A Happy New Year, darth_treyvah! I've been taking a break from the boards for a while due to Christmas and the New Year; so need to comment on two updates, both very interesting. thinking applause

I liked the description of Depa Billaba:

The Chalactan Jedi Master looked wan and pale. The scar on her forehead, where her Mark used to be stared at them all like a blind cataract. It made Obi-Wan uncomfortable, just as it made him cautious and sad. Mace Windu held his former apprentice's arm, guiding her carefully. His usually stoic face was softened by concern for Depa, and of what he knew would follow. Padme didn't know what to make of the woman. She had seen her before in the HoloNet, and from the occasional time she sought an audience with the Jedi High Council, but apart from that and what she was told of the woman she knew very little.

Depa was not dressed in the robes of a Jedi, but rather simple white ones -- almost matching the hue of her very ashen skin. She looked almost quite a match for Anakin, who still lay dying in his stasis pod but apart from the exhaustion etched on her face, there was a determination in her eyes. They were haunted, sad eyes but they were very focussed.

A nice introduction to the character, added to by her own description of the Chalactan Adepts:

"Yes. All adepts eventually go into that great unconsciousness, no matter what creed they follow. There are things in there, and they are hard to communicate. When I ... broke my Greater Mark of Illumination, the Darkness came with its shapes, near-formless things that overwhelmed me. But there were things in there ... words ... symbols that I became aware of ..." She shook her head.

She holds out the possibility of helping Anakin, but with a big risk attached:

"No, Mace. I'm all right. Some Adepts when they go into the unconscious, when they seek enlightenment, go into a trance. There is an old Chalactan ritual, using words and symbols from dreams and the unconscious. If used properly, and harnessed with the Force, an adept can brought out."

"... can be?" Obi-Wan raised one eyebrow.

"There is one danger."

"Depa, if Anakin continues to remain like this, he will die," Obi-Wan told her, squeezing Padme's hand, "please tell us now."

"When an adept goes into the trance, a Master or someone versed in such visions can break it and bring them back. But there is a reason why that adept is in that trance. Some adepts spend their whole lives in there. Some only a day. Others ..." she looked mournfully at Anakin for a few moments, and her face became thoughtful, "You said that he was emotionally traumatized by what happened. My ... my concern is that if I interrupt his meditation, this communion, I could do irreparable damage to his mind. When I was in the Dark, I had to find the words. They were the only light. If someone had tried to wake me up before them, the other words, the shapeless ones could have taken over and ... trust me, there are far worse things than death."

"But came back you did, for a reason."

"Yes. I believe I have to try, Master."

While everyone, particularly Padme, agree to her trying, there are still lots of worries about the attempt:

Obi-Wan and Mace Windu walked out of the Healer's Ward.

"Mace, she's so weak. She barely stand. I don't know ..."

"That is not all you're worried about, is it old friend?"

"No ..."

"You're wondering if Depa still has that darkness inside of her," before Obi-Wan could respond, the Korun Jedi Master continued, "The answer is yes. Yes she does."

Obi-Wan rubbed his forehead, "Then can we actually risk it? What if Anakin is not the only one consumed by the Dark by this?"

Mace Windu put a hand on the other Jedi Master's shoulder, "As you already know, we will have to deal with that when the time comes. Look, I don't know why Depa woke up. I am just as skeptical as you are."

"What if ..." Obi-Wan felt bad for even thinking this, "What if she is the one that tips him over. I know, Mace. I'm sorry, but Master Billaba has already fallen before and ..."

"Obi-Wan, you trust Anakin."

"Yes. With my life."

"And I trust Depa. I also trust her force of will. Her body may not look it, but she has a whole new fortitude. She has always fought the Dark. But more than a warrior, she has always been a spiritual healer. If anyone can help Anakin, it would be Depa."

Obi-Wan nodded, "I hope she can do this."

Let's hope he's right! worried worried

AND IT WORKS! ANI'S BACK! Well done Depa!

Gradually, background noise died down, and angles sharpened. He squinted. He felt something on his chest. Something warm and substantial, but not heavy. Just right. And the smell was a good smell. It -- she felt very familiar, as though she'd always been there. He opened his eyes and saw his wife. She wrapped her arms around him possessively. She was shaking, and he could something warm and wet seeping through his tunic to his breastbone.

His arms felt so weak, as though he'd never used them in his life. They encircled Padme, and he held her. She looked up into his face. Her face was a mess, flushed and tear-stained. She looked like she hadn't had a good night's sleep in days. Her emotions were wild, and beyond happy. Then he sensed ... the other Force signatures. His children. He opened his mouth once and closed it. They weren't even born yet. They were close, but they were -- they were greeting him. One hand stroked Padme's face. She took that hand and cupped it against her cheek. He could feel the warmth of her tears.

Padme's reaction was typical for a worried and loving spouse:

"Anakin," Padme's face reddened and her hands went to the sides of Anakin's face, "Don't. You. Ever. Ever. Do. That. Again," she glared, "Ever."

For a few moments, the other Jedi in the room wondered if it was a good idea to keep the former Knight's wife in the room -- the mixture of very strong, and almost volatile emotions emanating from her, plus the firm grip on her husband's face, and the glare there were not good indicators as to his continued health considering what he'd been through. But Obi-Wan knew, actually fighting back his own emotions at seeing Apprentice conscious, that at this moment it would take a droideka to pry the two of them apart.

"I have been pregnant for a very long time. I've been waiting for you through this entire War, and your damned Jedi Code. I needed you here, dammit! I have seriously run out of patience with you, Anakin Skywalker!"

Good one, Padme! laugh laugh I had another good laugh at this bit:

Yoda shook his head, and went to move away -- to give the Skywalkers a little more privacy. Obi-Wan wanted to stay, to say something to Anakin. But he knew the two of them needed to be alone. Besides, he mused to himself, he was sure it wasn't every day that Padme had her husband at her mercy. Although when he thought about it ... he decided to stop thinking about it.

laugh

A great couple of updates! applause You certainly caught all of the emotions expressed in that situation,darth_treyvah! silly

Loved that Padme wasn't willing to let the others near them and that she told them in no uncertain terms just how much she loved Anakin with that 'Mrs. Skywalker' statement.

Great job. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.
