LUKE! grin dancing

Each of Shyft’s scaly hands produced a blade the color of blood. “Weak words coming from a weak human afraid of the death I’ll give to him. We’ll do this the old-fashioned way. We both saw this coming. Let’s finish what we started so long ago, Lord Pejorus.”

“You keep calling me that. You really shouldn’t.”

“Why not?” Shyft growled. “Dead man though you may be, it’s still your name.”

“Actually,” he said, “it’s Luke.”

I'm glad, if a bit cautious, to see him back!!

And hooray for Shyft meeting a gruesome end...at least I'm assuming Luke is going to kill him...

Is there a PM list for the story? If so, can I be on it? I miss updates and forget story titles all the time.

PART III:
THE WAY OF THE FUTURE

14

“He--he’s really gone. I can’t believe he’s gone.”

“You said that already,” Anakin spat. “You swung that saber, and Obi-Wan chose to stand in front of it. If it weren’t him lying there, it would be me instead.”

Darth Venera thumbed off her lightsaber and chucked the hilt at Anakin’s feet. “I was wrong to leave Naboo. I should have stayed at home and kept up with my training. Oh, well. I guess I finally learned my lesson.”

Anakin scoffed. “Oh, I see how it is. That’s a pretty damn expensive lesson. My best friend--probably the only person to ever get me, other than your mother--had to die before you realized how wrong you were? I don’t know how many times I told you to trust us and to keep up with your training. As the saying goes, Father knows best.”

The tears brought color back to her pale cheeks. “It was Luke. He...he manipulated me. He’s always brooding, always scheming. He can’t be trusted.”

“And he was manipulated by Shyft. Had to be. Of the two kids I have left, Luke isn’t the one who murdered a great Jedi and war hero. So I don’t think I’m gonna give much weight to what you call your honesty anymore.”

“Don’t you get it?” she snapped. “He made me like this!”

“No, you made yourself like this! The greatest trickster, the most convincing con artist you’ll ever encounter can only get you started down the dark path. Only you can choose to keep walking down it.”

“Look, don’t lecture me. You have to forgive me.”

“Forgive you? I ought to shove this lightsaber right up your kriffing rear!”

She sighed. “I said I was sorry. What more do you want?”

Anakin looked at her harshly, thinking long and hard upon the question. “I want Obi-Wan to be alive. I want a decent meal, and a real bed to sleep in. I want people to stop falling to the dark side. I want to stop losing the people I love. I want a normal life. I want the sun to shine. But now, more than anything, I want my son and daughter back.”

“Well, your daughter’s here right now, and she’s ready to denounce the dark side. I’m Leia again, okay? I’m sure you’re planning to confront Pejorus, since you think some of Luke is left in him. You think there’s still good in him. Well, there’s not. He’s going to put up one hell of a fight, and you’ll need my help.”

“I work alone now. I’ve always been alone. I didn’t need your help last time, and you stupidly came to ‘rescue’ me. Look how that turned up. You were the one in need of rescuing. It’s no different this time around. You’ll just slow me down.”

“But I know I want to be a Skywalker again. Please take me back.”

“I don’t think you’ve thought enough about what you’ve done. I think you should sleep on it.” He raised his hand slightly, and Leia fainted.

He brought up his comlink. “Captain Solo? I need you to bring the Falcon down here. Found a lost young woman who needs to be picked up. Meanwhile, I’m gonna take her ship up to the Malignant and finish this thing once and for all.”

“Great,” Han’s garbled voice said through the comlink. “I’ll be down there in a hot second. Did everything go like you planned?”

“No,” Anakin said quietly. “Not exactly.”

* * * * *

Sweating, swearing, shouting, slashing, struggling, the gods had their battle.

Shyft was impossibly fast, impossibly strong, impossibly crafty and devious. He was an advocate of the feint, a fan of the sucker-punch. He had no reservations about fighting unfairly, and wielded a saber in each clawed hand with consummate grace. During the Clone Wars, a Jedi might hope to learn a handful of lightsaber combat techniques and choose one particular style as his or her area of expertise. Some styles specialized in calmness and defense, some specialized in offense and power, some specialized in classical dueling, and some were versatile enough to be used in any situation.

The Potentate was using a style all his own, but there was no doubt that it incorporated all the combined strengths of every single known lightsaber style, and none of their weaknesses. His strikes were fast, amazingly fast but not quick enough to be parried easily; his strikes were strong, amazingly powerful and deliberate but not so wide and leisurely that they would leave him open to a riposte. He used elements of Ataru, with its dizzying jumps and flips and acrobatics. He used elements of Soresu, with its utterly impregnable defense. He used elements of Djem So, his every step a blow and every blow a step. He used elements of Vaapad, channeling the darkness within himself to fuel his attacks. And at every opportunity, he used the power of the dark side.

He didn’t just use the Force to fling heavy objects and hurl bolts of lightning, though these exchanges were made in abundance. He did something far more devastating. He spoke, using every opportunity to demoralize his opponent. Words could be deadlier than swords, and Shyft knew it.

Darth Pejorus--now Luke Skywalker--held his own against this terrible creature. The warriors were evenly matched, not because they were both so powerful but because they were so drastically different. Shyft had spent his entire life knowing who he was and being dissatisfied, a self-loathing creature that vented its frustration by attacking others. Luke, for the first time in his life, had learned who he was. And he liked what he had found.

Luke had found that he was strong, stronger than he ever thought he could be. He always thought he had inherited the worst of his parents’ traits: his mother’s insistence on diplomacy and misdirection over confrontation, his father’s defiance and delicate ego and dangerously fierce loyalty to others. What had once been his greatest weaknesses were now the source of his greatest strength. In casting off the shackles of the dark side, finding his identity and learning the kind of man he really was, Luke found that life was a precious gift to be cherished. Celebrated. Fought for.

“You can’t win,” Shyft snarled. “You can’t defeat me. I have always been here, and I will always be here. I am the beginning and the end.”

Luke circled his lightsaber in front of himself, always keeping his defenses tight, never giving Shyft an opening to use that second saber of his. “Say that a hundred times, and I’ll strike you down a hundred times. You want to destroy life, and I want to preserve it. We’ll fight as long as there’s a galaxy to contest.”

“We will fight,” Shyft barked, “and you will die. You are only one man, one boy...and I am forever.”

“You’re an abomination!” Luke cried as molten blades flared and sparks flew in superheated showers of energy and light. “The Force doesn’t condone your actions or your very existence. You shouldn’t even be alive!”

The youth ducked beneath a neck-high sweep, then leapt above a slash from Shyft’s second saber that would have scissored through Luke’s knees. One blade against two was hardly fair, and Shyft used his two sabers in tandem perfectly, contorting and spinning and flipping and whipping his lizardlike body in a numinous whirlwind of death. The crimson fans of plasma were like buzzsaws attached to an angry, gyrating torpedo complete with kicking feet, biting teeth and a mind laden with countless intentions, all of them murderous.

Luke had plenty of reason to hate Shyft, plenty of ammunition to fuel his desire to keep fighting. Shyft had ruined Luke’s life in every way it was possible for a life to be ruined: he had destroyed entire worlds and slaughtered innocent people beyond count, and forced Luke to do the same, but far worse was the emotional damage that had been done. He oppressed Luke, had brainwashed him, had seduced Luke to the dark side and, in doing so, transformed his parents into unrecognizable, obsessive zealots that Luke thought had forgotten how to love. And then there was Leia--the poor girl was well on her way down the dark path, and as stubborn as she was, she wouldn’t be stopping anytime soon. Luke hated Shyft in every way it was possible to hate someone. He wanted this creature dead, and while a Jedi wasn’t supposed to kill or seek revenge, Shyft wasn’t even supposed to exist. Like Anakin Skywalker, Shyft was a creature that had come from out of nowhere, and Luke doubted that Shyft, much like Anakin, had any real purpose. Both of them were probably accidents. But then, without Anakin, Luke would not exist. Yet, despite all this, one thing was inescapably clear:

Luke wouldn’t win this fight by going toe-to-toe with his enemy.

Eventually Shyft’s twin blades found their mark, battering away Luke’s defenses. Shyft grinned while great amounts of black oil flowed from his fangs, and in the most vicious manner he could muster, he plunged both blades into the human’s heart. He twisted the glowing sabers, bringing them along a curving path that should have liquefied and boiled all of Luke’s innards. But the boy produced no response whatsoever, and as Shyft tried to open Luke’s body, his hands passed right through him. It was as though he was trying to kill a ghost, or a hologram, or--

A Force-projected image of oneself.

Shyft, as ferocious and unstoppable and godlike as he was, started to panic. He spun himself about, looking with his eyes in one direction and reaching out with the Force in the other, but all he could find was this bizarre apparition. Had Shyft already won? Had he already defeated the boy, and now had his Force spirit to contend with? He began lowering his guard, and that was all it took.

High above, Luke launched himself out from the rafters that had hidden him. He spun as he fell, bringing his body and blade through a lightning-quick arc that should land right on top of Shyft and pierce his brain.

Luke plummeted, building up momentum, and allowed himself to smile as he realized he had finally found the way to defeat Shyft once and for all. He wouldn’t be able to change direction before he landed, but he wouldn’t need to because he wouldn’t miss. Not this time. He couldn’t.

Without visibly moving, Shyft somehow managed to turn himself around and look up, and suddenly Luke was rocketing toward something other than the juiciest target in the galaxy.

He was going to fall on a pair of molten blades.

Leia should have known better than to think "Im sorry was going to make up for all she has done, especially killing Obi-Wan.

On the other hand, all Anakin had to do was use the Force to tell whether she was sincere or not.

I hope if she was, she can be reconcilled to Anakin and Padme again

He was going to fall on a pair of molten blades

Now that was just plain evil.

I hope Luke will make it out of this

great update
