Not a single review.... cry
Hope you- yes you who is just reading this, still like it and will leave me a little nice review batting

This chapter is for Demon28.

Chapter thirteen

The next weeks flew by, and to his dismay, Skoloc still wasn’t allowed to access the holonet without strict observation, and so, he had no opportunity to find out how to contact Tycho.
But other things happened too.
Seph Tüftler had left the base for a while, telling Skoloc, that he would return in a few months.
Skoloc still didn’t know how to feel about this- thrilled or fearful.

Tüftler was an Intelligence Agent of the finest sort- his words sounded like honey, but you had to be careful not to trust him unconditionally.
The man had other faces too- he could turn around and be a different person.
Worst of all, Skoloc liked him.
He reminded him too much of his own grandfather and so he couldn’t help it.
But there was that other saying on Alderaan: Always double-check the others motives, maybe they have an advantage, if they treat you friendly.
The Alderaanians had been cautious people, and Skoloc vowed to try to stay true to this caution.
But often he was only a teen, almost still a child longing for some warm words, and Seph Tüftler was someone to look up to, someone to receive leadership from…

The morning after Tüftler had left, Beth headed for him sitting in the mess hall.
“You’ll be going to school tomorrow.”
Skoloc quickly thought of an argument, that would help him not to go to school.
“I can’t, Madam. I- I-“
“You what?” she prompted.
Then Skoloc was silent and gave in to face the inevitable.

The school wasn’t at all like his school on Alderaan.
What was similar however was the smell- how he hated it.
This mixture of perfume, stale air and the tangy smell of food came up to meet his nose as soon as he opened the door.
Skoloc sighed in disgust.
A woman with short, greying hair and a permanent scowl appeared out of a side door and eyed him strictly.
“Skol Donvar?”
“Yes, Ma’am.”
“I am Madam Stelt and you will only address me as such. Is that clear?”
“Yes, Madam Stelt.”

He followed her and almost had to run to keep up with her fast strides.
She opened the door to a classroom and Skoloc stepped hesitantly in after her.
A crowd of curious faces stared at him and he almost felt like turning around and walking back to the base.
“Everyone, this is your new comrade, Skol Donvar.” She pushed Skoloc and he almost felt as if he was in a prison camp.
“Go, boy, find a seat.”
“Yes, Madam Stelt,” Skoloc murmured and avoided looking the others in the eyes.
He sat down next to a girl, but he didn’t look at her.

He stared persistently at the top of his desk and wished, school were already over.
“So, Mr. Donvar, why don’t you tell us a little about yourself, where you’re from…”
Skoloc froze. He hadn’t expected this, but he knew that Alderaan was written down in his documents, so he couldn’t lie, even if he wanted to.
“My dead uncle’s wife took me in, when Mum died” he explained, sticking to his cover story.
“She is an officer at the local base.”
Madam Stelt’s expression didn’t change.
Then she said: “That’s a very honourable profession for her to have, you know.”
“Yes, Ma’am.”
“So, but you still haven’t told us of your home.”

Skoloc’s tongue felt dry.
He said quickly : “I’m from Alderaan.”
”Excuse me?” The teacher asked.
Skoloc sighed. Now they would all hear it.
“I am from Alderaan, Ma’am.”
The students around him gasped and some gaped openly at him, as if he were some kind of a souvenir. Skoloc kept his gaze on the table, which seemed to be his only solace at the moment.

My own chapter! Thank you Abeja....

You've got the feelings of being the "new kid" in a class down pat; being a military brat myself I know all about having to go to a new school every 3 years or so. It is hard to fit in with kids who know they aren't going to move anytime soon. Skoloc is sort of in the same situation no longer having a home and a family. Being from Alderaan makes him an odd person in the eyes of the rest of the class...

Skoloc also has to temper his longing for "warm words" especially from Tuftler; just a feeling but I think Tuftler has an agenda of his own which could involve Skoloc and may prevent him from locating Tycho.

Where is Stef? Skoloc needs friends and Stef is someone I think can help Skoloc in his quest to find Tycho.

On a personal note, thank you for your thoughts about my "Baby Boy" Demon. He is still alvie and going to the vet tomorrow. Hopefully we're going to get good news!

Looking forward to another update before you and your friends run off to Greece happy

Hi everyone. Yes, I am still alive. Sorry for the long wait- I was quite busy- first with tests in school and then with a class outing to Vienna. But here I am again- with an update for you. ~ Greetings, Abeja

Demon28:Hello! You know, I told a friend of mine, that I named one character in this story Tüftler ( She laughed at me^^ but now I'll tell you why). In German a Tüftler is a person, who likes to piece things together, someone who's always busy working away on some project, mostly something technical. That description doesn't exactly match this Tüftler's personality, but I thought that he's probably also a very busy person, that has always something to do, someone who is even scheming, when he looks as if he's just dozing on a chair in the corner.
It has to be hard, being the new kid in class. Fortunately I have never been forced to relocate to another school and I am really glad, because if there is something I hate, it's drawing too much attention to myself. And well- here's my update, before I run off to Greece (-; Oh, and of course: you're welcome happy and thank you for your review!

Meredith_Kenobi: Thank you so much for your review. Don't worry about that, I am glad you do- don't worry about the when. Well---poor Skoloc. But he'll somehow find a way out of it.

Chapter fourteen

Fortunately, Madam Stelt dropped the matter
“Get your datapad. Write down, what I dictate to you…”
Skoloc was finished earlier than the others and so he had time to study the girl next to him.
She was petite, at least a head smaller than him and she had long, dark brown hair that hung messily over the back of her chair.
Her face was ordinary, as were her eyes, but when she laid down her datapad and turned to face him, he had to change that opinion.
Her eyes were normal, green and questioning, but there was something about her, that struck Skoloc as odd.
She seemed almost absent, as if she wasn’t sitting next to him, but rather floating over the clouds in the rainy sky.
Skoloc didn’t know how to express it, she was like a wolf in a herd of sheep to him.

“Hello,“she said sharply. “You finished with staring now?”
Skoloc pulled himself together. “Yes, actually, I am” he answered honestly.
To his surprise she threw her head back and laughed loudly, drawing the attention of the whole class to them.
“Something funny, Miss Saccal?”
She stopped laughing immediately.
“No, Ma’am.”
Madam Stelt came to stand before their table. “You won’t cause trouble anymore, young lady, otherwise you know what will happen.”
She nodded, defiance shining in her eyes, but when Madam Stelt stroked her cane, she slanted her eyes and looked away.
Skoloc felt his heart beat faster: he hadn’t known, that the teachers here had crude methods like that. Alderaan’s teachers had been as peaceful as the planet and Skoloc was used to being inattentive in class. They had played practical jokes on the teachers and they had never got in trouble for that.

As if she had read his thoughts, the girl elbowed him and whispered:
“You better pay attention here all the time.”
“Why?”
She showed him her forearm, which was littered with a multitude of red welts.
Skoloc sucked his breath in sharply.
“Why do you warn me? I thought, you didn’t like me.”
She met his eyes calmly. “I never said that. It’s my duty to inform new students of that. The teachers want it so. Intimidating, you know.”
“Yes,“Skoloc said. That he understood.

In that moment, the bell rung and the girl stood up, gathering her books and walking away.
“Wait” he cried. “What’s your name?”
She didn’t even turn around. “I don’t see the relevance of that question, Alderaan survivor.”
Alderaan Survivor. Skoloc felt bile rise up in his throat and he balled his fists, wanting to squeeze the life out of her. That little…
A hand on his arm stopped him.”That’s Alina. But the others in the class call her Temban, that means Icy.”
Skoloc turned around, to see who the speaker was. It was another girl.

Her strawberry blond hair was pulled in a messy bun, but it wasn’t her hair, which caught
Skoloc’s eye.
The left side of her face was marred by a white scar under her left eye.
And the eye itself …was white. She was half-blind. The other eye was of a deep brown colour
and she was watching him quite intently.
When he realised that, Skoloc looked away quickly.
She smiled a little. “Don’t be ashamed. Everyone stares, when he sees me for the first time. I have got used to it already, don’t worry.”
Skoloc looked up, sincere apology in his eyes.
“I am sorry.”

“Don’t worry about it.“She smiled and gave him a sly grin.
“Hey, do you want to join me, eat some Mel-noodles with me?”
“What’s that?” At least it sounded delicious.
“It’s,“she frowned thoughtfully,“a very sweet confection of pastry. You can eat it with different sauces, for example custard…But you can also eat it with some fruits.”
“It sounds good” he smiled. “Just let me tell Miss Sto- I mean Beth of it.”
He quickly used the special comlink, which had been given to him, to ask for Beth’s permission and when he got it, he turned around to the girl, who studied him calmly.

Suddenly, as if a mask was sliding in place, she jumped excitedly, and said:
“Oh, how rude I was! I still didn’t give you my name…It’s Telja Tsmar.”
“That’s a beautiful name.”
She smiled. “Thank you. Skol is a very beautiful name, too. I have never heard it before.”
Skoloc felt an instantaneous pain well up in his chest.
“You couldn’t have.It’s a typical Alderaanian name.”
Telja bit her lip and Skoloc recognised her behaviour as that of many people in the last few weeks, who didn’t know how to deal with a survivor of Alderaan, especially with such a young one.
Even the air seemed to tense up, waiting for her to act.
Somehow Telja’s next words would be decisive. He felt it in every fibre of his body.
She hesitated, then she touched his hand slightly and squeezed it shortly.
Despite not knowing her at all, he accepted her touch and gave her a grateful smile.
Again she blushed and said abruptly: “Come on. I’ll show you where you’ll get the best Mel-noodles of the whole city!”

P.S.: If you look at Telja's family name more closely, you might notice something^^...

Hi everyone! I am afraid this will be the last update for quite some time, as I am going to go to Greece this Thursday with some friends of mine. But to be honest, this Thursday is still quite far away for me, since I have the practical driving test on Wednesday. I am already afraid--- Please, wish me luck, guys worried cry praying
Greetings, Abeja

LarsKronus: oh! A new face! Welcome aboard. Thank you so much for your feedback- and of course I will gladly add you to the PM list. Great that you got it. (My friends always tell me I got an obsession with weird names, that have some special meaning^^) Yes, poor Skoloc. But he is a tough cookie! I hope you continue enjoying this happy - I do my best!

Chapter fifteen

The Mel-noodles were sweet and cool on his tongue. Maybe the day would be good, too.
And so, when the afternoon slowly progressed further, Skoloc found himself comfortably chatting with Telja, sitting on a giant, old stone wall, where they had a wonderful view of the whole city.
People walked on by, young ladies with prim white dresses, old men, laughing and chatting families…But as soon as a squad of stormtroopers rounded the corner, the laughter stopped and the people seemed to be determined to be especially inconspicuous.
Skoloc tensed, adapting to the anxious atmosphere, till the Stormtroopers were out of sight. Then he relaxed again, noting that Telja mirrored his pose.

“Aldera was quite different from Curamelle,“Skoloc found himself saying, eyeing a lone bird fly towards the dusty red sunset.
“Not so dusty and grey, like here. The trees were so high, that you couldn’t see their tops sometimes. And everywhere there was grass and there were so many flowers, so many different flowers! And every flower was flown at by another kind of butterfly. Some of them were big- one metre of wingspan- others were small and of the lightest blue, that you can imagine…”
Skoloc lay down on his back and closed his eyes.
“And the scent- there were so many scents in the air! The flowers smelt wonderful, and the air was fresh and mild…The waft of the baker’s fresh bread tingled in your nose, when you rounded the corner…And then the lakes…Beautiful lakes with colourful sunsets…we would play in the sand and build sand castles…I often went to a swim then, and the water felt like a mother, who is protecting you from every evil.”

He opened his eyes and sat up. Telja was watching him closely and he recognised her expression to be one of longing: She, the city-child from Corulag, the Imperial-controlled world was in awe upon hearing, that there were worlds so different from her reality.
Softly, she said: “It sounds like paradise.”
“In a way.” Skoloc agreed with a heavy heart. “It was paradise, in a way, but I never- I never noticed that and now it’s too late.”
Telja’s expression changed again, as if she were wearing the next mask now.
“Humans” she said slowly” tend to dismiss things, they consider usual, with a hand wave, but once they have lost these things, they discover how important they were to them.”
Skoloc nodded.
The sun was setting on the horizon and its last red rays touched their faces.

“It was good to talk with you, Telja.”
Skoloc hopped down from the wall on the street.
“I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Bye,“she called, and when he was a street further down and looked up to the wall, he could still see her sitting there, head thrown back and enjoying the view of the dying sun.
He smiled. Telja was different from any girl, he’d ever met.
She was mysterious, flippant at some times and filled with a sudden insight at others.
She was a riddle, that he wanted to solve.

Coming back to base, everything was as usual, but for once, Skoloc was in a better mood.
It seemed as if maybe his stay where wouldn’t be so bad after all.
He would find Tycho, as soon as he would be able to use the holonet alone.
Skoloc was confident at first, that it would be soon the case, but as the weeks passed by and
Commander Tüftler came back, his quiet assurance shattered.
The Commander wouldn’t let him near a holostation without his surveillance, and while
Skoloc learnt all finesses of hacking and computer language, he grew more and more
frustrated. Finally, he learnt Imperial codes and transmission methods, a technique he
dismissed then as unimportant, but if he had been able to look in the future, he would have
paid more attention.
His friendship with Telja became gradually stronger- they would sit on the wall for hours,
enjoy the sun or just talk the golden days away, play in the streets and chase butterflies.
His relationship with Alina stayed cold- but at least she borrowed him her notes, when he
asked her and one time she had even smiled at him.
Telja claimed later, when he told her of the smile, that it had probably been a grimace.
Strange- normally she was more tolerant when it came other people.
Still, Skoloc considered it as an improvement.
And so he spent the hot days of summer: sitting on the wall, talking and laughing with Telja,
learning in school, discovering more and more about computers with Tüftler or he talked with
Stef.

But as summer changed into autumn and then slowly in the colder days of winter, Skoloc still
hadn’t heard anything from the outside, all news, which came to Corulag had strictly been
filtered by the Imperials.
Winter was rainy on Corulag, much to his surprise. The winters on Alderaan had been mild.
Here, harsh winds pounded on the land and rain storms made everyone stay at home instead
of going outside.
Telja surprised him on a cold, windy day, by telling him to meet her in a cave somewhere
outside of the city, one, which they had discovered on one of their excursions.
When he entered, he found her sitting in a corner, an intent expression in her eyes and some
tools in her hands, as well as a chaos of wires and metal in her lap.

“What are you doing?” he asked surprised and settled down next to her.
“I am trying to do what is strictly forbidden on this planet.”
“Uhm, a lot of things are forbidden on this planet.” Skoloc smirked lopsidedly, looking more
like a Corellian in that moment. “But still, forbidden sounds good.”
He eyed the tools and the metallic parts. “To me, it looks like as if you are trying to construct a holonet terminal.
She smiled brilliantly. “You were bright and figured it out. Yes, I am.”
“Uh huh. You do realise, that you need more special parts for it.”
“Exactly.”
“So what?”
“Exactly what your job’ll be. You live in the base, don’t you? So…you could get us these
special parts.”
Skoloc jumped up. “You are asking me to steal them?”
“You would have to do it subtly.“ She gave him a pleading look. “Please? I know you want
to know, too, what’s going on in the universe, not only here, on this sad planet.
Besides,“this time her grin was sly “I still need a lifeday present for you, and a working
holonet station would be a beginning, wouldn’t it?”
“It would never work.” Skoloc shook his head disbelievingly.
“The Imperials would pick up the unidentified signal- you know, that they rig every new
holonet terminal, you have to register it, and they watch all your activities. So what do you
think, they would do, if they discovered this signal?”
Telja looked up at him, and as much as he had got used to it, her milky white right eye and
the scar were disconcerting in the dim light of the cave.
She smiled, slowly, coldly. “Let that be my problem.”

Hi everyone! I'm ba-a-ack happy . As for my driving test- I passed! Yippiee! I am now proud owner of a driving license. But I am not going to drive on the Autobahn yet. People are crazy. They drive there with 200 km/h! And Greece was great. Lots of sunshine, water and sand! Now that I am here, back in rainy old Germany, I wish I had some of that now!
And so for all of you nice people a cookie in form of a new chapter. I hope you like it!

LarsKronus: Good luck with your driving! Don't worry, you will manage it!! Well, Telja is going to accompany us for a while now. Thank you for your review!

Chapter sixteen

Skoloc considered her proposition, as he walked back the rocky path to the city.
It wasn’t as if he weren’t interested in that holonet terminal- truthfully it was
the thing he wanted most now- besides getting back to Tycho, of course.
A holonet terminal could be of great assistance to him.
Yet the risks were great and Telja, Telja had just told him, that she could avoid all these problems. And it was in that moment, that Skoloc questioned Telja’s truthfulness for the first time.
Was she perhaps pro-Imperial after all? She had never told him much about herself.
But still- this was an opportunity and he’d be a damned fool if he didn’t jump at this chance.
So, he would do it.
He had to do it discreetly, taking these spare parts with him, as the Imperials kept a close eye
on everything.

With Stef’s help piece after piece disappeared- thankfully Skoloc managed to keep him from
getting too suspicious by using plausible elusions- however, he felt still bad about it.
In the first days of December, seven months after Skoloc had arrived on Corulag, the holo
station was ready.
Skoloc asked Telja how she wanted to hide the signal, and finally she had it explained to
him, still with that cold glint in the eyes.
“I have some…call it friends, who have some old debts with me.”
“Friends?” he asked, narrowing his eyes a bit.
“None of your concern.”
Angrily, he threw some metal parts on the ground.
“I don’t see how we can be friends, if you don’t trust me!”
She sighed. “Fine. But I expect you to keep it a secret.”
“Yes, I will.”
“You swear?”
“Yes.”
“On Alderaan?”
Skoloc winced shortly and suppressed old anguish. “Fine” he said shortly.
“Hopefully it’s worth it.”
She had noticed his wince, and something like regret flickered over her face.
“I am sorry, Skol. But it’s important. My parents…they were rebel sympathisers- they helped a lot of people. These people felt indebted to my parents and so, they help me now.”

Skoloc stared at her, frozen for a moment.
“Why do you tell me that? You know, I live on an Imperial base, don’t you?”
Telja gave a short laugh. “Of course. You have told me, silly. I don’t forget stuff like that.
It’s just…I trust you. You’re my friend. I also know, that you are an Alderaanian.
Alderaan’s people have honour. That’s what my father always told me. I trusted him, too.”
Skoloc choked on the ugly knot of emotion in his chest.
“You- you spoke of them in the past.”
“They have been dead for a year now.”
The big knot in his chest grew gradually bigger.
“Why did you never tell me?”
She gave him a slight, watery smile. “It just never came up.”
The knot was too much to bear. Skoloc grasped her in a desperate, tight hug, clutching at her.
She sobbed, and he heard his own sobs echo hers, two orphans, who the galaxy had left to
cope alone.

One day his luck ran out. Gerald had found out, that sparse parts were amiss.
The whole base personnel had to line up. Skoloc felt Stef tremble next to him.
He was pale and Skoloc was painfully reminded of the fact, that he was a trained Imperial soldier, who knew how such misdeeds were punished.
They accused a mechanic of having stolen the things and Skoloc didn’t say anything against it. Why didn’t he say anything against it?
Skoloc felt his insides quiver and shame crawled up on him.
The man was led away, and Skoloc felt the shaking get worse- it was on the outside now.
He was shaking, his whole body was shaking, teeth gritted- Shame on you- shame on you-shameshameshame- and he felt bile rise up in his throat.
His nails dug in his hands, he felt blood on his tongue and a hoarse, little sound escaped him.

Stef noticed and looked at him suspiciously. “Hey kid, are you alright?”
“Yeah,” Skoloc whispered. Then he ran out of the base, past the surrounding houses to a little corner with dark, green grass and some bushes.
His hiding place. He was going to be sick.
And he was, for a long, long time, until he was sure, that he had lost everything he had eaten for the last three days.
Then he crawled away from his own shame, put his head on the cool surface of the house wand next to him and wept bitterly.
He had failed them. He was a failure- I am a failure! A shame for them. Shame on me- shame, shame, shame…!
He had betrayed them, betrayed their memory. A true Alderaanian would have revealed, that not the mechanic had stolen the parts, but himself.
He was a thief, and now, worst of all, he was a liar, too.
What would Mum say? He had hated to disappoint her.
Skoloc slowly exhaled. He had been told, that the man would be dismissed summarily.
Sith. And it was his fault, because he hadn’t had the guts to admit, that it had been him.
Skoloc felt, as if a part of Skoloc Celchu had died today. Replaced by a part of a boy named Skol Donvar, someone who had never truly existed.

Hey, sounds like you had a great vacation in Greece. And you passed your driving test. Told you would!

I'm reviewing the last two chapters as I've been alittle lax responding:

You always realize what you had when it is gone as Skloc does when he remebers Alderaan to Telja. He can never see his home again.

It also looks like Skoloc is beginning to like Telja as more than a friend. He is also starting to put his trust in her; hope his trust is justified.

So, Telja has rebel "friends" and her family helped the Rebellion. Skoloc is getting closer to finding Tycho but the cost to him as he sees himself maybe too much. His thinking he has failed the trust of his family could change who he is as a person.

Glad to have you back & look forward to more updates...
