Next installment...finally.
PART IV:
THOUGHTS OF A DYING ATHEIST
22
Cassio Tagge surmised that he should have felt sympathy for, and perhaps even identified with, the treacherous young man lying strapped to his table.
He did not feel it.
Tagge was far from his homeworld of Tepasi and the deadly predators the planet was infamous for hosting. He was far from his family and friends, far from his old life, far away from home.
He did not miss it.
The old general had long since retired, and had been pressed back into service at the behest of Conan Antonio Motti. He knew Motti had grown more than a little ruthless as of late, mad with power and frustrated with his own incompetence. Tagge also knew this treacherous young man had earned Motti’s ire, and had been badly wounded, physically and emotionally.
He did not see it.
“Are you alive?” Tagge glanced at the laser scalpel in his hand, then at the young man, then at the laser scalpel again. “Do you feel?”
The youth stirred, but only a little bit. Tagge fired up the laser scalpel, holding it just above the youth’s bare abdomen until the scent of burnt hair tickled his nostrils.
“I asked you a question. I expect an answer, Lord Pejorus.”
“W-Water,” the youth groaned. “I-I can barely sp-speak.”
“Answer me first.”
“Y-Yes. I’m alive.”
Tagge pulled a canteen from his field belt and sprinkled a few water droplets onto the youth’s lips. “Satisfied? I didn’t ask if this battle-damaged husk of flesh lying before me is alive. My handiwork has already pushed your pain threshold to the limits. That much is obvious. I’m not asking if your crude body is alive. I’m asking if Lord Pejorus is alive.”
There was a particular answer Tagge was expecting. A response that would sweep his problems away and wash relief over him in a soothing wave.
He did not hear it.
“He’s gone,” the youth breathed. “A...A monster made out of necessity to fight other monsters. My name’s Luke.”
“Not what I wanted to hear,” Tagge said evenly. He drew the laser scalpel toward Luke’s hand, its little beam just itching to cleave through the new flesh and bone that Luke had miraculously regrown. Closer...closer...
“Cassio!”
Tagge shut off the laser scalpel and set it down on the table beside him. “Yes, Conan?”
Motti stepped inside and took a seat by the door. “I’d like a word.”
“What’s on your mind?”
“What isn’t? Logistical problems, same as always. Trying to find food and ammunition for this ragtag little gang of ours. Trying to give them a little morale, some shred of hope that the Ascendancy is still worth fighting for. Trying to convince them that Potentate Shyft isn’t just as much of a lying turncoat as Lord Pejorus himself.”
Trying to alleviate stress, Tagge found himself sighing and massaging his temples. “Lord Pejorus—young Skywalker here—might be of some use to us. We can do more than just torture him to death for our own amusement like you had planned. We can salvage him.”
“What do you mean?”
“Convince him of our cause. I’m already in the process of doing so. Break him down and rebuild him, just like the Potentate did to him in the first place. The ways of the Sith have great appeal. The dark side will always call to him. Remember what the Potentate taught us. Skywalker may think he has been redeemed, but we will know the truth. The dark side has stained him. He will carry its burden for the rest of his life.”
Luke moved his hand as much as his restraints would allow, reaching for the laser scalpel lying on the adjacent table. Stretching out to the Force, he called the little tool toward his hand—
Something stopped it in midair. The laser scalpel hung in the air, suspended, then spun and flew into Motti’s grip.
A toothy grin spread across Motti’s pasty face. “Pretty weak, Skywalker. You’ve spent too much time away from the Sith. Gotten soft.”
Luke fidgeted in his restraints. “I’m not impressed, Conan. The Sith are a violent, intrusive bunch that obliterate whatever they associate themselves with. They deal in treachery and murder instead of trust and harmony.”
“Trust? Harmony? Simple things. They’re overrated,” Motti sneered. “Pathetic words. Tools of the incompetent, built upon monuments of nothing by poets and soothsayers too weak to face the harshness of reality.”
“Pathetic? You’re the one riding on the cultural tidal wave of stupidity, blindly devoting yourself to a Potentate that’s interested in the well-being of no one but himself. Loyalist?” Luke scoffed. “Fool is more like it.”
“I know all about reality. I am reality. I know exactly who I am. And I know what you are. You’ve stepped out of Potentate Shyft’s shadow. I look at you and see so much potential. Cassio is right. There might be some use for you yet. Shyft has left us with no guidance, you see. We don’t even know where he is. The galaxy is in turmoil. The Rebellion and Ascendancy alike are in complete chaos, unfocused and bereft of leadership. It might be time to reorganize this galaxy yet again. And with your power on our side, we could be extremely political. Nature abhors a vacuum. We could take over. Give the people what they want.”
A rare and exceptional moment of clarity seized Luke and let him regain his senses. Sometimes the most ludicrous solutions were the most successful. “I’ll help you. I’ll put a human face on the situation for all to see. I’ll dissolve the Rebellion that I started. I want peace and order as much as the next person. Whatever it takes. I only have one request.”
Motti regarded him with a calm curiosity. “And that is?”
“Give me Shyft.”

I’m not asking if your crude body is alive. I’m asking if Lord Pejorus is alive.
I'm impressed Luke managed to stay strong despite his pain.
Just give me Shyft
Uh oh. Revenge is not the Jedi way.
Not that Shyft doesn't have it coming.
Great update

Padwan to Big Fatty If someone says, "Have a nice weekend," I never say, "You too." Because I never know if, perhaps, by the time the weekend rolls around, I will have other plans for that person. Come Friday, I may wish to have them slain. - George Carli

Well things are going to get very interesting. Yes revenge is not the Jedi way but whoever said Luke was back to being a Jedi, we do know he has given up the ways of the Sith.

Next installment.
23
“They must live underground,” Leia surmised as she studied the litter of dismembered dragons and the steaming geysers from which the creatures had emerged. “People came from down there, too. They went back beneath the surface already. My brother was with them.”
Han looked at her sideways. “And how do you know all that? You sensed his presence?”
“Something like that.”
“Why would people want to live underground, anyway?” Han winced. “No sun. No view. No freedom.”
“I’d say it gives them complete freedom, actually. Out of sight, out of mind,” said Leia. “Who knows who these people are or what they’re doing down there? Maybe they’re up to no good. Maybe they’ve been building an army in secret. Maybe they’re just keeping to themselves. We can’t know for sure. But I know they have Luke with them.”
“So what’s the plan? Looks like these tunnels are the only way inside. And we have no idea what kind of reception is waiting for us once we get down there. Perfect place for an ambush.”
“Well, I figured you could go in first. You’re the man, after all.”
Shooting her a nasty look, Han rolled his eyes and sighed. “So I’m expendable, is that it?”
“You were a hired pilot, and a hired smuggler,” Leia said matter-of-factly. “Now you’re a hired gun. Do your job.”
Han’s blaster trembled eagerly in its holster and his hand wrapped around it, studying every contour, bump and knob that he knew so well. “I know how to shoot, and you’re pretty handy with those hokey powers of yours. But one blaster and one lightsaber might not be a match for whatever we find down there. And for all we know, they could be on our side. I doubt they’d respond too kindly if we rushed in with guns blazing.”
“But my brother is with them, so we’ll be going into combat regardless. And if they’re protecting him, then they’ll have to be eliminated as well.”
Unable to think of a better course of action, Han found himself going along with what Leia was saying. But doubt lingered on the corners of his mind. “You ready? Are you sure you want to do this?”
“No,” she said quietly. “But it has to be done.”
With nothing left to lose, Han pushed through the onrushing steam and stepped into the dark labyrinth below.
* * * * *
“We have intruders,” Motti said as he scanned a datapad. “Two of them. A man and a woman. Probably Rebel sympathizers coming to rescue you.”
Luke set down a datapad of his own. “It’s my sister. She’s come here to kill me.”
“Then we need to get you out of here.”
“No. I'll deal with her myself. I’m sure there’s a way to settle this quickly and painlessly.”
“I agree,” Cassio Tagge said, butting in to the conversation. “With your permission, gentlemen, I think I can resolve this situation myself.”
* * * * *
His spot luma’s battery had run dry, and Han was forced to navigate through the dark, interconnected cave tunnels simply by feel, intuition and the occasional guidance from Leia. So far he had encountered no one, and began to fear he was going in circles.
Han chuckled. “I think I know why you wanted me to go in first. You just like looking at my behind. You can’t bear to let a gorgeous guy like me out of your sight.”
Leia scoffed. “Why, you stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf—”
A cannon bolt ripped into the tunnel wall, chewing through meter after meter of rock and sending debris flying.
Han barked, “Get down!” but Leia was already on the move. Left on his own, he dropped to his belly and nervously jerked his BlasTech’s trigger, launching an angry red hyphen into the darkness without any result that he could gauge.
Regular blaster fire erupted then, a chaotic lattice of lethal energy sizzling above Han’s head and blowing apart chunks of rock. Han aimed for the muzzle flashes, his BlasTech barking and smoking, and he was rewarded with the sound of bodies falling and the slow but steady reduction of clumsy blaster exchanges. After a minute or two, the cave fell silent.
Han stood. “Leia? Where’d you go?”
Light flooded through the tunnel, and the cave opened up into a spacious chamber that looked not unlike a lobby in an ordinary office building. Lining the perimeter of the chamber and standing on catwalks up above were dozens and dozens of ragged-looking soldiers with big blasters. Their uniforms and haircuts were shabby but their demeanor was gruff, and they looked like they knew how to use their weapons.
An old man wearing general’s colors and a nametag that read “Tagge” stepped forward, blaster in hand. “Captain Solo. We don’t get too many smugglers down here.”
“And I don’t know too many generals that make a living hiding underground.”
General Tagge snarled, “Drop the blaster. Give us some information, and maybe we’ll let you go. Tell me why you’re here.”
“I’m not giving you anything,” Han said. “I take orders from just one person: me.”
Tagge pointed his blaster at Han’s face. “You sure about that?”
“Yeah. I’m sure. You might as well just shoot me.”
“Okay,” Tagge said, and pulled the trigger.
