Wow. Nice. The Jedi seems a little inexperienced, good to see the clones helping him.
Thx for the PM!

Sorry, the holidays have kept me from reading but now I've caught up.

I liked your introduction of the CIS General Rellin. He sticks out in two ways, a) because he's a human in the (mostly) alien run CIS and b) he seemed to be a man of honour which you don't see often when it comes to the CIS, unfortunately. He seems to be a very interesting character and I can't wait to see more of him.

I also liked the fact that you portrayed both sides preparing for the battle, one defensively and one offensively. I think my favourite moment of the previous chapter was the Clone that comforted Jorec. That was a nice reversal of roles.

And onto the latest update and the battle has started and what a start it was. I liked the introduction of Lekine and that we found out his opinions concerning clones. I wonder if this will play any importance further on down the road, possibly during Order 66? thinking The details of the battle through the eyes of Jorec were rendered greatly. I liked the description you gave of how it felt to deflect laser bolts. Very good.

applause

Great battle--loved the Jedi/Clone interaction and cooperation against the Confederacy.

Thanks a lot. I enjoyed crafting the various relationships between characters both clone and non-clone.

Wow, this is an awesome start to the battle. I really like your descriptions of the Jedi and clones.

I'm glad that that came out well.

The real amazing part of this was to write a ~2,000 word chapter out of something that was originally ~700. I hope that I expanded it well without providing too many inconsitencies.

The Jedi seems a little inexperienced, good to see the clones helping him.

Well, he is only 13... I liked having the clones help him, especially with certain events that are in the near horizon.

Sorry, the holidays have kept me from reading but now I've caught up.

If you think your reading schedule has been off track, you should see my writing one... :P

Rellin was created because I wanted to show the CIS perspective and didn't want to have the only major perspective on that side be a combat droid. Nothing against that, I loved OOM-9 in Galactic Battlegrounds, but I needed something a little more. His humanity, species-wise, was put in there just to be a little different. His humanity in the other way was there to show that those that fought on the CIS side weren't necessarily monsters.

I also liked the fact that you portrayed both sides preparing for the battle, one defensively and one offensively.

Thanks. I felt that was needed, personally.

And onto the latest update and the battle has started and what a start it was. I liked the introduction of Lekine and that we found out his opinions concerning clones. I wonder if this will play any importance further on down the road, possibly during Order 66?

I has played a role, but not concerning Order 66, in the past. It will have other implications in the story, however.

I liked the description you gave of how it felt to deflect laser bolts. Very good.

We've all seen and read about Jedi easily plucking a bolt out of the sky, but what about the inexperienced ones? That was the question that inspired that scene. I wanted to show that Jorec's not fully trained once again.

The Battle of Selvernos
Part Six

Day One

Separatist Base 1734 hours

Tohm Rellin cursed as he looked over the recently updated tactical map of the planet. The minor base and mining operation on the other side of the planet had been quickly taken by the Republic forces. The holographic map shimmered slightly, changing from a translucent image of the entire war theater to a political map as it did. The CIS controlled areas were covered in a deep red, blanketing a majority of the planet. The Republic forces were blue, and consisted of far too many small dots on the landscape for Tohm’s place.

The worst of it all was the not-so-small spot between Gevest and the base. It was obvious that they were going to make an attempt to liberate the occupied city while cutting off the main reinforcements. He swiveled his chair to the computer next to him, quickly checking his force’s database. He knew the commander of the region, but not the comm code. He took a sip out of the caf cup in his right hand, luxuriating in the warm liquid’s taste and in the stimulation that it provided.

“OOM-1984 reporting,” the droid commander stated as the planet shrunk to a manageable size, the large image in the room being replaced by the command droid’s ovoid head. “Your orders, General Rellin?”

Tohm remained silent for just a second, wondering why Grievous, Dooku, and even the mysterious being known as Sidious demanded that most holoprojectors in command rooms be set to show the other person in gigantic proportions. It probably had something to with the top brass wanting to intimidate the lesser commanders. “No orders right now, Eighty-Four,” Tohm began. “I’m just wondering if you managed to get to Gevest before the Republic landed.”

“We arrived approximately 0.5 hours before hostilities began,” the droid reported. My escort group suffered zero casualties.”

“Good to hear,” Rellin replied. “How are things there? The local populace?”

“We have suspended the local media and recommend that the policy be extended to the entire planet, though there is little doubt that the Republic will be able to set up a pirate broadcast that will be received by all that find it.”

“That type of operation requires a transmitter as well as journalists to run,” Rellin added. “I’m sending an order to stop any similar action to all troops.”

“A wise strategy,” OOM-1984 said. “The checkpoints in Gevest proper have been reinforced with an additional three super battle droids. In addition,” Eighty-Four added, “we have eliminated the randomness of the searches. Every landspeeder occupant must display the proper credentials and submit to a search of the vehicle. Failure to do so will result in incarceration.”

“I know the procedure,” Tohm said. “Good job.”

“I hope that you don’t mind, sir, but I’ve already forwarded the suggestion to the others.”

“I don’t,” Tohm replied. “Good work.”

“Keep on alert,” Rellin added. “I’ve got a good hunch that they’re planning on liberating Gevest soon, and I want you to keep your troops alert.”

“Will do, sir,” the command droid replied.

Republic Venator-class Star Destroyer Tarsus Valorum.

Admiral Lekine watched as the space battle continued through the viewport. It was subdued at this point, both sides conserving as many resources as they could, as well as allowing their own ships to be repaired. The occasional sortie was sent out by both sides, an attempt to stop this cycle, but to no real success. Even now, he watched as a Carrack-class vessel and a squadron of V-wings harassed the enemy front, only to retreat seconds later to be replaced by a Dreadnaught.

“Admiral,” Galen Wintlas said as he walked into the room. “You wished to see me?”

“Yes, the admiral replied, “though I think that—at the moment—we can dispense with the pleasantries of rank. How are you doing, my boy?”

“I’m doing fine,” Galen answered. Years ago, after the Stark Hyperspace Conflict, Marcus had married Galen’s mother. His stepfather’s military career had helped influence him to enter as well. Even his half brother, just a few years old, had daydreams of being in the Republic Navy.

“Let’s get to the real reason I called you here,” Admiral Lekine said, “though it would be good to catch up on how we’re all doing. I’ve heard that you have experience piloting LAATs?”

“Yes. I received my certification two years ago. About four months after Geonosis. Never had to use it, though, save for simulated runs.”

“One of the pilots was killed earlier today after making a combat drop, and we’re down many now. I need you to start piloting one.”

“That’s fine by me,” Galen replied. “When do I start?”

“Tomorrow you’ll pilot a group of technicians down as we start sending in the prefab structures. From then on, you’ll be assigned to the main task force.”

Selvernos’ two moons shone dimly through the cloud cover, making almost anything hard to see with the naked eye. Trem stalked through the forest about three kilometers west of the temporary camp that the Republic forces had set up, his helmet showing the entire world in nightvision green. The heat of the day before was rapidly approaching the standard “room temperature”, making the clone trooper wish that for one second he could take his helmet off and enjoy the cool breeze over his sweaty head. He couldn’t, though. Not while he was still on duty.

He motioned to the other eight soldiers in his squad, maintaining the radio silence that was ordered upon him by Commander Hal. He could see a battle droid up ahead, the heat radiating off of their metallic bodies showing up vividly through his HUD. Another one joined it, and Trem motioned towards his squad, letting them know exactly how many enemies were there.

Trem aimed his blaster rifle and squeezed off a shot, hitting the first droid in the neck. The other droid was soon joined by others, each of them firing towards the spot where the blaster shot had came from. The infrared sensors in the helmets of the clone troopers burned bright as blaster fire erupted. Leaves burned and small trees burst as the shots hit them, as did the droids.

The clone lieutenant looked at the mangled and melted metal of the disabled droids before scanning the forests for any more. There were none that he could see. Finally, he could break communications silence. “Main base, this is Trem. Area secured.”

The Battle of Selvernos
Part Seven

Day Two

Milcan lay prone on hill overgrown with weeds, his white and red armor wrapped in a brownish green cloth to prevent the reflection of the morning sun from giving his position away. He peered through a pair of small macrobinoculars towards the large city over a kilometer away. The city was Gevest, capital municipality of Selvernos and the one with the planet’s largest population.

Large buildings sprang from the middle of the city, several stories in height, brushing against a few very low-hanging clouds. There was no airspeeder traffic to be seen, even though there were obvious signs that skylanes existed. Most of the traffic that did exist, Milcan could see from scanning the area, was in the form of ground-based landspeeders. Perhaps a control measure installed by the Separatists, he surmised. A six lane expressway appeared to circumnavigate the city, branching off at various points to lead to other cities and towns.

Milcan zoomed in on one of these intersections, noticing the slightly unusual structure that had been built there. It was made out of durasteel, a small transmitter tower attached to the very top. Even smaller emplacements were situated across the road, a strong durasteel beam cutting the road in half. He zoomed in even closer, watching as a small landspeeder slowed to a halt before the structure. Three battle droids, blaster rifles held close to their metallic bodies, made their way out of the main building. One of the droids approached the driver’s side of the vehicle and held his empty hand out.

Inside, the man driving the landspeeder searched for something for a few seconds, his wife and teenaged daughter looking on. The driver presented what appeared to be a card to the battle droid. The item was scanned. The other two droids walked towards the back of the landspeeder and opened the rear storage, where they rifled through the bags of groceries that had just been purchased. Apparently convinced that no contraband was hidden, the family was waved through the barricade.

Two hours later, a holographic map of Gevest was projected in the war room of the half constructed Republic base. The majority of the room was already furnished, due to the importance, but insulated wires hang from support beams like serpents, snaking up to the ceiling. The majority of the planet’s command structure was there, each of them with some semblance of a plan to retake the metropolis.

“In my observation of the city, they appear to have set up some major anti-aircraft artillery here,” Milcan said as the ARC trooper motioned to various places on the map of Gevest. “An air assault will be rather difficult, and would result in the loss of many lives. I also believe that many civilians could die unnecessarily in the assault.”

“An air assault is out then,” Merrick Fionst said, his arms folded across his chest. “And I doubt that we can use the AT-TEs to any real advantage in the city as well.”

“We still have the smaller walkers, General Fionst,” Commander Hal reminded the Jedi. “They can easily navigate and operate efficiently in an urban combat environment.”

The numerous other clone leaders nodded in agreement, one even suggesting that a Juggernaut could be used on the main expressways.

“We’ll be broadcasting instructions to both the citizens and the resistance groups inside of Gevest via our pirate holoband,” Hal said, standing up from his seat and taking a position in the center of the room. “We should move on the city by the afternoon,” he continued. “I’m thinking that we should assign Aurek Regiment to the job, with me and General Fionst leading.” The suggestion got a murmur of acceptance from the other clone leaders.

“Do you need my help, Commander, General?” Milcan asked as the meeting dismissed. The ARC trooper walked briskly beside his two superiors.

“More than likely,” Merrick answered. “Besides, of all of us, you’re the one that’s actually seen the city with your actual eyes.”

“I’ll have you stationed with Trem’s platoon,” Hal said. “I’m thinking of having them enter the south end of the town on one of our Juggernauts,” the clone commander said.

“Seems like a good plan,” Merrick agreed. “Let’s fine tune it a bit…”

Eight Hour Later

The late evening sun was an hour away from setting, casting an orangish glow across the sky. Selvernos’ two moons were already in the sky, the silver dust reflecting brilliantly across the slowly darkening sky. Milcan watched the large Juggernaut power its way through the forest, driving right over the smaller trees, waiting. In about a minute, the driver reported, and they would burst through the treeline and towards the open fields to Gevest. The ARC trooper nodded his goodbyes to the drivers of the massive and wheeled weapon of warfare and headed towards the troop hold. There, he took a seat next to Lieutenant Trem.

The crashing sounds outside of the wheeled vehicle stopped as soon as Milcan took his seat, letting everyone in the Juggernaut know that they were now in the open. The sound of mortar explosions soon replaced the sound of cracking trees as the Separatists opened fire upon them. Right now, Milcan thought, numerous other turbo tanks were doing the exact same thing.

The Juggernaut shuddered very slightly as rockets were fired from the vehicle, hitting the top floor of a building filled with rocket wielding droids. The majority of the civilians in the town had gotten the word of the invasion through the bootleg broadcasts that the Republic had done, allowing them to prepare. Unfortunately, it was obvious that the Separatists had listened in as well.

The tank skidded to a halt, the doors opened. Trem, Milcan and the other clone troopers raced out of the doors. Small arms fire hit the Juggernaut, the tough durasteel hull absorbing it completely. The long battle had begun in earnest…

The Battle of Selvernos
Part Eight

Hal fired off three shots towards the third story window as he raced towards the underground rail station that served as a temporary battlement for the Republic troops. Soon after being dropped off three kilometers into Gevest, droids wielding blaster cannons took out both control centers of the massive Juggernaut that had ferried the Republic troops into battle, leaving the giant vehicle a burning husk in the middle of the street. General Fionst had then gone all Jedi and had leapt from a low building up onto the top of the vehicle, and then jumped to the roof. Every so often, a clone trooper could see the bisected remains of a droid fly out of a window, its torso still red-hot.

‘Jedi…’ Hal thought with a chuckle as he fired a shot at a sniper, taking the sharp-sensored droid’s head off. ‘Always looking for a chance to show off…’

Merrick Fionst closed his eyes and opened himself up to the Force as he hid behind the open door. From inside the room, he could hear at least four, but no more than ten, battle droids firing towards the street. The building had perhaps a platoon of B1 battle droids stationed in it, and had already cleared out the very top floor. The advantage of surprise was now mostly gone, having disappeared as soon as he took out the first group of battle droids. Now, they knew that someone was in the building and were adjusting their audio sensors accordingly. For all he knew, the droids in the next room already knew that he was there.

The droids were still shooting, though. That was a good sign. His breath evened out, his thumb twitched on the activation plate of his lightsaber. This level was the most dangerous to the clones out on the street below, for all of the blaster cannon shots that had been fired on the clones below had come from this floor.

He snuck a peek into the room, seeing five battle droids perched over a broken window, firing their blaster rifles into the street below. Another droid paraded around the window, a blaster cannon being held in both of its arms, waiting for a chance to strike out at the clones below.

Wishing he had a grenade, Merrick ignited his lightsaber and rushed into the room. He reached out and pushed the droids nearest the window using the Force, forcing the still functioning droids to tumble to the ground below, leaving two remaining. The one carrying a blaster rifle fired off a shot at the Jedi, the green blade intercepting the attack and redirecting it towards the droid with the blaster cannon. That droid toppled to the ground, sparks flying from its midsection. The droid wielding the rifle aimed again, but found its arms missing before it could pull the trigger. A simple push of Merrick’s hand sent the droid falling to the street below.

“The cannon’s been taken out,” Merrick reported to the clones below via his comlink.

“Glad to hear it,” Hal replied. “It was getting pretty annoying.”

Merrick wiped the sweat off of his brow with his sleeve and extinguished his lightsaber. “Same here,” he added.

***

Ten kilometers away, on a different section of Gevest, OOM-1984 led his columned troops into battle. The arrival of the clone troopers had stirred up local resistance groups that had previously been put down by the Separatists in the previous weeks. Groups that were intimidated into submission had now gotten their courage back with the site of white-armored troops making an attempt to “liberate” their planet. Little did these people know that the second that the ore was mined or the war was over, they would leave the planet and let them go about in their own way? Non-robotics were simply too emotional, the command droid thought to himself.

A group of these rebels had been supplied with DC-15s by a group of clone troopers that had “coincidentally” dropped by the neighborhood. Even though they had never used the military hardware before, their previous blaster experiences being with civilian models or older military ones, they had begun to cause a relatively large amount of damage. Reports were filtering in from battle droids already in the field that they had retaken a large square dedicated to a local hero of the Mandalorian War, firing at any collaborator police squad that had tried to end the event as soon as it begun.

“Begin tactical program 13,” OOM-1984 ordered his troops as the square became visible in his optical sensors. A millisecond after he had finished his order, the group split into three, two thirds of the battle droids flanking the middle third on both sides. The group of battle droids marched steadily, keeping their sensors locked on the area behind three burned out landspeeders. The rebels were behind those landspeeders, that much was true.

The blue blaster bolt coming from that area confirmed it, the shot going wide and hitting the side of a building twelve meters behind the droids. “Keep marching,” OOM-1984 ordered, knowing that until they had walked about twenty more meters the blaster fire would be ineffective. The civilians did not know this, however, and continued to fire. The fire stopped seconds later, however, bringing the battle ground to a strange silence. “Open fire!” the command droid exclaimed as they reached their weapons’ effective range.

Thirty resistance fighters were gathered in the plaza, all of them falling back as the battle droids entered. The command droid watched as two of them fell to his carbine, the rest of his group being slightly ineffective at the moment. One more fell, this one thanks to a member of the left third. Three resistance casualties to their one, 1984 thought, not a very bad statistic at the moment.

The blue fire coming toward them expanded in an instant, all of a sudden erupting from at least three places above and around them. “Ambush!” the command droid cried out as several of his soldiers fell to the pinpoint blaster fire. It was obvious that they had been led into a trap perpetrated by the clone troopers. “Fall back!”

The command droid fired at where he believed the clone troopers were, not hitting anything but glass windows and brick. Then he saw a red armored figure standing out against the surroundings. In this clone’s hands was a different sort of gun, one that was recognizable to the droid: ARC trooper… If he had been programmed to ever feel fear, OOM-1984 would be basking in it. He had seen the type of damage that an ARC trooper could do years ago on Fumine; when seven of them had decimated an entire group of droids with their tactics. Four of them were killed, but you wouldn’t have known it.

He uploaded a visual of the ARC trooper to every single one of the troops under his command. “Exterminate!” he cried out in a shrill voice. Over 70 blaster rifles raised to aim at the ARC trooper and fired, hitting nothing as the well-trained soldier swiftly moved out of the way before they fired.

Milcan breathed deeply as the blaster fire shredded the brick wall that he was taking cover against, holding his blaster rifle tight against his chest. He fired blindly in their direction for a second before stopping, knowing that he was only wasting ammo. Outside, the resistance began to take their toll on the target blind droids, forcing them to finally abandon their quest to kill the ARC trooper. Finally sensing that the battle was no longer concentrated on him, the ARC trooper swung around towards the window. Aiming his blaster rifle at the throng of retreating droids, he fired.

Injury sensors flared in OOM-1984’s mechanical head as the blaster bolt hit his left shoulder. The impact of the blast spun him around in an instant, overloading his gyroscopic sensors and causing him to crash unceremoniously to the road. As his mind came to, he realized that he was missing an arm. The destroyed appendage lay uselessly on the road, still clutching the blaster carbine. “Retreat!” the injured droid cried out, not wanting to waste any more droids at this time. “Retreat!”
