Just letting you know I'm still alive. happy

It may be a long time before the next post because my father is having medical trouble. We don't know what is wrong, but he is going through many tests to find out. So the story must be put on hold until Dad's situation is resolved.

I thank everyone for supporting this story. I also thank you for your prayers and thoughts. I will let you know when I start it up again.

Take care!

~SL~

Hello, everyone!

Sorry, no post.

My life continues to be "interesting." In March, I developed a kidney stone and had surgery to have it removed. Never had a kidney stone before and don't want another! Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for my father. The doctor is still conducting tests to determine the cause of his stomach problems.

Hope all is well with everyone. I still intend to complete the story, and I'll let you know when I have an update ready.

Take care!

~SL~

I'm back! The the next chapter of the story is based on the events in the novel, Splinter of the Mind's Eye

Part XII: How Powerful Are You?

“Lord Vader, we have received a report from the mining colony on Mimban,” the communications officer reported to the dark lord. “A young man fitting the description of Luke Skywalker has been spotted there. And a woman matching Leia Organa’s features is with him. It seems they have stirred up trouble there.”

Vader wondered how Luke and Leia ended up on Mimban. The mining colony was a secret in itself. But the planet held another secret: the Temple of Pomojema, more specifically, the Kaiburr crystal in which it housed. The crystal possessed properties that magnified the force. It was actually of little use to most beings, but someone with Luke’s potential could use it to an advantage.

“Set course full speed to Mimban. Send a communication to Captain-Supervisor Grammel that I will arrive soon. Meanwhile he needs to keep track of Skywalker and Organa.”

“Yes, my Lord.”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vader and Grammel made their way underground in search of the temple as Vader was certain that was also Luke’s destination. Unfortunately they encountered a tribe indigenous to the underground. The tribe launched and surprise attack that killed most of the stormtroopers. The attack distracted the Imperials long enough for Luke, Leia and their companions, a human named Halla and two Yuzzims named Hin and Kee to steal an Imperial vehicle.

They arrived at the temple and are immediately attacked by a creature with large jaws. This was the second such creature they found since entering the underground. Blasters and riffles have no effect on the creatures, which forced them to run into the temple. Luke decided to use his lightsaber to cut one of the pillars holding up the temple. Doing this caused part of the temple to collapse on the creature.

They ran to the back of the temple to search for the crystal. Luke stopped when he noticed Hinn and Kee were not with them. Them a piece of rubble fell from the ceiling and crushed Luke. Then Darth Vader emerged through the entrance with lightsaber ignited. Leia panics and finds Luke’s lightsaber.

As she sets up a stance to carry on a futile fight with the dark lord, Vader found himself admiring her strength. She was truly selfless. Then he looked with alarm at Luke. He sensed the boy was still alive, but he sustained considerable injuries. Again, Luke was disabled in some fashion. Vader began to wonder if Luke would be a benefit to him. He seemed weak.

Then there was Leia. He silently wished she were his offspring as she held the strength and character he needed to defeat the Emperor. There was something about her that drew him to her.

Leia suddenly attacked him. She handled the lightsable clumsily, but bravely. Still, she was a traitor that needed to be dealt with. Rather than prolong the fight, he slashed her with his saber severely injuring her.

Vader paid no attention to Luke. He wanted to render Leia unconscious. “Nice try, Princess. But lightsabers are dangerous. And now, I will prepare to take you with me so we can find out what you and your rebel friends are up to.” Leia’s thoughts returned to the day Vader tortured her in an attempt to make her reveal the location of the rebel base. She was nauseated at the thought of having to go through that again.

Luke, sensing the danger facing Leia, found the regained consciousness. Then a badly injured Hinn ran to him and removed the rock that crushed Luke’s ribs and injured many internal organs. Leia had dropped his lightsaber and he retrieved it and attacked Vader.

Vader cursed himself for not sensing Luke’s attack. Although Luke was no match for him, the element of surprise caught Vader off balance. Perhaps he underestimated his son’s abilities.

There was no time for talking as Vader tried to gain his balance. Luke slashed downward cutting off Vader’s right arm. Vader staggered backwards and fell into a deep pit. Luke stood in shock at what had just happened. He did all of it without thinking. As best as he could, the stretched out with the force to see if Vader was still alive. He was, but he was far away and unable to react.

Luke ran to Leia to check her wounds. He found Halla, the woman who told him about the crystal, helping Leia and Hinn. Then a glimmer of red light caught Luke’s attention. The slowly walked toward the light and found the Kaiburr crystal. He picked it up. Its size required Luke to carry it with both hands. The force opened to him in a way he had never felt it. Still, his limited knowledge made the experience one in which he had no control.

When Halla looked up to see what Luke was doing, she saw him fall to the floor. Leia and Hinn screamed as Halla ran to check on Luke. There was no pulse. He was dead. Halla covered her mouth with her hand as she plopped onto the floor in anguish. Then Luke suddenly arose wide awake. Halla gasped as did Leia and Hinn.

Luke blinked his eyes. “I died. My injuries were serious enough to kill me, but the crystal healed me.”

The others remained speechless as Luke stood. He carried the crystal to Leia and Hinn and were immediately healed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the bottom of the pit, Vader moaned as he regained consciousness. The fall would have killed him if not for the armor of his suit. His entire right arm was missing. He looked for it and found it several meters away. Unfortunately that arm contained some of his organic material. Replacing that arm would make him even more of a machine.

He stood up and looked around. The pit opened to a large cavern. He was too deep for his radio to work. Vader sensed there was a way out. He picked up his arm and began the long walk. He knew Luke and Leia would be long gone by the time he made it to the surface. He failed once again to retrieve his son.

He did discover, however, that Luke was tough. Vader was not sure when he would catch up with him again, but he knew the pursuit would be well worth it.

Wow, I feel sorry for Vader losing yet more of himself.

I just pray that his blood ties with his children will eventually redeem him. And that he will live to enjoy some time with them, too.
