Title: The Death of Obi-Wan Kenobi
Author: powerfulforce
Type: ROTS AU, Vignette
Summary: What happens when Obi-Wan goes to Mustafar and what does he lose
*******************************************************************************
Tatooine
Here Obi-Wan had found solitude, the one place in the galaxy where not one person, alien or government would seek him out. Did he come to this desert planet as a final resting ground, a place where he could die? If you asked the locals, being Obi-Wan was a fate worse than death. A select few had known that he was once a Jedi and even fewer believed he would be the perfect Sith. For Obi-Wan had no love, warmth or compassion left inside of him. While he had no love in him, he would never be a perfect Sith. He had no anger, hatred, passion or fear with in him either. He was nothing more than flesh and bone, his spirit being taken from him only weeks ago. He came here to Tatooine, the place where he met the boy who would take his heart from him and turn him into the shell that he was now.
Three Weeks ago
Mustafar
Obi-Wan stood on the ramp of Padmé's ship as he witnessed his apprentice, his son, his brother strangle the woman that he claimed to love. A part of Obi-Wan wanted to scream at Anakin to stop what he was doing, yet at that very moment Obi-Wan had come to an epiphany. What does it matter if he saved Padmé? Did life in all of its shapes and forms matter anymore? All life comes to an end, everyone he ever loved would die one day, in fact everyone he ever loved was already dead. So he watched as Padmé struggled against Anakin's force grip, after a while Anakin released her and she collapsed.
"You turned her against me!” Anakin raged at Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan slowly strolled down the ramp towards Anakin and sadly replied
"No, Anakin you have done that yourself. In your lust for power, you have effectively burned all bridges with those you claimed to love and protect."
"Do not lecture me Obi-Wan, I see through the lies of the Jedi" Anakin said with his back turned to Obi-Wan as he continued his verbal tirade. "I have brought peace, security, freedom and justice to my new empire!” The small part of Obi-Wan that wanted to respond with compassion and turn Anakin back to the light was dying. The light in Obi-Wan was fading quickly, it took Anakin years to fall from the light, but today Obi-Wan had fallen after a few short hours. He surprised himself as he began to speak.
"You may not want to hear what I say, but you will listen to my final speech that I shall give to you. For years Anakin I have been speaking to a man who was deaf, trying to make a blind man see. We have spent many years together and I always thought that you were that man. I have come to the realization that I was always that man. You helped me realize something Anakin." With that Obi-Wan threw his lightsaber down as it rolled towards Anakin and lay at his feet.
"You're surrendering? I thought it was against the Jedi code to commit suicide." Anakin replied darkly.
"What is the point of life Anakin? Is there a reason to keep fighting against death? You’re the "son of the force", why don't you answer me? Of course, you’re just like your father. You create life and bring forth death, yet you have no answer for why the other exists. There is no light, there is no dark. There is only us. People. I don't expect you to understand. You took everything from me and still believe that you're the victim. I saw my brethren being killed by your hand and becoming one with your precious father, whom I fully served for years, even trying to raise it's wayward son. I am no longer your father, your brother or even your master. While I am no longer your master, you are still a slave and I don't care anymore. I don't want to save you, because there is no reason to. Take your weapon and mine, slay me already."
Anakin stood there befuddled. He had known Obi-Wan for thirteen long years, yet this wasn't Obi-Wan. He expected Obi-Wan to fight him, try to turn him back, not just give up on him. While the monster inside of him wanted to kill Obi-Wan, he couldn't do it. He couldn't bring himself to murder the man that he loved. He finally realized how far he had fallen as he saw the still form of his wife, brought down by his own hand. Standing in front of him was the only man he ever truly loved. But he couldn't sense that man in Obi-Wan.
"I'm sorry, for everything I have done to you. Please forgive me." Anakin said as tears started to form in his eyes. Obi-Wan was as stoic as ever as he approached his fallen apprentice. He walked up to him, put both hands on each side of Anakin's face. He placed a light kiss on his forehead and brought his mouth very closely to Anakin’s ear and whispered.
“There was a time when your apology would have mattered. I just don’t have it in me to care anymore." He backed away from Anakin as he felt the tears from his former apprentice fall onto his skin.
"You are dead to me Anakin. From this night forward, I never want to hear you or see you again. This is my final question that I shall ever ask of you. Are you happy? You finally got rid of me, just like you always wanted. For years you wanted me to stop chastising you, to stop telling you what is right. Well, you finally got your wish. You can live the life you’ve always dreamed of. I will never bother you again.” Obi-Wan walked passed Padmé and was able to make one small observation.
“Your wife’s dying”. Obi-Wan said as he walked towards Anakin’s starfighter. Anakin ran after Obi-Wan and grasped his shoulder.
“Please you have to help her, I can’t live without her.”
“Well she’s dying and you’re still perfectly healthy. I highly doubt that you’re going to die if she does.” Obi-Wan answered as he slowly pried Anakin’s fingers from his shoulder. Anakin went to his wife, muttering apologies to her as he placed kisses along her neck. Obi-Wan kept his back turned as he strolled leisurely to the starfighter.
“Obi-Wan!”, Anakin yelled after him. Obi-Wan kept walking.
“Master!” Obi-Wan however didn’t stop. He just kept walking as his heart disappeared, he no longer required one. There was nothing for him. Why was he walking towards the ship? He could just plunge himself into the lava river this very moment. While he told himself life didn’t matter, he just didn’t have it in him to end his own life. If he could feel, he would want Anakin to plunge the two lightsabers in his back. It would be poetic, for Anakin had already figuratively stabbed him, what could the literal version do to him? He was already dead. Yet for some unknown reason, he was prolonging this worthless existence.
“I need your help, please!”, Anakin screamed as tears streamed down his anguished face. But Obi-Wan would not heed his padawan’s cries. He would leave Anakin or Vader or whatever the hell he called himself now to his misery. Obi-Wan felt Padmé grow weaker and her children dying with her. But Obi-Wan wasn’t going to save her and Anakin had finally realized his master’s decision.
“I hate You!” a dark voice, but with such sorrow had emitted from Anakin’s lips. At that moment Obi-Wan stopped dead in his tracks and slowly turned his head towards Anakin, who was clutching onto his wife, crying. Obi-Wan said the last words he ever hoped to speak to Anakin.
“Frankly Anakin, I don’t give a damn. I really don’t.” With that Obi-Wan took off in the starfighter, drifting through space. He felt a dark presence pass him as he spotted Palpatine’s ship flying towards the molten planet. Go ahead and claim your new apprentice, soon you’ll both realize that there is nothing worth fighting or dying for. Obi-Wan darkly thought as he went for a destination unknown to him. By an ironic, cruel twist of fate his ship (well Anakin’s ship) had descended upon the desert planet of Tatooine. He sold the ship, bought a small hut and for each day till now had gone to the local cantina.
Present
So here he was, once a prestigious Jedi Master sitting in a filthy bar, finishing the contents of his fifth glass of Corellian whisky.
“Give me another”, Obi-Wan said gruffly to the barman.
“Buddy I think you’ve had enough, it ain’t healthy for ya to keep drinking like this. I know life is hard, but ya got to move on.”
“I am moving on, my old life was pointless. It was nothing but a bunch of silly prophecies and magic. So why don’t you just keep her filled?” Obi-Wan said as he raised his glass.
“I’m sorry buddy, but I’m cutting ya off fer the night.”
“Fine, I’ll go home then", Obi-Wan said as the winds howled outside the dusty cantina. He rose from his seat and walked to the door as the sands of the planet encircled the town, the result of a strong sandstorm bearing down on them
“If you go out in that storm in your condition, you’re gonna die mister.” For the first time in weeks, Obi-Wan smiled. He turned to the barman and said what be the last words anyone ever heard from him.
“How can I die, if I’m already dead?” With that Master Kenobi walked into the desert and met his end. He finally became one with the force, perhaps in death he found the peace that had been denied him in life.

Poor Obi-Wan!
"What is the point of life Anakin? Is there a reason to keep fighting against death? You’re the "son of the force", why don't you answer me? Of course, you’re just like your father. I don't want to save you, because there is no reason to. Take your weapon and mine, slay me already."
I loved that. It's true...Anakin destroyed all that Obi-Wan knew, all that Obi-Wan lived for, all that Obi-Wan loved.
I couldn't quite imagine Obi-Wan abandoning Padmé and her children, but if he was that despondent, I guess he would have.
Great job!

Thank you for the reply, that was actually my favorite part of the vignette as well.

A very striking work. I really appreciated Obi-wan's reaction to Anakin's darkness. They always say that apathy is the most dangerous of all emotions.

That's a different (and sad!) way of ending the duel.
“How can I die, if I’m already dead?”
Great job!

Thank you snowspeeder. I really did want to give an insight as to what would happen if Obi-wan essentially quit and stopped caring.

Yikes! Very well written and soo sad. This bit is just heart-rending:
“Master!” Obi-Wan however didn’t stop. He just kept walking as his heart disappeared, he no longer required one. There was nothing for him. Why was he walking towards the ship? He could just plunge himself into the lava river this very moment. While he told himself life didn’t matter, he just didn’t have it in him to end his own life. If he could feel, he would want Anakin to plunge the two lightsabers in his back. It would be poetic, for Anakin had already figuratively stabbed him, what could the literal version do to him? He would leave Anakin or Vader or whatever the hell he called himself now to his misery. Obi-Wan felt Padmé grow weaker and her children dying with her. But Obi-Wan wasn’t going to save her and Anakin had finally realized his master’s decision.
Great job! Now I need some fluff...fast!

I didn't know you had a story posted.
"years Anakin I have been speaking to a man who was deaf, trying to make a blind man see." I love that line.
There's a part where the order of the sentencing is off. Obi Wan tells Anakin he never wants to see him again. However, then he says he's going to ask him this one last question. Perhaps, he should ask his question first, then say he never wants to hear from him or see him again.
He is really telling him off. This Vignette definitely rocks. Very angsty. Obi Wan as having his spirit broken by Anakin. Reminds me of that scene in ROTS where they're floating on the lava and he says "I have failed you Anakin..."
