Summary: Taking place eight months after the events told in
Dropping In
, Beru and Owen finally become engaged to be married... then tragedy strikes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chapter 1: Proposal
Owen paced nervously in the Whitesun’s courtyard, fingering the object in his pocket, as he waited for Beru to come outside.
Perhaps I should take her somewhere more romantic like the Motesta Oasis for this.
His stomach swirled for the umpteenth time and he felt like he was going to be sick. He only stopped his pacing when he heard a door open behind him. He turned to see Beru smile brightly at him as she emerged from her home.
By the triple moons, she is so beautiful!
His breath caught in his throat, and he cursed himself for a fool.
Idiot, you forgot the flowers! You can’t do this without the flowers!
“Owen, why didn’t you come inside?” Rising on her toes, Beru kissed his cheek.
“I want to talk to you out here.” He replied quietly after returning her kiss.
Looking at him with concern, she frowned slightly. “Is something wrong?”
“No,” he exclaimed, and then blushed slightly at how loud he had said it. Lowering his voice, he shook his head and took her hand. “No, I just um…” he gently squeezed her hand as he faltered and walked her over to the bench. He remained standing when she sat however, and leaned against the wall of the Whitesun residence. He looked over at the flowers in the garden and walked over to pluck a flower with white and gold petals. After returning to Beru, he placed it in her dark blonde hair with a small smile. “Do you remember our first time talking out here?” He caressed her cheek.
Beru placed a hand on the back of his and kissed the palm of his hand. “I could never forget it. You told me you loved me for the first time.” Her sky-blue eyes sparkled as she remembered that night eight months previously.
Owen nodded. “It’s also the first time we kissed.” He swallowed as he shifted from one foot to the other.
“Owen, what’s going on? You’re acting funny. Do you feel alright?”
“I’m fine.” He gruffly waved off the question. Taking a deep breath, he knelt beside her and took her hand in his. He finally took out the hand that he had been keeping in his pocket. He licked his lips nervously and cleared his throat. “Beru, I love you. You are everything to me. I need you more than water in the desert and want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?” As he spoke, his fingers shook while he placed a ring on her finger.
Beru took a sharp intake of breath as she smiled widely and put her free hand to her mouth. “Owen,” she squealed as she propelled herself off the bench to embrace him. As a result of her enthusiastic response to his proposal, Owen fell backwards, landing gracelessly on his back. Air was forcefully expelled from his lungs, and it did not help that Beru landed on top of him. She grunted with pain as her hand was smashed between the combined weight of Owen and herself and the ground. Rolling off him, she extracted her hand and shook it. Owen sat up behind her, and saw her shoulders shaking. He gently laid a hand on her back. “Are you alright? I hope I didn’t hurt you when you fell on me.” He asked as he shuffled around to look at her.
Beru nodded wordlessly, and Owen was relieved to see she was laughing. He hugged her then, and could not help laughing as well. After a moment, he pulled away and asked with a smile, “So, is that a ‘yes’, ‘no’, or ‘maybe’?”
“Yes, yes, yes, YES!” She gave him quick little kisses on various places upon his face between each affirmation, and then after the final squealed ‘yes’, she kissed him firmly upon the lips.
Owen pulled her closer as he passionately returned her kiss, pausing when he heard, “Ahem,” followed by a loud clearing of the throat.
Both Owen and Beru looked up to see her father standing not far away with his arms folded in front of him. In spite of his stern expression, there was a gleam in Tam Whitesun’s eyes as he asked, “What do you two think you’re doing?”
“Daddy,” Beru exclaimed excitedly as she jumped up and hugged her father. “Owen asked me to marry him!” She squealed in his ear before quickly pulling away and held out her hand to show off the ring. Before Tam had a chance to react, she gasped, “Oh, I have to go tell mom!” She hastily turned and ran inside.
Tam still had his arms folded across his chest as he looked at Owen with a raised eyebrow.
Owen stood and mirrored his future father-in-law’s pose with a straight face. The young man broke into a wide grin however, as he informed him, “She said ‘yes’.”
Tam threw back his head and guffawed. “I certainly hope she wouldn’t be as giddy after saying ‘no’.” He then clapped Owen solidly on the shoulder. “Congratulations, son… I’d say ‘welcome to the family’ if we didn’t already consider you a part of it.”
“Thanks, Tam.” Owen could not stop smiling.
Ok, here we will start to see Owen's gruffy side a little more.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chapter 2: Dinner
Just over an hour later, Owen and Beru walked hand in hand into his home where his stepmother was putting the finishing touches on dinner.
“Hello, you two,” Shmi greeted them cheerfully. “You’re just in time for dinner.”
“It smells delicious as always, mom.” Owen said as he picked up the ladle Shmi had just used to stir the pot and tried to take a nibble.
“No you don’t,” Shmi swatted his hand lightly and shook her finger at him as he grinned sheepishly.
“But, I’m a growing boy!”
“Around the waist, maybe,” Cliegg harrumphed as he walked in.
“I’m just proving everyone right who say I take after you.” Owen quipped before adding, “I’ve quite a way to fill your shoes… or should I say, tunic.”
Smiling quietly as the father and son banter continued, Beru got the plates out of the cabinet and started setting the table.
“Oh, thank you,” Shmi smiled gratefully at the younger woman. Then she spotted the ring Owen had placed on Beru’s finger. It was a gold and silver braided band with a two shining diamonds sitting side by side. One diamond was slightly smaller than the other one. “Oh, what a pretty ring!”
Beru’s eyes sparkled as she gazed questioningly over at Owen who came to her side and put his arm around her shoulder. “Mom, dad, I asked Beru to marry me, and she said, ‘yes’.” He then kissed her cheek.
“I wish I had known about this sooner, I’d have fixed something special.” Shmi said as she embraced first Owen then Beru.
“All your meals are special,” Cliegg put an arm around his wife’s waist and kissed the top of her head. He patted his own waist with his free hand and added, “To which my expanding girth can testify.” He ignored Owen’s smirk, and hugged Beru. “Welcome to the family.” When he pulled away from her, he added with a wink, “If he doesn’t make you happy, I’ll turn him over my knee and spank him for you.”
Beru covered her mouth as she laughed.
“Hmph, with your expanding girth, that would be near impossible.” Owen quipped then added in a more serious tone, “but don’t worry, it won’t be necessary because I’ll do everything I know to make her happy.”
He was dismayed when he looked over at Beru and saw tears welling up in her eyes and her lips quivering slightly around her smile. “Hey,” he spoke softly, “what’s wrong?” He reached out to wipe a stray tear from her cheek.
“Nothing, I’m just…” she blushed as she sniffled, “…so happy!”
Smiling tenderly, Owen hugged her and kissed her temple. “So am I,” he whispered huskily.
Several minutes later, the four of them were sitting around the kitchen table. “So, have you set a date?” Cliegg asked around a mouthful of dewback mushroom stew.
Owen shook his head with a grunt just as Beru replied, “We haven’t spoken about any of the details yet.”
“I don’t see what the big deal is. We set a date, show up at the justice, and take our vows.” Owen shrugged as he took another bite.
Beru almost choked on her food. “That’s not a wedding, that’s just making marriage vows!”
“What’s the difference?” He asked clueless.
“Well a marriage… I mean a wedding… vows… family…” Beru sputtered, not believing the indifference Owen showed towards the big event.
“A wedding is a ceremony held in front of close friends and family, Owen.” Shmi gently explained.
“But you and dad had me witness your marriage vows at the justice, and that was nice.”
“That’s because you were the only family who could attend, son.” Cliegg shrugged, “And since I hadn’t gotten in touch with Tam back then, there were no friends I really wanted to share that day with.”
Owen looked over at Beru whose eyes were downcast. “This means a lot to you… having a big wedding and all?”
“Not exactly big,” she amended as she looked up at him, “but I would like our families to be there.”
“If it makes you happy, then that is what we’ll do.” He took her hand and gently squeezed it.
“I love you,” she leaned over and kissed his cheek.
“I love you, too.” He said as he went back to eating. “But, don’t expect me to wear an urusai suit.” He referred to the suits named after the colorful male reptavians that grooms traditionally wore on Tatooine.
“Why, you’d look so handsome in it.” She smiled at him and batted her eyelashes.
“I think you have something in your eye.” He smirked.
“Owen!”
“Beru, I’d rather eat Hutt food!”
“There will be plenty of time to work out the details.” Shmi said gently yet firmly.
“Yes, ma’am,” Owen agreed, relieved to put off the argument for now.
I am
not
going to wear an urusai suit!
He promised himself.

I liked the argument over the wedding perparations, and Owen insisting about what he would

Yeah, it was so sad in AoTC when we didn't get to see a glimpse of them together.
SilSolo:

I'm one of those girls who hates dresses... well, let me amend that... I don't mind dresses, it's wearing pantyhose that I loathe.
As for the suit Owen does not wish to wear, here's a link w/ pictures of an urusai:
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Urusai
I'm picturing a suit with yellow pants w/ blue-green pinstripes down the side, a fancy yellow poncho with blue circles on the front and a 'tail' in back that goes just below the knees and fans out at the bottom. Oh, and don't forget the blue half-mask!
It's rather austentatious.

Thank you. Cliegg's a big man, he can take it. No pun intended, btw.

A nice update! I loved the family banter
I was having fun with it and drawing upon personal experience.
I liked the argument over the wedding perparations, and Owen insisting about what he would not wear. Will this be a sticking point between him and Beru, I wonder?
Owen can be pretty stubborn.
VaderLVR64:

Hehe, I know if he will or not and I ain't tellin'
I know this is mean, but you'll have to wait until the next sequel to even see the wedding!
OK, on to the update:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chapter 3:
Of Clowns and Dirty Old Men
The rest of the meal was mostly eaten in silence. Beru kept looking over at Owen, trying to judge how upset he was about the possibility of wearing the traditional wedding garb. Even though she truly believed he would look handsome arrayed in a colorful urusai suit, it did not matter to her what he wore. The important thing to her was that they be wed in front of their families.
As long as he wears something, I’ll be happy
, she thought. Then she got an image of Owen saying his vows in his birthday suit and could not help but laugh. She covered her mouth as her cheeks turned beet red in embarrassment.
At the puzzled stares from all, she cleared her throat. “I’m sorry, I was just thinking…” she paused to sip some of her blue milk, as she tried thinking quickly of something humorous yet not embarrassing. “About how Mik pranced around in his urusai suit at his and Coolie’s wedding.”
“Mik is outrageous,” Owen chuckled as Cliegg and Shmi laughed. “Did you see him strut in front of Tam like a **** keeping another male away from his mate?”
Shmi laughed, “I thought Tam was gong to clobber him… it was supposed to be the dance between the father and bride, after all.”
“Yeah, but then Tam just started dancing with him.” Owen laughed as he shook his head.
“Those two are one of a kind!” Cliegg’s eyes were full of tears from laughing so hard. “What made it funnier was they were both trying to lead.”
“Yeah, and then Coolie stood beside them with her hands on her hips,” Beru mimicked her sister’s pose as she spoke, “and tapped her feet as she said, ‘Ahem, the dance was supposed to be with
me
!” She perfectly imitated Coolie’s voice.
As one, Owen and Cliegg imitated Tam, “Not now dear, us men are bonding.”
“Poor Coolie was getting upset though. It was nice of you to dance with her, Beru.” Shmi smiled at Beru.
The younger woman nodded and smiled back. Soon, dinner was over, and she helped Shmi with the dishes as the Lars men went outside to check the perimeter of the homestead before turning on the shields for the night.
As they washed the dishes, Shmi looked over at Beru. “So, how much do you want to see Owen wear an urusai suit?”
Beru smiled, “I’d like it a lot, but, the more important thing is for us to have our families witness our wedding. He can wear what he wants.”
“Don’t tell him that, or we’ll never get him to wear it.” Shmi winked conspiratorially.
Beru giggled then sighed with another smile. “I meant it when I said he’d look handsome in it, but I don’t want him to wear something he’s uncomfortable with.”
Shmi waved off Beru’s concern. “It’s only for a couple hours if that. It won’t kill him.”
Before Beru could reply, Cliegg and Owen came inside. “What won’t kill who?” Cliegg inquired.
The two women exchanged meaningful glances, and Beru blushed slightly.
“We were just saying that it wouldn’t hurt Mik to be serious every once in awhile.” Shmi supplied.
Owen laughed. “I’m sure it’s safe for him, but others around him may faint from shock.”
Beru quietly let out a sigh of relief and laughed with the others.
“Honestly, though, Mik is more serious than he lets on in front of most others, especially crowds,” Owen added as he started drying the dishes that the women had washed. He shrugged, “He just doesn’t let his sober side show much.”
“Not even Mik can be so clownish all the time.” Cliegg then put hand on Owen’s shoulder. “Come on, son, let’s leave the women’s work,” he winked at Shmi and Beru to show he was not serious about the slight, “to the ladies, and go have a man-to-man talk.”
“I’d rather do women’s work as long as I can look at my beautiful bride to be.” Owen said as he caught Beru’s eye.
Beru’s heart leaped in her chest as she smiled up at him. She always felt breathless when he looked at her with his intense blue eyes.
“OK then,” Cliegg sidestepped over to hug Shmi from behind her. “Why don’t we let these two finish the dishes…” he whispered in her ear what they could do while Beru and Owen finished off kitchen duty.
Shmi blushed and smacked his hand. “Behave you dirty old man,” she scolded, though her voice held both amusement and desire. “It would be rude to go off and make our guest finish the dishes.”
“It’s alright, I don’t mind.” Beru smiled over at her. The two women’s eyes locked and understanding silently passed between them.
Shmi then looked at Owen. “I’ll make the bed in the guest room for Beru to settle in for tonight.”
Owen nodded, “OK.”
After Cliegg led his wife out into the courtyard, Beru and Owen continued washing the rest of the dishes.
“So,” Owen asked, “what were you really talking about?”
“Huh?” Beru looked up from the last plate she was rinsing.
“Right before Cliegg and I came back in. You and my mom weren’t talking about Mik, were you?” Beru’s guilty look confirmed his suspicion.
“No,” she said quietly and looked away from him.
“Was it about me?”
She nodded silently, still not looking at him. She was afraid to tell him what they were talking about, because she did not want to argue.
“What wouldn’t kill me?” Owen smiled at her, but the smile faded when she looked up at him with sad eyes. A feeling of dread came upon him. “What is it? Do you have second thoughts?”
“No! Oh, Owen,” she hugged him as she spoke, “I love you.”
Returning her embrace, he frowned in puzzlement. “What is it then?”
Pulling away slightly so she could look up at him, Beru confessed. “We were talking about you not wanting to wear an urusai suit.”
“Oh,” he sighed with relief. “Well I still don’t want to.”
She smiled at the petulance in Owen’s voice. She was not quite sure why, but his boyishness endeared itself to her. “I didn’t say you had to.”
“Well, I won’t.” His voice rose slightly.
“Why?”
“Because it’s stupid,” Owen exclaimed as he pulled away from Beru.
“No it isn’t! You’d look handsome in it.”
“More like foolish! I’d rather wear a clown suit… that way I’d at least have my face covered in makeup.” He took the last dish she had rinsed, dried it and put it in the cupboard.
“Owen, I’m sorry, I don’t want to fight.” Tears filled Beru’s eyes.
Owen turned to look at her. “Hey,” his voice lowered into a soothing tone as he reached out to her. Embracing her, he whispered, “I’m sorry.” He kissed the top of her head. “I’ll wear anything else you want me to. I’ll even go naked if you want.” He became alarmed as she buried her head in his tunic and her body shook. “Please, don’t cry, Beru!”
Beru pulled away enough to look up at him, and Owen realized she was not crying after all, but laughing. “What’s so funny?” He could not help but laugh as well, even though he was not in on the joke yet. He was just relieved she was not crying.
As soon as she was able to stop laughing, Beru blushed slightly as she confessed. “Well, when I started laughing earlier… during the meal… it didn’t have anything to do with Mik and his antics at the wedding.”
“What was it then?”
Beru covered her cheeks in her hand as she blushed more in embarrassment. She looked away from him as she answered. “Well, I was just thinking that the important thing was that we get married in front of our families, and that I didn’t care what you wore, as long as you wore something… and then I had an image of you saying your vows in front of everyone in your birthday suit.”
Owen’s mouth hung open, and then as a still blushing Beru looked up at him, a smile played at the corners of his lips. “So, how did I look?”
“What do you mean?”
“How did I look in my birthday suit?” He clarified with a wink as he took her hands in his.
Beru could hardly breathe as she looked into his eyes and whispered, “Beautiful.”
“Beautiful,” he exclaimed in disbelief. “Beautiful? I hoped I’d be at least manly.”
Beru giggled as she blushed some more. “Beautiful in a manly way,” she amended.
“That’s better, I guess.” He said as he pulled her to him and whispered in her ear. “I hope you won’t be disappointed when you see the real thing.”
“Never,” she whispered before they kissed. She brought one of his hands up so he could feel her heart beating rapidly.
Breaking the kiss, Owen looked into Beru’s eyes. As one, they turned and walked in silence to her room.
Disaster strikes next...
