Gorgeous stuff, absolutely AU and yet so Star Wars in it's originality.
I particularly like how relaxed Anakin appears, and a beard...very nice...
Ahem, so can't wait for the next chapter, great job and thanks so much for the PM!

Terrific update.
I love how giving and mature your Anakin is in this fic.
I think he needs to go looking for Padme though and stop waiting for love to find him.
Can't wait for more.

“Careful doesn’t win races,” he told her.
Oh, doesn't Anakin know never to say that to a mother?
I love the interaction between mother and son in this story. Shmi knows Anakin better than he knows himself.

I hope you like where this is going. The destination is quite clear in my mind and I want everyone to enjoy the journey!

I’ve enjoyed writing a world where Anakin still has Shmi in his life, which I think is the biggest factor in changing his fate.

I’ve been a little hesitant about the writing style, but it just seemed the way to write this particular story. Still not sure why!

Chapter 3
The dream came to him sometimes. He could never predict when it would happen; there were no hints to betray its arrival in the light of day.
That night, his mother’s words echoing in his head, Anakin settled down to sleep in his bed. He would sleep alone tonight, vaguely troubled by the longings stirred up by the conversation with his mother.
It started the same way every time – on the ship that would take him to Coruscant. He was cold, shivering. But he was not alone.
She
was there.
“Space is cold,” Padmé said as she tucked a blanket around his trembling shoulders.
Anakin, miserable in the frigid confines of the ship and missing his mother terribly, saw her as his savior, his anchor in a new and confusing world. Qui-Gon was so busy, and his apprentice seemed reserved. But Padmé… She was a link to his mother in a way, and he had a secret. They were bound to one another by something magical; he sensed it,
knew
it for a fact.
Clutched in his hand had been the japor snippet, the one he had carved so carefully for her. He opened his hand and offered it up to her.
The smile on her face made every knick and cut on his hands well worth it. “Thank you,” she whispered and Anakin wanted to reach out. Something ancient in him reacted to her, but he did not know what it was.
“I’m going to marry you,” he said in a rush, and even he was surprised at the words. He had not intended to tell her what his dreams revealed to him about her.
Her eyes shone with laughter, but it was not cruel; she was merely amused at his audacity. “Really?” she asked, her doubt clear.
Nodding his head, he knew she did not take him seriously. That was understandable, of course. He was just a boy, a child. She could not know that the his dreams revealed things to him, showed him things that were yet to happen. He hardly understood it himself.
“Well then,” she said as she curled her fingers around the bit of japor. “I shall treasure this as the first gift from my future husband.”
Then she leaned forward and pressed a cool kiss on his forehead. “You should get some sleep, Anakin. We’ve got many things to do in the days ahead.”
Cocooned in the warmth of the blanket, Anakin nodded, feeling sleepy and satisfied. The first step had been taken, the first step on the long road toward the future they would share.
Anakin woke with a start, still feeling her kiss on his forehead.
As always, the dream left him restless and he got up with a groan, knowing that he would sleep no more that night.
Shrugging on a robe, he wandered out to the garden, soothed by the sound of the water tinkling in the fountain. He sat down on the edge; let his fingers trail through the cold pool, cooling his heated flesh, pushing the dream away.
He looked up in the sky, wondering if she was, at the very same moment, staring at the same stars. Laughing at himself, he shook his head. “Stop it,” he muttered. “You’re acting like a crazy man.”
Still, the thought would not leave him.
Where was she? Was she happy? Was she…married?
“Not that it matters to you,” Anakin grumbled. Briefly, he considered calling one of the women who seemed to crave his attention. They were all beautiful and sophisticated, too worldly to expect any commitment from him.
That was exactly what he needed – mindless physical union with no strings attached.
Or maybe you need something else entirely?
Instead of seeking out a companion who would help him pass the sleepless hours, Anakin sat in his garden, pondering the mysteries of the heart – and destiny.
~~~~~~~~~~
The planets may change, Anakin thought, but the faces seemed to be the same. Years of moving in the more elite circles of society had given him the polish that Tatooine could never provide. Now twenty-one years old, he could move and speak and act like those who had power. Anakin had power, but it was not in the sense that everyone thought.
They looked at him and saw a star, a big name in the high-stakes racing world. He was that, but there was more to him than they saw.
Anakin Skywalker was a very rich man, and quickly on his way to becoming even wealthier. Credits were power, and power was freedom. He was determined that his fate would never rest in any hands but his own.
He had recognized early in his career that racing was merely a stepping stone, a way to a better future and he never lost sight of its temporary nature. The day would come when his reflexes would slow just a bit, or he would be injured and never fully recover and the halcyon days of racing would be over. He could then either become a sad remnant of what he had been, living only in the glory days of his past, or he could make the most of his opportunities and prepare for a future without racing.
It was that realization that had led him to educate himself on financial matters. Seeking out those who had created financial empires for themselves, he had become a pupil. He had gleaned information from some of the most successful beings across the galaxy. Soaking up their knowledge, he had learned to invest wisely and spend carefully. Though he was impulsive, even reckless on the track, when it came to credits he was shrewd and cautious.
Repressing his wild nature had paid off and he had the credits to prove it.
Because he now had the luxury of accepting only the most prestigious of races, Anakin had more free time. He traveled the galaxy, attending to his investments, searching for new ones, keeping an eye on his empire. And it
was
an empire now, vast and far-reaching, something that a slave boy on Tatooine would have never dreamed of controlling.
He moved in different circles now, those of power and wealth. Racing had purchased his admission to that society and his wealth had kept him there. Those who expected to meet a mindless pod jockey were soon surprised at the depth and breadth of his knowledge. Keeping his interests under his watchful eye was a time consuming process and it required him to socialize among the elite of the galaxy. Where there was money, Anakin Skywalker could be found, his quick mind analyzing the information he gleaned at such functions.
So it was that he found himself back on Naboo.
Firmly, he told himself that he would not attempt to find
her.
It was true that he might have foregone this particular round of festivities. Racing was being celebrated, but he was not there to race.
His mother’s words came back to him, though, as he wandered through the elite crowd. They were clad in shimmersilks and velvets, their jewels winking at him with their movements. Anakin could not entirely prevent his eyes from scanning the crowd, looking for a cascade of dark curls, he could not help but stop when he heard soft, feminine laughter.
There was no reason to think she would be there. No reason at all. Still, something whispered to him, called out to him as clearly as when he raced and could see the track laid out before him, every twist and turn, every obstacle, each move his opponents would make. The crowd around him faded into a quiet buzz, and he was aware of them only as a background – just as he did in a race. He knew where they were and what they were doing, but he cared only how it would affect him.
He took a drink from his wine glass, wondering why he was so uncertain and anxious.
It’s just Naboo,
he told himself.
A planet like a thousand others – beautiful, to be sure – but just another planet.
Except…
It was her home, the place he had last seen her, the place where his dreams of being a Jedi had been crushed. For both good reasons and bad, Naboo was special to him. There had been a feel of destiny to it when he had first set foot on it again. The feel of the rich grasses beneath his boots had been both achingly familiar and surprisingly new.
Letting your imagination run away,
he thought.
Get a grip.
He stared off in the distance, studying the waterfalls that had been such an astonishing sight to him as a desert child. Their roar had made him cover his ears in delighted wonder as he laughed at the sight of so much water.
The feel of a hand on his shoulder made him turn. “Excuse me?”
He knew that voice in an instant, would have recognized it anywhere. Briefly, he wondered if he was imagining things.
The crashing cascade of the waterfalls filled his ears, even though he knew it was impossible.
“Anakin Skywalker?” she asked, tilting her head in bemusement.
She hasn’t changed,
was his first thought.
I still love her,
was his second.
I love the background on this. All the reasons why he was racing and growing his empire. That he would go back to Naboo seemed inevitable and right.
Loved this
Anakin Skywalker was a very rich man, and quickly on his way to becoming even wealthier. Credits were power, and power was freedom. He was determined that his fate would never rest in any hands but his own.
And I also loved that he recognized that he still loved her.
Great job. Looking forward to more!
I LOVE this story!
And this is your best chapter yet.
There was no reason to think she would be there. No reason at all. Still, something whispered to him, called out to him as clearly as when he raced and could see the track laid out before him, every twist and turn, every obstacle, each move his opponents would make. The crowd around him faded into a quiet buzz, and he was aware of them only as a background – just as he did in a race. He knew where they were and what they were doing, but he cared only how it would affect him.
You may not be a Jedi, dummy, but you're still strong in the Force. Listen to it!!!
But seriously, your words here are just beautiful.
“Anakin Skywalker?” she asked, tilting her head in bemusement.
She hasn’t changed, was his first thought.
I still love her, was his second.
.
Well, maybe Anakin will listen to his feelings and realize that Padme's the one for him
.
Vadey!
Do you want to know the sound I made at the end of this chapter?
Are you sure?
Okay, okay... it went something like this:
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
What can I say? You've got me right where you want me!
On a more serious note, this chapter was absolutely delightful! The build-up at the beginning to him actually finding her at the end was perfectly done. I loved it! You write Anakin so well - his emotions are rising and falling so realistically. I really feel like we're getting to know him better with every single update.
BRAVO! I can't wait to see where you're taking us!
Sweet, is the best word I have for this. It's so sweet.
It's also nice to see the contrast between this person and the Jedi Anakin.
