Prologue
It was all a blur.
Anakin…
She couldn’t see.
Anakin…
She vaguely heard a baby’s cry in the background, but nothing seemed to make sense.
Where are you, Anakin?
Voices. She heard voices talking among the cries. She couldn’t make out what they were saying; it was muddled whispers.
What’s going on? What’s happened?
She heard a voice distantly calling her name…
Padmé… Padmé… PADMÉ!!
“Padmé!”
Her eyes shot open, and she stared at the bright ceiling for a second before closing her eyes. She groaned, opened her eyes slowly, and saw Obi-Wan standing over her, a distressed look upon his battle-worn face.
“Thank the Force,” he sighed, “we thought you were gone.”
Padmé blinked. “Gone?” she murmured, confused.
He nodded, his face looking older and more tired than she had ever seen; his tunic, usually perfectly clean and pressed, was wrinkled, covered in ash and dust, and charred, holes showing through in various parts. “Yes, you almost died.”
“Died?” She faintly wondered why she kept repeating him.
“Yes, Padmé. We almost lost you.”
Tears began to well up in Padmé’s eyes as all the events came raining down on her. “I couldn’t…” she hoarsely whispered, “I couldn’t abandon my children. I have to stay strong for them, Obi-Wan. I can’t leave them. They need me.”
The older Jedi smiled faintly. “Only a true mother would say something like that,” he quietly replied. “You’re a brave woman, Padmé. You’ve never given up when we have, more times than I can count.”
She weakly smiled in return. “Thank you for being with me, Obi-Wan,” she continued. “You’re a good friend.”
At that, Obi-Wan’s face slid from relieved to dismayed, and he fixed her with a remorseful gaze before slowly walking out of the room.
Padmé watched him leave, wondering what had made him so guilty. What exactly had happened between him and Anakin?
Thinking of her husband caused her to shudder. She didn’t even know him anymore. Was he dead? Mortally injured?
A small, troubling voice worried her more than the others.
With his new master?
Bail Organa’s arrival brought her out of her musings. “Thank goodness you’re alright, Padmé,” he said kindly, “how are you feeling?”
“Better than I was, thank you. Where are the twins? Can I hold them?” She sat up and rubbed the back of her head.
“Um, that’s one of things I came in here to tell you,” Bail stammered, growing nervous, “ah, Master Yoda and Master Kenobi have decided that it would be best if we…”
Padmé’s eyes narrowed. “Best if you what?”
“Separated the twins from each other. And you.”
“
What?
”
“I’m so sorry, Padmé.”
Part I: Chapter I
Force, she hated this job. She knew she should have been a waitress, or even a worker at the Alderaan palace. Something less… noticeable. Bail and the two remaining Jedi had fervently disapproved of the idea, but she had stuck firmly to her plan, telling them that it was her life, not theirs. She had told them that she appreciated their concern, but she couldn’t go on living the rest of her life in fear of the Empire. Or her husband.
Padmé shuddered. Every time she heard the name Darth Vader, she immediately tensed. She couldn’t help it. Even though it had been almost twenty-one years, she still could not bear to think of the man she loved murdering millions of people without any guilt or remorse.
He would always be Anakin Skywalker to her.
Gazing at the large, bright moon through one of the windows in her Coronet City apartment, she sighed and looked at the chrono. It read that it was a little past midnight. She would never get any sleep at this rate. Padmé sat up, ran a hand through her cropped hair, and slipped out of bed. She padded into the ‘fresher and stared at her reflection, wondering how in Force’s name she ended up like this.
Her hair had been cut a long time ago for discovery reasons. She had also dyed it a near black, just in case. The style was a bit longer on the top, but short, clipped. She usually kept it in a spiked fashion.
She hadn’t changed her eating habits; if anything, she had gotten much thinner. Not overly skinny, for there was pure muscle underneath. All of those self defense classes she had taken as a young queen had paid off for the job that she was currently undertaking.
Her eyes had dark shadowing around them. She always kept them like that nowadays. Made her look almost dangerous, if not mysterious. She liked it. It also added to her disguised appearance. No one would recognize the regal Senator of Naboo now.
Padmé knew she’d changed. She wasn’t the small, frightened, always-looking-over-her-shoulder Senator during the end of the Clone Wars. She wasn’t the petite young woman who needed protection or comfort.
She was a bounty hunter.
Ironic, huh?
She thought mildly.
All this time I went on about diplomacy and negotiation, saying there was no need for war or fighting. I used to be against these people, but now I’m one of them. There’s no negotiation with the Empire. I’ve seen that more times than I’d care to count. If you can’t beat them, join them.
But Padmé wasn’t working for the Empire, of course. She did various jobs for the Rebellion, such as bringing in traitors, spies, or threats; working for trading companies not affiliated with the Empire; or spynets working for the Rebellion undercover. She would occasionally steal something valuable for the Rebellion, such as battle plans, hidden strategies, or locations of secret Imperial hideouts, but most of the time she was hunting and bringing in some of the worst Moffs, Admirals, or any disgustingly evil Imperial.
She’d never thought that she would make a living out of doing such a low job, but it made good money, even though killing and bringing in people for money wasn’t something she enjoyed in the least.
She kept her identity secret: the fewer people who knew who she really was, the better. Not even Rebel leaders Mon Mothma and General Dodonna were aware of her secret.
The former queen of Naboo often wondered how her parents were doing, and if they were still alive. She hoped her family would be all right. She knew that if they were aware what she was doing, the kind of life she was living now, they would be shocked, horrified even.
Padmé put her head down.
No
. It wasn’t her fault.
She
didn’t create the situation. She was doing it for her children. Her precious son and daughter. Living for them… for
him
.
One lone tear trailed down her cheek and dropped with a quiet splash into the porcelain sink. Her head stayed down.
A japor snippet necklace was clutched tightly in her fist.

Very nice beginning.
I love the idea of Padme surviving and fighting for the Rebellion. Its how the movie really should have ended.
Being a bounty hunter is an interesting twist.
Please add me to your PM list for this
Looking forward to more

Really? What's your penname on Fanfiction.net?

Thanks, I wanted to try something different. I always thought Padme got a bad cut of the deal and her death was completely OCC. I agree with you completely that she should've kept on living. And the whole bounty hunter thing just popped into my head one day - I actually was inspired to write this story by a photo of Natalie Portman - if you go to my website and click on 'Padme piccys' you'll know what I'm talking about.
VaderLVR64
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. I'm glad you like it.
Mirik
Yeah, there are a lot of them floating around. Thanks!
dtdang2
Thank you, I will!
Author's Note: If you want to see how Padme looks as a bounty hunter, then go to my website and click on 'Padme piccys.' The first two pics are how I picture Padme to look.
Part I, Chapter II
The next morning, Padmé awoke, still exhausted. She had gotten very little sleep last night, and her neck was aching. Stretching herself, she entered the small kitchen and poured herself a cup of strong caf. She stared out into Coronet City, watching the ships pass by one after another. It was peaceful here. The beautiful capital city of Corellia was nowhere near as large or grand as Coruscant, but it held a special place in Padmé’s heart. She didn’t know why. Maybe it was the only place that felt like home now. Cities used to be nerve wracking for her when she had been a senator, but now they calmed her: the continuous traffic, the noises, and the lights from the buildings. In a way, it was strangely comforting.
She turned on the holo-proj and watched the news for a bit. Darth Vader came up on the screen in a story about the Rebels being found on the planet Hoth. Most of them had escaped, the reporter said, but many of them had been killed.
The reporter continued talking about the attack on the Rebel forces, and how there was now a large bounty on the head of Luke Skywalker. He was, apparently, the Rebel who had destroyed the Death Star.
Luke. Luke Skywalker. Her own son, her beautiful son! He had become a pilot, just as his father had been, and was hopefully following his father’s example to become a well-loved hero among his peers.
Padmé wondered what her son was like. Was he sweet? Caring? Compassionate?
Like Anakin had been?
She worded silently.
“…The Rebel leaders also managed to survive the attack,” the reporter said, disappointed, “the search for the Rebels and Skywalker, who have now fled the planet, continues. Back to you, Jas.”
Well. Her son was a famous pilot and a Rebel. And she had never even met him.
Leia was a slightly different story.
Padmé had gone to see her for a few days, many long years ago, when Leia had been around three. Bail and his queen hadn’t liked it. Padmé suspected that the Queen was jealous of Padmé’s relationship with her daughter; since she and Leia had instantly connected, while the Queen and Leia didn’t seem to get on as well. Bail, of course, would follow his wife’s lead. He had asked her, in the most polite way that he could, to never again see her daughter. After that, she hadn’t returned. The former Queen of Naboo wondered if Leia would ever remember her.
Padmé flicked off the holo-proj and strode into her bedroom, picking up the sound of the distinctive beeping of her comlink.
“This is Ash Shadya,” she said in a lower, tone, using her other identity. She also had decided to go with the Imperial accent long ago to make her even less noticeable and more appealing to the Empire. Sometimes, with her accent, she forgot that it was her talking.
“Shadya,” a man on the other line spoke. “Got another job for you.”
Padmé inwardly sighed. “The target?”
“Moff Denn Wessex. You leave first thing.”
Padmé nodded. “Right. Shadya out.”
Wessex was one of the first regional governors in the history of the Empire, and he was blasted proud of the fact. He sipped his dark alcoholic drink, looking at a data pad while relaxing in his expensive Coruscanti suite.
He didn’t notice a smaller shadow slipping into his apartment and shutting the door softly behind it. Nor did he hear the sound of the security cameras blinking off. He kept his eyes on the data pad, oblivious to anything else.
The dark figure quickly and quietly crept into the kitchenette and carefully deactivated the comlink connection. The figure then moved into the grandly furnished living area and checked for any sign of life.
Well, guess he wasn’t in there.
The unknown intruder quickly held up a blaster upon hearing a noise to the left. The stranger slowly crept up to the opening of the grand study and peeked inside.
Ah!! Finally.
Sneaking up behind the Moff, the figure raised its gun and -
“By the Emperor!” Wessex cried, ducking low into his chair. He rolled down onto the floor and reached blindly for any weapon nearby –
The dark, unknown stranger darted around the chair and fired again –
Wessex managed to roll to the side just in time, but his arm was hit, and now rendered useless. As he backed away, whimpering, he whined, “W-who are you? What do you want with me?”
The figure came closer, his blaster pointed at the Moff’s chest. “I want you,” a low voice stated coolly.
Wessex began to blubber incoherently, muttering pleas. “Please don’t hurt me – I’ll do whatever you want! I’ll give you anything you want!”
The figure fingered the trigger. “I don’t think you understand,” the person said, silkily, “I don’t want anything from you. I want
you
.” Then, the figure fired.
Wessex slumped to the ground, unconscious.
The figure shook its head and took the datapad from the Moff with a slim, delicate, black-gloved hand. He read some of the contents and slipped the device into its utility belt. Taking out some metal handcuffs, he secured the Moff’s hands together before pushing him upright against the chair. The figure studied the man for a second before taking off his black helmet.
Padmé, as an afterthought, took the datapad out of her utility belt, glancing over its contents once more. The information would be very valuable for the Rebellion. She then stood up, put the datapad in her belt again, and dragged the Moff out of his apartment into her ship cleverly hidden in a dark, unnoticed corner. He would stay unconscious for at least four hours, plenty of time to deliver him to the people who had placed the bounty on his head.
She scanned the apartment, took some credits and valuable things she found, and left, shutting the door behind her.

How wonderful Padme now knows Luke is doing so well as a member of the Rebellion and still alive.
I just hope she gets to
run
into him sometime.
I love that she will be sending whatever info is on the datapad to the Rebellion.
Great update

I agree. The woman went from all tough, kicking butt from AotC to poor little me in RotS. It was pathetic, I thought. She's a tough cookie! She can take care of herself. What better way then become a bounty hunter?

Yes, she's not a cold-blooded murderer. Just a very angry Mom.
Thank you!

We'll see, we'll see. Maybe she will... in the future. One can only hope.
Part I, Chapter III
Prince Xizor sat in his chair, relaxed. Everything had been going according to plan, and if he had his way, Vader would soon be gone, humiliated in front of the Emperor. Everything depended on secrecy and careful consideration: it was a strategic play that needed to be played, and Xizor and Vader were the actors; Vader dictating the lines as written and Xizor ad-libbing to his own advantage.
Soon, he would be second only to the Emperor himself. Then, after that, he would be second to none.
His thoughts of victory and ultimate power were disrupted by the sound of the door chiming. “Enter,” he said, irritated.
A slim, tall blonde woman entered, and she bowed low before him.
Xizor was bored already. “If you have any news on the meeting I was supposedly going to have with Moff Wessex, I would be glad to hear it, Guri. The man is already fifteen minutes late. And you of all people know how I hate tardiness.” He smiled wanly.
Guri, his HRD, stared back at him, no trace of emotion on her beautifully crafted face. “Moff Wessex will not be joining you, My Prince,” she said. “He has been detained.”
Xizor frowned. “Detained how?”
“Detained permanently, My Prince.”
Xizor blinked. “He is dead then.” Oh, well. No great loss. He personally didn’t care whether Wessex lived or died, and he was certain no one else did, either, but Wessex had proposed an interesting business proposition that would aid Black Sun in areas that needed it. Weapons, explosives, additional men. Xizor was not lacking money, but any outside donations were accepting with great cordiality; and the donators had the pleasure of being under the ‘protection’ of Black Sun. Unless they became a nuisance, and then Xizor would have them disposed of.
Guri shook her head slightly. “No, My Prince. He was abducted from his home.”
This caught Xizor’s attention. “Abducted? How are they certain of this?”
“There were signs of a struggle, and the security cameras were disconnected during the event. There is no footage or evidence as to suggest who has taken the Moff.”
Xizor smiled at his assistant. “Surely Wessex had backup cameras.”
Guri nodded and placed a data chip in front of him. “We were able to attain the original recording. The authorities working on the case were not wise enough to check for hidden backup cameras.”
Xizor’s smile widened. “Thank you for this information, Guri.”
Guri nodded and left the room, silent as a cat.
The Prince turned on the recording and watched the scenario before him. He eyed the slim, black-clothed figure in fascination, then with some surprise as she took off her helmet. Underneath the helmet was a beautiful woman. She was slim, obviously deadly, and beautiful: an arrangement Xizor loved.
But who was she?
He flicked off the recording and steepled his hands together. This was an interesting turn of events.
He wanted to find this mysterious, dangerous woman. And he wanted her soon. But he would be patient. That was the way of the Falleen. Patience, cold calculation. He pressed the comm button and said, “Guri, get up here. I have a new assignment for you.”
Padmé had just finished the last of her dinner when her comlink beeped. She reluctantly picked it up, looked at the number, and turned it on. “Ash Shadya here.”
“Hello, Shadya, it’s J’in Hgok.”
Ah yes. One of her employers. Must have a job for her.
“What do you want? I just had a very difficult client.”
Hgok laughed. “Always straight to the point, Shadya,” he chuckled, “that’s why I like you.”
“All bounty hunters are like me,” she replied in an emotionless tone, trying to sound bored. “Who do I go after this time?”
“Admiral Ozzel of the newly crafted
Executor
. You know, Vader’s ship.”
A pause of disbelief.
“How in Sith’s name do you expect me to get him? What do I do, just waltz in there and say to Vader: ‘Hello, I’m a bounty hunter and I need to bring in your admiral’?”
“No, just listen to J’in,” the man coaxed, “there’s a bunch of bounty hunters getting together, recently called by Vader. He wants them to go after a Rebel freighter that has a Rebel Princess and a wanted smuggler on board.”
Padmé’s heart began to beat wildly. “Princess Leia?” She had to try very hard to keep her voice stable and low.
“Yeah, yeah, she’s the one,” the other said. “Since you’re a bounty hunter, just go to the Executor and tell Vader that you’re there to get info on the Rebel ship. Then bring me Ozzel, using whatever methods you prefer. If you finish the job, you’ll get double the amount you’re usually paid. There, was that so hard?”
Padmé was in a daze. “Fine. Shadya out.” She turned off her comlink, hurried into her bedroom, and grabbed a satchel from under her bed. She unzipped it and took out a black helmet that fully covered her face. Would it fool him, though?
He would know her. He could sense her presence.
Padmé sat down, thinking of all the things that could happen. What if he discovered her? She couldn’t turn down the job now; J’in would find another hunter to use, and he was the one who gave her the most credits for her work. She would have to risk it.
What would Obi-Wan think?
Obi-Wan’s not here,
a nagging voice popped up.
You’re on your own, girl.
She then resumed taking out her outfit and put it on. After gathering all the needed weapons and gear, she went out of the apartment and locked the door behind her.
Her small ship was on a landing pad reserved specifically for her – it was a gift from Rebel leader Jan Dodonna. She had it painted black with no outer markings so as not to be identified with any association.
Also on the pad, working on the ship’s wires, was an astro droid: Obi-Wan’s old counterpart, R4-G9, or Geenine, as she was called. Padmé and Obi-Wan had decided to make her a female, like R4-P17 had been, instead of a male, such as Artoo. Though she missed Artoo terribly, Geenine had a special connection with her. Maybe the droid reminded Padmé of the past or better times – Padmé wasn’t exactly sure.
“Hello, Geenine,” she spoke, swinging her bag into one of the storage compartments.
Geenine beeped a warm welcome, and then asked a question.
“Oh, just relaxing while I can,” Padmé responded, “I’m sorry I haven’t come to visit you, but my last job had me very tired. Forgive me?”
The droid whistled happily, which Padmé took to be a forgiving noise.
“Thanks. Come on, we’re off to the
Executor
. J’in has another job for us.” Ignoring the ill feeling in the pit of her abdomen, she climbed into the cockpit and started the engines, a million different thoughts running through her head.
So, Vader was after his own daughter, and he didn’t even know it. Maybe, if she was lucky, she could find her daughter before he or any other bounty hunter did. Padmé didn’t know what to think of Anakin anymore.
Ever since Bail’s death when Alderaan had been destroyed, she had been more on edge for Leia’s sake. She had heard that the Princess had been captured and interrogated by Vader; she just hoped he hadn’t done anything severe.
Small chance of that, he’s a Sith lord
, she thought bitterly.
Padmé put her hand on her forehead before sitting up and flicking the necessary switches and placing her hands on the controls. She tightened her grip on the controls and said forcefully, “Let’s go.”
The unmarked starfighter rose slowly from the landing pad and sharply turned, rising far above the Coronet City buildings and zooming into the darkening sky.
Hgok had given her the coordinates for the
Executor
, but it would take at least three days to get there; it was located in the outer rim near the cloud planet of Bespin.
Padmé stopped for fuel and food on the planet of Nkllon, which wasn’t too far from the Star Destroyer. Leaving Geenine to guard the ship, she went to a rather small, dimly lit bar, hoping that no one would take any notice of her.
However, as soon as she entered the bar, she saw at least three bounty hunters sitting at a table, eating. She only recognized two of them: Zuckuss and Dengar, two mangy human types, both battle-scarred.
Another human, sitting at the bar, ensconced in shadows and holding a drink in his hand, stared at her, sharp green eyes looking vaguely interested. The unknown man stayed silent as he watched her walk into the bar. After a few seconds, however, he looked away.
Realizing that they might recognize her as a fellow bounty hunter, Padmé took a deep breath and used the method that Obi-Wan had taught her to calm herself down. It worked. It, however, did not help her go unnoticed by the bounty hunters.
“Hey, you,” Dengar’s gravelly voice cut in, “you off to Vader’s ship like the rest of us?”
At the mention of Vader, the man sitting at the bar glanced sharply at them.
Padmé nodded under her helmet. “Yeah,” she answered in her Imperial voice. The helmet also made a big difference in vocal range. “I heard that he’s giving out a big reward for the capture of some Rebels.”
Zuckuss grunted. “Shouldn’t be too hard, but there are a lot of us,” he continued, “it’ll be hard to compete with some of the big guys like Fett.”
“I’m sure I’ll handle it,” Padmé replied smoothly, walking away from the group. Bounty hunters such as those two always made her nervous. She couldn’t help it. Padmé took a seat at the bar and tapped the bartender on the shoulder.
“I’ll have the special to go,” she said softly.
The bartender nodded, a distrustful look cast upon his elder features.
Padmé sat there, silent and alone, deep in thought. She didn’t even respond when the bartender placed a drink in front of her.
“Hey.”
Padmé’s head shot up, and she blinked. “What?”
The bartender eyed her oddly. “This’s for you,” he motioned to the drink he had put in front of her.
Padmé stared down at the drink. “I didn’t order this,” she shook her head, confused.
“Guy at the bar ordered it for you,” the bartender explained before turning back to his work.
Padmé’s eyes narrowed, and she looked around at the other people sitting at the bar. To her right sat two Neimoidians laughing at some inside joke and three other aliens. To her left was a Twi’lek, nearly asleep, and a human man, his face partially hidden in the shadows. As he finished his drink, he seemed to sense unfamiliar eyes upon him, and he looked up. His emerald green eyes bored into hers, and Padmé found herself wondering whom exactly this man was. He had a mop of red hair and was wearing a light brown jacket, a dark shirt underneath that, and dark brown pants and black boots that reached up to his calves. She could tell he was Corellian.
Padmé wondered why the man had ordered her a drink, but she nodded in his direction, to which he responded in kind, and then she looked away. The bartender handed her a bag, and she threw a sack of credits on the bar and slid off the seat. She walked past the Corellian and paused. “I suppose I should thank you for the drink,” she said.
The man shrugged. “I’m just wonderin’ why you didn’t take your helmet off to drink it.”
“Maybe I’m hideously scarred.”
The man snorted. “I doubt that.”
Padmé raised an eyebrow. “What makes you so sure of yourself?”
The man grinned, white teeth showing. “I just know these things.” Nodding to the bartender, he threw a few credits on the bar and stood up. “See you ‘round, sweetheart.”
Sweetheart?
Padmé gaped.
Just who does he think he is?
Shaking her head at the utter gall of Corellians in general, she strode out of the bar.
Give you a Vader plushie if you can guess who the mysterious Corellian is.

Xizor is one of the all time great EU characters!
I'm so glad to see him in this fic.
And I hate guessing, so I guess no Vader plushie for me!
