This is a companion thread to The Ultra Stressed Jedi Students: Return of the Exchange Program. This is the thread for those who are writing Padawans who are attending a 'normal' school outside the Temple. Those who wish to join are welcome. Please visit our planning thread: USJS Revival: A Renewal of the Insanity?
The school is the Edjuan Co'nor Makneill public school.

Meilynn handed a credit chip to the speeder driver and shifted her bag to the other hand as it pulled away from the building's landing pad. She glanced around at the unfamiliar skyline. She was far enough away from the Temple now that even if she were to stand on the top of the tallest building near her she wouldn't even be able to catch sight of the Temple's highest spire.
And she was alone.
Her master was back in their quarters at the Temple. He was probably napping again. He'd been doing that a lot since they let him out of the medcenter on Lyre, where their last mission had very nearly ended in total disaster. They said that with a little therapy he'd be able to walk without a limp again. She was just desperately glad that he'd survived at all.
Closing her dark blue eyes, she took a deep breath, pulling the air deep into her lungs. She held it there, clearing her mind, and then let it all out in a gusty sigh. Better get a move on, otherwise she'd still be standing there when the sun set. Shifting her bag again, she walked into the building. The address she'd been given said twentieth floor, apartment two-oh-one-three. She took the lift down to the right floor and then studied the door numbers nearest her before heading off in search of room 13.
The hallways were hushed and quiet, reminding her of the Temple and settling her nerves. Maybe this would be as nice as Master McCal had made it sound, despite the weary and wary look in his eyes. Even though he'd been put in carge of the exchange program by the Council, he'd almost sounded like he was trying to convince himself as well as her. The healers said that her own master had needed peace and quiet for a while, so she'd agreed to participate. With another deep breath to compose herself, Meilynn pressed the summons button beside the door to number thirteen.
She waited patiently, but nothing happened. Surely the Kinsers had been warned of her arrival. Frowning slightly, she pressed the summons chime again. Again there was no answer. Had they gone out to dinner? Had they left on vacation? Was she at the wrong building entirely? She pulled the datapad from her belt and checked the information again. No, she was in the correct place. She was just about to reach out and give the summons chime one last press when the door jerked open.
Noise flooded out into the quiet hallway and Meilynn's first coherent thought was 'superb sound proofing'. A young girl of about ten or eleven years stood in the doorway, her expression a mixture of boredom, frustration and something else that Meilynn couldn't identify. She looked Meilynn up and down before shouting over her shoulder.
"Mom, the Jedi's here!"
"Don't leave her standing out in the hall, Sil," was the shouted reply from somewhere deeper in the apartment.
Sil rolled her eyes, but jerked her head inward before stepping out of the way to allow Meilynn to step through the doorway. The door closed behind her, sealing her in with the utter chaos. The front room was full of movement and color and sound. Small children tumbled and crawled and, in the corner, two even appeared to be wrestling over possession of a stuffed nerf. The amount of noise they produced was appalling. Meilynn had visited the creche more than once since becoming an initiate, but it was nothing like this.
A woman, slightly taller than Meilynn, stepped nimbly through the melee and gently pried the wrestlers apart. They took it calmly, neither retaining possession of the nerf. The woman wove her way back through the tumult without stepping on a fast moving child or carelessly abandoned toy. It looked unconscious, but surely it had to be a skill honed by years of practice. She tucked a strand of her short blond hair behind one ear, smiled brightly, and extended her hand.
"I'm Ahlana Kinser, you must be Jedi D'neyith."
"Uh, yes."
Meilynn took the proferred hand. Sil had managed to disappear without Meilynn even noticing. Ahlana gave her a single quick, warm shake before releasing her. "Welcome. We've got a place ready for you. Hope you don't mind sharing a room."
During this short speech one of the children had attached itself to the woman's leg, sitting on her foot with arms and legs wrapped around one pale blue jumper leg. Meilynn tried not to stare, smiling uncertainly back at the woman, who appeared not to notice the child at all.
"I'm sure that will be fine, Mistress."
A sudden weight against her own leg almost made Meilynn jump. She controlled the reaction and looked down. A second child had immitated the one attched to Ahlana and had wrapped itself around Meilynn's left boot. It was using the edge of her robe to play peek-a-boo with the first child and giggling in piercing shrieks.
"Pella, come away from Jedi D'neyith. She's a guest."
Surprisingly, the child complied with good grace, transferring herself to Ahlana's free leg instead. The game continued unabated.
Meilynn knew she was a little wide-eyed, but she couldn't help it. She could never remember being in a situation like this before.
A young boy shot past them, a few years older than most of the children in the front room. His short-cropped blond hair made it a distinct possibility that he was Ahlana's son. "Mom, can Jayek come over after school tomorrow?"
"Only if he asks his mother first. Come back here and show Jedi D'neyith to her room, young man." Ahlana smiled at her again. "We'll get you settled in first. Dinner will be in about an hour and a half. You'll meet the rest of the family then."
The boy, he may have been about six, stood staring at her for a moment, then grabbed her hand and towed her out of the front room. He led her down a hallway, pointing to the right. "'Fresher."
"Oh, right. Thank you."
"Nup."
The noise lessened slightly as they left the small horde of younglings behind. At the last door on the left, the young man released her hand and slapped an open palm against the closed door. "Vata, Jedi's here. Open up."
There was a muttered 'I can't believe this' and the door opened. The young woman, about her own age, on the other side glared down at her brother. "Fine you told me, now scoot."
The boy raced back up the hallway and vanished. Vata glared out at her for a moment. "Can't talk now. I'll call you back later." She pressed a button on the comm headset that Meilynn had mistaken for a hair ornament. "Well, you might as well come in, then," she said with ill grace. "I finally get my own room and now I have to share it again."
Well, that explained that. "I'm sorry to impose. Perhaps I should sleep on the couch in the front room?"
The girl looked horrified at the suggestion. "Absolutely not! Mom'd hit the roof. I'd be grounded for the rest of my natural life. Just get in here already."
So Meilynn edged past the girl and made her way to the carefully made up bed pushed into the far corner of the room. She'd been on missions before where the presence of Jedi had been far from welcome, but this felt so much more immediate and personal than it ever had before. She would be here for months, too. Best to intrude as little as possible, then. She set her bag down at the foot of her bed and then sat carefully on the edge. So much for resting and relaxing.

Jorya Lank looked outside the viewport curiously as the transport she was on lowered into the atmosphere of the planet and rested on a landing pad. As a Jedi Padawan wasn't the first time she gazed down at an unfamiliar world, but this mission was unlike anything she experienced before. For one thing her master, Ellia Taske was back at the Temple, while Jorya was forced to attend a normal school.
Ever since she heard about the trip, Jorya's nerves started and not even meditation could soothe them. After all what would a normal scool be like? She couldn't think of a possible answer to that question, but she knew it had to be very different from the education she recieved at the Temple. But even this wasn't the worst part of it all. No, Jorya's host family was in fact her biological family.
It seemed that the Lank's decided that they wanted to participate in the program and lived close by the school she would be attending. Jorya was absolutely terrified to meet them in all actuality. When she was a baby they gave her up to be raised by the Jedi and she was very grateful for this, but she worried that she would disappoint them in some way.
Jorya wasn't the most perfect Padawan, but she really tried her best. She was very clumsy, daydreamed, and tended to be very stubborn, but Master Taske seemed to think that she had potential. Already Jorya learned much from her Master, and so she hated that they were going to be parted for a couple months. And after all how much could she really learn at a normal school anyway?
Jorya's day dream was suddenly distracked by the sounds of the boarding ramp being lowered, and suddenly butterflies zoomed angrily in her chest. She was moments away from meeting her biological parents. Strange that she was more terrified of meeting her family than she was of going into a lightsaber duel.
She walked down the ramp and looked around at the crowd that had gathered. A man approached her with a large grin on his face and Jorya instantly knew it was her father. They shared the same eyes, the same face, and the same hair color. Her legs felt like rubber.
Her father embraced her and kissed her forehead. "Jorya, my daughter. I never thought I would see you again," he said.
Jorya was a bit uncomfortable, but she smiled. "It's good to meet you."
Her father smiled back. "Now if only Sela were here to see you."
Jorya was instantly confused. "Who's Sela?"
"Didn't you know? Sela is your twin sister!"

LilyHobbitJedi - Nice post What a surprise, leaving the temple meeting your Dad and then finding out that you have a sister and all in the space of an hour or so! Wonder what else is in store for Jorya.

I hope I got Jorya right, LillyHobbitJedi
After making sure the lastest two transports that pulled up to the platform were not the one he needed to board, Dien-ku looked up at Master Demarc. "Are you all right, sir?" Even though his master always tended to be quiet, he could sense a broodiness in the silence.
Ca'es Demarc smiled slightly at his padawan. "I'll be fine."
Dien-ku rolled his eyes. "I promise to be careful. I'll be polite to my host family, change my underwear and even socks every day whether they need it or not, brush my teeth before bed, and meditate an hour before I go to bed and an hour before I wake up." He smirked as he said the last part. When he had first become Master Demarc's padawan, he and the older jedi had a difference of opinion on the affectiveness of getting up before dawn to meditate. Dien-ku would never admit it to his master that he had actually become used to getting up early to meditate and actually finds it a good way to start the day... though he suspected Master Demarc knew anyway. It's what you get used to, I guess.
Ca'es only chuckled. They had already discussed his real concerns back at the temple.
"I left a note for your exchange padawan to make sure he makes your caf and toast in the morning, so don't think you'll get away without eating breakfast." The young man said in a mock-admonishing tone. He sobered though when he saw his master frown as he looked behind him. Turning, Dien-ku saw his transport arrive. He suppressed the excitement he felt as he looked up at his master once more. "May the Force be with you, Master." He hugged him briefly then turned and hopped on the transport.
He stopped at the first set of seats that had a window seat open and stashed his bag in the overhead compartment. Sitting down, he looked out and smiled encouragingly at his master. ~~I'll be fine.~~
He then turned to watch the other passengers board. He was surprised to see a familiar face. "Jorya," he waved, "are you part of the exchange program, too?"
As he asked, she came to a stop and struggled to put her bag in the overhead compartment, muttering under her breath when the bag popped open and its contents spilled all over the aisle. One tunic dropped on top of her head and hung over her face.
"Peekaboo," Dien-ku grinned when he lifted it off her. As she rolled her eyes and giggled in spite of herself, he said, "Come, let me help you."
They both leaned down to pick up the rest of her things and wound up banging their foreheads together. Jorya could not help but laugh at her friend's comically exaggerated expression. Dienk-ku had a way of making her forget her self-consciousness about being clumsy. After they returned all her clothes to the bag, he stashed the bag in the overhead compartment for her then let her have the window seat.
"Do you mind if I take our picture together?" Dien-ku asked as he indicated the ever present holo-cam he always carried around his neck.
Jorya rolled her eyes but said it would be okay.
He showed her the picture after it was snapped and she had to laugh as he had crossed his eyes and stuck his tongue out the side of his mouth. "Can't you ever be serious?"
Frowning in seemingly deep thought, he pursed his lips then shook his head. "Nah."
Jorya laughed then looked out the window and waved to her master just before they took off.
They spoke breifly about their host families then rest of the ride they spent in companionable silence. Dien-ku had sensed Jorya was in a quiet mood, and respected her enough not to talk her ear off. When they reached their destination, he got both their bags down and handed her hers. As they walked down the ramp, he said, "Well, seeya at school."
"Yeah..." She said before turning to see a man rushing toward her.
Wow, he thought briefly, that's what Jorya would look like if she were a guy... she looks better as a female. He then spotted a short, portly man with a sign above his head reading, "Dien'ku Jain". He smiled and walked over to him. "Mr. Henders? I am Dien-ku Jian." He did not bother to correct the spelling.
Lowering the sign with one hand, Mr. Henders reached out to take the padawan's hand. "Nice to meet you, Dien-ku. You may call me Tod."

You did great, Alexis.
When Jorya entered Lank Manor, she was overwhelmed. Living in the Jedi Temple, she always had anything she needed, but this place she could get any and everything her heart could ever desire. The room she was shown to was larger than some of the training rooms in the Temple and was also lavishly decorated. She was introdiced to a maid and a butler who were assigned to tend to her every need. As one who was used to taking care of herself, Jorya knew without a doubt this was going to be difficult to get used to.
She unpacked her meager belongings and placed then in large dresser and found that everything fit in the corner of the drawer. She investigated a little and discovered that in the other drawers were several tunics, leggings and skirts in all colors and in her size. Jorya felt more uncomfortable looking at them, hoping she would'nt be forced to wear them.
Jorya's first reaction upon meeting her father, was absolute shock. She never anticipated that this trip would involve her coming into contact with her biological family. It was so strange to Jorya to carry his name, and look like him, while at the same time she really had no idea who her father was. He seemed nice enough, and she could sense that he really had a desire to get to know her. Jorya just hoped that she wouldn't disappoint him.
Learning that she was a twin was much more unnerving to Jorya. How strange to think that there was a person out there in the galaxy who looked just like her. She shared a womb with her sister, but never knew of her existance for 16 years. Another strange thing was the fact that she was Force-sensitive, but apparently her sister wasn't. Jorya didn't want to think about it.
Already she was growing homesick, and she wanted to go to this school, just so she would be able to speak to her fellow Padawans. Jorya and her friend, Dien-ku spent the whole trip talking about what to expect and she wondered how he was faring. He was trying to distract Jorya from her worrisome thoughts, and she was very grateful for that.
"Jorya?" said a male voice at the door. She turned to see her father.
"Yes---father," Jorya almost choked out the last word, and she smiled.
"How would you like to go to dinner with me tonight?" he asked. "We can get to know each other a little better."
Strangely the butterflies bagan their mad flutter in her belly once more. "I would love to," Jorta said with more conviction than she felt.

I'm guessing Meilynn's "family" runs a daycare. At least, I hope so for the mother's sake!

Yup, Ami nailed it in one.
____________________________________
Meilynn glanced around her new bedroom. A bigger contrast to her room at the Temple she could not have imagined. The ceiling was painted a dark blue with random speckles or white, or perhaps pale yellow. The walls were a very pale blue, but so covered with posters it was sometimes hard to tell. The dingle window with the curtains drawn back only emphasized the cave-like feeling of the place. And yet it did not feel cold and empty like most caves she'd been in. This room was obviously a sanctuary.
And I'm invading it.
Vata flung herself down on her bed, further rumpling the blankets, and bunched the pillow under her chin. SHe fumed there for a moment before turning her head to stare at Meilynn.
"Are you simple or something? Aren't you going to unpack?"
"I don't wish to intrude..."
"Use the red dresser. I cleaned it out for you. And there's a little room in the closet if you need to hang stuff up." The words came out grudging and resentful, but Meilynn knew she didn't dare refuse. That would only heap fuel on the fire.
"Thank you."
She rose, lifted her bag to the bed, and opened it. She slipped out of her robe, folded it neatly, and set it beside the bag before lifting out her spare tunics, trousers, and underthings. Vata turned her head away in a great show of disinterest. The clothes went into the emptied red dresser with room to spare. They looked so lonely in separate drawers that she was tempted to consolidate them into a single drawer just for the look of the thing. Instead, she left them where they were and turned back to her bag.
She lifted out a holocube, holding it gently in her hand despite the fact that she knew it was nearly accident-proof. With a sideways glance to make sure that Vata still wasn't looking, she activated it. The first image to appear was one of her master with his arm around her shoulders. The next was her master leaning over a datapad, the tip of his tongue sticking out of the corner of his mouth as he concentrated on what he was reading. She knew he hated the holo because it didn't present a dignified appearance, but she loved it. It showed so clearly one of his traits she found most endearing. It showed Than Po, the man, not Master Po the mighty Jedi.
Stifling a longing sigh, she deactivatd the cube and placed on top of the dresser. The only thing left was a small box of book cards for her datapad and her small bag of toiletries. It made a very small tally next to the haphazard tangle of jewelry, gew-gaws, and holodisplays that crammed every other horizontal surface in the room.
Meilynn sank back down on the bed. At the sound, Vata turned her head to regard her once more.
"That didn't take long."
Meilynn shrugged. "I don't have much."
"Hmph."
When the girl didn't turn away, Meilynn risked a tentative question. "All those younglings in the front room, they aren't all..."
"Sith, no!" Vata flipped over onto her side, propping her head up with her hand. "I'd run away from home if I had to put up with them all on a constant basis. No, mom watches kids for friends while they work, or shop, or meet with teachers, or take sick kids to the medcenter, or whatever. It means we've got enough spare credits to do fun stuff on weekends and stuff. But I try not to step out of my room until dinner time. They're all gone by then."
"What time do we need to leave for the school in the morning?"
"Dad drops the younger ones off on his way to work. You and I will walk to the shuttle stop. It only takes about ten minutes, so we need to be out of here by 0645 sharp. The shuttle won't wait, and neither will I."
"Has the school sent my schedule already?"
"No. You'll get it at homeroom with the rest of us. Tomorrow's the first day of the semester, so you haven't missed anything yet." Vata sighed. "You've been assigned to my homeroom, so I can show you where it is."
"Oh good."
Meilynn offered a smile, but Vata rolled her eyes, then rolled over, turning her back on her guest. "Whatever."

Dien-ku politely asked Mr. Henders if he could take a holo-pic of him with the transport in the background. When the heavy-set man agreed to it, he not only took the picture of Tod Henders, but also zoomed in to take a picture of Jorya with her father. He took note of the expressions on his friend's and her fathers faces... she looked startled and rather unsure, while he appeared overjoyed to be reunited with her. I'll save it on a datachip for her and give it to her tomorrow at school. She's gonna hate that picture of her though.
"Come, let's get home. Tanj is making a fancy welcoming meal for you, and we don't dare get there late!" Tod lead Dien-ku to his speeder.
"She didn't have to go to any trouble."
Mr. Hender's belly shook as he laughed merrily. "You have to understand... Tanj loves to cook." He patted his stomach. "See the evidence? In fact, she makes up special events as excuses to prepare a banquet."
Dien-ku found himself liking this jovial man. "Do you and Mrs. Henders have any children?"
"Only six."
The boy blinked in surprise. Though he did not know much about everyday life outside the temple, he knew that on Corruscant, a family with more than three children was considered large. "Only?"
Laughing, Tod nodded. "There's Brand who's sixteen. You'll be sharing his room... I have to warn you, he's not too happy about it. Then the twins, Kaya and Kora, who are fourteen, Lan is ten, Vik is eight, and Tam is three. It can get quite loud at our apartment, so I hope you don't have sensitive ears. Thank the gods we have good soundproofing, or our neighbors would definitely have the landlord kick us out!"
The young jedi's eyes went wide at the cacaphony that assaulted him when the arrived at the apartment, in spite of the man's warning. It seemed a screaming contest was underway between four of the six youths in the living room. The twins were shouting at one of the younger boys... Dien-ku thought that one may have been Lan, the ten-year-old... who shouted back even louder. Another boy of about eight was skipping around the trio chanting something at the top of his lungs while the youngest stood with his back to the room in general in a corner, leaning over and looking at the goings on through his wide-spread legs.
The oldest boy, sitting on a couch and seemingly oblivious to it all, had earphones on and nodded his head back and forth as his mouth moved.
Dien-ku had never seen nor heard anything like it in all his life. He took the opportunity to snap several pictures. Too bad this only takes holo-stills. Master Demarc will never believe the noise level!
Even as he snapped the pictures, his mouth watered at the aroma coming from where he assumed to be the kitchen.
The padawan jumped when a loud, high-pitched sound pierced the chaos. He looked at Mr. Henders and saw the man have his thumb and forefinger in each corner of his mouth as the piercing sound permeated the air. When the man removed his fingers, silence reigned for a full three seconds.
That is with the exception of the eldest child singing/screeching/wailing to the music he was listening to on his headphones.
Dien-ku would not have thought it possible that it could have gotten any louder than before, but it did as the children, with exception to the oblivious teenaged boy, rushed over to their father. The two youngest to happily greet him, the twins and the ten-year-old to air their greivances against each other to the portly patriarch.
The young jedi watched in awe as he watch Mr. Henders handle the chaos with a mixture of sterness, love, and humor. A slender woman came out of another room, and hugged the man.
"Dien-ku," Mr. Henders kept his arm around the woman's waist as he spoke, "this is my lovely wife, and gourmet chef, Tanj." He kissed her cheek when he finished the introduction as their children, still sans the oldest, expressed profound disgust at the affectionate display.
"It's nice to meet you, ma'am." Dien-ku bowed and shook her hand at the same time. "Whatever you are cooking smells wonderful."
"Why, thank you, hon. Call me Tanj, please." Mrs. Henders smiled. "So, what do jedi usually eat for dinner?"
"Ah, nothing special, usually snake stew and cactus needles."
Everyone stared at him with their mouths hanging open as he quickly snapped a group picture and started laughing. "Sorry, I couldn't resist."
The children started giggling and Tod guffawed and slapped him in a friendly fashion on the back. "You're going to fit in here just fine!"
Tanj shook her head and chuckled. "That's all I need is another jokester."
Mr. Henders went over to his eldest son and gently took the headphones off him. "Time to join the rest of the family, son, and greet our guest."

Well I got on a roll, and here my longest response yet! I hope they get to go to school soon, I can't wait for it to really begin.
Jorya's day hadn't improved in the least. When she heard that she was going to dine with her father she planned to go as she was. However, two hours before they were to leave, Jorya's maid, Arene came in and told said she was to help Jorya prepare for the evening. It seemed that after all, that Jorya was going to be expected to wear some of the finery that she found in her drawers.
She bathed and afterwards Arene did her hair, nails and makeup, something Jorya never experienced before. Jorya's hands were calloused from lightsaber training and her nails were broken in areas, but somehow Arene worked wonders. Arene picked out a flowing blue shimmersilk tunic with a matching skirt and silver jewelry to accessorize.
Jorya protested, having never worn a skirt before, but Arene insisted and the ensemble was completed with some torture devices also known as heels. When she looked in the mirror after she was all dressed, Jorya was incredibly shocked. She no longer looked like a Jedi, and honestly Jorya didn't feel like one at the moment. She was annoyed at not having a spot to hang her lightsaber, Jorya felt like she was naked and totally vulnerable with out it.
Then there was the fact that she still had to dine with her father, a man she knew nothing about except for the fact that he helped give her life. Jorya wondered what happened to her mother since she'd heard nothing about her so far, but she was not sure if it would be wise to ask.
~~~~~
Brev Lank was dressed in rich veda cloth, and he looked positviely delighted to be taking his daughter to dinner. He led her to his speeder and he drove them to where they would be dining, which turned out to be an incredibly fancy, upper class sort of place. Travelling with her Master, Jorya had seen some of the seedier sides of the galaxy, but this was one of her first immersions in the opposite ends of the spectrum. Jorya just hoped she wouldn't do anything embarassing.
"Welcome to the Galaxy Bistro," said the maitre'd guiding them to their table. Jorya went to seat herself, but nearly tripped over the maitre'd as he moved to pull out the chair at the same time.
"Oh, sorry," Jorya said, slightly embarassed.
"Not a problem," the maitre'd replied smiling at her as she took her seat. He then began to speak of the specials, the wine line, but Jorya really didn't know what most of it was. This was going to be a long night.
~~~~~
"Finally, we can talk," Brev said smiling at his daughter, after they placed their orders. "You look very lovely, Jorya."
"Thank you, Father." Jorya said. The word was still hard to say, but it was becoming easier the more she said it. "Does Sela like coming here?"
"She loves it," Brev replied with a grin. "I'm sure she would've loved to get to meet you. If we didn't give you to the Jedi, you would probably be great friends."
"I'm sure," Jorya replied with a smile.
"So tell me," Brev asked. "What is your life like at the Jedi Temple."
Jorya grin grew wider. "I love it there. I've very grateful you sent me, because I truly believe that being a Jedi is what I've also been meant to do. I'm apprenticed to Master Ellia Taske, and she has helped me more than I can say."
"So this Master Taske is just your teacher?"
"It's much deeper than that," Jorya explained. "Masters and their Padawans are bound together by the Force, and it's a true friendship and partnership while at the same time I listen to her council."
"What else do you do?" Brev asked, not hiding his curiosity.
"Whenever Master Ellia and I aren't on missions, I'm always trying to hone my skills with my lightsaber, as well as performing some independant study and meditating."
Brev smiled gently. "I've always been so curious about the life you must lead Jorya, it was so hard to give you up."
"Can you tell me about it?" Jorya asked.
"Your Mother Meelia and I were so excited when you and your sister arrived. You were first, but only by a couple of minutes. For the first month we were just so happy to be parents. When we took you both to get your monthly check up, both of us were shocked to realize that you were Force-sensitive. They said something about you having a high midi--something."
"Midichlorian count," Jorya supplied.
"While yours was high enough to get the attention of the Jedi Order, Sela's wasn't. So we made the hardest decision we ever had to make. We gave you to the Jedi, and the service of the galaxy," stated Brev.
"Thank you for doing that for me," Jorya replied. "I'm more grateful than you'll ever know."
"And though I hardly know you Jorya, know that I'm very proud of you."
Jorya hesitated, but then asked the question she'd been wanting to ask the whole evening. "So...what happened to my mother?"
Brev sighed, and a wave of sadness seemed to shroud his face. "You deserve to know. Meelia and your baby sister Mela were killed in a speeder accident when you and Sela were five."
"I'm so sorry," Jorya replied compassionately.
"Me too," Brev answered.
~~~~~
That night after Jorya had finally removed her irritating getup, and put on her pajamas, she finally could relax. This day had been extremely exhausting that was for sure, and Jorya still wasn't happy at being part of this whole exchange program, but she was very grateful for meeting her father. Yes she was still uncomfortable around him, but she learned things about who exactly her family was that she would've never found out otherwise.
The next day she would embark upon a "normal" school for the first time and she wondered what the experience would be like. Hopefully she wouldn't stick out like a sore thumb, and she would be able to make some new friends. She also wondered what the coursework would be like here. Whatever happened next, Jorya hoped she'd be ready to handle it.
Sorry for the length, but I wanted to try to catch up to the approximate time frame of the other posts.
_________________
Tana stared with her mouth open at her master. She wanted her to do what?
“It isn’t the end of the galaxy, Padawan. This will be good for you, learning how to act around ordinary people. Now go pack. Your transport will leave in a couple hours.”
Her master went into her own room, and Tana just knew that she had retreated so she wouldn’t laugh at the flabbergasted expression on her Padawan’s face. She stood there muttering uncomplimentary things about her master and the Council under her breath for a few seconds and then went to her small room. She grabbed a bag from underneath her sleep couch, and took her best tunics and pants, a couple of workout clothes, and some other odds and ends. After she zipped it, she grabbed her datapad, some of her favorite datacards, and the small holocube with pictures of her Master and friends. There was no possible way that she was leaving her favorite novels behind, nor the cube. She wanted some connection to her life at the Temple. She put it all in the small bag she kept specifically for that purpose, and set it next to her clothing bag. She looked around the room to make sure she hadn’t left anything she wanted and sighed. She couldn’t believe that this would be the last time she’d see this room for months. It didn’t seem real.
Two hours later, though, Tana was on a crowded transport just docking at her stop. She was just thankful that someone had decided to give her a seat given the length of her trip, even though she normally hated the special treatment some citizens gave to Jedi. She stood up and maneuvered her way through the crowd, trying not to step on anyone as she made her way to the exit. Once on the landing pad, she looked around and headed off to a nearby bench. She had to figure out where she needed to go, and the information was on her datapad.
After a quick glance at the map and address, she shoved the device back into the bag and walked to the nearest turbolift. Two stories up, and then a walkway to the next building, and then up three more. She took the short walk as an opportunity to look around and get her bearings. There was a restaurant that specialized in Twi’lek food, a tapcaf that looked fairly popular, a couple of multi-species clothing stores, and some offices of various sorts, including a walk-in med clinic. There were humans and aliens from dozens of worlds moving around her intent on their own business. Few people paid attention to the Jedi Padawan in their midst, though a mother with a couple of young children stopped her son from pointing at her, though her daughter just smiled. Tana smiled back and stopped in front of the closed doors of turbolift with a few other people.
Once off it, she made her way slowly through the transparisteel-lined walkway. It was nowhere near as crowded as the public transport dock, but given that this was Coruscant, there were always people around. She looked in the direction of the Temple even though she knew she was too far away to see it. Checking the time on her chronometer, she picked up her pace, and hurried to the turbolift, not wanting to keep her host family waiting longer than she had to. She stepped out into a quiet hallway, and headed down it, looking for Apartment 28. Once she reached it, she closed her eyes and ran through a quick relaxation exercise, hoping to calm her fears. Tana then knocked on the door, hoping that she wasn’t interrupting anything. An auburn-haired woman wearing a simple blue dress answered the door. She beamed at her and gestured her inside.
“You must be Tana Stanske. I’m Eilís Niadh.”
The padawan bowed respectfully and stepped warily into the room, ignoring the feeling that the woman was happy to see her. She may be. That didn’t mean the rest of her family was. She took a quick look around the room, seeing a simple seating arrangement of two couches facing each other separated by a long, low table. A small holoprojector was set against the wall on a slightly higher table at the end of the arrangement. There was a small, colorful box tucked in one corner next to one of the couches, with a soft red carpet in front of it. Tana heard giggling coming from another room and froze.
A child? No one had told her that she’d be living with children. She avoided the crèche as much as possible, not able to handle the noise and the mess. Silently and trying to hide her dread, she followed Eilís into the kitchen. There, the woman moved to one side of the table and put her hand on her husband’s shoulder. He glanced up at her and smiled in welcome when he spotted Tana. Eilís moved to the counter, where some food prep devices were scattered about.
“Welcome! I’m Matej, and this is Nikolaj,” nodding towards the young boy happily giggling and coloring in a book designed for the purpose. The boy didn’t even look up, too engrossed in what he was doing. “Don’t look so scared. None of us bite.”
Tana quietly said, “I haven’t spent much time around children.”
“You’ll get used to Nik fairly quickly. He can be a handful at times, but he’s a good kid.”
Tana nodded, not wanting to say anything else, and risk getting sent back to the Temple this early. She would make things work out. She wouldn’t be a disgrace to the Jedi. She would learn to handle a young child if it killed her.
“Why don’t I show you to your room?” Matej said, breaking into her thoughts. “That way, my wife can finish making dinner.”
Tana nodded and blinked in surprise when he didn’t stand up, but came around the table using a hoverchair. She simply moved aside for him and followed him down the short hall. “The refresher is across from Nik’s room. Our room is at the end of the hall. This one’s yours,” he said, keying the first door on the right open. He moved into the room and Tana stepped in after him.
It was approximately the same size as her room in the Temple, but was decorated in whites and pale blues instead of creams and browns. The sleep couch against the far right corner had a sky blue comforter on it, and the dresser and desk against the left wall were simple and made out of pale imitation wood. Tana nodded in approval and put her bags on one side of the door, out of Matej’s way.
“Dinner will be ready in a about half an hour. You should use the time to unpack,” Matej said and motored out of the room, letting the door close behind him. Tana telekinetically moved her bags onto the bed and walked over to the window. The sun was shining weakly through, so she keyed the sunshade lighter to let more sunlight in. She stood there, looking at the familiar yet foreign cityscape. It was overwhelming in a way, that she didn’t know her way around, and she’d be expected to make her way alone to the school she’d be attending. But she was a Padawan- it shouldn’t be that big of a deal. But this was the first time that she had been out of the Temple for more than a couple hours since the mission her master had taken her on when she was thirteen. And that had been a simple scholarly inquiry. They’d been back at the Temple a week later. She wasn’t ready for something like this. And that was the reason her Master had signed her up for the program.
She just wasn’t that adventurous. She was content staying at the Temple and learning things. That meant she didn’t know how to act around non-Jedi. She didn’t have the polished social skills Jedi were supposed to have. She even had problems talking to Jedi she didn’t know, and being around a school full of strangers was going to be hell. There was no possible way that she would be ready for school to start in the morning. None. But she didn’t have a choice.
Tana sighed and turned around. Matej was right- time to unpack. Given the little she had, she would be done before dinner. That way, she had all evening to learn about the family she’d be spending the next few months with, as well as a chance to find out as much about the area as possible, just in case.
Errik Chaloa was looking outside the building he had arrived and he saw a speeder on approach.
It landed and a kind man opened the door and said “hop in”
Errik said “I am Errik Chaloa”
The man said “Mark Meester and I am to be your host with my wife Celine. And you will meet my kids when we arrive at our place.”
Errik took a seat and the speeder zoomed off to a large appartment building.
At the top-floor was a parkingspace and after coming to a stop Errik and Mark exited the speeder.
A woman greeted Errik and said “I am Celine Meester”
“Ad” a young boy no more than 4 years old said.
“And I am Minouche” a 6 year old girl said.
Mark said “come Errik, I will show you your room”
Errik walked after Mark towards a small room with a bed, a fresher and a shelf to put his things on.
Mark said “get settled in and dinner is at 6”
Errik sat down on the bed and put his meagre belongings – a datapad, some books and civilian clothes on the shelf. He would don his civilian clothes once he would go to the Edjuan Co'nor Makneill public school and he was glad supplies had given him a nice cardigan sweather to wear with those large pockets. ‘Easy to hide my lightsaber because without it, I am feeling uncomfortable. Only in the OT of the healer’s ward I am leaving it in the scrub-room. Going to this school hm, let’s see what it brings.’
Dien-ku woke up early the next morning to the smell of caf brewing. He reached out with his senses and found that everyone in his host family were still sleeping soundly. The caf machine must be on a timer. The young padawan rose quietly, careful not to disturb Brand. Mr. Henders... Tod, I have to remember he wants to be called 'Tod'... was not exaggerating when he said his older son was not happy about the sleeping arrangements. In fact, it was an understatement. Even though Brand did not say anything rude... he had been polite, in fact... the padawan could feel anger and resentment resonate from the eldest Henders offspring. But then, it seems Brand is angry about life in general.
As the young man took his change of clothes into the refresher, he wondered what made his roomate so angry. The rest of the family seemed loving and content despite the little feuds the younglings got into. After showereing and changing into the civilian clothes provided him by the temple's quartermaster, he went back to the bedroom and put his folded pajamas near his pillow then quietly made the bed before slipping back out again.
He went into the living room and sat on the couch and closed his eyes, easily slipping into the calm state of meditation.
"Oh," Dien-ku opened his eyes at the startled exclamation to see Mrs. Henders standing just inside the living room near the hallway that led to the bedrooms and looking at him in surprise. She was wearing a fuzzy pink robe over silky pajamas and soft fuzzy pink slippers. Curlers were in her hair, and she self consciously put her hand up to touch them to see if they were in place.
"I'm sorry, ma'am. I didn't mean to scare you." The padawan said softly as he stood.
"That's all right, I just wasn't expecting anyone to be up yet... did Brand kick you out of his room?" There was a warning hint of reprimand for her eldest son if what she suspected was the case.
"Oh no," Dien-ku smiled. "I just woke up early and came out here so I wouldn't disturb him."
There was relief in her voice as she turned on the light. "That's considerate of you. He had better appreciate it. Did you sleep well, hon?"
"Very well, thank you."
As Mrs. Henders went into the kitchen to prepare breakfast, Dien-ku politely leant her a hand. "Do you always get up so early?"
"Yes ma'am..."
"Please, call me Tanj." She gently reminded him.
"Ok... Tanj... my master and I get up early and meditate for awhile, then I make him breakfast."
"So padawan's are like servants to the knights?" The question was one of curiosity.
"Oh, no," Dien-ku's tone was one of surprise. "Padawans and their masters are more like mentors and students or apprentices... and actually most of us become closer. I love Master Demarc like... well, I guess he's like a father to me. When he first chose me to be his padawan, he never ate breakfast, so he didn't prepare it when we first started, and I um... introduced him to the importance of the morning meal." There was a gleam of warm humor in the boy's eyes as well as affection in his voice.
Tanj smiled over at the boy. "That must have been quite an adjustment on both of your parts."
Dien-ku chuckled softly. "Yeah, but it is worth it. He's taught me so much." He sighed as he thought about Ca'es Demarc and hoped the exchange student read the note he had left asking him to look after his master by preparing breakfast for him.
"You miss him, don't you?"
Dien-ku nodded. "Yes, but I enjoy being here, too. When does the rest of the family awaken?"
"Oh, Tod should be rising soon, and in a couple minutes I'll have to wake the younglings. Could you go wake Brand for me, please, and tell him breakfast will be ready in five minutes?"
"Yes ma... I mean, Tanj."
There was no response when Dien-ku tried waking Brand simply by speaking his name a few times, his volume increasing with each utterance of his roommate's name. He hesitated at the side of the bed before reaching out and shaking the other boy's shoulder.
The result was striking.
Literally.
The sleeping teenager woke with a start and blindly struck out at the padawan. Dien-ku was fast, however, and Brand's punch missed him, but landed with a painful thud against the nightstand. Even as Brand let out a long string of expletives and shook his hand which throbbed agonizingly, Dien-ku caught the toppling lamp before it fell to the floor.
"Don't EVER touch me again, jedi." The teenager growled.
"I'm sorry, your mother told me to wake you."
"Well, next time just call my name."
"I did... five times."
"Well, can't you use the force or something?"
"I could, but that would be cheating." Master Demarc had taught him not to use the Force when he could do something without it. Your ability to use the Force is not a toy to be played with, but is a responsibility. Your powers should not be used frivolously. Was his master's favorite lecture whenever he was caught displaying a untoward use of the Force.
"Whatever, don't touch me."
"Okay." Dien-ku shrugged. "Your mother also said breakfast would be ready in five minutes." With that, he left the room as much to get away from his agemate's hostility as to give him some privacy.
Soon, everybody was sitting around the table, eating breakfast. Dien-ku was surprised by how quiet everyone was with the exception of little Tam who cheerfully jabbered incoherantly with his mouth full. The toddler seemed to get more food on his face and bib than he did in his mouth.
"Close your mouth when you chew, hon." Tanj's gentle admonishment was directed toward Tam.
The three-year-old obeyed for a couple minutes before he thought of something else to say and forgot the instructions in the light of the more interesting observation that there was a fly buzzing around the kitchen. Food sprayed out of his mouth as he made the important announcement, "Fwy fwying awound! Lookie!"
When breakfast was over, Dien-ku offered to help clean up, but Tanj thanked him politely. "It's Kaya's turn for that."
Kaya, who had been sleepy-eyed and quiet until then smirked. "Well, if our guest really enjoys helping out, I can't see why we should deprive him of his happiness."
The padawan laughed even as the girl's mother firmly told her to do as she was told. He whispered to the girl, "Nice try," as she rolled her eyes and passed him while taking dishes to the sink.
Soon, Dien-ku left with Brand to go to school.
Tana rolled over and looked blearily at the beeping datapad set on her desk across the room. It couldn’t be time to get up already... It seemed like she had only just gotten to sleep. But like the good Padawan she was, she didn’t destroy the alarm with the Force. She simply turned it off, rolled out of bed, grabbed a tan tunic and brown slacks from her dresser, and hurried into the refresher. After a quick shower, she headed out to the front room, where Matej was preparing breakfast. She joined him, letting him tell her about the food prep area and where everything was located.
“We’ll go out food shopping later this week. That way, you can pick out some of your favorite foods, and teach us how to cook it if we don’t know how.”
She nodded, and put the platter of food on the table. Bare seconds after that, Eilís came into the room, carrying Nik. She smiled when she saw the plate of steaming food and let her son out of her arms. He ran to his father and gave him a hug, before running to his chair. Matej joined his son at the table, and quickly filled his plate before he could knock over his glass. The two women joined them, the younger one following hesitantly before taking the last seat.
“These are very good. Did you make them?”
“I helped, ma’am. Your husband did most of the work.”
Eilís nodded and said, “You’re nervous, aren’t you?”
“I’m not supposed to be. We’re supposed to control their emotions. But I don’t know what I’m doing, or what I’m supposed to do, or what the other students will think of me. So, yes, I am.”
“It’s perfectly okay to be nervous in a new situation, especially since you’ve never really been exposed to life outside the Jedi Temple. I’d be surprised if your fellow Padawans are any less nervous, no matter their experience. This is new for all of you,” Matej said.
Tana smiled weakly, but kept her thoughts to herself. He didn’t understand. The other Padawans were probably glad to be there, and they’d probably all been out on missions. They knew what to expect from non-Jedi. They probably had things to talk about with the other students. What could she talk about that was interesting? Absolutely nothing, unless any of them were interested in pre-Republic history, or classic Corellian literature, or half a dozen dead languages, or ... She cut off that train of thought, knowing it would just make her more nervous.
“You ready to go?” Matej asked.
“Just have to grab my datapad and boots from my room.”
Eilís nodded and hurried her son out of the room to grab his own school supplies. The two of them left a couple minutes later after saying their goodbyes. Tana helped Matej clean the kitchen, and went back to her room to grab her datapad. She looked at it, and put it in its bag, along with one novel. Just in case no one wants to talk to me, she told herself, knowing she could very well end up reading it as a way to avoid talking. She glanced over at her belt, and the lightsaber hanging off it, and grabbed it. She buckled it on, and met Matej at the door. He just raised his eyebrows at it, but said nothing. She followed him to the docking bay, and sat down in the passenger seat while he maneuvered his hoverchair inside and locked it in place. He started the vehicle and used hand controls to accelerate and leave the garage. Once in the traffic lanes, he turned to her, trusting the autopilot and collision avoidance systems to guide them safely to the school.
“Don’t forget- you’re taking the shuttle the rest of the time, starting this afternoon. I’m just glad your school was on the way to my appointment so you had a chance to collect yourself.”
Tana nodded and looked ahead, trying to use a relaxation technique to calm down. But it wasn’t working very well, especially when the vehicle slowed down and Matej took over the controls. She looked over at the building in front of them. There were plenty of individual vehicles landing and taking off, as well as shuttles. This was it. The Edjuan Co'nor Makneill public school. The school where she’d spend the next few months.
Matej joined the landing queue and hovered silently, leaving Tana to look around at the growing student body. She looked at the colorful outfits, the glittering accessories, even the shoes. She looked down at herself and sighed. She couldn’t even dress right. Too late to change now, not that she had anything to change into. Finally, Matej was able to park and let her out.
“I know you’re nervous, Tana, but you’ll find friends. Have fun... and may the Force be with you.”
She turned around and smiled in thanks, too nervous to talk. Then she moved out of the way so he could safely take off and walked a little farther into the small courtyard. She hugged the small bag containing her datapad to herself and stopped, looking at the milling and noisy crowd. No one was paying any attention to her, something which she was a little grateful for. Tana took a deep breath and slowly let it out. She was here, and there was no going back.
“Ding, dong, ding, dong, ding, dong, ding, dong, ding, dong, ding, dong, ding, dong”
Errik opened his eyes and saw that the door to his room was already open. He had seen the large clock in the main room of the apartment but only now he noticed the noise it made. Seven times ding, dong meant wake-up time for him.
He went to the fresher and after shaving and washing he dressed in the comfortable civilian clothes. ‘But I will keep my Jedi-boots’ Errik thought and he donned them and the sweather. His lightsaber went into the left pocket and the datapad in the other.
Going to the main room he greeted Mr. and Mrs. Meester.
Ad and Minouche were talking exited about their school and just finishing their bowls of porridge.
Errik got porridge too and Ad asked “can you tell us more stories?”
Errik remembered the stories he had told them yesterday after diner and answered “this afternoon after I come back from school.”
Minouche said “yes that’s nice and again a story about that owl.”
Errik said “promised.”
Errik finished his breakfast and Mark took him and Minouche and Ad towards the speeder.
Minouche and Ad were the first to go to their school and Mark guided the speeder towards the Edjuan Co'nor Makneill public school.
Errik got out after Mr. Meester said “I will be there when school ends this afternoon.”
Errik walked to the smal courtyard and saw a girl all alone.
When Jorya awoke the next morning, at first she thought she was in the midst of a dream. Here she was lying in the most comfortable bed she'd ever slept in and in a setting that was more opulent than anything she'd seen. She stared at the pattern of the ceiling for a while, before her mind caught with her. Jorya sat up fully concious and looked around. She remembered everything; meeting her father, the whole exchange program, and the emotional dinner the previous night. She was also aware that today would be her first day at Edjuan Co'nor Makneill school.
Jorya was still uncertain about this whole exchange program, but as there was nothing she could do about it, she decided that she should be getting ready. Realizing that she had a couple of hours to go before school started, Jorya did her best to meditate. Meditation was not always something that came easily to her, but Jorya was hoping it would come easily today. She really needed something to settle her nerves, but meditating did nothing to help. So instead, she decided to explore the mansion.
If it wasn't for the fact that Jorya was a Jedi, she knew without a doubt that she would've been lost in the home in a heartbeat. She counted at least 57 rooms and 24 freshers, and that didn't include the 7 studies and library. Nor did it include the large dining room, kitchen and 2 living rooms. And every single room was as expensively furnished as her own room. She wondered just HOW rich her family was.
Returning to her room, Jorya quickly changed out of her pajamas and into her Jedi robes. She really didn't feel that comfortable wearing the normal clothing in the dresser, and the other students were going to find out that she was a Jedi anyway. She put her lightsaber on her utility belt, only wondering vaguely if she would get in trouble for carrying it in a normal school.
She walked downstairs and entered the dining room where the kitchen staff had set out a dizzing array of breakfast foods. Jorya was never much of a breakfast eater and her nerves were affecting her appetite, but at the same time she knew how important that meal was. So Jorya selected a plump muja fruit and began to eat it.
"Hello Jorya," Brev said entering the dining room and sitting down with a large plate of food in front of him.
"Good morning, Father," Jorya replied after swallowing her bite of fruit.
"Did you sleep well?" Brev asked.
Jorya nodded.
"Well when you're ready to go to school Sela's driver Tavu will take you," Brev replied.
Jorya threw away her fruit core and grabbed her bag. "Well I'll see you later."
"Have a good day at school."
Jorya exited the luxury speeder and slung her bag over her shoulder. She glanced at the multitude of students and wondered what their reactions to the Jedi padawans would be. She also looked around trying to see if there was a familiar face in the crowd. Well it was time to go, and soon all her questions would be answered.
