	You really have a way of tugging at the heartstrings. Despite everything Anakin's built up for himself, he's still alone. But now he's found Padme... and he STILL loves her, even after twelve years. I wonder what's become of Padme over that time? Could I be added back to your PM list? I had some massive DRL over the last few weeks which kept me from the computer. -----signature----- Would it help if I got out and pushed?

Slowly her eyes ran up his long, lean form and she gave a chagrined smile. “You’re all grown up.” Padmé laughed softly and shook her head. “I shouldn’t be surprised, I guess. It’s been-” “Eleven years and seven months,” Anakin interrupted before he could help himself. Then he bit his lip and shrugged, trying hard not to look embarrassed. “Or thereabouts,” he added with a wink. “You’ve grown up as handsome as I suspected you’d be,” Padmé said warmly. Anakin placed his hand on her elbow and discreetly directed her away from the crowd. Somewhat surprised that he had been able to speak, Anakin tried to still the trembling in his body. A light sheen of sweat broke out above his lip and he felt an almost irresistible urge to tug at his collar. Suddenly his clothing seemed too tight and he could feel a flush heating his face and neck. Stop it. Then they came to a quiet corner and she turned, their eyes meeting once more. She tilted her head back as she let her gaze travel up the lean length of him and she grinned. “My goodness, you’ve grown.” “A boy tends to do that in eleven years,” he said smoothly. “And seven months,” Padmé teased, her eyes glinting with laughter. He gave her the half-smile that worked so well the other women he knew and he was gratified to see an awareness of him as a man flicker in her eyes. He was much more than a boy she had once known; now she could see him as a man, a handsome and interesting man. At least, he hoped she found him interesting and handsome. For a moment, they both fell silent, staring at each other, each taking stock of the changes more than a decade had made. For Anakin, the years fell away in a blink and once more he was a lonely young boy holding fast to the memory of a new friend. He could almost feel the brush of her kiss on his forehead, the warmth of the blanket she had wrapped around his shivering shoulders. That memory was as fresh to him as the events of a few moments ago. He had a feeling it always would be. Padmé merely looked at him, clearly bemused and bewildered at the feelings he stirred inside of her. He saw her confusion in her eyes, the way her pulse sped up and her hand went to her throat. She was exquisitely aware of him; he heard it echo through the Force like a lover’s soft whisper. They were strangers, and yet… They were so much more – already. “May I invite you to dinner?” he asked suddenly, ending the moment because it threatened to overwhelm him. He could let himself drown in his awareness of her. Better to concentrate on mundane details, he cautioned himself. Don’t get ahead of yourself. She might even be married. Her eyes were still slightly dazed in surprise at seeing him again after so long and her laughter was slightly nervous. Then she looked down at the ground, glancing up at him through her lashes in a move that Anakin found utterly feminine, and yet laced with unconscious satisfaction. No married woman should have that look in her eyes. He wanted to laugh at himself, for how many times had a woman looked at him with an invitation in her eyes even as her husband turned to get her a drink? Countless. It had given him a tarnished view of marriage and if not for his mother’s example he might have thought true happiness was a myth. Perhaps it was so with Padmé, he thought with a touch of dismay. Was she like the others? Interested in nothing more than the latest thrill, jaded by the boring security of her very normal life? Was there a man waiting at home for her, wondering where she was? “I’d love that,” she said with a slight smile. “Is there….anyone you need to let know you’ll be late?” Anakin asked, knowing that if she said yes, his feelings for her would altered forever, that core of respect would be diminished. As if she sensed his unspoken question, she grinned at him. “I don’t live with my mother anymore, if that’s what you’re thinking.” But her eyes told him she knew exactly what he wanted to know. Something knotted inside of him loosened at her words. The question trembled on his tongue, but he could not speak it. If she was spoken for, he did not want to know. Not yet. He would allow himself the joy of her company for a few hours and then walk away and never look back. Who are you trying to convince? Anakin put away his fear and gave himself up to the moment, the reality of having Padmé back in his life, even if only for a short while. “Shall we go now?” he asked, holding out his arm in invitation. He was not going to give her a chance to change her mind, not if he could help it. She blinked at him in surprise. “Now?” Laughter escaped her and she covered her mouth with her hand as if embarrassed. Anakin, however, was charmed by the happy, carefree sound of it. His lips quirked and he nodded. “Aren’t you hungry?” Hesitating for a moment, she looked up at him once more and then grinned in agreement. “I’m starving!” she declared and she put her hand in the crook of his elbow. Her touch set him on fire with an exotic allure, and yet it felt comfortable – utterly familiar – at the same time. The dichotomy of his feelings unbalanced him and he tried to cover up his confusion with companionable silence. He needed time to adjust to seeing her again, having her at his side. Leading her toward a private dining area, he ordered some wine and asked for menus before he trusted himself to speak to her again. “What brought you here?” he asked. I wanted to see you. She would not say that, of course, it was silly to wish for it. “This gathering – you, to be precise - has been the topic of conversation for months now,” she answered with a slight shrug. “Everyone wanted to meet the young man who has taken the racing world by storm.” “So…a big fan of racing, are you?” he asked teasingly. Padmé blushed and looked down at the table, tracing circles with her nails. “I wasn’t,” she said softly, “until I saw you race one day…on the holonews.” Still, she would not look up and meet his gaze. Anakin was grateful for her shyness, because he knew that desire glowed hotly in his eyes at that moment and he was helpless to repress or deny it. He wanted her with every fiber of his being, and not just for a brief moment of passion. Possession was not what he wanted, he wanted to be a part of her life, and share his life with her. He wanted to give, to show her that he was worthy of her love. Reaching out, he tipped up her chin so that he could stare into the deep brown eyes that haunted his dreams. “I’ve thought about you,” he admitted, his voice going husky in spite of his efforts to control it. Her lips parted in surprise. “No you haven’t,” she protested breathlessly. “I fell in love with you when I was just a boy,” he reminded her. “I knew then that I could love you now, as a man. I’ve had no reason to change my opinion.” The recklessness that always lurked beneath the surface urged him on, made him say the things he knew he should not say. “You can’t love me,” she said. “You hardly know me.” She didn’t blink, however, met his eyes squarely. Something of what he felt inside sparked within her eyes as well. Souls meeting their match? Perhaps. Too soon to tell yet. Hedging your bets? “That’s true,” he allowed. “And maybe what I feel isn’t love.” Then he smiled and leaned in so close that her breath ghosted across his cheek. “But it could be.” “We’ve only just met,” she whispered rather weakly. “We’ve only just met again,” he corrected her. “We’ve known each other for years.” Her eyes widened at that and then she leaned back, removing herself from his touch and laughed, shaking her head. “You’re too charming for your own good, Anakin Skywalker.” Tapping out a staccato rhythm on the table, she seemed to struggle to regain her composure. When she looked up at him, he was reminded sharply that she had once been a queen. “You’re trying to sweep me off my feet,” she accused. “And doing a rather good job of it.” “Only because you knocked me off mine long ago,” he confessed softly and gently placed his hand over hers, stopping the restless motion of her fingers. “That only seems fair, don’t you think?” Under his hand, hers trembled and without thought, he linked his fingers with hers. “Tell me, Padmé…” he whispered, letting his thumb caress her soft palm. “Did you come here hoping to see me?” His eyes met hers. “Maybe,” she murmured. “I don’t know really. I guess so…” White teeth nibbled at her lower lip and Anakin repressed a groan. Then she gave him a speculative look. “Did you hope to see me?” she asked slyly. “I’ve wanted to see you every day since I left Naboo,” he admitted honestly. “Today was no different.” “But you’re on Naboo, my home,” she reminded him and a look of feminine triumph settled over lovely features. “I didn’t know if you still lived here,” he answered and some of the satisfaction slipped from her expression. “I didn’t even know if you were married.” He needed to hear her deny it, to know for sure. “I’m not,” she answered immediately and then blushed at her own quick response. Shrugging, she tried to pull her hand from his grasp, but he held on firmly, his touch still tender. Padmé frowned. “I’ve been following your career with interest, and you haven’t even cared enough to see if I got married.” Her tone was disgruntled, her expression troubled. “Oh, I cared,” Anakin said, pulling her hand closer to him and causing her to lean closer. “I just didn’t trust myself.” “Trust yourself?” she questioned softly. Grinning, he let his lips briefly graze over her cheek. 	LOVE IT! It's been such a stressful week over here in VA_Parky land. My husband and I are in the process of trying to buy a house, get ours ready to put on the market, etc. So you can imagine the hoops I've been jumping through. Yet it all fell away with this post! For the past several minutes, I have been lost amid a wonderful, warm sea of mush. And boy, am I enjoying it! Great, great post!! Thanks for the wonderful update. I love the way this is shaping up. Anakin and Padme are different people than they were when they first met, yet that connection is still there. BIG TIME. 	Wow, he's moving at lightspeed and she's really happy that he is. Love the banter. He's so much less awkward than as a padawan. I would have expected it, of course, since his life has been so different. He really is sweeping her off her feet. I just wonder if we will ever see Obi-Wan or if Anakin isn't the chosen one in this story. Great job. Thanks about the win. I'm having fun with the colors more than anything else. 	Wow! This is a very exciting story. The concept of Anakin as a rich and famous podracer is quite original, and his interaction with Padmé took my breath away.
