Here's my response to the OC Project which was started by corellian_ale, so kudos sir for kick-starting this happy

This is the first story I'm writing which takes place over a long period of time (ROTS-ANH) so let's all see how that goes. Anyhoo, hope you all will enjoy this!

Chapter 1
A Call to Arms

Wohirorr had tirelessly sat beside the com, anxiously awaiting any word of the impending invasion, ever since King Grakchawwa had defied the Separatists and aligned Kashyyyk with the Republic. Wohirorr could still barely describe the feeling that ran through his whole body when his brother, Kolparin, had broken the news. It had been…electric.

War!

Finally, Wohirorr could show his worth on the most noble of battlefields: the one defending his home of Kashyyyk. The mere thought of it made adrenaline surge through his veins and Wohirorr felt pumped, even when he sat completely still by the com.

‘Dinner,’ Tulbaar, his eldest brother said as he entered the com-room holding a plate with a steak and some fruits on it.

‘Thanks,’ Wohirorr grunted, not tearing his eyes from the com. Tulbaar put the plate down on the table with a bang but it didn’t even make Wohirorr flinch. He simply turned around slowly and met the gaze of his brother.

‘What was that good for?’ he asked as he pulled the cracked plate towards him.

‘It was to get you to snap out of it,’ Tulbaar responded. ‘You’ve been here long enough. Go and do something else,’

‘Why does it bother you?’ Wohirorr asked as he dug into his steak.

‘You can be outside, training and acting like the chieftain’s son that you are supposed to be,’ Tulbaar said impatiently.

‘No,’ Wohirorr said with his mouth full. After he swallowed, he went on: ‘I can’t believe I missed the announcement of King Grakchawwa’s defiance so I’m making sure that I don’t miss the call to arms,’

‘But that can be whenever,’ Tulbaar said tiredly. ‘Who knows if the Separatists will even invade our planet?’

‘They will come,’ Wohirorr said. ‘A Wookiee scalp is worth a lot and they will come here in the foolish attempt to try and claim one,’

‘Still, that can be whenever. Today, tomorrow, next year,’ Tulbaar said. ‘You’ll probably look like a weak, old Wook by that point if you stay in the same place,’

‘Bet I could still take you down,’ Wohirorr said with a cocky grin.

‘That would be hard, seeing as you can’t take me down now,’ Tulbaar retorted.

‘Oh yeah?’ Wohirorr grinned.

‘Yeah,’ Tulbaar said as a smile crept up his face. There was a long silence as the two big Wookiees sat and stared at each other.

‘This is silly,’ Tulbaar said after a while but still holding his gaze. ‘Are we just going to ogle each other…?’ but he was interrupted as Wohirorr suddenly pounced upon him with a roar as the boredom of sitting in front of the com and the excitement that Wohirorr constantly felt finally took its toll.

‘Come on old Wook, fight back!’ Wohirorr laughed as he pounded his eldest brother with his massive paws. But Tulbaar was only defending himself and half-heartedly at that. ‘Come on brother, don’t spoil this,’ and Wohirorr started to threw softer punches and he lifted his weight off his brother. But in an instance, Tulbaars’s arms shot up, grabbing both of Wohirorr’s hands and he quickly placed his feet against Wohirorr’s stomach. Before being launched against the wall, Wohirorr caught a glimpse of the mischievous grin on Tulbaar’s face.

‘Silly Wohi,’ Tulbaar teased as Wohirorr hit the wall heavily. ‘A warrior should never relax. Isn’t that one of the first lesson one learns, Wohi?’

‘And the next lesson is; never call me Wohi!’ Wohirorr shouted and launched himself towards the midriff of his brother. They both fell onto the floor in a heap, hitting each other wherever they could reach. Wohirorr threw a heavy punch into the side of Tulbaar who rolled over and shot up.

‘Give up?’ Wohirorr asked, standing up and trying to disguise his panting.

‘Never!’ Tulbaar shouted and charged his little brother. Wohirorr tried to knock him out but Tulbaar managed to dodge the punch and instead hit Wohirorr squarely in the stomach, knocking all the air out of him.

As Wohirorr reeled, he felt his brother’s arm wrap around his throat and his back suddenly arched backwards forcefully. Tulbaar had grabbed a pawful of Wohirorr’s thick, dark-brown fur on his head and was tugging at it vigorously.

‘You fight like a Trandoshan,’ Wohirorr said through his constricted throat.

‘And you lose, smell and look like one,’ Tulbaar retorted with a laugh. ‘Give up?’

‘Ne…’ but Wohirorr’s protest died in his throat as his brother squeezed harder.

‘I couldn’t hear that. Does that mean that you give up?’ Tulbaar asked teasingly.

Once again, Wohirorr tried to protest but to no avail. His brother’s grip around his throat was to strong and Wohirorr had to resign himself to the fact that his brother had won. Of all the brothers Wohirorr had to pick a fight with, he had to pick the one that had been taught under the same mentor as himself.

‘Give up?’ Tulbaar asked, his voice filled with satisfaction. Luckily for Wohirorr, his impending submission was cut short as the com suddenly beeped. Tulbaar’s grip loosened and with that familiar surge of adrenaline, Wohirorr managed to shrug his brother off him completely.

‘Out of my way,’ he said quickly as he shoved past his brother and activated the com. The small, blue, holographic form of a broad Wookiee in a warrior’s battle-gear appeared.

‘Greetings, Wohirorr son of Gratchhuk,’ the warrior said and inclined his head slightly.

‘Greetings, Chief Tarfful,’ Wohirorr said, mimicking the gesture. ‘I take it that you have important news or else you would not be sending this transmission,’

‘Indeed,’ Tarfful said. ‘The invasion has started, the Separatists have landed scouting forces on Kashyyyk. They’ve established a base out in the Wawaatt archipelago and we believe that they’re intending to assault Kachirho. The Royal families have called for all able bodied Wookiees to converge in Kachirho so to repel the invaders. Can I count on your support?’

‘Do you even have to ask?’ Wohirorr asked with a smile. ‘Yes, you can count on the support of my father and the Wookiees of Trackuuretican,’

‘Thank you,’ Tarfful bowed again. ‘I anxiously await your support,’

‘We will be there as quickly as we can,’ Wohirorr assured Tarfful before the hologram flickered and disappeared. ‘Did you hear that, brother?’ Wohirorr said, barely able to contain his excitement. ‘War!’

‘By Bacca,’ Tulbaar said slowly. ‘Invasion,’

‘Yes! Now, you go and tell father the news,’ Wohirorr said.

‘Me?’ Tulbaar said, pointing at himself and looking surprised. ‘I thought you had waited all this time to do that?’

‘Oh no, I intend to do something else,’ Wohirorr said and made his way to the door. Tulbaar realised what Wohirorr meant.

‘Don’t tell me…’ Tulbaar said.

‘Let me,’ was all Wohirorr could say before he disappeared through the doorway and into cool evening air.

****

It felt like Wohirorr had wings on his feet. That was how light and quick his sprint felt like. Everyone outside turned around the see the big, muscular hulk of Wohirorr run graciously across the walkways. Something must be happening, most thought, because the chieftain’s son would not be in such a hurry if there wasn’t big news afoot.

Wohirorr reached the massive Ancestor’s Tree, with its gnarled branches and dark brown bark, which had been the centre of Trackuuretican since the founding of the town. Wohirorr ran up the stairs that had been carved into the side of the trunk and which wound its way up the side of the tree, up to the very top. He was treading a path few had trodden before and well up at the top, Wohirorr had a breathtaking view of his hometown and the surrounding area.

The very last rays of the sun were shining by the horizon, colouring the sky red and orange but it was quickly succumbing the deep blackness that was the night and already some stars could be seen twinkling like diamonds above. Vast expanses of green lay in front of Wohirorr, as far as the eye could see and in the canopies, the birds were singing.

‘Beautiful Kashyyyk, I won’t let alien scum destroy you,’ he swore and taking a deep breath, he let out an almighty roar that echoed all around him and disturbed the wildlife. Down in Trackuuretican, everyone stopped dead in their tracks when they heard the roar. Such a roar, coming from the top of the Ancestor’s Tree could only mean one thing: war had come.

Wonderful wriitng, yodas_waiter! In a short time you painted a very vivid picture for your characters to star in.

I love wookiee-centric stories, and can see that this one is going to be very good.

If you're offering them, please PM me when you update. grin

VaderLVR: Thanks, but I'm only laying the groundworks. The response itself will come in a few chapters time happy

Meredith_Kenobi: Thanks! Yeah, Wookiees don't seem to get a lot of story time so it's kind of exciting to write this. I'm glad you liked the start of the story. And yes, I'll be offering PM updates seeing as updates will be infrequent (perhaps two a month) peace

Thanks for the comments. Appreciated dancing Hopefully, I can update this soon.

Very nice job with the opening post, yodas_waiter. grin

Wow, two Wookiees roughhousing in an enclosed space...I hope the breakable items are in another room. wink I can easily picture the brothers doing such a thing, though, and it was a fascinating way to introduce them.

I liked the glimpses into Wookiee culture. I'm looking forward to seeing where you take Wohirorr (whew, that's a tricky name to write tongue ).

Great job!

Okay, this update is roughly two weeks late since I could not access this site because my internet provider had a contractual dispute with another internet company. But anyhoo, everything's alright now and here's the update, packed with action. I hope you all like it!

Chapter 2
Droid hunters

‘Perimeter duty,’ Kolparin spat as he grabbed a branch full of leaves hanging in front of his face and broke it off. ‘What have we done to Chief Tarfful for him to bestow such dishonour on us?’

‘Perimeter duty is not a dishonour, brother,’ Wohirorr answered as he was sharpening his claws against the trunk of a tree. ‘There is a risk that the Separatists will try to sneak in behind us and it is an honourable job to guard the backs of our brothers. Besides, there might be hundreds of droids coming towards us and we’re only 15 Wookiees. Personally, I like those odds. They are much better than those on the beach,’

‘At least it’s warm and…’ water from a leaf dripped onto Kolparin’s nose and he shook his head, dispelling water droplets all over the place. ‘…dry on the beach. Besides, we’re just sitting here. Why not go on ahead and face the Separatists head-on?’

Wohirorr sighed and shook his head. Despite being older, Kolparin wasn’t necessarily more mature or patient than his younger brother. He was very fool-hardy and believed that he was essentially immortal. Wohirorr had rarely seen someone so reckless in battle and displaying such a lack of leadership skills, though he compensated for this by being very charismatic. Kolparin could make Wookiee warriors agree to any stupid plan he had and that made him a loose cannon and Wohirorr was usually teamed together with him so that he could keep an eye on Kolparin, which he was doing now.

Wohirorr looked over at his brother and saw that eager, electric look his brother got when things started to get exciting. Several of the other Wookiees nodded in agreement but Wohirorr was the leader of this outfit and he was not about to budge.

‘No,’

‘Why not?’ Kolparin asked.

‘I should not need to explain why that is a bad idea,’ Wohirorr said. ‘We’re staying put,’

‘Stop licking the paws of father, Wohi,’ Kolparin said angrily. ‘Give me a good reason why we shall not go ahead?

‘Bottle-neck,’ Wohirorr said simply and indicated to the mass of rock several hundreds of metres up ahead, that could be seen behind the thick clinging vines and branches full of leaves. ‘It’s basic battle theory, brother,’

‘It’s also basic battle theory that fortune favours the brave,’ Kolparin said with a smile as he jumped off his branch and started making way towards the bottle-neck. Other Wookiees that had grown impatient jumped off their branches too and followed Kolparin.

‘Damn it, Kolparin! Come back!’ Wohirorr shouted and he too was about to jump off his branch when he thought he saw some movement up far ahead. He grabbed his electrobinoculars and looked through them. Through them, he could see glimpses of camouflage painted droids moving slowly through the undergrowth followed by AATs. Wohirorr swore softly and leaped off his branch to follow his brother.

Cutting swiftly through the undergrowth with the help of his strong arms and sharp claws, Wohirorr made rapid progress. Much to his annoyance, he could hear his fellow Wookiees moving up ahead and if it wasn’t for the dire situation they were in now, Wohirorr would give his elder brother a stern talking to concerning the matter of moving silently. Wohirorr reached the group and pushed his way up front to Kolparin.

‘Glad you decided to join us, little brother,’ Kolparin smiled as Wohirorr grabbed hold of his shoulder and turned him around.

‘The Separatists are right in front of us,’

‘What?! I don’t…’

‘Get out of the way!’ Wohirorr shouted impatiently and shoved his brother into the shrubs as he turned around to the other Wookiees. ‘Get off the path! Get off the path!’ he urged them as behind him, the heavy droning of the AATs grew louder and louder. The Wookiee warriors scattered quickly into the bushes and Wohirorr was about to take cover when several droids emerged from the undergrowth.

It took them only a split-second to analyse and home in on the lone Wookiee target but Wohirorr was just as quick in his reflexes as he grabbed his bowcaster and gunned down the droids in quick succession. An AAT burst through the undergrowth, smashing the remaining droids and charged straight at Wohirorr who had no time to escape. However, Kolparin and two other Wookiees leapt from some branches and onto the AAT. The two Wookiees stuck two charges on the back of the tank whilst Kolparin climbed out on the turret and threw a grenade down it.

‘Fire in the hole!’ Kolparin shouted and leapt of the AAT with the other Wookiees and disappeared into the bushes. The distraction had also given Wohirorr time to escape and as he took cover, the AAT blew up. As Wohirorr climbed up a tree, he could see droids swarming past the burning wreck and other AATs cut down the dense vegetation around them and opened fire. Wohirorr could not help but snicker. It seemingly hadn’t crossed the droid’s minds that the Wookiees had moved for a higher vantage point instead of remaining on ground level where the droids were firing now. They were only worthy adversaries if they came in superior numbers and it was nothing worthy with an uneven fight.

‘Droids are for cowards,’ Wohirorr thought as he perched himself on a branch and watched on as the blaster fire tore through the jungle, tearing it to shreds and burning it down. After a few minutes, the droids ceased their firing, seemingly believing that the Wookiees had succumbed and the column kept on moving forward. It left behind it the smell of burning and the jungle was now dead silent. Wohirorr cursed the Separatists disregard for life and swore to get every last one of them, but he did not spring into action. Wohirror was cut of from all the other Wookiees who were on the other side of the path and he had no way if contacting them since they were observing radio silence.

It didn’t help that Kolparin, with his lack of tactical understanding, was Wohirorr’s second-in-command and Wohirorr dreaded what his older brother might think of. Now and then he would look across the path hoping to catch a glimpse of the other Wookiees, but he didn’t which made him feel isolated and alone. The minutes seemed to pass excruciatingly slow as Wohirorr sat there all alone in silence, watching the column of droid and tanks passing on under him.

Then suddenly, up ahead, Wohirorr could hear roaring and explosions and the column slowly grinded to a halt. He knew instantly what was going on and he felt nothing but pride towards his brother. He had apparently done the smartest move and attacked the column in the middle, which would result in confusion at the front and in the back, breaking up the ranks. Wohirorr leaned out through the canopy and saw that the column was now moving backwards, seeing as the path up ahead was blocked by marauding Wookiees, but he would make sure that their retreat proved just as unsafe.

Roaring with excitement, Wohirorr leapt off his branch and landed in the middle of the retreating column, crushing two droids. The sudden appearance of a massive Wookiee in the middle of their ranks even startled the usually cool and calculative droids and the few seconds of hesitation was enough for Wohirorr to move out of the way, smashing some droids with his elbows and paws. Leaping to the side, he brought forth his bowcaster and started firing at the droids, gunning most of them down in quick succession. The other started firing after him, but Wohirorr moved graciously and jumped up on an AAT which was backing up, tore up the hatch and gunned down the pilot and gunners which brought the AAT to a halt. The droids swarmed around the AAT and fired at the Wookiee as he jumped off the turret and charged into the retreating column of droids, with the other droids firing right into it. Droids were being cut down by friendly fire all around Wohirorr as he ran towards the next AAT that was backing up, this time holding a thermal detonator in his paw. Gunning three droids that moved in front of him to block his way, Wohirorr jumped onto the AAT and within two steps, was on the turret. He slung his bowcaster around his back and was about to force open the hatch when a droid popped up, with its blaster trained at Wohirorr. The Wookiee reacted instinctively and brought down his massive paw upon the head of the droid which was hit clean off. Within the blink of an eye, Wohirorr threw down the thermal detonator and jumped off the turret as it exploded. The fireball engulfed several droids whilst shrapnel cut down several more. A supporting AAT got hit by shrapnel and wayward projectiles which caused it to catch fire and crash onto the path.

The path was now in complete bedlam with dismembered droid parts scattered all over the place and two AATs fully aflame. Wohirorr had thus far avoided getting a scratch and his fur wasn’t even singed. He was having the time of his life as he continued up the path, gunning down confused droids as they tried to readjust to the situation. Wohirorr cut down several more of the flimsy battle droids when he suddenly felt a heavy thud against his shoulder and he fell forwards. Wohirorr had been hit but he seemed to be unharmed. Instead, it was his ornamental shoulder-pad that had taken the brunt of the hit and it was burned and bent out of shape as Wohirorr threw it off. Wohirorr turned around to grab his bowcaster which was lying on the ground, just out of his grasp. Wohirorr reached out to grab it when, suddenly, a heavy metal foot bore down upon it, crushing it.

As Wohirorr looked up, he saw the robust frame of a super battle droid towering above him with its wrist-blaster trained squarely at his head. Wohirorr planted his paws firmly to the ground and shifted his weight onto his arms whilst he swung around with his lower part of his body and hit the droid’s legs, tripping it. As the super battle droid hit the ground, Wohirorr pounced upon it and ripped its arm clean off. He dug his hands into the hole where the arm had been and pulled at all the wires. The droids arm shot up in an involuntary motion and as Wohirorr tugged at the wires again, it started to fire. Planting himself firmly behind the battle droid, Wohirorr forced it forward and by tugging at the wires, Wohirorr made it gun down the other droids making their way towards with him. However, the battle droid took several hits and it died down in Wohirorr’s arms. Wohirorr discarded the shell of the battle droid quickly, smashing some droids with it, and launched himself at the droids nearest to him and using his claws and paws, started decimating them. Wohirorr worked himself up in a frenzy and scraps of droids were flying around him as he cut deep gashes into their metal bodies and tore limps from their torsos.

Despite this, the droids came in closer and Wohirorr realised that without a bowcaster, he would not last long. Wohirorr aimed to reach the tree-line but the retreating droids were in his way and were also coming up behind him. For the first time in his life, Wohirorr started to feel overwhelmed as he lifted one of those spindly battle droids and catapulted into the rest and he could feel the fatigue setting in. The tree-line seemed to be too far away, but nonetheless, Wohirorr would make an attempt for it, but he didn’t even have time to start his run as a bolt grazed his side. The shock and pain of it caused Wohirorr to fall forward onto the ground and he got dirt and gravel in his fur, eyes and mouth as he hit the ground heavily. The droids quickly surrounded him and had their blasters trained right at his head. Not far behind came an AAT and Wohirorr couldn’t help but smile grimly. At least they were going to make sure that he was truly taken down.

Suddenly, the turrets of one of the AATs blew up and it careened into several droids. The attention of the droids was broken so Wohirorr afforded himself to raise his head slightly to see what was going on. Another AAT was coming up towards them and if Wohirorr hadn’t known better, he would’ve thought that it had been the AAT that had fired at its comrade. The droids watched warily as the AAT came closer and then grinded to a halt only a few metres from them. As the hum of the repulsorlifts died down, Wohirorr noticed that he could still hear the fighting that was going on in the jungle beyond him. It seemed like the Separatist forces had split into smaller factions that doggedly were trying to make their way to the beach at Kachirho. A droid commander lowered his gun and started to walk towards the AAT when the tanks blasters suddenly activated and started cutting through the droids that were standing all around Wohirorr, who pressed himself as close to the ground as he could. When the firing had silenced, Wohirorr raised his head tentatively and looked at the AAT and saw a familiar face sticking out from the hatch in the turret.

‘Kolparin!’ he shouted, having never been happier to see his older brother.

‘What are you doing down there, little brother? You’ll get your fur dirty!’ Kolparin smiled.

‘How did you…?’ Wohirorr asked as he climbed up the front of the AAT.

‘Fortunes favour the brave,’ Kolparin simply said. ‘Besides, you’ve done a pretty good job cleaning up back here,’ Kolparin looked across the path where several AAT wrecks were burning and parts of droids were scattered.

‘Did you attack the middle of column?’ Wohirorr asked as he sat himself on the turret.

‘Yes. For once, I tried to act like you would have and it worked…mostly,’ Kolparin eyed Wohirorr curiously. ‘Where’s your bowcaster?’

‘Lost it,’ Wohirorr answered.

‘So how did you…?’ but before Kolparin could finish his question, Wohirorr just flexed his claws. Kolparin chuckled: ‘You’re bad, Wohi,’

‘Eh,’ Wohirorr shrugged. ‘They’re droids and I think it’s justifiable in this case. Just don’t tell father,’

‘Your secret is safe with me,’ Kolparin winked. ‘But enough with the talk! Chanuk!’ Kolparin shouted down the hatch. ‘Onwards! We’ve still got droids to hunt,’ a growl floated up from within the AAT to which Kolparin simply responded: ‘Try to remember which button you pushed or just press them at random. You’ll find it eve…’ and with a jolt, the AAT sped forwards and paved a way into the jungle.

Great post! applause Maybe the fight changed Kolparin's attitude about performing perimeter duty. wink

You did a really good job with all of the action. The pacing was right on, and I had no problems following everything that was happening. I liked how Wohirorr used the super battle droid as a weapon against the smaller battle droids--that shows some quick thinking on his part. happy The Wookiee-commandeered AAT at the end was cool, too, especially with the pushing buttons at random, LOL.

Great job, and I'm looking forward to more! grin

Thanks Thumper happy Pacing was my main concern because and many points, it seemed jumbled and disconnected, but I'm glad that it did work out in the end.

And the Wookiees at the end, that's a little homage to Chewie and the AT-AT wink
