After the success of Part one of my little "trilogy" (http://boards.theforce.net/the_saga/b10476/24432246/p1/?9) and a long hiatus from writing because of Darth Real Life, I've decided to bring you the second installment of my Angsty Songfic Trilogy. This one uses "Existentialism on Prom Night" by Straylight Run. I've always loved this song, and I really envisioned this piece to go along with the music. Enjoy!
Title: Sing Me Anything
Author: Discorpor8
Genre: Songfic, Angst, Romance
Characters: Obi-Wan, Siri
Timeframe: Clone Wars (between AotC and RotS)
Summary: Obi-Wan and Siri decide to renounce their love for one another.
Disclaimer: "Existentialism on Prom Night" belongs to Straylight Run; all SW characters belong to the great George Lucas.
When the sun came up, we were sleeping in
Sunk inside our blankets, sprawled across the bed...
Harsh rays of sunlight filtered into the room through the gaps in the blinds. Obi-Wan rubbed his eyes and squinted at the still-dim room. The only shape he could make out was Siri's sleeping form. He wished that the sun hadn't come up and interrupted his blissful sleep.
We're dreaming.
Sitting up, he remembered those words she said; "We have to end this, Obi-Wan," she told him. Why had he let a silly infatuation spiral out of control into this? And now he had to stop loving the one person he---how could he put it---willingly cared about. Much as he had bonded with Anakin, it wasn't as if he had a choice. But Siri was right. He had to end it. Not only for his sake, but for the sake of his padawan.
There are moments when, when I know it and
The world revolves around us
And we're keeping it, keeping it all going
This delicate balance
Vulnerable, all-knowing
"Morning," Siri mumbled as she untangled herself from the covers. How could she be so nonchalant after telling Obi-Wan that they could not love each other?
"Siri..." Obi-Wan glanced at her from across the bed. He wished that he could forget the Jedi, wished that he could throw common sense and caution to the wind, if just for a moment. Anything to stop this dream from fading away.
"Obi-Wan, we can't juggle our love and the Jedi Order forever. In the end, it's best that we do this." She refused to look at him. If she did, she would fall back into this trap again. She did love him. She didn't want to let him go. But she and he both knew it was their duty.
Sing like you think no one's listening
"There's still a few minutes before I leave," Obi-Wan said as he threw on his tunic. Siri blinked back a tear. He was leaving for yet another campaign on some Force-forsaken rock, and Siri felt a sudden pang of guilt for breaking the news that they had to end their relationship when she did. What if he didn't come back this time?
"What are we supposed to do?" asked Siri, finally looking him in the eye. Obi-Wan didn't answer. He hummed a simple, familiar tune as he finished pulling on his boots. Siri recognized it immediately. It was an old love song that she hated before she met Obi-Wan. They used to play it at all the cantinas. She knew she was in love when its sappy lyrics sounded true when Obi-Wan sang the song, no matter how off-key he was.
"Please don't hum that," she whispered. He had sung it to her last night as they drifted off to sleep, and she had let that be the last time she'd ever let that song be anything more than a stupid love song.
You would kill for this, just a little bit
Just a little bit
You would, you would
Sing like you think no one's listening
Obi-Wan stopped humming. "What would you like me to hum, then? I'll take requests," Siri, in spite of herself, burst out laughing. Obi-Wan smiled sadly. Would that be the last time he'd hear her laugh at one of his jokes? He turned and clipped his lightsaber to his utility belt.
"Take care of yourself, General Kenobi," Siri hugged him tightly.
"You too, Master Tachi," said Obi-Wan. The hug was tight and intimate, but he felt detached from her. 'It's for the better,' he told himself.
You would kill for this, just a little bit
Just a little bit
You would, you would
On the ship en route to battle, Obi-Wan leaned back and once again hummed that familiar song. Was he on the path to the Dark Side for keeping one last vestige of his love for Siri? He hoped not.
Sing me something soft, sad and delicate
Or loud and out of key, sing me anything
He had to focus. 'Think of the task at hand,' he told himself. 'I am General Kenobi for now.'
We're glad for what we've got,
Done with what we've lost
Our whole lives laid out right in front of us
Siri went through the day in a fog. All she could do was hum that song. Why did he have to put that into her head, of all days? Her mind couldn't move away from Obi-Wan or that stupid love song. "You stupid gundark, Obi-Wan," she muttered. Anything to make herself stop humming.
Sing like you think no one's listening
You would kill for this, just a little bit
Just a little bit
You would, you would...
Was that a tear she felt rolling down her cheek? Siri cradled her head in her hands. This was her decision. But she never imagined it would be this hard.
Obi-Wan sighed and drifted back to the cramped room he'd come to call his quarters during the trip to whatever Force-forsaken planet the Droid Army had decided to invade. He was a Jedi. He could easily best whole battalions of battle droids, he'd killed a Sith Lord, yet something so simple as this was more difficult than anything else.
But it was a necessary decision. As the ship arced toward its destination, Obi-Wan hummed their love song one last time.
Sing me something soft, sad and delicate
Or loud and out of key
Sing me anything
END
Please R&R! The third installment will be coming soon; for that one, I will be using the English translation of "O Fortuna" by Carl Orff. Stay tuned!

OMG! That was great!

"Fate Strikes Down the String Man" will be complete and up in just under a week! In the meantime, I'm working on the ultimate guide to writing the perfect songfic.
