ROTSFan I thought that using the Force in racing all those years would have given him a good connection. Not Jedi stuff, but pretty darn good. And since younglings could levitate (unless they're a Horn) then I thought Anakin could do it too!
ratna See note above! I see we're thinking alike here. Anakin hasn't had any contact with Obi-Wan, and I think he's the one person in the galaxy with whom Anakin would feel uncertain. The ending is written. At least it's outlined.
rhs007 Hope you like THIS one!
degausser I'll add you back. I might have messed up or the last one might not have been opened (in which case I don't like to flood your in box and so I stop)
Darth_Marrs You'll be seeing more of Obi-Wan, just not in THIS chapter!
randomangel22 How handy would THAT be!?
Waylela Obi-Wan has been brought in for a specific reason, we just won't find out what that is yet.
HandmaidenVeme These two are on each other's minds, even if only infrequently.
dianethx I thought it was sad, too. For both of them.
KELIA I could have used his skills these past few weeks.
EGKenobi Hope you like this post too.
Gina I'll PM you. Promise.
Kevin_Solo I'd want to claim him too!
MoAngel Media is media, even in GFFA!
Jedi_Master_Cazz Hopefully it won't be quite THAT bad!
Blue_Milkshake Yes, you'll see Obi-Wan again.
HCzGIRL481 It took a while, but here it is!
jedilegolas Thanks for reading.
yodadeciple96 Glad you like it!
DarkAnakinfan Let's just say that things are going to get shaken up a bit!
Helen_Taft Thank you so much! I love "what ifs"
Chapter 21
Planning a wedding was far more complicated than Padmé had anticipated. As soon as they had started discussing flowers and music and food, Cliegg and Ruwee had quickly made excuses and dismissed themselves. They ignored the pleading look that Anakin gave them and slipped away. They muttered something about keeping an eye on Pooja and Ryoo, which Anakin saw quite clearly was just a sneaky way out of having to talk about the wedding.
Sola was feeling a bit ill from the heat and had retreated to her cool, dark bedchamber. Anakin was a bit relieved to only be outnumbered three to one, instead of four. The trouble with planning a wedding was twofold. One, he had no idea what such planning entailed, and two, he had no idea what he preferred.
All he wanted was to marry Padmé.
His mother and Jobal had started talking about receptions and menus and guest lists, and his head started to spin. One look at Padmé had confirmed his suspicion that she felt as out of her depth as he did.
“Anakin,” Shmi said. “You’re not paying attention.”
“I’m sorry, what did you say?”
He did not see Shmi and Jobal exchange a look; he was too wrapped up in his own confusion. He did not notice that both of the women looked rather harried and harassed. Reaching for Padmé, he lightly squeezed her hand before releasing it. His palms were sweaty and he wiped them on his leggings.
“We really need to know what you want,” Jobal said. “Shmi and I have so much to do and we really must get started.”
Padmé looked at Anakin and gave a shrug as if to say, I think this is out of our hands now.
Gently, he patted her hand and then turned to his mother and Jobal. “I think what we both had in mind was something pretty simple…” he said quietly and the two women stopped talking to stare at him as if they had forgotten he was in the room. “You know, just the family and close friends.”
Still silent, Jobal and Shmi blinked at him. Anakin swallowed hard and cleared his throat. He glanced at Padmé, who was biting her lower lip. She gave him an imperceptible nod. Anakin knew that both of them would do almost anything to keep their mothers happy, even if it meant enduring a huge wedding. “But if you really want a-”
“Thank the goddess!” Shmi exclaimed, exhaling loudly, her shoulders slumping with relief.
Jobal laughed nervously, her hand fluttering up to her throat. “I’m so relieved to hear you say that, Anakin.”
Helplessly, he looked at Padmé, who seemed as shocked as he was by their reaction as he felt. “But I – we - thought you both wanted a big, lavish wedding.” They had certainly been chattering away about enough stupid details to give that impression, he thought sourly. Completely forgot that I was here! And I’m the one getting married.
Jobal smiled at him and then tilted up Padmé’s chin. “I wanted my daughter to be happy,” she corrected him. “And it would seem that you make her happy.” She kissed her daughter’s cheek softly. “So I think it’s safe to say we want the type of wedding that you two want.” She looked at Shmi and grinned. “But I think both your mother and I would both prefer a smaller affair.” Jobal shrugged. “I suppose we thought that someone in your position would want something…big.”
“Not me,” Anakin said with a shudder. “Padmé either, but we thought-”
“I didn’t want to disappoint you,” Padmé whispered.
“You never have,” Jobal assured her.
“Who else would you want to invite to the wedding?” Shmi asked, looking at both Anakin and Padmé.
Anakin shrugged. “I dunno, my crew of course.”
“Maybe a few of my friends from the Legislative Youth Program, and some of my handmaidens from my days as queen,” Padmé added. “Cordé and Sabé at least.”
“What about Palo?” her mother asked with a gleam in her eyes. “Should we invite him?”
“No,” Anakin and Padmé answered simultaneously.
Jobal laughed and winked at Shmi, who was clearly puzzled. “Her first crush,” she explained. Then Jobal tilted her head. “I never did much like that boy,” she murmured.
Anakin looked at Padmé and nodded solemnly. “Listen to your mother,” he advised.
“She’s very wise.”
“But what if she didn’t like you?” Padmé asked mischievously.
“In that case, your mother is a lovely woman, but not quite right in the head,” Anakin quipped instantly, tapping the side of his skull.
The three women laughed and Jobal gave Anakin a kiss to let him know there were no hard feelings. “All right then,” she said. “Let’s start planning this wedding. Even a small one can take months to plan.”
“Months?” Anakin asked in horror.
“I don’t want to wait months, Mom,” Padmé said worriedly, her hand slipping into Anakin’s as she turned to meet his eyes. “It seems like we’ve waited forever already.”
“Hardly,” Jobal scoffed. “You’ve known each other a long time, but you haven’t been together all that long.”
Shmi shook her head. “That’s where you’re wrong, I’m afraid, Jobal.” Her voice was gentle when she spoke, but they all heard the utter conviction in her words. “My boy’s been in love with your daughter since the day he met her.” She brushed her fingers over their clasped hands. “I’m just surprised it took them this long to find each other once again.”
“What she says,” Anakin said emphatically. “Listen to her. She knows what she’s talking about.”
“So you have a few people you’d like to invite, is that right Padmé?” Shmi asked.
“Yes,” Padmé answered. “Why?”
Shmi smiled secretively. “I’m just wondering how many there are that you’d like to be a the wedding that aren’t here yet.”
Padmé frowned thoughtfully. “Well, I guess about six or seven.”
Shmi turned to Anakin. “And you?”
He shrugged. “My crew’s all here,” he said. “I can’t really think of anyone that’s a friend that I’d want there.” He looked at Padmé. “We could make it a big deal, you know, if you want. Media everywhere, famous faces wandering around and offering you their best wishes.” He grinned. “Maybe even your favorite holovid star if I don’t get too jealous.”
“And not one of them will really care if we’re happy or not,” Padmé pointed out. “Publicity will be part of our lives as long as you’re racing,” she admitted. “I don’t like it, but I understand it and I accept it. It’s part of the territory. But that doesn’t mean that we have to give them our wedding, too.” She smiled. “This one thing, we can keep to ourselves. We don’t have to let them in on this.”
“No, we don’t,” Anakin agreed. He lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it, then turned to Jobal and Shmi. “All right, then. That’s settled – only friends and family. No business acquaintances, no media, nothing like that.”
“So there are only a few people you’d like to have at your wedding that aren’t actually here at this moment,” Shmi said yet again.
“I guess so.” Padmé glanced at Anakin, who appeared as puzzled as she felt. Finally, she simply asked, “What are you getting at?”
Instead of answering, Shmi asked Anakin, “With private transports, how long do you think it would take to get them here to Tatooine?”
“Well that would depend on their schedules,” he mused. “If they’d cooperate and simply get on a transport when I tell them to, then only a day or so.” He grinned at Padmé. “But if they’re friends of Padmé’s, then they probably won’t be so cooperative.”
“I’ll remember that,” she assured him.
“All right then, let’s say ten days, just to be on the safe side,” Shmi said briskly. “So is there any reason you two can’t be married in fourteen days?”
“None at all,” Anakin agreed with a grin. Then his smile faded and he looked at Padmé. “Unless you…”
For her answer, she threw her arms around her neck and began weeping. “I hope that’s a yes,” he observed dryly.
Jobal nodded. “I think that’s safe to say.” Then she gave a sigh and stood up. “I guess I’ve got some comm calls to make.” She leveled a look at Anakin. “And you’d better go tell the family what you’ve decided.”
“It was Mom’s idea!” he protested. “How come she doesn’t have to do it!?”

Wedding planning ranks right up there with 19th century dentistry as those things I enjoy least. They're smart letting the moms handle everything. Great post.

“We could make it a big deal, you know, if you want. Media everywhere, famous faces wandering around and offering you their best wishes.” He grinned. “Maybe even your favorite holovid star if I don’t get too jealous.” Aww! Reading this I got such a flashback of Anakin's pout from AOTC and when she was telling him about her first crush. Jealous!Anakin is sooo pretty!
I'm still loving this AU. I think you've captured them perfectly; which isn't easy in such a hugely different setting. Padme is still a generous-hearted person, but, I like how Anakin is more confident and free spirited. When I watch the movies I see elements of his being seriously repressed. Probably a result of being a warrior monk type person, so different than a renouned podracer.
More soon pretty please.

I must admit I've never planned a wedding but I'm sure there are pain to plan!
That was so cute when Anakin and Padme both didn't want Palo to come to the wedding.
Great post!

Wedding planning is for wedding planners. Any one else, it's like hacking off an arm with a rusty saw.
Great job. Just wish Obi-Wan was coming.

Good thing they got that all cleared up in the beginning! A little bit of misunderstanding can make a mountain of discontent when it comes to planning a wedding.

Wonderful mush! I'm very amused; because I'll be going to a friend's wedding in a few days, and remember listening to him talking about the preparations!
Sensible to let the two mothers do the work.
It's great that Anakin wants a small wedding, with just friends and family, not a big lavish one with lots of celebrities:
Gently, he patted her hand and then turned to his mother and Jobal. “I think what we both had in mind was something pretty simple…” he said quietly and the two women stopped talking to stare at him as if they had forgotten he was in the room. “You know, just the family and close friends.”

Well done, Ani! He's certainly more relaxed than in the original time line. If Padme also knows the difference between necessary publicity and unnecessary publicity, the marriage will be off to a good start!
So the wedding's going to be in only fourteen days? The time's going to go very quickly!
I loved the ending:
“None at all,” Anakin agreed with a grin. Then his smile faded and he looked at Padmé. “Unless you…”
For her answer, she threw her arms around her neck and began weeping. “I hope that’s a yes,” he observed dryly.
Jobal nodded. “I think that’s safe to say.” Then she gave a sigh and stood up. “I guess I’ve got some comm calls to make.” She leveled a look at Anakin. “And you’d better go tell the family what you’ve decided.”

Now, now Ani. It's your wedding you really should do something
I loved how totally out of his element and panicked he was when Shmi and Jobal started talking details.
At least they came to a peaceful solution.
Great update
