Title: So He Can Be Saved
Author: brodiew
Genre: spy story
Timeframe: Post ROTS AU
Characters: Mace Windu, Mara Jade
Summary: A secret meeting for an odd purpose.
Challenge 23:
Mara Jade and Mace Windu :: supply closet :: redemption
Supply Closet
1 Senate Plaza
Invisible Force energy radiated between them. Neither moved. It was a paralysis of sorts; each in a fighting stance, looking for a point of weakness, but neither having drawn their blades.
“How long are we going to do this?” Mace Windu said, cocking his head to the left. “I thought this was a peaceful meeting.”
“Peaceful doesn’t mean stupid, Windu?” Mara Jade replied, arching an eyebrow.
“You are younger than I expected. I was sure that Palpatine had more…seasoned assistants. It is interesting, though, that we were not aware of you before he was.”
“Life’s rough,” she replied, curtly, taking a half step to the right. The space was small, but not cramped.
“Interesting move,” Windu said, countering the step to his left, leaving them, again, at an impasse. “You are a lovely girl, but I weary of this staring contest. What is it that we so desperately need to know?”
Mara relaxed and lowered her hands. Mace did the same.
“See that wasn’t so hard,” he said, keeping his senses heightened in the Force for any sudden movement.
“Harder that you know,” she replied, pulling a data chip from her belt. “The information you’ll need is there. The Emperor planned to kill you all. He had the clones programmed with a special directive. That plan was foiled, the means by which you don’t need to know.”
“Why are you doing this?” Mace asked, still not sure he trusted one of Palpatine’s personal aides.
“Your need to know is getting smaller, Master Jedi,” Mara replied, already knowing she would need to tell the Jedi the truth.
“Motive is very important in a transaction like this, young woman,” Mace said, seriously. “Why makes all the difference.”
Mara bit her lip, but was not nervous. The meeting was taking too long, but she suddenly found herself wanting to tell Windu what he wanted to know.
“A Jedi named Anakin Skywalker helped me once. I was a child, but when my parents were killed in battle, he saved me. He got me to the safety of a refugee camp. He made the enemy pay for what they did.”
Mace grimaced at the name Skywalker. He never liked the man, but it did not good to think ill of the dead.
“You are still a child and Skywalker is dead,” he declared. “How does that affect the present?”
“It affects me!” she said through gritted teeth. “Kriffin’ Jedi.”
“My apologies, Miss,” Windu said, softly. “That was inappropriate. These are hard times. Skywalker was a strong Jedi, if impulsive, paranoid, and, ultimately, deluded. His death was a tragedy.”
“Don’t be so sure,” she sneered, reflexively. “That very assurance has cost your order many lives. The Emperor has a hunter; a mad dog set on the Jedi to kill them one by one.”
Windu was taken aback, though he did not let it show. Obi-Wan had returned with Anakin’s lightsaber. He was sure that Anakin had was dead.
“Are you talking about Lord Vader?” Windu asked, directly.
“Very perceptive, Master Windu,” she said as if talking to a child, “There is hope for you yet.”
“I don’t take kindly too young whelps talking to me in that manner,” he stated, his face hardening. “Are you saying Vader is Skywalker?”
Mara nodded once.
Mace’s expression changed very little, but Mara could see the pain of the news dawn on him. His mouth hardened into a line.
“Come with me,” he said. “We will protect you.”
A caustic laugh escaped her lips.
“No, Master Windu. That would not do at all. The only reason this meeting has occurred is because the information on the chip may help save Skywalker and bring down the Emperor. I can take care of myself.”
“You, too, can be saved,” he said.
“My concern is Skywalker. I’ve done things…”
“So has he.”
He looked into her emerald green eyes.
She looked back.
“Perhaps, when Palpatine is gone.”
She was out the door and down the hall in an instant. Windu waited a few moments and exited the supply room. He hoped, for her sake, that Skywalker could be saved.

Yikes! Page 3 and not one response. For that kind of response this has to be sub par. I acknowledge that this is random, but I didn't it was that bad.
Feedback is appreciated.

Well, I thought it was fantastic! Very well done, brodie!
P.S. Any chance of "Rude Awakening" being updated soon? I love that story!

That was really cool! You did a great job with the challenge elements.
“You, too, can be saved,” he said.
“My concern is Skywalker. I’ve done things…”
“So has he.”
Loved that part. Excellent work, brodiew!

I'm impressed Mace was willing to protect Mara. He must have felt the good in her.
I certainly hope Anakin is still capable of being saved....
Great response to the challenge

Very nice brodiew.
But you do know that you wrote something that cries out for more of this story...
“Harder that you know,” she replied, pulling a data chip from her belt. “The information you’ll need is there. The Emperor planned to kill you all. He had the clones programmed with a special directive. That plan was foiled, the means by which you don’t need to know.”
That would be an interesting story to read. Mara screwing with Order 66. I'm just saying.
