Eeep, I missed a lot of updates. Sorry; college work + sickness = tardiness, I'm afraid.

I loved these last updates. So many twists! I salute you, sah, on your excellent writing and especially on your intricate storyline. I'm a fan. Looking forward to more - I really want to find out what's going on. This story's got me hooked, and that doesn't happen very often!

Chapter Thirteen: Missing Persons

Kelona 7, 1535
Reishh Shipyards
Bortelles, Corellia

This.

This is the worst.

This is the
worst kriffing week of my bloody life.

And what could possibly happen to me now that I’ve been kidnapped by a crime lord and stuffed in a dark, locked, windowless room? Well, for one I could be with that idiot Corellian.

Oh wait. That’s right.

“Jav?” Remy groaned.

“Shut up.”

“Roger that.” He pulled himself uneasily to his feet, got light-headed, and fell back against the wall for support. He slid down until he was sitting across from the Duro, whose legs were crossed as though he was preparing to meditate. “How did you get here?” he asked.

“What happened to the shutting up?”

“I lied. As for me, DaRusso bashed me over the head with my own alcohol. I don’t even drink non-socially, but that put me off it for good. I’m also never taking up the electric quetarra, thanks to you.”

“A huge loss to the musical galaxy, I’m sure.”

“My garage-based Max Rebo tribute band is gonna be upset. We were all set to start learning instruments.”

“Your what?”

“You gotta stop taking me seriously.”

“I assure you that is not a problem.” Jav sighed. “Zelvyn Judas brought me here. He killed Kavuertes.”

“Blast. DaRusso is the one who sold the briefcase to June. He kept the creds to pay off a merc he owed for a gambling debt. Turns out they were counterfeit. Though I imagine the Royal will be taking care of that for him now.”

“What in the galaxy was Benali doing with a case full of fake creds?” Jav wondered. “And where did he get them? And why didn’t the killer take them?”

“Sounds an awful lot like the questions we were asking when we thought they were real.”

“Still; it’s one step closer.”

“What about me?”

“What about you?”

“Before Kaede died, you said the connection between Sonar and Benali is me. Do you think I have something to do with this?”

Jav hesitated. “No, but I think this may have something to do with you. It seems hard to believe that two separate unconnected individuals with slugthrowers target your temporary partner, and your permanent one, in the span of a few days.”

Remy raised an eyebrow. “Worried for your own life?”

“Yes,” he answered plainly. “And you may be in danger too. If that theory’s right, this person could go after either of us next.”

“Well thank goodness we’ve got four thick walls around us.” Remy patted the durasteel surface behind him.

“You’re taking this a bit cavalierly.”

“Cavalier is my middle name,” Remy said. “You can’t even imagine the teasing at the schoolyard. Full name, of course, being Remy Cavalier Diabet, Now With More Real Butter Flavor.” He paused. “The First,” he added.

“I’ve read your file, and it lists no record of a name change.”

“Jav, the fact that you mean that is both the best and worst thing.”

“Alright.”

“Only child, I suppose?”

“Yes. How do you know?”

“Let’s just call it detection.”

“My father died when I was very young.”

“Same here.”

“My mother worked two jobs; I hardly saw her.”

“Mine was a nurse.”

“The only other family I had was an uncle. My father’s brother.”

“Well there’s a whole Diabet clan near what used to be Iodef, so…”

“Of course he wasn’t around much either. Always traveling on business.”

“What did he do?”

“Auditor. Taxes, finance…”

“Don’t tell Sonar. He spent his adolescence surrounded by people like that investigating the Begg family business.”

“…Right.”

They lapsed into awkward silence, made worse by the darkness depriving them of even anything much to look at beyond their own hands.

“The Imperial investigator they sent after you is a real jerk,” Remy said suddenly with his best attempt at a casual tone.

“Investigator?”

“Yeah; he’s the one who told Greeres you aren’t a cop.”

“I am a cop.”

“Correction: You were a cop; you just kept the badge and gun.”

“As long as we’re retreading old territory, would you care to try and arrest me again?” Jav held out his wrists as if to be cuffed. Remy didn’t respond. He dropped his hands to his side again. “The Empire has its claws deep in the Duro police department. It’s beginning here too. I was going to be wrongfully imprisoned right there in that dam; I could see that. Merely fired if I was lucky. And I didn’t have time to go through a review, court martial, five years of jail time, whatever they’d decide to throw at me. Benali didn’t have time.”

“So you took this case out of your desire for justice?”

“Yes. Mera Benali is paying my expenses.”

“You’re a freaking P.I.”

“Well I’m not licensed or anything.”

Remy buried his face in his hands. “Oh come on!”

“I had little choice if I wanted to solve this case and continue eating regularly.”

Remy went quiet. At length, he asked, “Am I judgmental?”

“Come again?”

“Like, judging other people, um, morally?”

Jav repeated the question in his own way. “Are you looking down your nose like some kind of high and mighty moral arbiter, despite all your own ethical flaws which make your judging glare both obnoxious and hypocritical?”

“Yeah.”

“Definitely.”

Remy’s reaction was delivered as mildly as Jav’s decision. “I was afraid of as much.”

“I read your file before coming here; you’re not exactly one to pick out a vigilante,” Jav said, his voice still without malice.

“When the Royal owns the cops…” Remy started.

“When the system’s corrupt?” Jav interrupted.

Remy paused at that. “Okay; I get it now.”

Jav was surprised at himself for how glad he felt for the Corellian to understand. He showed neither emotion. “Anyway, you were saying about the investigator?”

“Eh?”

“The Imp.”

“Oh, right, Lydon.”

Jav sat up. “Synth Lydon?”

Remy frowned. “Yeah. You know him?”

“We were academy roommates.”

“Judging by his uniform, and what I know of you, it musta been one clean room.”

“It won an award our sophomore year.” Jav toyed with a loose strand of material on a bacta patch on his arm. “He was my partner, in the Duro police. He was my best friend. After him, Kroma Sheik – who’s surely in prison by now – and his partner Edairu Benali. You know where Benali is now.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Why? You haven’t done anything.”

“Yeah, and that was enough.”

“You humans don’t make much sense,” observed Jav. “Corellians even less.”

“It’s a point of cultural pride. We also love fast ships and liquor and hate odds.”

“And you?”

“Love fast ships. Prefer caf to liquor. Pretty blasé on odds.”

“Then you wouldn’t mind that there’s essentially no chance we’re getting out of this alive?”

“My strong desire to live long enough to see the Division 29 fall premiere overrules my indifference toward odds in this case.”

“And where does that blaster… thing come in?”

Remy glared. “Jav, what you’re going to do is you’re gonna back right the kriff out of my face.”

The Duro held up his three-fingered hands in surrender. “Alright, we won’t talk about it.”

The two cops sat in silence for a full three minutes.

Remy sighed. “We’re going to talk about it, aren’t we?”

“Indubitably.”

“Okay, but that means we talk about something that makes you uncomfortable too,” Remy said with an aggressive jab of his index finger in Jav’s direction.

Jav snorted. “Are you kidding? We just had a whole thing of me being emotionally vulnerable. It is absolutely your turn.”

“Our lives are some kind of game now, with turns?”

“Well Cavalier is your middle name.”

“It actually isn’t.”

“What?”

“Never mind.”

Forensics Lab Room B, Bortelles CorSec Primary
Bortelles, Corellia

Synth Lydon stepped into the lab with fists buried deep in the pockets of his long gray trenchcoat. To Meih’s thinking, he so fully embodied the Grave Imperial Investigator cliché, it bordered on parody. “Investigator Lydon?”

“Yes…” He paused at the name tag on her lab coat. “I’m sorry, Diabet. Is that relation to…?”

“Remy’s my brother,” she said quickly. “Have you learned anything, about his disappearance?”

“Nothing since he stopped answering his commlink and Detective DaRusso found his apartment empty,” he answered. “And what of the slug from the Benali case?”

Meih gave the man a leery look. “I thought you were here to arrest Jav Yonx.”

“Yes, that’s why I came. I suppose solving the Benali and Begg cases – and now Diabet – are just to keep my mind occupied while I find Yonx.

“By the way, the drowned unidentified human male who just arrived in the morgue? On the way in, I saw his body being carted by. He’s a mob lord’s bookie and he wasn’t drowned; he was shot execution-style. Check his head for a wound under false skin, and lungs for tampering.”

Meih’s nose scrunched up. “I’ll… ah… consider that in my report.”

“So,” Synth prompted, “the slug?”

“Right. We came up with a result on the Imperial database that you may find interesting.” Meih tossed her ponytail over her shoulder and directed Synth to a white monitor on a white table.

Synth stared at the screen in silence. The smugness was gone from his expression, replaced with a dumbfounded gaping. “Oh.

Hmm. What did she show to Synth? Hmmm...

Thanks for the PM. Much appreciated.

Wow, that was great! I loved the banter between Jav and Remy. You write them really well. In places, actually, your writing reminds me of Allston's.

And I really like Meih, actually. But then, you give all your characters a distinct life of their own, which I can only admire. I'm still really enjoying this!

Chapter Fourteen: Behind Closed Doors

Kelona 7, 1749
Reishh Shipyards
Bortelles, Corellia

I wouldn’t have picked sitting alone in the dark with Diabet out of a list of activities as a desirable option.

But, as it would turn out, removing the “dark” and “alone” factors only made things worse.

The door opened, and the lights came on.

Both Jav and Remy were still blinking to adjust as five men entered the room, which could now be seen to be an unused storage room of the Reishh warehouse. The walls were plain durasteel gray, and the light was set in a rectangular hanging fixture.

Jav squinted in an effort to discern their hosts’ identities. One was a bounty hunter in full forest-green body armor, including helmet. One was a Gran with a scar on his right cheek. One was an Ortolan with red eyes and sniffling blue nose. One was a twitchy pale Twi’lek with daggers sheathed in his belt and boot. The last was a middle-aged Corellian smoothing his military-cut silver hair. This was Welc Ryred.

“Royal,” Remy spat.

“Detective,” he returned with a smooth tone. His voice was poisoned white wine. He turned and nodded to Jav. “Detective.” He indicated the hunter at his right. “This is Wynt Tlach; perhaps you know him.”

“What do you want?” the Duro asked. “Why have you brought us here?”

“I agree; we should get right down to the point,” the Royal replied, apparently having a parallel conversation with some alternate Jav. He glanced at Tlach. “The point?”

Tlach stepped forward as the crime boss stepped back. Without ceremony or words, he threw his elbow into Jav’s neck wound while jamming the side of his hand into the back of Remy’s knee. Remy fell as Tlach swung his arm up and around to deliver his fist into the back of the cop’s head. Jav struck back and quickly regretted it. He clutched aching fingers while Tlach’s armor wasn’t so much as scuffed. Tlach raised a baton crackling with electrical energy. He jabbed it full-force into Jav’s gut, sending blue-white currents rippling over the Duro. Tlach stood between the two fallen cops, still silent.

“I can hurt you,” the Royal informed them, “badly. In here, in this city, I make the rules. I am the king, and you are not showing proper fealty. As a matter of fact, you’re party to a plot for a coup.”

Remy started to get up from his knees. Tlach slammed the baton into his back.

That, detectives, is the point.”

“And I still have no idea what you’re talking about,” Jav said with a cough.

“What did Djerro Begg give you?” the Royal asked. “We’re not speaking of a careless man. He had something in place to give you a hard copy. A datacard? What? What has he passed on to you?”

“Nothing,” Remy lied.

Tlach grabbed Remy’s collar and lifted to straighten his back. His armored foot landed in Remy’s gut wound.

“Our mutual friend Gil Tresler died last night,” the Royal informed him sadly. “Drowned.” He looked at Jav and Remy, in turn. “What do you know about Begg’s work?”

Remy glared up at the older man. “His scrapbooking hobby? Beautiful work. He had this one with pictures of you and him. Page was labeled Best Friends Forever. I admit, I was jealous at first…” His words turned into a horrible scream as electricity coursed through him. Tlach lifted the baton and spun it in his gloved hand.

“Detective Yonx, perhaps you would care to be more cooperative about what you know,” the Royal suggested.

Jav, wobbling weakly on his knees, took a ragged breath. “You can’t keep me here.”

A bemused smile crept across the Royal’s face. “You still don’t understand Bortelles, do you, detective? The most important thing about Bortelles to you right now, is the fact that yes I can.

Jav coughed and wiped the blood from his chin. “And here’s the thing about me, Mr. Ryred. I am a fugitive from Duro. More importantly, I am a fugitive being chased by Synth Lydon. You don’t know that name yet, but now that he’s an Imperial investigator? Trust me, Ryred, you will, and you’ll wish you hadn’t.

“You may be a sacred untouchable to local CorSec, but to the Empire, you and this city are just a two-cred crook and a crumb on the map. Lydon will find me, and he’ll kill any criminals in his path. You included.

“He and I don’t live in your kingdom.”

Another jolt downed the Duro. The punch to his jaw was only to remind him when he woke up later.

“How long before you figure they’ll come back and torture us some more?” Remy asked idly.

Jav moaned.

“I hope it’s fairly soon. I’ve thought up some real zingers and I don’t have anything to write them down on. If he waits too long to come back, I might forget some. Like, I had a Royal pun a few minutes ago, but I can’t remember it for the life of me.”

Jav sat up. His voice was gravelly as he asked Remy a question. “Are you stupid?”

“Nope. Neurotic.”

“Ah. Well, it seems you’re going to be talking and there’s nothing I can do to stop you. So maybe you could get to that blaster-based neurosis?”

“Okay, okay, fine. It’s… It’s not that I’ve got a traditional phobia. I just… I aim it and suddenly I’m too nauseous to shoot straight. You’re the first person I’ve done more than stun.”

“What a… dubious honor.”

“Congratulations. I… I don’t know, alright? I’ve talked to plenty of CorSec psychiatrists… and seen plenty of ‘em quit… Anyway, point is I’m no closer to comfortable with the things.” He folded his arms and rested them on his knees. “I don’t want to be comfortable with them,” he added quietly. “A man who shoots a gun and doesn’t feel it, ends up being not much of a man at all.”

“…Kaede was important to you, wasn’t she?”

Remy looked up to insult the Duro, but saw only compassion in his big eyes. He sighed. “We dated for nearly a year, up until two weeks ago. She has a family – two kid sisters and a brother. She’s raised them since their parents were in a speeder accident. Her siblings’ lives were the Royal’s leverage on her. That’s why she gave him information. Not to further her career, or get extra credits. To save her family.

“Sith.” Remy buried his face in his hands. Please, Force, universe, whatever… leave Meih out of this.

The door slid open.

Remy didn’t bother looking. “The answer’s the same, scumbag.”

A female voice answered back. “I’ve never felt more appreciated.”

The cops turned. Standing in the doorway was a slender woman in a form-fitting black uniform. In her hand was a silenced NetAim 18 – a weapon typically reserved for spies and assassins. “Well?” she said. “Do you wanna be rescued or not?”

Remy raised his hand. “Yes please.”

“Alright then. Come with me if you want to live.”

Jav and Remy stood, exchanged a glance, and followed the stranger. They struggled to keep up as she ran down the hallway. “Who are you?” Jav asked.

“Your guardian kriffin’ angel.” At the far end of the hallway, a Rodian stepped into view from an adjacent corridor. She raised her blaster and fired a single silenced bolt into his head. “…Of death,” she added. “Keep up.”

“Kind of injured here,” Jav groaned.

“We’ve had a rough day,” Remy said.

“There was the speeder chase and lightfight…”

“The quetarra to the head…”

“The blaster bolt to the gut…”

“The ale bottle to the head…”

“The capture by Zelvyn Judas…”

“The armored fist to the head…”

“The torture…”

“The quetarra to the head…”

Jav looked at Remy. “You already said that.”

“Did I?” he snapped. His voice steadily rose as he said, “I guess I’ve been hit on the head too many times to remember!

The woman glanced back at them. “Let’s escape a little more quietly. And with less whining.”

The trio rounded a corner, and found themselves facing none other than Wynt Tlach, in his full armor. A slugthrower in hand, he looked them up and down. “We’ve been waiting,” he growled.

She replied, “One got through, a Rodian. I had to space him. Slipping in your old age, Tlach?”

“Yeah, yeah…”

He raised his arm toward Remy and Jav, who were fleeing the other direction. A grapnel shot out from the gauntlet, latching onto Remy’s collar. The line went taut and the Corellian fell. It reeled Remy in across the floor toward Tlach. The woman turned around, hit a switch on her NetAim, and put a red dot over Jav’s back. A stun bolt lanced out and felled the Duro. She glanced down at a struggling, cursing Remy, and put another in him.

“He wouldn’t shut up while I was beating him either,” Tlach remarked.

“Just load them onto the speeder,” she instructed. “We don’t have much time, and it’s a long drive.”

I don’t know much about the effects of being repeatedly violently rendered unconscious, but I can’t imagine they’re good. I can, however, imagine they must be happening to me by now. First from wounds inflicted by the Royal’s goons and Diabet, at Kavuertes’s door. Then by being slammed into Kavuertes’s door, by Judas. And now stunned by some mystery woman apparently working with Wynt Tlach. What did they want?

I was about to find out.

“Good evening.”

The woman who’d stunned them about an hour earlier stood before Jav and Remy with an incessantly cheery expression. Jav looked around her in an effort to determine where they were. The durasteel walls, insufficient lighting, and musty smell felt all too familiar. The only apparent advantage over their previous locale was that it was far less constricting. One wall seemed to go on forever. Jav realized what it was. “Metro station?”

“A nice abandoned one too,” a deep voice answered. Its owner stepped forward out of the shadows, a large bald man with dark skin. “How was the ride?” asked Djerro “Sonar” Begg.

Jav’s jaw dropped.

Remy turned to face the Duro. “I told you he was alive.”

Okay. I confess. I got behind. blush Put it down to an impending move, work, and laziness. Yeah, you heard me. Laziness! tongue

Anyway, it was kind of cool to get to read TWO updates at one time. And then the ending of the second update was...superb!

WOW

I love that Remy and Jav have been rescued but couldn't you have given them a more traditional, non violent escape? tongue

Great update
