Chapter 2
The boy who had thought he would become a Jedi became instead a famous pod racer. “I still worry every time you start a race,” his mother fussed one day when he was just fourteen. But if it had an engine, Anakin could race it – he
had
to race it. He coaxed more speed from his machines than anyone thought possible, and he did so with an effortless grace that awed those who watched him.
Anakin cradled her face in his hands, and stared into her eyes. His body had grown long and lanky, his shoulders just starting to broaden. “I’m not going to die in a pod race, Mom,” he assured her in a voice that had started to crack.
Shmi smiled and kissed him. “I know, Anakin,” she whispered. “But still, for me…be careful.”
Anakin threw back his head and laughed. “Careful doesn’t win races,” he told her. But then his expression sobered and he gathered her into his arms. “I just want to give you the best of everything, Mom. Everything that you deserve.”
“I’d rather have
you
,” she corrected him.
“You always will,” he vowed. With that he climbed in one of his racers and prepared to win yet another race. And he had done so. Easily. Shmi still watched him race with her heart in her throat, torn between closing her eyes and the need to look. After every race he would give her a jaunty wave as he took his victory lap and she would shake her head with exasperated pride.
A year later, there were three gleaming pod racers in the garage, all of them meticulously maintained by the boy who raced them. He tended to them as if they were his children, worrying over every small detail. He felt at peace there, tinkering with the machinery that was making him rich.
After yet another effortless victory, he enjoyed a meal with is mother. “When will it be enough, Anakin?” she asked softly as she picked at her food.
He shrugged and stared off into the distance. It was a beautiful planet, lovely and green and rich in life, but it would never compare to Naboo. He wondered what
she
was doing now, where she was. “When it is,” he answered his mother. Then he met her eyes. “I’ll know when it’s time to quit. That’s years away, but I’ll know.”
Shmi stared at him and then gave a short nod of her head. “I trust you.” Then she sighed and pushed back from the table. “I want to go home, Anakin,” she said suddenly. “I need to feel the sand beneath my feet again, see the suns rise up high in a bright blue sky.” She shook her head. “This isn’t for me, this life you lead.”
“I need you,” Anakin whispered, reaching across to take her hand.
Shmi smiled and cupped his chin with her still-callused hand. “No, you don’t,” she contradicted. “But that just means I’ve done my job.”
Anakin considered her words for a moment. “All right, I’ll arrange for a transport to take you home.” Then he looked out over the forest beneath their balcony. “There’s only a few months left on this season’s racing circuit anyway.” He grinned. “Then we’ll both be home.” Anakin winked. “And what will you do with yourself without me to hover over?”
Shmi laughed and patted his hand. “I’ve thought about starting my own business,” she admitted quietly.
“Let me know how much you need,” Anakin answered without hesitation.
She would have argued, but she knew her son too well and so accepted his generosity with an open heart. Anakin had always been bighearted, and now that he had the means, he found joy in giving to others – especially to her.
Not long after he arrived home, he noticed a certain glow in his mother’s face, a sparkle of happiness he had never seen before. It was not long before he realized that it was a man who had put that gleam there. A farmer of all things, a craggy, dusty farmer…and yet Shmi was transformed by his presence.
When his mother was with Cliegg Lars she became a girl again and Anakin could not begrudge her happiness. She had known little enough of it in the years before. The day came when he watched his mother exchange marriage vows with Cliegg Lars and he knew that their lives would never be the same.
He was glad his mother had found joy, but began to wonder if he would ever experience that same contentment for himself.
By the time he celebrated the end of his teens, Anakin Skywalker had built a fine large house, which he presented to his mother and her husband. Shmi had tears in her eyes as he placed the deed in her hand and together they opened the gate and walked through the courtyard. At Anakin’s urging, Cliegg Lars gave up farming and devoted all of his time and attention to the business Shmi had built. Young Owen soon joined them, learning the workings of the business from the ground up.
Like her son, Shmi showed an affinity for things mechanical and the shop, which sold parts was the most successful in Mos Espa. Owen was quite a talented mechanic himself, learning under Anakin’s tutelage when he could.
It had been a good life so far, and Anakin had seen many of those stars he had once gazed up at it wonder. Racing took him all over the galaxy, brought him into the company of kings and criminals. He accepted them all with the same ironic sense of humor, that they would seek
him
out, the little boy who had been born a slave and rejected by the Jedi.
His few days with the Jedi eventually faded in his memory. It had been an exciting and terrifying time, but his path had led him back to his home, to his mother, and his even more precious dream of freeing her had come true. There was still room in his heart to admire the Jedi, but he could look on that dream now as a childish whimsy, outgrown and put away as he moved on to a bigger and better dream.
Anakin lived to race and raced to live.
He was happy, content at least. And if there was
something
missing, some small part of himself that was not fulfilled, he could ignore it for the most part.
Still, his mother saw his discontent. Shmi had found love late in life, but it was no less sweet for the delay. She wanted the same happiness for her son; she wanted him to feel that intimate connection that bound two lives together.
And on the eve of yet another Boonta Eve Classic, she went to him.
As was his habit, he was sitting by the fountain in his garden, a rare and outrageous luxury on Tatooine. It was his way of reminding himself of all that he had accomplished. Whenever he felt uncertain or adrift, he went to his garden. Perhaps in some small way it reminded of Naboo, the place where he had once thought all of his dreams were coming true.
They had come true, he realized, just in a different way than he had imagined. It was enough, maybe better. Still, there were moments when he wished -
“Anakin,” she said softly, and he turned and greeted her with a smile. He had been dragging his fingers in the cool water, watching as the little fish came up to nibble at his hands.
“Mother,” he said in pleased surprise.
Sitting down beside him, she brushed back his hair, let her hand run down his bearded jaw. “You’re all grown up,” she said, sounding almost surprised.
Anakin grinned and shrugged. “For some time now, in case you haven’t noticed,” he teased.
“You need more than racing,” she said suddenly, her expression solemn.
His smile faded and he looked down into the water. “I’ve got more than I ever dreamed, Mom. What makes you think I even want more?”
“You do,” she replied with a mother’s certainty.
“You think you know me so well,” he could not help but be amused.
“Of course, I do,” she answered. “You’re my son. I’ve watched you grow from a boy to a man. I’ve seen the hunger on your face – you’ve always wanted something more, something
better.
” She gestured around her. “And you’ve gotten it. Well…most of it.” Shmi tilted her head as she studied him. “But there’s something else you want, something you don’t have. Not yet.”
“Then what do I want?” he asked, his chin rising up in that gesture she knew so well. She had touched a nerve.
“You want someone to love, and someone that will love you,” Shmi told him.
“There are many women willing to love me,” he reminded her and then chuckled as she blushed and shook her head.
“Stop trying to embarrass me. That’s not what I meant and you know it,” she chided. “I mean real love, not a fleeting passion with someone whose name you cannot remember in the morning.”
“I always remember their names,” he contradicted. “I just don’t always care.”
Shmi sighed deeply. “You’re being difficult.”
“I seem to be wired that way,” Anakin agreed.
“Your brother Owen is happily settled,” she murmured. “I just want the same for you.”
“I’m glad Owen and Beru are happy, Mom. I really am. But I’m not Owen.” Unbidden, an image of Padmé’s face rose up in his mind. She was laughing and in his imagination she leaned forward for a kiss. His lips tingled at the false memory.
“I know,” Shmi answered. “You want to be loved even more than Owen did, I think. You’re just too stubborn to admit it.”
“Mother,” he gave a sigh of exasperation. “I won’t deny that I wouldn’t turn my back on love if it arrived, but I’m not going to look for it.” Again, he wondered where Padmé was and what she was doing. She had retired from politics a few years ago and since then he had seen nothing of her on the holonews. Not that he was looking, he reminded himself. She was part of his past. He looked only to the future, that was his way, and it was one of the qualities that made him so successful.
“You can’t find something if you don’t look for it,” Shmi pointed out reasonably.
Anakin leaned over and gave his mother a kiss on the cheek. “If I’m meant to find love, it will find me,” he assured her.
“Difficult child,” Shmi muttered but her eyes shone with love.
“And you love me,” Anakin reminded her.
“I do,” Shmi agreed. “Though sometimes I don’t know why.”
~~~~~~~~
Later that night as he thought of his mother’s visit, her words kept repeating over and over in his mind. Love…
To himself, he could admit that he sometimes longed for love with an intensity that was almost frightening.
Shmi is right. Anakin is looking for love and he needs to stop sitting back and waiting for it to come to him. He should at least look up Padme, see what she is doing (and I have to wonder what she is doing). Or maybe he'll come across Obi-Wan. But I think, too, that Anakin is looking for something greater than himself and he'll not find it in fine houses and a settled life.
Great job.
Awwww, I'm loving this.
What a cool AU you have unfolding here!
Anakin is far different from the guy we're used to seeing, but there are still parts of him that remain the same: his stubbornness, his longing for Padme, his love for his mother. It's going to be fascinating to see how this different lifestyle ends up changing his path.
Lovely chapter! One of the things that I always look forward to when it comes to SW fanfiction is any type of AU - and yours are always off-the-charts spectacular. I can't wait to see what adventure you're setting us up for her. *claps hands happily*
Thanks for the PM - can't wait for more!
Oh such wonderful twists and turns you've taken with the story we know. Or "think" that we know...
“I need you,” Anakin whispered, reaching across to take her hand.
Shmi smiled and cupped his chin with her still-callused hand. “No, you don’t,” she contradicted. “But that just means I’ve done my job.”
Wow! I think Anakin really grew up in these lines. It's so good to see him able to stand on his own.
“You can’t find something if you don’t look for it,” Shmi pointed out reasonably.
Anakin leaned over and gave his mother a kiss on the cheek. “If I’m meant to find love, it will find me,” he assured her.
“Difficult child,” Shmi muttered but her eyes shone with love.
Fabulous!
I don't know if I've said this but this is a great story and a whole new and refreshing twist on things
!
I love how Anakin is all grown-up and thinking that he has everything...but in reality he needs to find that special someone who'll make his life complete
.
Excellent update!
I really like the unique style you're using with this. It's somewhat detached but you can feel the character's emotions just as well, if not better.
And Shmi is very wise. Anakin needs love and he can't be that stubborn about it.
Looking forward to the next post.
Awww. That alternate future is very sweet, and his generous spirit definately shows through
So I see he's been with a lot of women now. I shouldn't be surprised, since he's a handsome celebrity of sorts, but somehow always pictured him being only with Padme. I'm sure she'll find her way into his life soon though and his missing piece will be found
Shmi smiled and cupped his chin with her still-callused hand. “No, you don’t,” she contradicted. “But that just means I’ve done my job.”
Shmi is the example of the best kind of mother-one who provides love and support and knows exactly when and how to let go.
Very well written VaderLVR64. I love the insight that Shmi has for Anakin- wanting more, and wanting to be loved by someone else. I can't wait to see where you go with this. Please add me to the pm list if you have one please.
That was wonderful.
I loved how well Anakin took care of Shmi even after she married Clegg.
How well she does know her son. I hope Anakin will listen and go find Padme.
Great update
