here.”

“Well, damn.” Dallada leaned back in his chair and started to doze again. Commander Levitt changed stations again.

“Oh, Dorrel! Do you really love me? Because if you do, you have a funny way of showing it!”

“I do, Kya, it’s just that sometimes a man doesn’t think when he’s around a beautiful woman.”

“So, are you saying I’m not a beautiful woman?”

“No, baby. Let me show you what I think of you.”

Dallada perked up at those lines. “They showed this feature last night. Dorrel and Kya are about to make up.” Dallada chuckled.

Levitt glanced at his first (and only) officer. “I don’t think so, Lieutenant. Imperial officers must maintain some level of decorum while on duty.”

Dallada sighed. “Oh, well.” He closed his eyes again.

Commander Levitt switched off the holovid. He turned to face the Lieutenant. Dallada was a young, lean man, but he had already lost most of his lightly colored hair. His off-kilter hat hid his baldness. Levitt himself was about ten years Dallada’s senior, and more solidly built.

“Dallada, can I ask you a question?”

The younger man’s eyes remained shut. “If it’s why the Dreadnoughts allowed the greatest player in smashball history to leave in his prime, I’ve got 500,000 answers.”

The commander laughed. “No, it’s personal.”

The lieutenant sat up. “OK, then. Shoot.”

“You ever had a girl?”

The lieutenant thought about that for a second. “Well, when I was stationed on Nar Shaddaa, I met these two dancers, and-“

“No,” Levitt cut him off, “Have you ever had a girlfriend, someone you saw for a long time?”

Dallada puzzled over that for a moment. “There was this girl back home, before I enlisted. We’d known each other for about ten years, and we were pretty close.”

“What happened?”

“These are rather personal questions, Commander. Why do you ask?”

Levitt sighed and leaned back. “I’ve just been thinking about things.”

“Things?”

“Things.”

“Can I ask?”

“If I can ask you.”

“You can ask.”

“What happened?”

“She wanted to get married and start a family and everything. I was still trying to make it as a swoop racer and I wasn’t ready for all that. She wasn’t willing to wait for me.” Dallada looked at the ceiling in frustration. “She married a friend of mine. When racing didn’t work out, I enlisted.”

“I’m sorry.”

“What about you?”

“I have a wife. I met her on Alderaan just after I left the academy. She’s still there.” Levitt rubbed his tired face. “With the kids.”

“I didn’t know you were a father. How old are they?”

Levitt leaned back and put his hands behind his head. “My oldest is seven. My little girl is three. The baby is almost a year now. I’ve never seen him.”

“I’m sorry, Commander,” Dallada answered. “Sir, can I ask a question?”

The commander nodded.

“Why don’t you bring them here? The officer’s at my last post had theirs with them.”

“Because, Lieutenant, it is dangerous here, and I will not drag my children all over the galaxy. My wife can lean on her family for support, and my children can have a perfectly normal upbringing without me.”

Dallada considered that. “What made you think about families and love and whatnot?”

“I was wondering why I’m sitting on this dusty piece of rock watching the HoloNet when my family is halfway across the galaxy. Why I’m encouraging young men to sign up so they can sit on a dusty rock watching the HoloNet when their family is halfway across the galaxy.” He took a deep breath and exhaled slowly.

“It’s been a bad day, sir. Nobody gets anybody during the harvest season. You’ll feel better in the morning.”

“I’ve been a officer in the Imperial Navy for 15 years, Lieutenant. 5 more and I can retire with full benefits. 5 more years.” Levitt meditated on that fact. Dallada allowed his commanding officer a few moments before standing up.

“Shall we close up, Commander?”

Commander Levitt nodded and stood up. “I’ll shut down the computer terminals. You’re dismissed, Lieutenant.”

Lieutenant Dallada started for the door, but then turned around. Dallada caught his superior’s eye. “You want to get some Jawa Juice, sir? I think I know a guy who can get us the Greenputt Channel.”

Commander Levitt offered his first officer a small, but genuine smile. “Thanks, Dallada. That’d be great.”

The two Imperial officers left the recruiting station and headed for the cantina, all the while discussing the Coruscant Capital’s newest star and what they would do with 500,000 credits.

THE END

I hope you enjoyed 500,000 CREDITS. Thank you for reading.

TigerofRobare: Especially since Levitt's family is on Alderaan. This story happens just before ANH.

VaderLVR64: I appreciate the applause. This is one of my real first attempts at SW fan fiction, so it's nice to know folks enjoyed it.

I have two betas looking this over for the archive. One of them has just gotten back to me and said 500,000 CREDITS is ready for submission. As soon as Beta #2 gives me the okay, I'll send it in. I'll keep y'all posted. Thanks for reading.

Thanks to everyone who has read this story, whether they reviewed or not.

Beta #2 just sent me a message saying she thinks the story is ready, but she wants to go over it a few times more, just to make sure. I'm currently undergoing a computer transition, so I don't have access to me files right now anyways, so it's fine. Assuming Beta #2 doesn't find anything horribly wrong with it on the next time through, I will submit the story by the end of the week.

Once again, thanks for reading.

Well, Beta #2 did not find anything wrong, so I submitted 500,000 Credits just a little while ago. Wish me luck. I'll keep everyone posted.

One side note: I'm registered as Thokk for the archive, not Onoto, so if it is archived don't send nasty mesages to Thokk accusing him of plagiarism.

Thanks for reading!

Aww, great story. I really liked how you portrayed the two- you didn't make them twisted, awful people just because they worked for the Empire. They were just people.

People in difficult situations, no less. Poor Levitt. sad

Darth Muis: Thanks for the support. I hope the reviewers feel the same way!

ZekksGoddess: I appreciate it. I figured that to most people in the GFFA, the Empire is fine, and probably isn't much different than the Republic. I thought about writing this from a rebel's point of view, but I've seen stories like that before. I personally wanted to see a normal Imperial officer, not just the super bad guys we see in the movies or read about in the books. I think it makes the universe more realistic if most of the guys working for the evil Empire aren't bad guys at all.

I have an announcement: I liked writing Levitt and Dallada so much that I'm working on another story about them! I'll post a link on this thread when I finish it.

Thanks for reading!

It definitley does...it puts things into more of a gray perspective rather than black in white. And it makes things much more complex, which is always more fun for writers. wink

ZekksGoddess: It is a lot more fun! it makes ideas easier to come up with it, too. I sat down to brainstorm what I wanted to have Levitt and Dallada do and I came up with eight very writable ideas. Some of them are of pretty good size too.

I expect to have another finished within the next couple of weeks. Here's a little teaser for the next story in the Levitt and Dallada series, The Firearms Proficiency Test

“Hello, Officer of the Galactic Empire. According to your official record, it has been six months since your last Firearms Proficiency Test. Please report to your local Imperial Command Center within the next five days to complete this mandatory examination. Failure to do so will result in demotion and/or discharge.

“Also, Imperial High Command has raised the minimum passing score on the Firearms Proficiency Test. This change was made to address concerns over the accuracy of Imperial soldiers. Instead of only requiring a seven hundred out of a possible thousand points, officers are required to score at least seven hundred and fifty points. Failure will result in demotion and/or discharge.

“Long live the Emperor of the Galactic Empire!”
The hologram recording blinked out.

“I’ve never understood that phrase,” Levitt said. “How can you demote a discharged officer?”

Dallada shrugged. “Command could probably destroy a planet if they wanted to.”

“I’m telling you, that Death Star thing is propaganda.”

Dallada waved his hand. “It doesn’t matter whether I’m demoted, discharged, or deep-fried. If I fail this test, which I will, my career is cooked.”

Levitt got up and walked over to the forlorn Lieutenant. He patted him on the shoulder. “We have a couple of days before we need to check in. I can probably help you a little bit. I’ve gotten a perfect a few times, so I could probably teach you something useful.”

Dallada looked up at his commander. His eyes were almost moist with gratitude. “That’d be great, Commander Levitt. I don’t feel like living with mother just yet.”

****

I hope that appeals to you all. I'll PM anyone who wants to know when I've finished it.

Wow that was a very interesting vignette here. You know that's one thing you never think of in the movies is that even the bad guys have wives, families and children. This makes the Imperials seem human. Excellent work.

ZekksGoddess: I'm glad you're interested in the next story. I'll PM you when it's done.

Layren: Thanks. That's exactly the reaction I was aiming for.

Darth Muis: I'm hungry too. It's lunchtime. And I'd be happy to PM you.

Okay, I've just finished the first draft of The Firearms Proficiency Test. It is much longer than the first one (though I think it will still be a single post), and it needs a little tinkering, but I expect to have it posted by the middle of next week. I've gotten a lot of writing done because I've been sick as a dog this week. And I was sick the three months before that, too, so I'm practically Mercedes Lackey when it comes to volume. Unfortunately, a lot of it was junk, so it took a little time to find something postable. Anyways, back to the stories you guys will actually get a chance to read...

I've decided not to post a new thread for each story, but instead rename this thread "The Levitt & Dallada Stories - Most Recent Story Name". Each story can stand alone, but I think people will enjoy it more if they see all of the stories in order. I'll rename this thread when I post the next story, so keep an eye out, just in case you're not on the PM list or I accidentally send the PM to the wrong person.

And finally, 500,000 Credits is being reviewed for the archive as we speak. No news yet. Keep your fingers crossed. I've wanted to be archived for years, and Credits is the first story I've had with true potential. If it does get archived, I'll only have one major goal left: win an award. Maybe this series will be the one to do it...

That's all for now. Thanks for reading! The support means a lot!
