Title: The Halcyon Maneuver
Timeframe: AOTC AU
Characters: Nejaa Halcyon, Valin Halcyon, Nyche, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padme
Summary: After the Jedi Council requests help from the Corellian Jedi in the rising conflict, Nejaa Halcyon, his son, and a young Jedi apprentice end up protecting Senator Padme Amidala -- and doing a lot more than that. The Chosen One is trying to keep up with them as they're trying to keep up with him, and Obi-Wan is in one fine mess as the galaxy heads toward war.
Notes: This is my first full-length story in Saga. Some of the material may come from R. A. Salvatore's Attack of the Clones novelization. While the story is an AU because of the Halcyons, much of it, especally in the beginning, will follow AOTC.

The Halcyon Maneuver

Anakin Skywalker was wet.

He wasn’t happy about being wet. Sure, he was in the Room of a Thousand Gardens, which featured several pools of water that Jedi padawans often swam in. And yes, said padawans could often be messy and loud and splash water everywhere. It wasn’t such a smart idea for a meditating padawan to sit too close.

But still. There were only two teenagers in the pools; the rest, Anakin supposed, were off in classes or doing something that didn’t involve annoying him half to death. And two padawans usually didn’t splash quite so much water everywhere. It usually took a whole group to do that.

But no. These two managed to do it all on their own.

That was why Anakin was wet. He didn’t have time to change into something dryer before the scheduled meeting with the Jedi Council, so he had to appear before them soaking wet. He winced at the thought of what his master would say. Obi-Wan probably wouldn’t be pleased to see his padawan dripping water all over the floor, much less looking so unprofessional in front of the collective head of the Jedi Order.

There was nothing he could do, though, so Anakin just trudged up to the council chamber, which was situated in a tower at the highest point of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. He palmed the door open and was surprised to see an unfamiliar man standing in the room next to his master.

As he had predicted, Obi-Wan was less than pleased. “Anakin,” he sighed, seeming unsure of what else to say.

The other man laughed. “He’s just a boy, Kenobi; let him have his fun.”

Anakin bristled at the thought of being “just of boy” in this man’s eyes—or anyone’s, for that matter. He was about to protest, but decided that, given the look on Obi-Wan’s face, it would be best to remain silent.

“Now we have one errant padawan,” Mace Windu, one of the masters on the council, commented. “Now we’re just waiting for yours, Halcyon.”

Halcyon laughed. “Might as well not wait. They may or may not show up. I can always fill them in later.”

Anakin moved over to stand beside his master. The council chamber was a circle, with twelve chairs, one for each master, situated along the edges more than halfway around the room. The Jedi who came before the council stood in the center of the room, directly in front of Mace Windu and Yoda, the two most senior masters in the Order.

Anakin took a moment to study Halcyon. He was taller than average, but not by much. He had fair skin and light brown hair, and from his accent, Anakin guessed that he was from Corellia. He was surprised to see a Corellian Jedi on Coruscant. He had heard stories about them. They answered to the Jedi Council, but only when they felt like it. They trained and stayed mostly in their own system, only venturing out in extreme cases. Anakin had even heard that they lived mostly normal lives; they had jobs, families, children. It was a strange concept to him, but one he thought the Jedi Order wouldn’t lack for adopting. Children shouldn’t be torn away from their families and sentenced to a lonely, loveless, duty-filled life.

Before Mace Windu could speak, the door to the chamber was open and two teenagers tumbled in—the same ones, Anakin was surprised to note, who had gotten him wet.

They didn’t look much better than him. The girl had wet hair and fairly dry clothes, but she was holding a bundle of clothes in her arms. Anakin thought it was strange until he saw that the boy was shivering in a puddle, with wet swimshorts and a necklace on, and nothing else.

The Jedi Masters seemed stunned, but Halcyon didn’t appear to be overly surprised. “I’m pretty sure I don’t want to know.”

“She took my clothes!” the boy protested. Anakin studied him more carefully as he spoke. He bore a big resemblance to the older man.

“He had it coming,” she replied, giving the boy a dirty look.

“Well, now that you’re both here, I think that the masters would like to start,” Halcyon said, ignoring the brewing fight. He turned back around and bowed slightly to the council members. “I apologize for the disruption. It won’t happen again.”

“Very well then.” Windu steepled his fingers. “You are all aware, I assume, that Senator Amidala from Naboo landed on Coruscant a few hours ago?”

Anakin wasn’t aware of that, but Obi-Wan and Halcyon were nodding. Padme’s here? Why didn’t she tell me? Why didn’t Obi-Wan tell me. I know it’s been ten years since I’ve seen or spoken to her, but I thought . . . I thought that she at least considered me a friend.

“Her ship was blown up,” Master Windu continued, “and her decoy and several guards killed. “The theory that’s being put forth is that it was the work of disgruntled spice miners from the moons of Naboo.

“That doesn’t seem right,” Anakin protested. “Coruscant is far away from Naboo.”

“And disgruntled miners would be more likely to go after Queen Jamilla than Senator Amidala,” Obi-Wan added.

“I said theory,” Windu reminded. “We are assuming it was an attempt to stop her from making it to the Senate. Someone doesn’t want her to vote against the Military Creation Act that’s currently up for debate in the Senate.”

“But that’s your assumption,” Halcyon said, paying very careful attention to which words Windu put emphasis on. “It’s not officially recognized.”

“And it will remain that way for now,” Windu said.

“No matter the cause, need protection, Senator Amidala does,” said Yoda. The little green Jedi Master was over eight hundred and fifty years old, and still going strong.

“And we’re to provide it?” Obi-Wan asked.

“Yes, you and Master Halcyon and your charges,” Windu said. “You are to report over to the Senate complex, where the Nubian consulate is located. Protect the Senator at all costs.”

“Surely this is an unusual assignment,” Halcyon said. “Especially since you’re assigning so many of us to it.”

“We are doing this as a favor to Chancellor Palpatine,” Windu replied. “He requested two Jedi. We’re sending two Jedi—and their apprentices.”

Halcyon nodded. “Very well. Is there anything else?”

“No. May the Force be with you,” Windu said, dismissing them.

The group trooped out into the hallway, where Obi-Wan and Halcyon stopped and shook hands. “It’s been a long time,” Halcyon said. “The last time I saw you, you were an apprentice.”

“And your boy barely out of diapers,” Obi-Wan replied, returning the Corellian Jedi’s smile.

“He’s grown quite a bit,” Halcyon acknowledged. His mood turned serious. “I was sorry to hear about Qui-Gon. He was a good man.”

Anakin never stopped being amazed that, ten years after the death of Obi-Wan’s master, Qui-Gon Jinn, people all over the galaxy were still giving their condolences. “Qui-Gon made friends with people all over the galaxy,” Obi-Wan had once said. It seemed that this man was one of him.

“Thank you,” Obi-Wan said. He gestured to Anakin. “This is my padawan, Anakin Skywalker.”

Halcyon stuck out his hand, and Anakin shook it. “Nejaa Halcyon. It’s a pleasure you meet you, Anakin.”

“Same here.”

Nejaa gestured at the two teenagers who were, surprising, standing patiently next to him. “My son, Valin, and Nyche Teradin, who is traveling with us. Val, Nych, meet Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker.

The two Jedi shook hands with the teenagers, though Anakin found, to his dismay, that the boy Valin was still wet.

“We’ve met before?” Valin asked Obi-Wan.

“A long time ago,” he replied with a smile.

“Know that we all know each other, I think it’s time to see to our new mission,” Nejaa said.

“Dad, can I get some clothes first?”

Excellent start! Even through their brief dialogue exchanges, you've captured the banter and mannerisms of the characters pretty well. I also like how you took lines from AOTC (like the bit about the disgruntled spice miners) and added more elaboration to 'em. Keep it coming. happy

Good observation here. Qui-Gon definitely left an impressive legacy behind him, even though he had no children of his own.

Ah, the Halcyons! How I love that family.

Interesting premise we have here with Windu sending the two Jedi Knights and their apprentices instead of just Anakin and Obi-Wan like Palpatine suggested.

Good, funny dialogue when it came to Valin, Nyche and Anakin.

Yay, Nejaa! The events of AOTC'll be interesting with him around. Poor, poor wet Anakin. I love the sniping between Valin and Nyche; very amusing. Can't wait to see where this story goes. happy

A/N: Some of this dialogue was taken directly from R. A. Salvatore's AOTC novelization. That part isn't mine (the rest is, though).

And for those of you who are curious, Jonathan is mine, and I made up Nyche's last name.

~~~
Valin sighed as he let the hot water of the sanistream flow over him. It felt good after all the time he had spent wet and shivering in the council chamber. Why did she have to take my clothes?
It had just been a harmless little prank. He had Nyche had gone for a walk in the Room of the Thousand Gardens to kill time before the appointment with the council, and had decided to take advantage of the pool and go swimming. They had managed to get everyone nearby – that apprentice Anakin included – wet as they splashed each other.
After they realized that they were late, they had gotten out of the pool to get dressed, and Valin decided to create an illusion of the crystal snake in Nyche’s clothes. Nyche had screamed so loud Valin had had to cover his ears, but when his laughter gave him away, she had gotten so furious that, after scrambling into her clothes, she had stolen his. He’s chased her through the temple, but she had used telekinesis to stop his from getting to her until they had reached the council chamber.
Valin turned off the sanistream and dried himself with a towel before quickly shrugging into clothes. He had just finished pulling a black tunic on when his father knocked and, without waiting, opened the refresher door.
Nejaa Halcyon smiled. “Nyche told me what happened,” he said, handing Valin his boots.
“I thought it would be funny,” he protested, pulling them on. “I didn’t think she’d get so mad, and I really didn’t think that would happen.” He wrinkled his nose. “We made a really bad impression on the council, didn’t we?”
Nejaa nodded. “Oh, there’s no doubt about it. It was a stupid thing to do, and you did make a bad impression.” He smiled again, lessening the harshness of his words. “But it’s the impression you make on me that counts, and I think that you’re perfectly normal for a sixteen-year-old boy, and I wouldn’t have you any other way. The Jedi Order has a habit of stifling individuality and emotions to the point where the Jedi can become little more than drones. I don’t want that for my son.”
Valin smiled in thanks. “How is Nyche doing?”
“She’s calmed down. I think you had better apologize, though.”
“I have. Several times. How will doing it again make a difference?”
Nejaa put a hand on Valin’s shoulder as they exited the ‘fresher. “Son, she’s a woman. There’s no explaining the way their minds work.”
***
Nyche was waiting for the Halcyon men to appear. When they did, Nejaa gave Valin a wink and a pat on the shoulder and strode ahead of the two teenagers, leading them to their meeting with Senator Amidala and the other two Jedi.
After several moments of awkward silence, Valin said, “I’m sorry I scared you. It was supposed to be a joke, honestly. I’m sorry.”
“I’m sorry too,” she replied. “Stealing your clothes was immature and I shouldn’t have done it here. I made a spectacle of myself, running through the temple, and made a bad impression on the council.”
“We both did,” Valin agreed. “Are we okay now?”
Nyche smiled. “We’re okay.”
Valin put an arm around her shoulders and she slid hers around his waist. They drew stares from passersby, Jedi and non-Jedi alike, but neither cared.
“So, what do you think of this mission?” Valin asked.
***
Anakin took a deep breath and let it out slowly. He was going to see Padme again, after ten long years.
He had a hard time wrapping his mind around it. He hadn’t seen or heard from the one-time queen since he and Obi-Wan had departed Naboo after the victory parade that had established peace between the Nubians and the water-dwelling Gungans.
He had thought of her, though, many times over the years. How could he not? She was brave and beautiful, and the thought of her set his heart on fire. The first time he had seen her, ten years ago when she walked into Watto’s dusty shop on Tatooine, he had gotten a feeling so strong that he had blurted out “I’m going to marry you.”
Now he thought that it was a silly, childish reaction. She had been the first beautiful thing that he’d seen after ten years of dirty slavery. It was natural that he should feel that way, that he should ask if she was an angel . . .
“You seem a little on edge, Anakin,” Obi-Wan said, breaking into his thoughts.
Anakin stared straight ahead and tried his best to keep from blushing or showing any other embarrassing emotion that would betray his thoughts. “Not at all.”
Obi-Wan didn’t look convinced. “I haven’t seen you this nervous since we fell into that nest of gundarks.”
“You fell into that nightmare, Master, and I rescued you, remember?” Anakin gave a small smile at the memory. “Besides, I wasn’t nervous. I was doing fine. You, on the other hand . . .” Obi-Wan just laughed.
Anakin’s mood quickly turned somber again. “I’m surprised that the council assigned us to work with Halcyon.”
Obi-Wan shrugged. “I’m sure they have a good reason for it. And Nejaa Halcyon is a trustworthy man, and good in a fight. He’s a fairly high-ranking member of Corellian Security, which is a pretty prestigious organizations; it’s one of the best police departments in the galaxy. There are few others I’d rather have watching my back.”
“I’m not questioning his worth, Master,” Anakin replied, “just wondering why the council thought we needed help.”
“A matter of pride, is it?”
Anakin shrugged. “I’ll admit that I’m a little affronted that the council doesn’t think that we can handle this on our own . . . and curious as to why, of all the Jedi in the galaxy, the council pulled in a Corellian.”
Now it was Obi-Wan’s turn to shrug. “You’d have to ask them that.”
Anakin sighed. “Master, you’re holding back information. Tell me.”
Obi-Wan shrugged again. “Why is Halcyon here? I honestly don’t know. Why are the Corellians involved . . . the galaxy is quite possibly headed toward war, Anakin. The Separatists are on the move, and the council is getting nervous. The attack on the senator doesn’t help matters. The Corellian Jedi don’t usually get involved in matters outside of their system, but it’s not unheard of. With all of the Jedi spread out so thin, the council called for backup.”
“Did they have to call each Jedi individually?”
Obi-Wan shook his head. “The Corellian Jedi have their own leader. There are quite a few of them, actually. I don’t know the exact count, though, and I daresay that only they do. They’re spread out over the five planets in the system, and some of them aren’t even full Jedi, they just have some amount of training. I’m not exactly sure. Anyway, Jonathan Saeran leads them. I met him once; he seems to be a good man.”
Anakin would have probed his master for more information about when he had met these Corellians, but the lift doors opened before he could. A story for another time, then, Anakin thought.
They exited into the corridor and Anakin’s nervousness about seeing Padme again came rushing back. He gulped in apprehension as Obi-Wan rang the bell.
“You’re sweating,” Obi-Wan noted. “Take a deep breath. Relax.”
“I haven’t seen her in ten years.”
”Anakin, relax,” Obi-Wan reiterated. “She’s not the queen anymore.”
That’s not why I’m nervous, Anakin thought.
A security man opened the door, and the two Jedi stepped across the threshold.
That's certainly true enough!
