Chapter 30

Anakin could not hide his smile of pride as he watched Padmé interact with the crowd. It was a typical function as such things go, racers and those with enough credits and power to wrangle an invitation to the event, greeting each other, eating overcooked food and drinking ever-increasing amounts of alcohol.

Once he had dreaded such functions. It was sometimes difficult knowing that the only diversion would be to catch the eye of some attractive female and hope she wasn’t only interested in him because he raced pods and had his face blasted all over the holonet. Now, however, he had his wife at his side, and showing her off was fast becoming one of his favorite activities.

It helped that she was both beautiful and gracious, he admitted, hiding his grin in a glass of wine. She glanced at him even as she spoke with the Prime Minister of Someplace Important and the light in her eyes was for him alone. A quick look at the Minister told Anakin that he had fallen prey to Padmé’s charms as easily as her husband had.

Nodding at the somewhat overdone matron at his side, who looked at him as if he was one of the appetizers, Anakin moved toward his wife, placing a hand at the small of her back. She leaned into him unobtrusively and Anakin let his fingers trail over her exposed shoulder. When she gave a tiny shiver of reaction, he began wondering how quickly they could make their escape without seeming rude. After all, he had sponsors to appease. Padmé almost seemed to have sensed his thoughts because she looked up at him and her lips quirked and she gave a small shake of her head. Not yet, the gesture seemed to say. But soon, the glimmer in her eyes promised.

He gave a quiet sigh of regret and tried to behave himself, a task made no easier by the amount of skin the dress revealed. While he had appreciated the elegant lines of the gown in their room, he was now wondering if he should have insisted that she cover up from head to toe so that he would not be so tempted to tug her into an deserted corridor and show her just how much he wanted her.

The conversation swirled around him, though he paid little attention, distracted as he was by thoughts of what he was going to do when they were finally alone. Then someone else joined their small group and Anakin immediately recognized and dismissed him as one of the types who let a small bit of power go to his head. Restraining himself from rolling his eyes as he listened to the man ramble on, Anakin began contemplating violence when the man’s eyes lingered a bit too long on Padmé’s chest.

Too busy trying to decide how to teach the man to keep his eyes where they belonged, Anakin was not paying much attention to the conversation. Then he noticed a certain stiffness in Padmé’s posture, a rigidity that was more than a reaction to the man’s poor manners.

“…it won’t be long before the Republic finally figures out they don’t need those so-called guardians of peace,” the man said, giving a sniff of disdain.

“Excuse me?” Padmé asked. There was a cool note in her voice that almost distracted Anakin. Never had she appeared more regal than she did now, and though she was several centimeters shorter, she seemed to be looking down on the man. A part of him wanted to simply stand back and watch her reduce him to a quivering puddle of apologetic goo. Another part of him wanted to pound the man into the floor and gouge out his wandering eyes.

“The Jedi,” the man explained as if Padmé was simpleminded. “They’ve outlived their usefulness if you ask me.”

“Really?” Anakin asked, contributing for the first time. “What makes you say that? Mr. …?” Pounding him into a bloody mass was becoming more attractive.

“Dirax,” the man answered quickly, impatiently. “Come on now,” he continued. “We have the clone troopers. They’re cheap, expendable, and will follow orders without questions. Why do we even need the Jedi?”

Anakin shrugged. “I don’t know…maybe because they have a power you’ll never even be able to comprehend, much less appreciate? Or perhaps because they do what is right over what is expedient?” He curled his lip at Dirax. “Or maybe it’s because they’re not expendable,” he added. “A resource that’s too expendable is never spent wisely, is it? We take it for granted, waste it foolishly.”

“The clones are living beings,” Padmé said quietly.

“They’re grown in a lab,” Dirax said dismissively. “We can always grow more.”

Anakin gave the man a stiff smile. “Then let us hope that we never need the Jedi to keep us – and democracy – safe. Because they most certainly cannot be grown if we need more of them.” Nodding shortly at Dirax, he took Padmé by the elbow and led her away.

“Let’s go,” she murmured. “I’ve had enough.”

In silence, they walked back to their room, conveniently located in the same hotel where the party had been. With a sigh of relief, Anakin closed the door behind them. Padmé sank onto the bed and began pulling the hair pins from her hair, letting the dark mass fall about her shoulders. “Gods,” she said. “They’re as bad as politicians.”

Anakin gave her a slight smile. “Most of them are politicians,” he noted. “Besides,” he added with a tender kiss on her cheek. “I’ve met some rather fascinating politicians in my time.”

She put her arms around his neck and pulled him even closer. “I’d rather you didn’t associate me with politicians,” she told him. “I’m not sure they’re worthy of your time.”

His lips quirking in a smile, he cradled her face in his hands. “And who – in your esteemed opinion – is worthy?”

“I don’t know,” Padmé admitted. “Just not beings like him.” There was no doubt in Anakin’s mind to whom she referred.

“Unfortunately, it’s part of the job,” he said with a sigh of resignation. Frowning slightly, he brushed a bit of hair from her face. “Tell me…” He hesitated.

“What?”

“Is his opinion of the Jedi... Well, is it common now?”

To his surprise, Padmé got to her feet and began pacing restlessly. “Yes,” she finally said, stopping to meet his gaze. “And unfortunately, it’s getting more common.”

“But…why?”

“The Chancellor,” she answered without hesitation.

Anakin, who seldom paid attention to anything beyond news of the sporting world, suddenly felt as if he had woken up in a strange and somewhat dangerous place. He had met the Chancellor only briefly, and a former slave boy was of no interest to a man who ran the galaxy. He had seemed a somewhat boring man, benign and dignified in the slick manner typical of his ilk.

“I don’t understand,” Anakin admitted. “To be honest, I’ve never really followed politics – especially once a certain someone stepped out of the spotlight and began teaching.”

Usually that would have been enough to bring a smile and a blush to her face, but now she simply looked troubled. “Remember when I told you that I felt I had to leave the world of politics?” Her voice was soft, so quiet he had to strain to hear her words.

“Yes,” he answered. Then he paused, enlightenment coming to him. “Oh…”

“I couldn’t watch what Palpatine was doing anymore,” Padm explained. “Much less be a part of it. On one hand, there were those like Obi-Wan, who wanted to make a difference, to contribute something positive. Then there were those who… Well they knew only that they wanted to take as much as they could, while they could. And when I realized that I wasn’t going to be able to make a difference, much less to change it, I decided to opt out. To leave.” Shaking her head, she wrapped her arms around herself as if she was cold. “I was a coward, I know, but I just couldn’t do it anymore.”

“You couldn’t be a coward if you wanted to,” Anakin said heatedly, going to her and pulling her into his arms.

“I could,” she insisted, resting her head on his chest. “For a long time, I stayed anyway, convinced that even the smallest contributions made a difference somewhere…to someone. Then there started to be certain…incidences…”

“Like what?”

She was silent for a long moment. “Odd things, really, nothing you could put your finger on, but I wondered…”

“What?”

“Those who opposed Palpatine began to suffer from unfortunate circumstances,” she said. “It started off simply enough, a child refused entrance to a university, a promotion for a family member that simply never materialized, things like that.”

“But it didn’t stay simple,” Anakin guessed.

She shook her head. “No. Well, not all the time. If the recalcitrant politician began to tout the Chancellor’s policy, then everything was made right again. Quietly and unobtrusively right. The problems simply…went away. The university had a spot open, the promotion was suddenly on again, you know what I mean.”

“And if not?”

“Then more things would go wrong,” Padmé answered. “A ruinous scandal, rumors of the type that tore apart families, leaks to the press of wrong doing…it tended to escalate as time went on.”

“If someone continued to stand against the Chancellor?”

“Yes.” Padmé shivered. “And then…”

He felt her shudder in his embrace. “And then?”

“And then a senator simply disappeared.”

“Disappeared?”

“Gone, vanished.”

“Dead?”

She looked up at him, her dark eyes haunted. “I think so.”

“There’s more,” he prompted gently.

“It wasn’t just the senator who disappeared,” Padmé whispered. “His wife and child, too. They were simply gone.” Her eyes filled with tears. “He was my colleague, a like-minded friend in the senate. And I got scared, because I…I thought I might be next.”

“And so you left.”

She buried her face in his chest and Anakin felt something ripple through him, something strong and wild. “Oh gods,” he breathed shakily. “I’m so glad you did. So…glad.”

“I should have stayed,” Padmé whispered. “No matter the danger, I should have stayed.” She looked up at him. “But then someone sent me a holo of my nieces, of Ryoo and Pooja, playing in my mother’s garden. And I knew-” she shook her head. “I suspected…that if I didn’t retreat, my nieces would suffer.”

I love Anakins protectiveness of both Padme and the Jedi in his response to Desric. I am however a little worried about the situation Padme described and if it's possibilities will raise their head again.

“I suspected…that if I didn’t retreat, my nieces would suffer.”

I'm sure they would have angry angry angry

I'm curious to see what action, if any, Anakin will take now that he is learning of Palpatine's true nature.

It's very sad to see the Galaxy turn against the Jedi.

Great update

applause Uh oh...things are headed for intense-ness. What will Anakin do now that he knows of what the Chancellor and his dark cohorts are supporting? What is the force telling Obi Wan and his apprentice? And let's hope there are no dark forces aimed at Anakin in his first race since marrying the former troublesome senator. Great update...Love this long running fic. Reminds me of another popular long running fic that hasn't been updated in eons thinking

Jeez, I hope Palpatine doesn't find an excuse to get to the two of them, sounds like Palpatine has some outstanding issues to deal with when it comes to Padmé, I hope they can steer clear of him... worried

Oh my goodness, I cannot believe that I just now read this wonderful story. I don't know how I've missed it over the years I've been here. This is such a delightful AU, and it's getting even better with Padme's revelation as to why she left politics and Obi-Wan's fears. I must say, it is wonderful to see a happy Padme and Anakin. I hope it stays that way, but I do know that dark clouds are on the horizon.

Wow. That senator in this parallel universe with the unfortunate fate was Bail, wasn't it? sad

But at least Anakin's a lot less blind to Palpatine's wiles here.
