Title: Imperial Allegiance
Author: Darth Manion
Timeframe: Approximately half-way between RotS and ANH
Genre: Political thriller

Notes: This story has been fermenting in my brain for quite some time, waiting to be told. So I hope that I've finally taken the time to do it right.

Also, Star Wars is not mine.

Seven years after Order 66

Prologue-Final Mission

0601 hours, 4/6/7 (Imperial Calendar)
Coruscant, Warehouse District AA23

"We're with Imperial Intelligence." Special Agent Murdak Kulik explained in a flat tone, displaying his ID. Kulik's angular features were set in a completely neutral expression, his somewhat messy dark hair swept off to the left.

The Whipid at the starpad entrance only stared him down, a look of pure loathing in his eyes. He was wearing a security uniform and had strict orders not to let anyone enter the starpad unless they had specific permission from the owners. "Which division?" he growled.

Kulik shot a sideways glance to Agent Worner. She had her eyes hidden behind a pair of sunglasses, and said nothing, still as a statue. "I'm afraid I'm not at liberty to disclose that information." Murdak said in an evasive voice. "But I can assure you, I have the authority to search this hangar," He added, gesturing to the squad of stormtroopers backing him up. "...by any means necessary."

The security guard hesitated for a second. Finally, he opened the door, keying the lock and standing back from the stormtroopers as they marched past. Worner was at the head of the group, with Kulik close behind her. A dozen stormtroopers stood in two single-file lines, following them into the massive hangar. There were numerous large boxes filled with what intel suggested contained illegal munitions; in the center of the room there was a Corellian freighter, where a few rag-tag droids were moving some of the boxes. The agents were impressed. The Empire hadn't realized how over-blown the situation had become.

Kulik walked over to one of the boxes and lifted the lid. Surely enough, it contained highly explosive baradium munitions. Murdak let out a low whistle as he examined the goods. "Analysis was right." he carefully placed the lid back. "These guys have got quite the operation going."

Agent Worner brushed a lock of blond hair over her ear. "I just hope we're not too late." she lowered her glasses and scanned the cavernous hangar with her eyes. The starpad had a few cargo doors, but the only way for the ship to take off was through the retractable ceiling, which was closed at the moment. She got closer to the ship, and the droids spotted her.

"Oh, dear!" a tarnished white protocol droid squealed. It dropped the box it was carrying and a couple E-11 blaster rifles spilled to the floor.

At the sound, a man emerged from the ship's boarding ramp. Seeing Agent Worner, he instantly recognized the Imperial uniform. Visibly distressed, he drew his blaster and fired.

The sloppy shots missed her, and she whipped out her weapon and called to the stormtroopers. "Don't let them open the ceiling!"

The unidentified man disappeared into the ship and Worner ran towards the ramp. She was almost within three strides of getting aboard when a turret descended from the belly of the ship and opened fire on her. She ducked behind a box for cover as the heavy laser bolts tore through the air above her. The situation had just become much more complicated.

More shots came from her right and she spotted Agent Kulik among a half-dozen stormtroopers. Blasters blazing, they provided Worner with enough time to prevent the smugglers from escaping. She spirited toward the roof controls to prevent the ship from taking off.

Murdak and his stormtroopers found some cover, and began to shoot at the craft. "Watch your fire!" Kulik ordered. "If a blast hits one of those baradium canisters, this whole place will blow sky high!"

There was a loud grinding sound as the roof panels started to pull apart and the low rumbling of the freighter engines filled the room. Coruscant's congested skyways and towering skyscrapers became visible overhead; the pilot would evade them with ease if he got away. Worner' voice came over Kulik's headset comm. "They've got an override for the roof controls!" she told him, her tone stressed. "We can't let them escape."

"You want us to shoot it down?" Kulik asked.

"We're in a room filled with weapons, Murdak. Think of something." she grunted.

Kulik looked up at the ship again, and saw the turret take aim at Worner, who was just across the room. Without thinking, he leaped from his cover and ran towards her, taking shots at the craft as it hung overhead. But he was too late. The turret sprayed Worner' position with laser fire, and she barely dodged the blasts by jumping to the side, behind a crate of baradium cores.

To Murdak, the scenario became almost surreal. A stray bolt hit the crate, and time seemed to slow down as the baradium ignited, exploding with the force tenfold of that of a standard thermal detonator. Murdak ran as fast as he could away from the explosion, jumping over boxes and crouching behind a case of Blastech T-21's. He felt the heat of the explosion fill the room, and then recede. Shielding his eyes, he managed to see the burst radius shrink as the baradium burned out and the blast field imploded, totally obliterating anything caught in it.

The ship had attained enough altitude and shot into the sky, escaping with their only lead. Murdak sifted through the crispy remains from after the explosion searching for any sign of Agent Worner. Bile rose in his mouth as he realized that she had most likely been reduced to little more than ash. She had been his mentor and confidant ever since he'd been recruited into Imperial Intelligence, and in his mind the true failure was being unable to prevent her death.

Manion, I will certainly require a PM when Vale Death is posted grin

Great start to the story! Though dammit, I liked the sunglasses-wearing Agent Worner already tongue Well, now Murdak has some fairly poigniant motivation for whatever the story may bring. I love political thrillers, especially ones with a cast of OCs, so I cant wait to see where this is headed!

Great start - I'm hooked applause

Yay, replies! I'm glad that those of you that commented enjoyed it. And rest assured, the events that take place in the prologue will have long-lasting repercussions. This story will have death aplenty, so be warned! skull

The PM list is as follows (in alphabetical order) -

Luton_Plunder
Six-Foot-Yoda
snowspeeder_gunner
The_Face
VaderLVR64

Now for some commentary before I begin- While I was writing the next couple chapters, I decided that the events and character evolution that I wanted to take place simply could not fit into one story. As a result, I choose to re-dub this story "Imperial Allegiance: Vale Death", meaning that there will be more "IA" stories to follow.

So without further procrastination, here is chapter one:

Chapter I - Vale Death

A Long Time Ago, In A Galaxy Far, Far Away . . . .

1277 hours, 10/2/8 (Imperial Calendar)
Korriban, Site 2-B189

Turnad Mir gripped the large jagged piece of metal in his right hand, and waited. He spared a glance out of the nearby window, and saw nothing but the wild sandstorm that threatened to bury the entire base. Already it had undone all the work his team had done, covering the ancient ruins in sand once again. But now it was pooling drifts of sand around the bunkers themselves. Turnad had a sinking feeling that he was about to become a permanent addition to the find.

He was standing beside the doorway into the communications room from the supply room. Soon, the others would come into the supply room to find him, and then... and then...

The jagged metal began to dig into his own flesh. Why did he need to kill them? They were his colleagues, his friends, but now...

He tried to think. The more he attempted to piece everything together, the more his head hurt. Almost as if he didn't want to know why this was happening.

"Turnad? I know you're still alive."

He wanted to see who had spoken, but dared not move. It was one of the others. They were coming to kill him.

"It's just you and me now, old friend."

Dev. It was definitely Dev's voice, the slow, paced speech, the raspy undertones. Dev . He had killed the rest of them. Dev wasn't very strong, or smarter than the others. But it didn't matter how he had killed them. Turnad only knew one thing; he would be an easy kill.

"Come out so I can kill you."

Turnad gripped his improvised weapon even tighter. Now, do it now!

A savage yell escaped his lips as Turnad leaped from his hiding spot, lifting the blade high above his head. Dev stood right in front of him, a malevolent smile stretched across his face. As Turnad brought the blade down he aimed for his heart. The metal seemed to cut through the air like syrup, not quite falling fast enough. He pulled down with all his strength, knowing that soon it would pierce Dev's skin, but it never did.

The blast seemed to echo in Turnad's head for hours as he stood there, motionless, looking into Dev's merciless black eyes. His blow never reached it's mark. The blade just hung over his head, refusing to move downward no matter how hard Turnad pulled it downward. As the darkness began to creep into his eyes, pulling him backward, he saw Dev holding a blaster in his hands.

Dev watched as Turnad's body fell limp. He was dead before he hit the floor.

He was the only one left. He had killed them all. Every single one of them.

Just as They had instructed him to.

Then it was if a veil had been lifted. For a split second, he could think clearly. These men and women he had killed; they were not his enemies. They were his friends. He had forgotten why he was supposed to kill them. Now, he was trapped in a mausoleum. Only he was still alive. A murderer trapped in the grave with his victims.

He looked into the vacant face of his last victim. Turnad wouldn't hurt a fly. So why was he trying to kill him? Why did he kill him? Why was everyone dead?

Dev began to cry. It was all too much, too much....

Slowly, he lifted the blaster in his hands to his own head. He had to make sure there was no one left to kill.

laugh I love that in alphabetical order, I - with a username beginning with 'L' - am at the top. The fact that I am so easily amused is probably a commentary on me tongue

Now, for the chapter - this was extremely creepifying. The perspective shift between Turnad and Dev was great for showing off how they were both in exactly the same situation. Something is making them want to kill things - and lots of things - so if I know my Korribans from my Dagobahs, I'm willing to bet there is some sithly influence going on here cool

Nice way to kick-start things! And good to hear this will become a series. I'm quite fond of them myself tongue

Fascinating start, Manion! I've been meaning to check out some of your work, so when I stumbled across this I said 'why not?'

I'm glad I did. You've set up a nice tale with some intriguing premises, especially with that chapter on Korriban. Simple, and yet so astoundingly vivid. I really enjoyed it.

So, we've got:

OCs
"This story will have death aplenty, so be warned!"
Political Intrigue
Thriller
Awesome title

Yeah, this story pretty much has everything going for it. Throw me on the PM list, if you could. I'd appreciate it.

Nice work! applause applause

I'm back! Now let's take a look-see at these replies...

Futon - "Creepifying" indeed. When I proofread it I had to double-check to make sure I was reading what I had written. Truth be told, I was quite astounded that I was capable of writing something quite that sinister. ("Sometimes I even surprise myself..." wink ) As for knowing your Korribans from you Dagobahs... I'd blame the drinking water, but there is none.

Exeter - I'm flattered blush . Although, the next couple of chapters will be focusing on introducing new characters, so wanton destruction will have to wait. Consider yourself added to "Teh PM List!"

snowspeeder_gunner - Characters will do more than drop; if I have any say in it, they'll burst into flame or melt like those guys at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

VaderLVr64 - Glad you enjoyed that bit! It was one of those cases where I decided "less is more".

Aw, I just noticed that in the last two chapters I already killed off most of my characters. Time to introduce some more cannon fodder!

Chapter II - Early Release

0601 hours, 10/2/8 (Imperial Calendar)
Merakai, Imperial Prison

Merakai was, at least in Captain Yen Durmound's opinion, an unpleasant planet. The whole rock was virtually covered in gooey, smelly swamp land. Maybe the native Khil's cup of... of... whatever it was they drank, but Durmound liked his planets to have at least some solid ground and limited stench. Possibly the lack of appeal made it ideal for an Imperial prison.

Entering the facility, his wish for dry walking surfaces was granted, but the smell continued to linger even within the confines of the building. "Figures." He mumbled under his breath so his guides wouldn't hear. The first escort was the Khil warden, and their species thrived on world such as this where the air was thick with microorganisms. Durmound, on the other hand, was adamant in his preference for the sterile air of starship holds. The second was a human, as far as Durmound could tell, and was dressed in a black uniform. Black uniform. That could only mean one thing: Imperial Intelligence.

Anyone from Imperial Intelligence was never a good sign.

"What did you say the number was, again?" The Khil asked, the voice produced by the blowing of air through the flaps of skin that fell across the creature's esophagus. The flaps, called hullepi, caught the microscopic tidbits that served as the species' sole method of sustenance. The resulting voice was a spooky whispering, like a shout carried by the wind to one's ear; a ghostly call that caused the hair on the back of your neck to stick up and a shiver to run through your entire skeleton.

"Number twenty-four-oh-one." The agent spoke in a very authoritarian tone, the voice laced with a recognizable Core accent. After a few more strides, the Khil stopped and tapped a sequence into a keypad welded to the wall. Beside the keypad was a door labeled simply with the four large numerals, lacking any windows and possessing only a tiny slot Durmound assumed was where food was served. Slowly, the door grinded against the frame, sliding off to the side.

Peering ever so cautiously into the cell, the Khil followed his gaze curiously. "Who is in here?"

"Only the most cunning criminal in the galaxy." The Imperial Intelligence agent answered simply.

Durmound leaned forward, straining his eyes in the dim light of the cell. "Sure he's in there?"

Slowly, and with the kind of sluggish deliberation usually only associated with the Kitonak people of Kirdo III, a head poked out of the gloom. It was caked with dirt and grime, the hair long and wild. The eyes were long accustomed to the darkness and the pupils were swollen to accommodate the pitch blackness. What little skin could be seen was dirty and scarred, battered as one that has either been through many battles or simply lost a fight with a gundark.

Durmound quickly pulled back, recoiling from the grotesque face. "Well, there's something in there."

The Intelligence agent put a finger to his mouth, signaling to Durmound to be silent. "Prisoner Twenty-Four-Oh-One," he began, speaking slowly and clearly like a politician dictating to a large crowd. "Can you hear me?"

The head moved up and down, bobbing with droid-like precision.

"Good." The agent took a moment to gesture to the Khil guard to leave. Then the agent took a few measured steps into the gloomy cell, hands still folded behind his back. "I want you to listen very carefully, because I have a proposition for you."

The massive eyes followed him as the pupils slowly shrunk in the presence of light.

Stopping in the center of the room, the agent turned to face the convict. "I will only make this offer once."

The eyes of the prisoner did not glare, or stare, or look. They only sat in the man's sockets, like a pair of black holes.

"What I am about to propose is both lucrative and highly dangerous." He continued. "But if you accept, you will leave this cell, and if you keep up your end of the deal, you will never have to return to this planet again. If you decline..." The agent hung on the word, knowing the effect it would undoubtedly have on the drama of the situation. "...then you can stay where you are until you die."

Still, only silence from the head in the shadows.

The tiniest of smiles began to creep across the agent's face. "But nothing is free, especially freedom." The Intelligence officer continued. "If you choose to leave, you will come with me, you will work for me. You will follow my orders without question. I will own you, until I feel you have repaid the Empire for your crimes."

Absolute silence.

Leaning forward ever so slightly, the agent said in almost a whisper, "What say you?"

The next few moments dragged on into an eternity. It seemed to Durmound that the prisoner might as well be brain-dead. The part of his mind that dabbled in this sort of dark humor speculated that it was either the blame of the disease-ridden swamp environment, or really bad prison food. The man from Imperial Intelligence seemed to give up as well. He stalked out of the cell and into the hall, his face and movements not betraying a single thought or attitude.

Durmound floundered, unsure of what was further expected of him. He looked to the agent as he continued to return the way they had came, and back to the open cell in front of him, resisting the urge to shuffle his feet in desperation.

Suddenly, a voice materialized in his ears. It was clear as crystal, the sounds seeming to spring up as if out of thin air, the point of origin lost in the vastness of the universe, but sounding almost as if it had occurred right beside your head. Durmound was confused when he heard it, turning around to see if had been someone else.

"Well," Prisoner 2401 finally spoke, "what the hell."

Who is Prisoner 2401? Why is he being released by Imperial Intelligence? And will Durmound figure out what's going on? To answer the last question, of course not. Will you?

The equation 'Shifty Imperial Intelligence Operative + Hardened, Cunning Criminal = Hooooo boy' seems apt here wink

I love it when a bad guy gets coerced into collusion with another bad guy. The dynamic between them is always way cooler than two good guys wink I loved the prisoner's reaction to being asked such a long and deliberate question, haha. Chapter III - The Keeper

0637 hours, 10/2/8 (Imperial Calendar)
Merakai, Imperial Prison

Durmound was uneasy as he sat in the atrium of the Merakai Maximum-Security Penitentiary, despite the fact that he was well aware that he was not about to be incarcerated. Still, something seemed to hang over him like some horrible misfortune.

He had been asked by one of the Intelligence 'spooks' to accompany him at the release of an apparently particularly dangerous criminal. As unsettling as that was, now he was forced to sit in the lobby with him while waiting for the prisoner to complete his tidying up.

The agent was sitting only a few feet away, and Durmound was wondering whether or not it would be appropriate to make small talk. What would he talk about? The weather? There was a recent meteor storm over Delrakkin that was causing a minor fuss. That might be boring, though. So Durmound remained uncomfortably silent, twiddling his thumbs.

After a few moments, the prisoner emerged. His face was now shaved and cleaned, his pupils now considerably adjusted to the light. He walked out into the antechamber with a spring in his step and whistling an odd tune.

At least he looks pleased about this, Durmound thought as the Imperial Intelligence man approached him. Durmound stood up to join him as he began to converse with the prisoner.

"And to what do I owe a visit from the notorious Ubiquitoriate?" 2401 asked, a sly smile cutting across his face.

The agent mirrored the smile, albeit with a bit more of a sinister edge. "If you recall, you work for me now." Now the agent began to walk in circles around the man with his hands clasped behind his back. "I know who you are, I know what you've done, I know everything there is to know about you....Maximillian Scammer."

"Oy!" Scammer shot at him, holding up a protesting index finger. "That's Captain Maximillian Scammer to you!"

An indignant snort was the unflattering response. "Unlikely. From this time forward, your name is mud if I have anything to say about it." The agent continued his analytical pacing. "What puzzles me most about you is that you have all this potential, all these talents, and yet you threw them all away by becoming a criminal."

"A pirate." Scammer specified, spraying some spittle as he placed extra emphasis on the 'pi' syllable.

"In any case, hardly what I would call a respectable profession."

Durmound watched this exchange in mild fascination. From his point of view, Maximillian Scammer didn't seem any more or less dangerous than the average human, so what made Scammer so special?

"You work for Imperial Intelligence. That's hardly what I would call a respectable profession."

Clever. He's a sly one, I'll give him that, Durmound conceded in his mind.

For a moment, the Intelligence Agent seemed to be taken off-guard, but he recovered with hardly a semi-second's notice. "I see." He pondered. "But if you recall, we still have a bargain. I have granted you your freedom..."

"Who are you?" Scammer asked, as if he wasn't even listening to anything the man had said.

At this, the man stopped and looked at Scammer's face carefully, studying him. "You may call me Xanos, for the time being."

Ignoring this, Scammer then pointed a finger at Durmound. "Who's this, then?"

The man who declared himself as Xanos turned to Durmound as well. "This is Captain Yen Durmound of the Imperial Navy."

"A captain, eh?" Scammer took a few steps toward him, both nearly the same height and eyes perfectly level with one another. "Fancy that." Durmound couldn't help but feel slightly intimidated at the rueful tone of these statements.

"Uh, thanks." Durmound replied somewhat lamely. This particular pirate apparently didn't posses a single iota of subtlety, or if he had heard of it, then he had decided he didn't want anything to do with it. Durmound, on the other hand, was all about staying under the scanner.

Xanos bowed his head and looked at the floor, possibly in thought. "Indeed, fancy that." He muttered before looking up. "Go ahead, introduce yourselves. Captain Durmound was summoned here to be your handler in my absence."

"What?" Durmound felt his jaw drop as he looked to the Intelligence agent in disbelief. He was supposed to be the keeper for a dangerous criminal!?

I suppose I no longer have to worry about avoiding trouble. Hell has already found me.

Xanos ignored him, and brushed past the two of them as he walked across the room towards the exit. "You'll have plently of time to get to know each other during the trip."

"Trip where?" Durmound asked, still incredulous.

Without stopping, Xanos replied, "To gather up the other members of your team."
