It seemed completely natural for Padmé to place her hand on his arm, to feel the sway of her hip against him as she walked, to detect the delicate scent of her hair on the breeze. The nearness of her made him feel dizzy and giddy and completely out of element. Every shred of confidence he thought had developed over the years seemed to have been swept away. He had imagined this moment a thousand times, a million, and yet the sweet reality of it far eclipsed any dream. “So tell me,” she said softly as they walked. “What does a man whose face is known all over the galaxy do to relax?” Anakin laughed and paused. Reaching out, he plucked a tiny flower and slipped it behind her ear. “I race…against myself,” he answered. “For fun, not for profit. There are lots of places on Tatooine where I can just…go.” And he knew that thrill of that, the release of it, was clear in his voice. “Just go?” she asked, her lips slightly parted. Then she tore her gaze away from his and they began walking once more. “So you still live on Tatooine?” “Yes, it suits me.” He hesitated. “I’m not sure why. Maybe I’m just a desert rat at heart.” “And you said your mother is free,” Padmé noted. Anakin nodded and grinned. “And so happily married that it’s almost obnoxious.” “That’s wonderful,” Padmé said, briefly leaning her head against his arm. He had to fight the impulse to urge her back when she straightened. “She deserves to be happy.” “Yes, she does.” He fell silent for a moment, wondering what his mother would think of him at this very moment. She would probably give him that smug “I told you” smile he both loved and hated. Padmé seemed to content to walk in silence and Anakin listened to the soft swish of her gown as she walked. They had lingered over dinner, talking and laughing about nothing important. He had regaled her with stories of his racing escapades and she had shared stories about her nieces, but they had spoken of nothing vital until now, just the bare facts of their lives. Anakin stopped and pulled her off the path. She tensed slightly and then relaxed when he simply leaned against a tree and grasped one of her hands. “I don’t bite, you know,” he teased when she stared at him with wide eyes. “Well…not much,” he admitted with a grin. Laughing, she shook her head at him and stepped a little closer. “You confuse me,” she confessed. He tilted his head as he studied her, so alluring as she stood in the moonlight, her eyes wide with confusion and the darkness of her hair falling over her shoulders. “I’m just what you see, Padmé.” For some reason, his words caused a shiver to run through her. He pulled her closer and wrapped his arms loosely around her. “You’re more than you seem, Anakin,” she whispered and he felt the warmth of her breath on his face. “Aren’t we all?” he asked softly. “I suppose we are.” He could see the rapid beat of her pulse in her throat and had to deny the urge to place his lips there and see if it tasted as sweet as he suspected it would. “What about you?” he asked in an effort to distract his mind from his desire. “No longer in politics?” Padmé sighed and he took advantage of her preoccupation to pull her even closer. “No…it wasn’t what I envisioned when I was younger.” “Too much corruption?” Anakin guessed. He had traveled the galaxy and seen first hand that those with the credits made the rules. “Something like that,” she said, but Anakin sensed that it was more than that. She was disillusioned with politics. There was a sense of betrayal in her words. “But I don’t want to talk about that. This is a moonlit garden, surely we can think of things to do other than talk about politics?” There was a challenge in her voice that he was more than willing to meet. “Like what?” “Use your imagination,” she whispered and moved so close that he could feel her softness pressed against him. “I’ve got a very good imagination,” he warned her as his lips moved closer. “I was hoping you’d say that.” Then his lips touched hers in their first real kiss and Anakin knew he could never let her go again. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Shmi’s face filled the screen. “Anakin?” she asked, her voice concerned. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing, Mom,” Anakin assured her, stifling a yawn. If she thought he was tired she would bully and nag until he agreed to get more sleep. But he was too exhilarated to sleep. He and Padmé had spent all night simply talking. Well, a bit of kissing, too. “I just wanted to let you know there’s been a change of plans.” “Oh?” she asked, her mother’s senses coming on full alert. Her eyes were sharp as she studied him. “What’s changed?” Trying to act nonchalant, Anakin shrugged. “Nothing much, Mom. I’m just going to spend some more time here, that’s all.” Shmi fell silent for a moment but Anakin thought he saw satisfaction glowing in his mother’s dark eyes. “Really?” Then she frowned slightly. “Are you sure that nothing’s wrong?” “I’m sure, Mom,” Anakin replied with a touch of exasperation. “You sound like you don’t trust me.” She gave him a dry look, arching one brow. “I know you, Anakin Skywalker. That’s why I’m asking.” “Nice, Mom, real nice,” he muttered, and this time the yawn escaped him. “You’re not getting enough sleep,” Shmi accused immediately. “I’m a grown man,” Anakin reminded her. “Doesn’t mean you don’t need sleep,” Shmi shot back smugly. “Even big boys need to get enough sleep.” “Mom,” Anakin groaned. “All right, all right, exhaust yourself,” Shmi said, sniffing delicately. “See if I care.” Anakin repressed a sigh. He had hurt her feelings and now must make amends. “Sorry, Mom. You’re right, I’m tired.” “I know,” she answered with infuriating certainty. “Yeah, yeah, you know all, see all,” Anakin teased. “I managed to keep you from killing yourself in one of those pods when you were a boy,” she pointed out. “Just remember that.” “Yeah, I get the point,” Anakin muttered. Shmi studied him carefully. “So, why are you staying?” He opened his mouth but Shmi said quickly, “And don’t give me any poodoo about scenery or just needing a change of pace.” Anakin had been hopeful she would forget that question in her zeal to remind him to get enough sleep. Shmi Lars, however, was not so easily dissuaded. “Uh…some things came up?” She rolled her eyes. “It’s not some woman is it?” She had a rather low opinion of some of his female companions and was not reluctant to let him know it. “As a matter of fact, it is,” he replied with a grin. “Oh, Anakin…” Shmi shook her head. “I don’t know why you can’t come home. There’s nothing there that you won’t find here – thrown at your feet, I might add.” Then she blushed when she realized what she had said. “I don’t know, Mom,” Anakin said. “I think this is a little different.” Her eyes shone with interest. “Really?” There was a wealth of curiosity in that word. “And why would you say that?” “Well, Mom, I’ve gotta go,” Anakin said, leaning forward to turn off the screen. “Talk to you later.” “Anakin Skywalker,” she warned. “Don’t you dare cut me off without telling me what you’re talking about.” He grinned widely. “Oh, I met Padmé again.” Then he turned off the screen. He would pay for that little stunt later, he knew. 	Haaaa!! AWESOME way to finish the chapter there, Vadey! I can only imagine the questions that are swirling around Shmi's mind right about now! Anakin is definitely going to catch it later, isn't he? It's so nice to see him like this though. He's so free and happy. Needless to say, the Padme mush at the beginning thrilled me to no end. I was eating up every word. What a lovely story this is! Such a great way to kick off my Friday! happy sigh I'm sorry my review isn't more coherent - I just seem to be a big puddle of mushy goo over here!!
