Next installment. Short and sweet. happy

Soaked and stinking of fish, Han Solo stood up on the wharf that the fishing trawler had dumped him on. He remembered getting sucked out of the Falcon and riding the river into a bay, and the rest was easy to figure out. Han wasn't so worried about himself as he was about Chewie and Padme—did the river take their bodies too? Had they spilled into the same place that Han had? And what about Leia? Where was she in all this? Had she even survived the crash?

Could she be trusted?

Unable and unwilling to think about such things when he was already in a bad mood, Han decided there was only one thing to do. The wharf was rife with cantinas, and the Spacer's Bistro caught his eye.

The fishy smell was even worse inside. Dirty, grimy, surly-looking fishermen and dockworkers messily guzzled drink after drink, the spilled ale adding another texture to the already pungent cantina. Han took solace in the fact that this filthy place was the cleanest-looking of all the cantinas he saw.

Han stepped up to the bartender, a silver-haired human with a sloppy mustache. “Corellian ale.” He flipped the bartender a decicred. “And information.”

“I have both.” The bartender filled the closest thing he had to a clean glass.

“Have you seen a big brown Wookiee or a brown-haired girl with an inflated opinion of herself? I'm looking for her mother, too. She looks a lot like her, but probably wouldn't be talking much.”

“Go space yourself,” the bartender snarled. “We don't allow their kind at these docks.”

“What? Wookiees?”

“Women.”

Han scratched his nose. “Um, why? You don't think they can lift as much?”

“No, it's not that at all. We just don't need them distracting the workers. An outlander like you wouldn't understand.”

The space pirate could feel eyes moving toward him. He sensed hands moving toward guns. “Look, I don't want any trouble. My ship crashed in this valley a few kilometers from here. Is there any way I could have some repair drones sent out?”

The bartender scoffed. “Impossible.”

“Are there some authorities here I could contact to help me look for my friends?”

The bartender curled his mustache upwards in a nasty smile, revealing his yellow teeth. “Impossible.”

Han brought the glass to his lips and drank deeply, downing its contents with one mighty chug. “Well, I got what I came here for. I'm off.”

“It isn't that easy, spacer.”

Han dimly made out a rumbling sound over all the ambient noise, as if something outside had been blown up. “What was that?”

The bartender shrugged. “Any number of things. Crazy, drunk harbor pilots crash their ships all the time. Every now and then protesters come along and blow up some supply crates. There's a lot of thunderstorms around here, too. But either way, the noise works in our favor.”

“Is that right?”

Yellow teeth again. “Of course. It helps to muffle the screams.”

Han wheeled to find a Rodian and a Gran checking the safeties on their blasters, but Han was quicker on the draw. His BlasTech barked twice, sending both goons tumbling over chairs and tables in boneless heaps.

Another thug rushed with a vibroblade just as the bartender produced a flechette launcher. Han ducked as the bartender fired, his cone of shrapnel and flame sending the thug flying across the cantina smoking and lifeless. Han whirled and loosed a reflex shot, blowing the bartender's weapon in half, and as he reloaded a fresh power pack an Aqualish pounced on Han and knocked the BlasTech out of his hand.

The hideous alien cracked its head against Han's jaw and he felt a tooth break. Han reeled backwards and the Aqualish followed up with a right cross to the nose and a knee to the abdomen. Han staggered back again, the pain driving him into a fury, but the Aqualish was at it again, first knocking Han to his knees and then shattering a bar stool against his back. Han screamed and collapsed, and his assailant leaned in close for a killing stroke only to be knocked down by a scissor kick. Han's arm lashed out, fingers scratching the alien's face, desperately searching for purchase. He grabbed a tuft of the alien's hair with one hand and tugged at the hooflike fist wrapped around his throat with the other. Both of them were yelling now, their screams cut short by blows given and received.

“Shut up!” Han barked. “Surrender!”

Blood flowed over Han's hand and he lost his grip on the Aqualish's hair. The alien's head snapped back against the floor, and in an instant its hooflike fists were pummeling him. Han rocked back and forth, buckling under the crush of blows. The Aqualish connected with Han's jaw again, cracking something. Han's nose came next, and a nauseating miasma of blood and mucous oozed down his throat. Han spat blood between his teeth and screamed with the Aqualish. The two of them sounded like caged Cyborrean battledogs locked in a death match.

They were.

Han's elbow met the Aqualish's face, smashing bone and gristle. Blood splashed on both of them. With few tricks left, both of them went for each other's throats and squeezed. It was a useless gesture: both of them were so exhausted and slick with sweat and blood that they couldn't get a good grip.

At this point it was just a matter of surviving until one of their friends stepped into the fight. There were still plenty of gunmen in the cantina that wouldn't hesitate to blow Han to smithereens, but Han and his opponent kept rolling and changing positions, making it difficult to get a clear shot. Han surmised that the Aqualish was very popular, and no one wanted to risk any harm to him. Or maybe they just liked watching him fight. The Aqualish struck Han as the type that never ran away. The type that won every fight but one—the one where he died.

Another explosive rumble. Louder this time. The door started to cycle open and then blew inward, pancaking some poor Devaronian that stood in its way. A girl stepped inside—was it Leia?—with a downright vengeful look on her face. The bar was silent.

She took a deep breath. “I'm looking for Luke Skywalker.”

“Woman!” the bartender cried. “Grab her! Kill her now!”

A roundhouse kick decked three thugs, and an aggressive Force push sent six more tumbling. She stretched out to the Force and produced a spear of midnight black, piercing the bartender's body and pinning him to a wall.

She walked toward the two fighters, still brawling despite all the commotion, and with a negligent flick of the wrist she launched a fork of lightning that split the Aqualish's head in two.

“Wow,” Han huffed as he caught his breath and used all his strength to push the stinking carcass away from him. “You really should have gotten here five minutes ago. Better late than never, I guess.”

“Captain Solo,” Leia said as she helped him up. “We need to find my brother. We've got a long way to go and not long to get there. And you're gonna help me.”

“What about your father?”

“My brother,” she said pointedly. “Don't get excited, Captain. We've got a job to do.”

Woo! Love your 'fic! The idea of Leia as a Sith always creeped me out more than Luke. She just seems like she'd be more... Evil.

Expanding his sphere of responsibility and using it as a psionic shield, Shyft found himself surrounded by flames as he picked up speed and rocketed down through Byss's atmosphere at a speed that would make even the most seasoned combat pilot nauseous. Even the Force didn't offer complete protection; he winced as the wind and heat whipped at his face and tore free great chunks of flesh while his steadily dwindling midi-chlorians struggled to keep up and repair the damage.

The pain, Shyft reflected, was a fitting punishment for him. He'd gotten careless; he'd been so overconfident in his powers that he allowed Anakin Skywalker to launch him into space without much difficulty. It was a simple trick, a fool's trick, a mad gamble Skywalker had made out of desperation. But it worked—however briefly.

Shyft pushed his mind beyond the pain and chaos that surrounded him, ignored the rapidly approaching ground, and stretched out to the Force, finding that the second Shyft—along with Skywalker—was destroyed in the Malignant's crash landing.

And yet, the boy and his sister still lived. Shyft knew confusion and doubt to plague the girl's thoughts, and he had already taken advantage of her vulnerability by filling her mind with murderous suggestions. The boy, however, could be a problem. The children had to be eliminated, but not before providing Shyft with the ample service that he required.

Moments like these gave Shyft no doubt that the Force had a will of its own. It had moods, textures, colors and desires that sometimes conflicted with one another. After all, there was no question whether the galaxy existed as anything other than Shyft's plaything. But moments like Shyft's embarrassing ejection into space confused him. If he were meant to rule the galaxy as its most wise and powerful member, why was he being given any sort of opposition that he couldn't immediately crush?

Nothing worth having ever came easily, of course. Shyft concluded that he was being tested, or even taught. He never thought he'd admit it, but he was actually scared—maybe even terrified—to think there were forces or intelligences out there greater than himself. Shyft knew he had limits, knew that eventually the last of his midi-chlorians would die and he would perish with them, knew that he was not infallible. He wasn't perfect—

But he was the closest thing to perfection that had ever existed.

Wasn't he?

* * * * *

Wasteland.

That was all Luke Skywalker had seen and smelled and felt for kilometer after kilometer. The ship's impact had caused devastation on par with what an orbital bombardment would cause, reducing everything in a gigantic radius to steaming, molten slag. Smoke, sparks and flakes of white-hot ash would regularly ignite Luke's clothes, causing them to char for a split second. The soles of his boots had melted. After a few minutes he started to smell the stink of burnt hair, too.

He put a hand on his father's belt and lightsaber—all now his own, he supposed—and pulled them a bit higher up on his waist. He hadn't seen a tree, shrub or insect in hours. Couldn't remember the last time he'd eaten, or slept, or drunk any water. He was definitely in bad shape, and this inhospitable environment wasn't helping him much. Luke had little option but to follow that incredibly vague thread of the Force that gave him a general direction in which to keep walking. And walking. And walking.

And walking.

He hadn't sensed his father's presence in the Force since the crash, and lately his mother's presence was conspicuously absent as well. As for Leia...

Her presence was fluctuating, as though her alignment within the Force was in a state of flux. Almost as if she were torn between light and dark. He wasn't quite sure what to make of that, but he figured he'd cross that bridge when he came to it.

He'd walked so far since the crash, and he still had far to go. He didn't really mind, apart from the heat and the noxious fumes; he'd trained himself with the Force to learn the art of breath control. The long walk gave him a chance to clear his head and get his thoughts together, something he hadn't done in quite a while. Just days ago he was still Darth Pejorus, still a ruthless, megalomaniacal cyborg.

Now he was...what was he? He wasn't quite human anymore. This wasn't the body he was born with. It seemed like his body was rejecting the new body parts and organs he had developed, like getting ill after receiving a heart transplant from an incompatible donor. He figured he deserved such a punishment for trying to cheat his own biology.

He doubted he'd ever redeem himself for the terrible things he'd done as a Sith. He wasn't even sure what he wanted. The Jedi life never seemed appropriate for him, never seemed like the proper outlet for his power. But the treacherous way of the Sith wasn't exactly right, either.

And now he had to deal with Leia's transformation into Darth Venera—a metamorphosis that he alone was responsible for. Something that he alone had to deal with. Something that he alone had to try to fix. Where could he turn without his parents' mentorship? And why hadn't he been able to sense Obi-Wan for so long?

Luke wondered what he'd do whenever he found Leia. If he ever found her. He had caused her so much pain—wounded her physically and emotionally—in his efforts to convince her to join a faith that was wrong to begin with. A faith that was never his own. How could he ever make it up to her? How could he disarm her if she tried to kill him?

He couldn't trust himself. That much was certain. And how could he trust the Force, as whimsical as it was? The Force wasn't helping those who needed it most. It was allowing bad things to happen to good people, and vice versa. How could he place any trust, let alone respect, with such a thing?

Perhaps he didn't need it anymore. Perhaps he was never meant to use it. He only hurt people whenever he used the Force, and it allowed everyone he loved to die. Why offer it the dignity of being utilized?

Why even offer it existence? The Force was a liability. It was too full of mistakes and errors that allowed creatures like Shyft to come into being. It was too full of conflicting desires. It issued death to those who deserved life. Luke found himself struck with a sudden bit of inspiration...

The Force itself had to be destroyed.

Then the glowing red ground shook, cracking apart and releasing steam pockets from underneath. The entire wasteland seemed to rumble, and a geyser erupted beneath Luke's feet and sent him flying. He broke his fall with a quick somersault, and as he came back to his feet and regained his senses he saw several shapes emerging from the geyser. Two, then eight, then twenty snarling creatures crawled up from underground. Their lizardlike bodies were covered with spines that stretched onto long, whiplike tails. Their disturbingly large claws dripped with green venom, and their cavernous, fanged maws housed venom-soaked tongues. Borne atop their scaly heads were little red dots that Luke figured must have been eyes.

They might have been the Hssiss creatures he had read about as a boy. Maybe the Malignant's crash had caused a seismic reaction that disturbed their underground lair. Maybe they were drawn to his scent. Maybe they were sent by an assassin. Regardless of what brought these dragons to Luke, he didn't need to use the Force to figure out what they wanted.

His father's lightsaber found his hand, and the first dragon leapt right into his blade. The brilliant emerald beam fanned out in Luke's grasp, carving through every dragon that charged him. He sensed the dark side in these creatures, and found himself feeling something that resembled satisfaction as he cleaved his way through bundle after bundle of scale and flesh and bone. More of them crawled up from underground, and soon Luke found he had hacked through so many that the dragons' bodies created a mound that their fellows had to climb over. He took cover behind his bastion of the dead, impaling and scything through dragon after dragon before tossing his saber into the mouth of what must have been the very last one.

He dropped to his knees, exhausted and out of breath, and soaked in sweat from his exertion and the ambient temperature. The ground started to burn his pants, and just as he stood up, something slammed into his side and knocked him onto his back—and onto the painfully hot ground.

Luke winced under the dragon's stinking hot breath, and found himself paralyzed as its jaws locked around his neck.

Yikes!

I hope Luke will find a way out of this mess, especially now that he has true remorse for his actions.
