There was a pause. “Why did you help the Rebels escape, bounty hunter?” he demanded.
Even with the helmet on, she could still read his emotions. She knew he was furious.
“Because I had to,” she stated simply.
“Why?” Vader snarled. “You had direct orders to apprehend them – instead you decide to destroy one of my ships and allow them to escape!” His hand was beginning to come up, she noticed, swallowing.
“I could not let you take them prisoner,” she explained, “I did what I had to do to protect them.”
“You are unwise to challenge me,” he hissed.
Padmé knew she would eventually be exposed, so why not just get it over with? She reached up, pulled the helmet off her head, saying, “Maybe I am.” Her dark eyes bore into his mask, matching it with her own. “But that doesn’t mean I won’t.”
Darth Vader’s breathing stopped.

Ooooo!!!! This is TERRIBLY exciting! I can't wait to see how Vader handles this. Ehehehe...
Not Wrenga?? Dang...beats me to heck and back again. wink Shadows of the Empire?....I really only read Timothy Zahn and the X-wing Series...heh heh.
I know - I originally had him in, but with this character it just seemed to work better  SO SORRY JIX!!! I really wish there were more Jix-centered fics about him... he has SO much potential! He and other characters like Quinlan Vos and his son Korto just vanish off the face of the galaxy in the EU profic. You really wonder what happened to them.
I've read Zahn, but I personally feel his work is more tech-centered than character centered and get bored with his writing. Steve Perry's my fav, but Matt Stover is also excellent. Thanks!!

Padmé said nothing. She didn’t have to. Her eyes spoke for her. They were filled with rage, frustration, grief, bitterness, and the deepest kind of physical and emotional pain anyone could feel.
It seemed as if they gazed at one another for an eternity.
Eventually, Vader collected himself enough to say one thing. “Padmé.”
Padmé’s dark eyes continued to somehow inwardly tear apart his inner strength.
“I suppose you’re going to finish the job,” she calmly stated.
That was certainly not what Vader had been expecting.
“What?” His voice was filled with disbelief.
“You just killed a man because he lost the Rebels,” Padmé said. “I’ve just ruined one of your ships and am the real reason the Rebels got away in the first place.” Her voice was low, cool, and hard. “So kill me.”
Vader wondered if she had really lost her mind. “You honestly believe I will kill you?” he said.
“You tried to do it before,” she said softly, gravely. “Only that time I was pregnant.” Her eyes fluttered as she grew more dizzy from her head wound, and she began to sway.
A wave of shock could obviously be read among the officers, and they stared at the couple, their work long forgotten.
Vader growled, shut off the bonds, and caught her in his arms as she fell towards the ground.
Voices, voices. Padmé squeezed her eyes shut, the hum of what seemed to be a hundred different voices throbbing in her ears. The hum began to turn into a louder buzz, and then grew into a roar, and she set her teeth, the pain becoming nearly unbearable. Finally, she could stand it no longer.
“SOMEONE TURN THE DAMN VOICES OFF!” she screamed.
Instantly, they stopped. Padmé relaxed and went back to slip into her warm state of welcoming darkness. But when felt cool air passing over her face, it awakened her slightly, and she kept her eyes closed, savoring the feeling. Her senses were jolted when a smooth gloved hand touched her cheek.
Her eyes snapped open, and, on instinct, bolted upright. She hissed in pain, put a hand to her forehead, and muttered, “Why do I keep doing that?” She massaged her aching forehead and took a few deep breaths in and out.
When she heard the familiar breathing of her husband, she whirled her head to her left and saw him standing there, a dark and tall form against the star-studded background of the large window.
“You’re alive.” It seemed he could still not believe it.
“I was aware of the fact,” she said sarcastically.
He was silent.
“I guess I should thank you for not letting me be interrogated, but then that was what you wanted, wasn’t it? For me to be tortured until I revealed the Rebel secrets?” Padmé knew she might be hurting him, but she had to admit – she really didn’t care that much at the moment.
“If I had known it was you, I never would have¬–”
“What?” Padmé interrupted him. “Tried to have me killed? Have information squeezed out of me?”
He stood there for a second before taking a hesitant step towards the bed she was laying on. “I would never try to hurt you purposefully, Padmé,” he said.
“And you would never try to choke the life out of me, either. Oh wait, you already did.”
Vader stopped.
Padmé looked away. “I’m sorry.” Why did I just say that? She berated herself. He's a Sith!
“You have nothing to apologize for, Padmé. You did nothing wrong.”
“Then why in Sith’s name did you do it?” Padmé asked, turning back to gaze at him, pure hurt distinctly written on her face. “Why did you think I was with Obi-Wan? You know I would never betray you, Anakin.”
Vader turned to the window. “The Jedi betrayed me. Obi-Wan betrayed me. Why shouldn’t you as well?”
Padmé scowled. “It’s nice to know I was trusted.”
“You did lie to me for twenty years, Padmé. You made me believe you were dead.”
“I think I deserve to be let off the hook for that one,” she returned, “After all, how could I face the man that I had loved when I didn’t even know him anymore?”
Vader didn’t answer. Padmé stared at him for a moment and walked over to a side table where her helmet was resting.
“Why are you posing as a bounty hunter?” Vader asked.
“I’m not posing as a bounty hunter,” Padmé responded coolly, “I am a bounty hunter.” His helmet swiveled to face her; and the glare she was giving him unsettled the former Jedi somewhat. “I don’t have to answer to you,” she stiffly continued, rubbing her arm. “You’ve hurt me enough.”
Vader continued to gaze at her. “I thought you were dead. Palpatine – ”
“ – Is a liar,” Padmé shot out.
A brief pause followed.
“I should at least deserve to know what you have been doing with your life these past twenty years.”
“You don’t deserve anything, Anakin, after what you did to me – to our family! You nearly killed me, and now you’re hunting our only son to turn him to the Dark side. Give me one good reason I should tell you one single thing.”
Vader had no answer for a few minutes. “I was trying to save you,” he finally said in a more emotional voice. “I never wanted to hurt you. You were my life.”
Padmé studied him. “Then why did you doubt me?” She whispered hoarsely, “Did you honestly think I would ever leave you?”
“Tell me why Obi-Wan was on your ship,” Vader returned sharply, facing her again.
“He followed me, Anakin!” Padmé cried, more than a little frustrated, throwing her hands up into the air.
“That is not my name anymore!” he abruptly roared, turning on her and taking a menacing step in her direction.
Padmé’s eyes widened as she realized in despair that this… thing was no longer Anakin Skywalker.
“I can’t do this,” she distantly whispered. Without saying anything further, she unlocked the door and rushed as fast as she could out of the room.

I totally know what you mean about Zahn. Haha, but I am SUCH a tech junky.  And he, IMHO, is the only one who can do Luke, Leia, and Han properly. And I freakin' LOOOVE the X-Wing series...again with the techyness...haha
