Yeah,
long live the Empire
. The same Empire that busies itself by making the planet-destroying super space station in question.
The same Empire, by the way, that blames the testing of it's space staion on the very people wanting to put a stop to the Emperor's evil deeds. Convenient, eh? And what a convenient missfire it was. The space station's planet-killing beam just
happened
to be pointing at a planet. An innocent planet.
Nice update,

Meredith_Kenobi:
I absolutely agree (-; *is a bit astonished at the long text
*. Welll, but they
did
finish him off in the end- the Emperor I mean. Thanks for the review!
Chapter seven
Beth opened the door to the office rooms, momentarily pausing.
She had managed to persuade her brother to let the boy stay, but it had been a tough fight.
A wonderful pair of siblings, aren’t we?
Beth finally stepped through and closed the door behind her.
The child was nowhere to be seen- the bed, where they had placed it, was empty.
She looked under the tables, even in the cupboard.
Silly girl
she scolded herself,
the boy doesn’t consist of elastic gum!
Finally she looked in the refresher station and jumped back startled, because a pair of very alive and vibrant blue eyes watched her every move.
She saw, that he was holding a paper weight in his left hand.
“Put that down, boy.”
“Who are you? “ he demanded. “And why are you locking me in here?”
“We are the smallest Imperial base in Curamelle, which is the capital of Corulag.”
“I asked who you are, not where we are. I know already what you have told me.”
“Of course you do,” she said and searched his face for a weakness, that she could use against him. “As for me, my name is Lieutenant Bethany Stone, but you can call me Beth, if you want to.And we haven’t locked you in here, you were unconscious, and I came to check on you again."
The boy stared at her warily and she wondered about how much energy he seemed to possess and how much willpower, to hold his own against an adult.
She wondered, if she would have been able to show so much courage in his age.
“And what will you do to me now?”
Beth laughed, she didn’t even have to fake it.
So he wasn’t as stubborn and tough, as she had thought him to be.
His question was born out of the natural human need for knowledge and she had heard the childlike curiosity in his question too, this wild imagination of princesses and bad dragons, that all children seemed to possess.
“We won’t lock you in the dungeons, if you ask that” she answered finally, not having noticed how the boy’s eyes had narrowed, when she had laughed.
“You are welcome to stay here with us, if you want to, since…current circumstances have made it impossible for you to return to your planet.”
She noticed his wince.
“And why are you doing this?” the boy asked quietly.
Sith.
She had underestimated him again.
“Are you always that suspicious?”
The boy shook his pale head.
“My brother Tycho told me, that the people are greedy and look only for their own needs.”
Tycho
she thought.
Interesting. He seems to admire his elder brother, the one, who has defected to the Rebel Alliance.
“Well I am not,“she said aloud and pondered silently, whether she was lying now or not.
She had always wished to have a child, but she hadn’t ever been one of the lucky ones.
The arguments, that she had told her brother, had been invented out of the need, to find some reasons for him so he would allow the boy to stay.
She wondered, how much she supported these arguments.
Seeing him stand there now, this boy, who had landed so unexpected here in their midst, clad in his long trousers and the light green tunic with the blond hair and the intense, big, questioning blue eyes, she felt something else rise up in her.
It was a strange emotion, an unexpected feeling.
So she crouched down to his eye level and looked him straight in the eye.
“Really not,“she told him earnestly. “And drop that paper weight. You don’t want to rip your own arm out, now, do you?”
Her reward was a tiny smile pulling at the corners of his mouth and he slowly put the paperweight down, caution still in his eyes.
“So, that’s better.” She offered him her hand, but he refused to take it.
“So, come on now. You are hungry, I bet?”
A tiny nod.
“I thought so” Beth smiled and led the way out of the office, through the long, grey corridor, that led to the officers’ mess hall.

Yayz, an update!
Maybe Beth will find herself becoming attached to Skoloc. I hope not. *chews fingernails* I don't trust her as far as I can throw her.
Thanks for the PM,

RE: Shadow Bird (Tycho Celchu's brother Skoloc survives Alderaan and lands on an Imperial world, AU)
Meredith_Kenobi:
Glad to see you're still here!
You'll see- but Beth's brother is even worse than her...
I hope you like the chapter.
Chapter eight
Skoloc followed the woman warily. Her shoulders were stiff and her whole posture rigid.
He wasn’t sure, if he could trust her. She had been only kind so far, that was true, and she had let him out of the uncomfortable office, but still, what about that argument, he had heard a part of?
He studied her secretly. She was old, maybe not as old as Mother was…had been, but still old. Skoloc gulped again and wished, the pain would go away.
She had her curly locks in a ponytail today and the grey eyes were full of warmth, so unlike yesterday, when she had looked strict and unforgiving at him.
She was in uniform again and her steps were quick and militaristic.
Suddenly someone called behind them: “Beth!”
Skoloc saw, how the woman went more rigid still.
Finally she turned around and the smile on her face was as fake as her friendly manner.
“Brother! How nice to see you!”
Skoloc took a closer look at the approaching man: suddenly it hit him.
The man was the Imperial from the counter, the one with the harsh eyes and the loud voice.
Beth turned around to him and Skoloc liked her suddenly a lot better, compared to that strict brother.
“Skoloc, this is my brother, Gerald Orent. Gerald, you have already met Skoloc.”
The Imperial didn’t smile. He nodded curtly to Skoloc and grabbed the woman’s wrist, so hard, that it left an imprint.
“We need to talk, Lieutenant. Now.”
Skoloc had barely enough time to see fear flash up in Beth’s eyes, before they were ushered in a room.
Gerald rounded on them like a loose rancor.
“What in the Emperor’s name did you think to run around with him like that? What if someone had asked for the boy’s name, his identity, his reasons to be here?”
Beth was shaking. “I-I didn’t think.”
“Didn’t think!”he sneered. “Didn’t think! You never think, sister! Honestly, one might think, that you have the brains of a nerf! “
Beth had gone pale and stayed where she was, ashen against the white wall behind her.
Gerald spun on his heels and his black boots made a squelching sound.
Squelch-squelch. Skoloc held his breath.
“You boy,“Skoloc lifted his head and stared exhausted in the eyes of the Imperial, who was coming nearer.
“Yes,“he said.
“You aren’t Skoloc Celchu anymore, your name is Skol Donvar, you’re from Alderaan, and if someone asks, you’re the son of Beth’s deceased husband’s sister, and since we are the only living relatives of her, you were sent here after her death. Did you understand me, young man?”
“Yes sir,“Skoloc said.
“Good” the Imperial’s face was only inches away from his face.
Skoloc couldn’t hold it back, it just slipped over his tongue:
“I think, you need to brush your teeth, sir. Your breath smells funny.”
Mere seconds after he had said that, he looked in horrified fascination to the Imperial’s face, which was getting redder and redder.
When his eyes were almost bulging out of his head and a little vein on his forehead started to pound, Beth dragged Skoloc out the room.
They could hear the angry scream even after they had rounded the next corner.
Beth pulled him in an empty storage room.
“What did you do that for?”she hissed and her eyes were hard like emeralds.
Skoloc didn’t answer. Then she raised her hand as if to strike him.
Skoloc backed away and she let her hand sink, defeated.
“Why did you do it?” she asked wearily.
“You are afraid of him, Madam. And you weren’t pleased with the way he treated you.
Neither was I with the way he treated me.”
Beth didn’t do anything. She just stared at him for a while, neither defending her brother’s honour, nor backing him up in his accusations.
The only thing, that escaped her lips, was a weary sigh.
“Come on, Mr.Donvar. Let’s get something to eat.”
Skoloc trudged after her. Her shoulders were hanging down.

Okay...so yeah. I think Beth's brother is definitely the worse of the two evils.
Poor Skoloc, this is not a good situation for him to be in. Hopefully he uses his head wisely and figurtes out a way to get out of it.
Good to see this one updated,

Chapter nine
When Skoloc woke up at the first morning in a strange, big bed, he was first horribly disoriented.
In that house, it didn't smell like home.
Home smelt of red roses, of wild flowers and of the mild summer nights, of hot slab stones and fresh juice cocktails.
Home smelt of Mum, of fresh bread and a warm smile, and it smelt of Dad, of summer wind and comforting hugs.
Home smelt of Mia, of perfum and fresh laughter, and home also smelt of Tycho, of metallic ship parts and of wild adventure, of sadness and joy.
Here-Skoloc didn't open his eyes but he sniffed carefully.
Here-it smelt of nothing. It smelt of hidden sadness, of carefully chosen words, of awkwardness, of grey walls and grey lives.
He buried his head in his pillow and thought about never waking up again.
"Good morning, Sleepyhead!"
A woman came in the room and Skoloc wondered, why always, when he felt a little dramatic, someone came in, and destroyed his illusions of acting like a holo star.
Beth he thought, when he looked at her more closely and suddenly he recalled the last three days’s events and felt tears spring to his eyes.
A tear slid down his face and he caught it with his fingertips.
"No one cries in my home, boy," a voice behind him boomed loudly and Skoloc winced.
It was the big Imperial from earlier, Beth's brother.
How had she called him? Gerald Orent.
Skoloc quickly wiped his belligerent tears away.
"Yes sir," he said quickly and tried to sound as emotionless as possible.
Orent continued. "Do you still remember your name, boy?"
Skoloc stared at him, surprised.
His name..."Skoloc Ce-"
"No boy!" Beth at the window paled, when Gerald shouted.
"S-Skol Donvar."
"Good. Now come down, my sister has prepared breakfast."
Skoloc obediently trudged after the Imperial.
Breakfast was awkward, full of shy glances on his behalf and strict, controlled movements on Gerald Orent's behalf.
Beth however sent him kind glances from time to time, but she quickly looked away, when Skoloc looked at her.
Suddenly, Orent started to speak.
"You will address me as "sir" when living in this household. Is that understood?"
"Yes,sir."
"You can spend your day at the base today. Beth will show you around. Clear?"
"Crystal, sir."
After breakfast, Beth took his arm and led him to a little room next to the dining room.
She held some clothes out to him, which he took.
They were made for a boy of his age.
"Sorry, Beth!" he called and she turned around.
"Whose clothes are that?"
For a moment, she looked, as if she wouldn't answer, then she said:
"They were my little brother's."
Quickly, she closed the door, but no before Skoloc had seen the brightness in her eyes.
So...that is the reason, why she wants to keep me here,
he mused.
I can't stay here in this house! I will go mad! But where will I go?
I don't know anyone on this planet...and home...I can't go home anymore.
Despair welled up in the little boy and he sobbed quietly, all the while muffling his sobs and repeating like a mantra:
"I may not cry...I may not cry...I may not cry...I may not cry..."
He was taken aback again, when someone knocked on the door.
"Are you ready, Skol?"
Beth. And she had called him Skol. Like his siblings used to do.
Siblings.
Unexpected hope rose up in him again.
Siblings.
Tycho! Tycho will help me! Tych will save me! I only have to contact him!
My bro is a good Imperial and he is of legal age, so Orent cannot refuse to hand me over to him!
"Sure," he called back and opened the door, smiling widely.
"Beth, is your brother still here?"
"No, he left for work a while ago," Beth said, bemused.
"Never mind," he said, but hope was there for him yet again and with shining eyes he followed Beth out of the house, eager to learn the details of his prison.

RE: Shadow Bird (Tycho Celchu's brother Skoloc survives Alderaan and lands on an Imperial world, AU)
What is Skoloc going think when he finds out that Tycho has defected to the Rebels? That is going to make his chances of getting in touch with Tycho just that much more harder. What will Skoloc think of Tycho's defection? It has to be alot for a young boy raised to think the Empire is good to find out that they are resposible for the death of his family and the turning of his brother into a Rebel.
And what are Beth and her brother planning? Are they going to use Skoloc to lure Tycho into their clutches? Beth seems to be longing for a child of her own and Skoloc fits that hope.
Sorry I've not reviewed lately, Real Life has been a b...h.
As ususal, great story. Please update soon.

Hi! I'm here again, sorry for the long delay...
Demon28:
You will see what will happen
...poor Skoloc, that's right...Yes, Beth is quite alright...but her brother isn't so nice. Oh, I am sorry to hear that, though don't worry about not reviewing! ....I hope it has got better for you....I can understand having stress, though. School is awful- a test every second day- and to top all that, I am taking driving lessons right now. Oh, the joys of a car's clutch! I don't know how often I've managed to stall the engine by now (and I really don't want to know
) Thank you for reviewing! I wish you all the best.
Meredith_Kenobi:
Well, they say forgetfulness starts early...
.. Thank you for the review!!!
Greetings, Abeja
"Sure," he called back and opened the door, smiling widely.
"Beth, is your brother still here?"
"No, he left for work a while ago," Beth said, bemused.
"Never mind," he said, but hope was there for him yet again and with shining eyes he followed Beth out of the house, eager to learn the details of his prison.
Chapter ten
The house was small and sat in a row with other small houses. It took them only two minutes to get from the house to the base and Skoloc later learned that all those small houses belonged to the higher Imperial officers on Corulag. The common soldiers or lower-ranked officers all had rooms on base.
The tour of the base really didn’t last long, then Beth told him to get some food at the mess hall. “You must be starving again,“she said, with a worried frown on her face.
“You are far too thin.”
Skoloc smiled at her and startled, she smiled back.
Feeling much better, Skoloc rounded the corner and bumped in something large and they fell in a tangle of limbs and lunch tray to the floor.
Something human. An Imperial, Skoloc realised with a glance at the uniform.
You’re on an Imperial base, silly.
Skoloc silenced his inner voice quickly.
Quiet, you.
His counterpart groaned quietly on the floor and Skoloc concentrated on him.
It was a young man, obviously a junior officer.
He had to be his brother’s age, Skoloc realized and bent over the other.
“Sir, sir, are you alright? Sir, I am sorry...”
The officer didn’t even groan.
“Sir- are you still alive? Sir?”
Oh no. Skoloc leaned back. Did I hurt him?
“Is there any reason, why you are sitting there, with orange juice dripping down your head?”
an amused voice asked from the ground.
“Sir!” Skoloc quickly helped him up. “I am so sorry, I was walkingaroudnthecornerand-“
The Imperial held up a hand to stop him. “It’s okay. I think I get it. My question was, why you have orange juice running down your face?”
Still paralysed with shock, Skoloc only managed to say the first thing, that came to his mind.
“Uh…I didn’t plan it?”
The young officer stared at him, then he nearly bent double with the force of his laughter.
Skoloc wasn’t sure, if he should laugh or rather be insulted.
“Sorry, kid,“the officer smiled.
“Your answer was just rather funny. Normally, when one has orange juice on his head, he would wipe it off, but not you.”
Skoloc stared again. “Sure.”
“Hey, I didn’t want to offend you. Help me pick this up. Quick, please.”
Skoloc obeyed and when they were done and had put the food in a near trash unit, the Imperial smiled down at him.
“Now, will you join me?”
Don’t go with strangers. Nowhere.
That was one of the first things, that Mum had taught Skoloc and he had done his best to remember it, especially after recent happenings.
But if he hadn’t got on that freighter, he would…
Skoloc felt how tears prickled at the back of his eyes.
The Imperial seemed a little surprised and shocked, when he saw Skoloc’s expression.
“Don’t worry, I am not asking you to come to Kessel with me.
I just wanted to ask, if you would come to the refresher station with me.”
“For cleaning up” he added hesitantly.
“Okay.” Skoloc retorted, but he quickly added:”And my name is Skol Donvar, but you can call me Skol. Anything but kid.”
Now, the Imperial didn’t smile. He put his cap back on and pushed some belligerent strands of brown hair out of his eyes. “Good, Skol. Let’s get going then.”
Skoloc followed him. After some time, he asked timidly:
“How are you called, sir?”
The officer put his hand in front of his eyes.
“I didn’t tell you, did I?”
“No” Skoloc smiled and got the impression, that the man liked to act theatrical.
“Why- my mother would turn in her grave, is she knew about my lack of education!
My name is Stefan. Corporal Stefan Delmar, but everyone calls me Stef,so you can too.”
Skoloc liked him. There was something honest in his eyes and in his whole demeanour, even if he was something of a clown.
Strange, he hadn’t ever thought, that Imperials could behave any different than strict.
“Pleased to meet you,“he said and held out his hand.
tbc...so, what do you think of Stef?

Meredith_Kenobi:
Thank you very much for reviewing. It's been a long time, sorry for that, but DRL is really evil at the moment. I'll update more regularly now
Well, Trust is Skoloc's middle name ^^.
~Abeja~
"My name is Stefan. Corporal Stefan Delmar, but everyone calls me Stef,so you can too.”Skoloc liked him. There was something honest in his eyes and in his whole demeanour, even if he was something of a clown.
Strange, he hadn’t ever thought, that Imperials could behave any different than strict.
“Pleased to meet you,“he said and held out his hand.
Chapter eleven
The Imperial shook it heartily.
“So…how did you get here? Normally, there are no kids on the base, at least not in this part.”
They went farther, through a maze of similar-looking corridors and ended up in front of the refresher station.
Skoloc chose not to answer the question and he was glad, that Stef didn’t ask any further, displaying some silent sensitivity.
Instead he announced brightly: “Here we are. Welcome to the amazing, single, greatest and most wonderful refresher station in the whole ‘verse.”
Skoloc laughed:”Sure.”
“Don’t believe me? Look, there is that wonderful, amazing, big mirror”- Skoloc stared in a little, quadratic thing, that may have once resembled a mirror.
“-and this wonderful refresher”- two rather shabby wooden, old-fashioned doors.
Stef noticed his discomfort and smiled weakly, finally dropping the act.
“C’mon.”
Skoloc followed him, wary again, when he was dragged out of the base.
They were in a small alley, which was littered with trash and various items.
Skoloc wanted to go back in, but Stef held him back.
“Wait. I wanted to ask, do you know, where we are here?”
There was nothing but seriousness in his eyes, and so Skoloc simply shook his head, sensing, that Stef didn’t expect a geographical answer.
Stef laughed again, such a sad and bitter laugh, that Skoloc backed away.
“I wasn’t kidding earlier. If somewhere there is a heaven, then this is the farthest imaginable place from heaven. Sometimes we call it hell here.
This here” he made a vague hand motion “this is the base for all the wash-outs, that turn up in Imperial service. We aren’t mad, no” he said, when he noticed Skoloc’s surprised glance
“we are simply not perfectly Imperial. The Emperor wants perfection and nothing inbetween.
We have all done something wrong, like disobeying an order, because it was against our morale or cursing several times the name of the Emperor.
If you do that more than several times, you are put here. Here, on Corulag.
The whole world is strictly imperialistic. We would change our views here, or so we were told.”
Skoloc stared at him once more, then he whirled around and ran back inside.
Mad! That man is mad! I have to get out of here. I must find Tycho! I want to go, somewhere, where the people are normal and not so sad and crazy! Tycho!
He saw the door, where he had come out from earlier.
Skoloc ran in the base and through the base, out in the streets and the bright sunlight, running through narrow streets, until his feet were hurting.
Away from these mad people! He had to- had to- had to get to Tych!
But they caught him again and Skoloc expected awful things to happen, yet they never did.
Instead, Beth sat down with him, far away from Gerald’s watchful eyes.
“You met Corporal Delmar, didn’t you?”
When he nodded, she continued: “He is here, because he has disobeyed an order. That’s not a bad thing. He just has to learn to obey again.”
“But what if he is right?”
“Right with what?”
“That some orders are cruel and that you have to disobey.”
Beth didn’t respond to that statement. Instead she sighed.
“Skol, I know that you want to go home. I can understand that. But, dear, you can’t go home anymore. I am sorry to put it so bluntly, but it had to be said.
So I hope, that you will accept staying here, at least, until you’re of legal age.
I am a poor substitute for your mother and my brother is a violent, egoistical, half-crazed maniac” she laughed, when she saw his surprised face” yes, I know that he is far from perfect. But perhaps we can come to accept each other and perhaps you will get used to living here.
It isn’t as if we would imprison you here for the rest of your life.
In fact, I will take you outside tomorrow, if you want to. See the planet and all that.
Deal?”
She held out her hand, it was a fine, manicured hand with white nails, and Skoloc agreed finally. “Deal” he said and shook the hand.
“Good. Now come on, we are going home.”
“Is your brother coming too?”
“Gerald? Oh no” she said, looking as though she was hating herself for the relief in her words.
“He is out for some days, so we have them for ourselves.”
“Yes!” That had slipped him out again.
Guiltily, he looked at Beth. “I am sorry, Ma’am.”
“Beth” she told him again, smiling. “And don’t worry about it. Just don’t let him hear it.
He is not the most likeable of persons, and just a piece of advice, don’t trust him. Ever.
And stay away from him, when he’s home. He doesn’t like people crossing his path, when he’s working, trust me there.“
She put her arms around herself, and with that last remark, a somewhat uncomfortable silence descended upon them again.

Wonder if Stef can help Skoloc; he doen't seem to fit the Imperial mold. In fact, he would make an excellant Rebel.
Interesting that Beth doesn't trust her brother and has warned Skoloc not to cross him. Maybe she has Rebel thoughts....
Skoloc needs to be getting along and trying to find Tycho tho I wonder what his thoughts would be on finding that Tycho is not the perfect Imperial but a Rebel. Would Skoloc feel betrayed or will he realize that the Empire has destoryed all he knows and loves?
Nice update; another one please....

Huh, so many questions. You'll see, you'll see ^^And about Stefan...your thoughts are not bad.
Is school so terrible for you too, at the moment? (Ich glaub wir ham 6 schulaufgaben in den nächsten 4 Wochen!). And I feel like I could fall asleep all the time, I am sooo tired
Demon28:
Hi! Yes, yes, your thoughts about Stefan all go in the right direction. But you'll see (-; . About Beth...hmm...perhaps not Rebel thoughts, but that you will see, too.
Skoloc will find out quite soon, since I am planning to update more frequently now. Thank you so much for the review
And now a long chapter for you all- you deserve it for the long wait.
Chapter twelve
Part one
Time seemed to pass in a blur from then on.
Whenever Gerald wasn’t there- and that was very often the case- he spent time with Stef, laughing and joking, whenever Stef had some free time to spare.
When he was otherwise occupied, Skoloc would explore the narrow streets and little shops next to the base, but he didn’t go too far.
The thoughts of his big brother Tycho and how he could return to him, still nagged at him day and night though, but he hadn’t been allowed to use one of the Imperial computers yet.
So he looked for an opportunity to do so, and the opportunity came.
It was Monday, and Stef was busy working.
Skoloc had been on the base a little over four weeks now and when he was told to go to Lieutenant Stone’s office, he found the way easily enough.
Beth was sitting behind her desk, blond locks up in a tight bun and serious grey eyes studying some papers.
Skoloc hesitated, didn’t knock and studied the woman behind the desk surreptitiously again,
He still wasn’t sure what to think of her.
She was kind, when her brother was not, calm, funny and friendly, and still Skoloc couldn’t warm up to her.
She wouldn’t be described as beautiful, but there was a certain, quiet prettiness to her face.
Skoloc wondered, why she was still unmarried. He didn’t know much about the two siblings, other than that Gerald was a high-ranking officer at the base and strived for a more important post- he was feared by many of his subordinates.
Beth on the other hand- the people liked her, even though she was Gerald’s sister- Skoloc had seen many people watching her with sympathy, yes, even pity, and Skoloc wondered, why.
Sure, with this brother it was probably no wonder, that the people regarded you with pity.
Still, there had to be more than that and he decided to find out.
If everything worked, and Beth had asked him to come here today, because of what he thought she wanted him to ask, then he would have a chance to contact Tycho soon, with that opportunity.
And then Tycho would come and fetch him and he would leave Corulag for good.
Still, it couldn’t hurt to gather some information.
Be always attentive and listen to every tidbit of information, even if it may sound ever so silly, when in a bad situation, was what his father had told him.
And how the people on Alderaan had liked to express it: Know your opponent.
That was exactly what Skoloc wanted to.
He raised his hand and knocked.
Part 2
Beth looked up from her papers. “Come in, Skol” she said loudly.
Skoloc entered quietly, closing the door behind him.
For a while, neither of them spoke.
Then Beth opened her drawer and presented Skoloc a little datapad.
“Here.”
Skoloc didn’t take the offered datapad.
“What is it?”
Beth studied Skoloc for a moment, and he tried to appear as impassive as possible, unwilling to give anything away.
Finally, Beth dropped her gaze and said:” Come.”
Skoloc followed her through another maze of corridors to a part of the base, where he hadn’t been often. Beth stopped at a door with a plague, wich read: “Authorised personnel only”.
The woman knocked lightly and they were scanned from head to toe by a red beam.
Finally, a cold, imperialistic voice said: “State purpose and give clearance code.”
Beth cleared her throat. “Lieutenant Bethany Stone from Station 3 and Skol Donvar here to see Commander Tüftler, sir. Clearance code Gamma 347.“
A pause. “You’re allowed to enter. Second door to your left.”
The door opened and they entered in a large hall.
Dozens of computers stood there and a number of people with headphones sat behind them, busy typing, only giving them a fleeting glance, when they passed, then immersing again in their work.
“Where are we?” Skoloc whispered, but in the silence it sounded as if he had shouted, which made him immediately turn bright red.
Beth smiled tightly. “You’ll see soon enough.”
She opened an inconspicuous door to their left, which was labelled impersonally:
“Imperial Intelligence section 3, Corulag.”
Beth knocked and a gruff voice called “Come in.”
Skoloc gave the door a last glance and walked in a wholly different environment.
The room was a lot smaller than the other one, and it seemed to be better-cared for.
The walls were painted a light blue, so unlike the standard Imperial grey and a warm light illuminated the faces of the men, who looked up, when they entered.
Skoloc had heard some of the older technicians in the mess hall talk about that section.
“Self-righteous chaps, the whole lot of ‘em” a technician had said, massaging his forehead.
“Aye,“another had agreed. “Think they are better than us, but they ain’t, with that secret and murder-stuff and so on.”
The other had looked around nervously. “Be silent, will ya? Even the walls have ears here.”
The other had mock-saluted. “Yes, sir. Will do, sir. You know, that last order, that came through, was absolutely ridiculous- I mean, repairing spare parts for TIEs and repainting them bright green-“
Skoloc had stopped listening then.
But he had heard other things too, awed whispers about this section and the secrecy- all that said with that adventurous glint in their eyes, that childlike curiosity, and, being a child himself, Skoloc had only understood the desire to experience a dragon and princess-fairy tale
too well.
And now, he was here. Here among those people, from whom he had heard of so much already.
But they didn’t look menacing or like murderers at all.
Beth nodded politely at them and they returned the nod.
One of them even winked at her, and, blushing a little, Beth pulled Skoloc further around a corner.
Behind a table in a corner, there was a white-haired man.
Skoloc’s breath caught in his throat. He looked just like- but he couldn’t be- or, could he-
“Grandfather?” he asked, his heart hammering wildly in his throat.
The man looked up and Skoloc saw, that his eyes were a serious brown, so unlike Grandfather’s eyes.
Fighting the lump of disappointment, that was rising in his throat and the tears in his eyes, Skoloc said quietly: “I am sorry, sir. I thought you were someone I knew once.”
The old man nodded, accepting his apology, then he looked to Beth and said with a composed voice, which was full of quiet authority: “Yes, Lt. Stone?”
Beth snapped off a salute and then said quietly: “This is Skol Donvar, the son of my late husband’s sister.”
Right. Skoloc suddenly remembered, she was married once, but her husband has died already. Gerald has mentioned it at one occasion.
She had already continued: “ Skol has some skills in slicing already and so, I sent him here. He can learn more from you, if you permit it, Commander.”
The old man slowly looked at her, then at Skoloc.
He looked as if he wanted to say something, then shook his head and said calmly:
“The boy can stay as long as he doesn’t damage any computers and stays away from the other sections.”
Skoloc, who suddenly recognised this as his opportunity, the one he had waited for all the time, said quickly: “I will be careful, sir. I promise.”
The gaze of Commander Tüftler rested on him for some seconds, and there was a flicker of suspicion in his eyes, but he only said: “He can stay.”
“Thank you,“Beth sighed, and Skoloc wondered, why she was that relieved.
“I’ll leave him here, now.”
The Commander nodded and Beth left with a final salute.
“So, young man.” The Commander motioned to a chair.
“Take a seat.”
Skoloc obeyed wordlessly.
“So, tell me, boy, where are you from?”
“I am from Alderaan, sir.”
Skoloc saw no use in lying to the man, he had the disconcerting feeling, that he would find out eventually.
There was a flicker of something in the man’s eyes, but finally, he nodded.
“Alderaan, so, so.”
Skoloc bit his lip. He was unsure of himself.
The man was making him anxious and jumpy.
“Beth told me you know the basics of entering other computer terminals unauthorised already.”
“Yes, sir, I do.”
“Well then” the Imperial said gruffly.
“You should know, that this section of Imperial Intelligence is a secret to even the other personnel of the base. You know probably, that some irregulars are stationed here, those who have disobeyed orders before. No one would associate this base with Intelligence.”
Skoloc looked at him. “Sir, why do you tell me all these things?”
“Well” the old man said, leaning back in his chair, “technically you’re a member of Intelligence now, even if you are a very young member.”
Skoloc didn’t know what to say. He wasn’t flattered, he had rather got a cold feeling in the pit of his stomach. “Thank you, sir,“he replied tersely, but he didn’t mean it.
He rather felt as if he had just signed the document to his own doom.
