'SPLOSIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! grin grin grin grin Things that go BOOM are Dorothea's FAVE!

Ahem...anyway, my review:

Another voice came on the comm now, one that shot Greeres to his feet in horror. “Oh Force…”
WHAT??? Who's voice was that?? auuuuuugh!

“Check CorSec’s official word on that; the bogeyman doesn’t exist.”
REEEally? Maybe they should put on their big boy glasses and TAKE ANOTHER LOOK.

“We am partners. But he is busy in destroying his liver.”
Hahahaha...

“Well,” Tavil said carefully as he eyed Remy’s shaky hand, “what, pray tell, were you planning to do next?”
A 'SPLOSION, maybe? batting pweeeease?

Fan-freakin'-tastic post, Nathan! I can't wait to see what happens next! *hugs*

“We am partners. But he is busy in destroying his liver.”

Hee! I like the way he talks.

Shivalla stuffed the Benali casefile into her jacket. “You’re the investigator.” She stepped to one side, continuing to keep her blaster trained on Meih’s forehead. “Figure it out.”

Awww, poor Meih. Nice comeback from Shivalla, though!

Whew, the tension keeps building at SynMal! I'm with Jedi_Eruanne...a 'splosion would be fun! grin

Wonderful update! applause

Whoa, everything is heading for some serious fireworks here. I sure don't envy anyone caught in the middle (like Jav and Remy).

And it sounds like you’ll just have to be a little more creative this evening than usual.

Huh, so Greeres has done this for the Royal before...? Though it sounds like now the Royal has some pretty heavy leverage on him. A family member, I wonder? Like he did with Kaede? In any event, it ain't good for Greeres.

Shivalla hesitated. “The… margins were impeccable.”

LOL! grin

I really liked Shivalla's last line here to Synth, too. Getting out of a police station is going to be a challenging feat, but maybe she'll get to put her sneak skills to better use now.

“Well,” Tavil said carefully as he eyed Remy’s shaky hand, “what, pray tell, were you planning to do next?”

Poor Remy, he's really in a hard spot now. I have to wonder if he'd prefer the explosion to needing to fire a blaster. tongue

Excellent update! applause I'm looking forward to more! grin

Chapter Seventeen

Face posted:

“If cops are heroes, call me a private eye,” Jav requested with a glance at the cloudy evening sky. “’Cause heroes die.”

I loved this line. That first bit of dialogue has all the hallmarks of a signature one-liner for the entire series, and it made me get all excited for what was to come. And of course, in your stories these things are always balanced by a down-to-earth and comedic counter-line from Remy laugh

Uh-oh. Seems to me like the Royal is going to be pretty cranky that somebody bumped off his wife worried Haha, and more 'typing impressions as I go' humour: as soon as I typed that I read this line:

Face posted:

His commlink went to his mouth, and his voice came in a growl. “We are destroying SynMal tonight. I want every man, woman, and alien in that building to burn.”

And what an end to the chapter grin

Chapter Eighteen

I loved the implied history between Greers and The Royal, and their cordial little conversation on the comm. That sort of thing really adds depth to a story like this, where the characters are all caught up in the same run of events.

Face posted:
The gangster’s voice came back a little raspier. “Someone beat you to it, and now here we are. A couple desperate old ghosts. Don’t let us down, Jek.”

I love how the Royal is characterised. He's easily worthy of profic villain status. This is the best I've ever seen a GN villain portrayed - and to cap it all, he's not even the main villain. I can't commend you enough on the impression the Royal has left on me.

I loved Shivalla's confrontation with Synth. I suppose posing as an Imperial Investigator is bound to be a difficult thing to do, especially when your opponent just happens to be the galaxy's greatest genius. In. My. Opinion.

Face posted:
We entered the building saying very little, which is saying a lot – for Remy, at least.

laugh applause Maybe it's just the time of day, but bravo, I loved this line grin

I also enjoyed Tavil's casual perception of their facade. And the standoff. And the Royal with his finger on the button to send the whole scene to hell. This next chapter is going to be an enormous one grin

Which I can barely wait for. Barely!

Eruanne: Boom is an onomotapoeia brimming with wonderful possibilities. mischief

’chick: Everything I know about Selonians I learned from Wookieepedia, so I was just faking my way by on Citec’s dialogue.

Thumper: Yeah, Greeres is a dirty cop like everyone else on the force (Remy and Sonar notwithstanding). He used to be like those two, but he’s finally been beaten down by the job at this point in life. It might be kind of interesting to get into what it was that finally took him reluctantly to the crooked side. thinking

If you’re going to guess something about Synth’s report, impeccable margins is a pretty safe bet. tongue

KELIA: The Imperials just need to organize some team-building seminars. I can see Palpatine trust-falling into Vader’s arms now.

Futon: Very glad you like the Royal here. It’s a bit accidental how he’s come to feature so much in the Noir-verse (notably here and in Escape from Perdition), but I’m glad I’ve been able to flesh him out sufficiently.

His history with Greeres (two old men – well, middle-aged men – in a story filled with rookies) is a part of that. Despite Jek’s hate for the man, and the Royal’s ambivalence in return, the amount of common experiences over the years connects them in a weird way. They can reminisce about the good ol’ days when they tried to kill each other. tongue

Wow, two cliffhangers! Ah, the excitement!

Love the interaction between Synth and Shivalla. It's enjoyable to see them go up against each other, can't wait to see how that one goes.

This time the guards followed the two cops into Petric Tavil’s cold unadorned office. Remy winced. “Hey Tavil. Can you leave your goons outside while the adults talk?”

The businessman raised an eyebrow. “Will you be excusing yourself as well?”

Just one of many, many great exchanges in this story. *lol* You write dialogue really well. And I love all the witty comebacks, it's something I miss even in a lot of pro-writing. In all honesty, this story's miles better than a lot of published ones I've read. No kidding. I really enjoy your writing.

Chapter Nineteen: Standoffs

Kelona 8, 1811
SynMal Trading Company Bortelles Branch
Bortelles, Corellia

“Well, what, pray tell, were you planning to do next?” asked Petric Tavil as Remy, Jav, and the two SynMal guards aimed weapons – Remy at Tavil, Jav at the guards, and the guards at the two back-to-back ex-cops.

“I was rather hoping we could all get in a circle, grab hands, and work together to undo the knot without letting go,” Remy said. “Then, trust falls!”

“Remy…” Jav growled.

The Corellian glanced back at him. “You’d drop me on the trust fall, wouldn’t you?”

“Yes.”

“I suppose it’s a kind of trust to know that you would.”

“Not really.”

“What has you so standoffish?”

“It’s probably the standoff we’re in.”

“Ah. Yes. That would do it.”

Tavil cleared his throat. “If I may interrupt this two-man comedy of errors…”

“You’re one to talk,” replied Remy. “Preferring the Daily is the biggest joke of this whole affair. The Tribune’s reporters are so much more attractive. Y’ seen Talia Sionis? You don’t have to answer that. How about Ibanez?

The businessman flinched.

“You recognize that name. You should; you were planning on selling him Imperial secrets. You cut up his arms interrogating him. You were going to meet him in Parking Garage B on the afternoon of Kelona 2 to make the deal.”

Jav spoke next. “Except he didn’t leave the parking garage alive. You killed him, Tavil, because somewhere along the line, you found out he was a Duro cop named Edairu Benali, who was undercover working to take you down. So you took him out first.”

Tavil laughed, soft and low. “I contemplated murdering Benali,” he said. “That I’ll admit. But I’ve looked into his background. His partner, Kroma Sheik.”

“You don’t know anything about Kroma Sheik,” Jav hissed.

Tavil said, “I know he came across data that had to do with what I was selling Benali. I know he made contact with a secretive rebellion-minded faction. I know the transport taking him to Kessel was hit on the morning of Kelona 5 with a terrorist attack that supposedly left no survivors. Sheik is alive and well, this I know. That is how they work.

“Of course, all that came about after Benali’s death. If I’d known he would have contacts with that group, I would have sold him the information. As it was, he was going to use it to give me up to CorSec – effectively the Empire. So I decided to kill him.

“You see, detectives, I’m not a Rebel. I’m not even really a crime lord. I’m a war profiteer. And for business to run smoothly, the conflict must be prolonged. Right now that means feeding the insurgency. When they become too powerful, it’ll mean taking Imperial jobs. It’s a matter of balance. The Empire is building something to tip the scales so far, there won’t be a war to profit from.”

Remy raised an eyebrow. “And where does killing Sonar fit into that?”

“I didn’t kill your friend,” Tavil said. “What I’m trying to tell you is that I didn’t even kill Benali. I was beaten to it. I haven’t held a blaster in years.” He looked at his cybernetic hand, then back at the detectives. “You’ve come to arrest the wrong man.”

“So who did kill Benali and Sonar?” Jav asked.

“What kind of detectives are you? Think about it,” Tavil replied. “Sensitive Imperial information is about to pass hands. The man to receive it dies. A cop investigating it dies, which in turn causes the other cops investigating it to be targeted by the local crime lord. I just received word that my sources have been killed. We’re not enemies, detectives. We’re fellow targets.”

The explosion ripped through the building with a force that threw them all like so many dejarik pieces.

“Let the girl go,” Synth instructed. “She doesn’t have anything to do with this.”

“He makes some good points,” Meih said meekly, staring at the blaster barrel pointed at her head.

“I don’t want to hurt you,” Shivalla said. She glanced at Synth. “Except maybe you. You’re a little grating. My point, however, is that whether I want to or not… If I have to, I will.”

“And I’ll do exactly what I have to,” Synth replied evenly. “You’ll be dead before you hit the floor.”

“But not before the nice ponytailed teenager does the same.”

“I’m twenty-three,” Meih interjected.

“Who do you work for?” Synth asked.

“All I want is the Benali file, and I’ll be on my way,” Shivalla said.

“Are you an independent contractor?”

“Step back and let us out of this horrid little room.”

“Why do you want the Benali file?”

“Step. Back.”

Synth slowly backed up, and Shivalla and Meih moved forward at the same pace. Once in the hallway, Shivalla swiveled right, keeping her face toward Synth. He, meanwhile, kept his weapon trained on her for a one-shot kill.

Synth continued to press. “So, ‘Jaina’, what do you know about Chal Ibanez?”

Shivalla’s eyes narrowed behind her dark glasses. She tried to tune out Synth’s obnoxious interrogation as she backed down the hallway, pulling her hostage along with her. His next question, though, she couldn’t ignore.

“Where is Jav Yonx?”

She paused.

He smirked.

“…Would you stop with your blasted questions?”

Synth shrugged as far as he could manage with both hands on his blaster. “All right. I’ll grill Meih instead. Meih, what is your favorite color?”

Meih blinked sweat away from her eyes and glanced at the pistol ready to kill her. “Wh- what?”

“Colors,” he said patiently. “Which is your favorite?”

“G-green,” she squeaked.

Synth nodded, still keeping his blaster fixed on Shivalla. They all marched carefully down the empty hallway. “What are your hobbies?”

She answered between nervous gasps for air. “I- I uh I keep a… garden of min- miniature trees. And and uh I paint… sometimes but I’m… n-not ah not real good…”

“Family?”

“One… older brother. His n-name… is Remy.”

Shivalla’s eyes darted from the Imperial to the young lab tech. The resemblance was clear now that she was looking for it. She’d taken Remy’s sister hostage. Remy, best friend of Sonar. Shivalla looked back at Synth, who was still asking questions to make Meih human – to make her an unacceptable loss to Shivalla. He didn’t know that he’d already accomplished just that. Sithspit. She bit back a sigh. Now I’m down to bluffing. And he’s still got a very real hand.

“How do you know Jav Yonx?” Shivalla interrupted.

“He was my partner. He went rogue.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Is that right?”

His features were unmoved. “That’s right.”

“And why did he go ‘rogue’, Investigator?”

Synth licked chapped lips.

“Please, don’t stop knowing it all now on my account,” Shivalla said.

The Imperial’s commlink buzzed. A grainy voice followed. “Attention all CorSec officers. We have an 815 at SynMal Trading, a big one, and a 106 in progress. SynMal security and agents with local criminal ties are trading fire. If you’re available and have a badge, get down here.” Click.

Synth and Shivalla didn’t break eye contact, though hers were hidden by the shaded lenses. She spoke. “We’ve all got bigger problems than this file right now.”

“She makes some good points,” Meih said meekly.

“These problems are exactly why I can’t let you take it,” Synth replied.

“That so?”

“That’s so.”

Shivalla addressed her human shield. “Meih?”

“Y-yes?”

“It’s been a pleasure meeting you. Shame it went downhill shortly after. Always mix your own flesh tones.”

“What?”

“You paint.”

Shivalla shoved Meih toward Synth, jumped back through a doorway, and closed the large blue doors. She immediately turned and ran partway down the hall. Once visible, she walked briskly through the slightly thinned but still hectic crowd. She nodded to the receptionist as she passed. The false Imperial had just exited Primary when Synth dashed into the room in search of her.

The woman at the main desk folded her arms. “She give you a bad review or what?”

He ran out wordlessly to the large white stone steps that led to the building, but there was no sign of her, save a discarded badge for Imperial investigator Jaina Tammish. He picked it up, finding the picture scribbled out with fresh black ink. Synth looked up again, scanning the street for the thief. He threw the I.D. aside, muttering a curse. The end of his long gray coat flapped in the air kicked up by a CorSec speeder careening by toward the river. Toward SynMal.

On top of the speeder departing Primary, Shivalla lay flat, white-knuckled hands gripping the roof edges.

Arnim Kolne didn’t look up when Greeres stepped into the office – which had just two days prior been his. “I dearly hope this is important. I’m a little busy right now.”

Greeres said, “Yes, I just heard. There’s trouble at the SynMal tower. That’s why I’m here. I’m requesting temporary restoration to regional director.”

Now Kolne faced the Corellian. “What?”

“I can handle this, Arnim.”

“Director Kolne,” he corrected through clenched teeth.

Sir, with all due respect, I know this city, these cops, these criminals, these people. Our officers are dealing with two rival criminal organizations and a huge amount of property damage. There is infrastructure to protect, professional killers to apprehend, civilians to save. They hardly need a change of leadership on top of all that.”

“The change of leadership has already taken place,” Kolne said coolly.

“Be reasonable,” Greeres replied. “You’ve been in charge two days. There’s no stability about your leadership.”

“The answer is no. You’re wasting time we don’t have.”

“Then let me advise you in how to take this on. I’ve led through crises like this. You haven’t. I can–”

Kolne’s voice still did not raise; instead it lowered to a point that Greeres strained to hear. “You are wasting your breath; I have already sent out the orders. I will not allow you to use this crime in a desperate effort to grab back power you lost the right to wield. Do not delude yourself, Jek. You’re not returning after I’m gone. Right now, you are more likely to lose your retirement benefits.” Kolne turned back to his work. “I think you’re familiar with the placement of the door in this office.”

Greeres took a breath. The voice on the commlink echoed in his head. “That’s Director Greeres,” he growled. Kolne was too slow to evade the blaster pistol sailing into the side of his balding head. The Imperial clipped the desk with his chin as he fell. Greeres stepped through the lightly falling leafs of flimsiplast, blaster barrel still in his grasp.

Brigan DaRusso was the only thing keeping the odiferous, shady bar from being completely empty. He hunched over the dark red wood of the bar, light falling through the window blinds onto his face in stripes. He downed another drink and immediately began pouring himself another.

“Brigan,” the hefty woman on the other side of the bar said, “it’s barely quarter past six. Take it easy.”

“I am makin’ it easier,” he muttered, face in his hand. He hissed in breath and kneaded the skin between his eyes. “And it’s still tough.”

“Y’ playin’ again or what?”

He sighed. “No. I played a game last week. Jus’ one, and it’s given me… kriffin’ astronomical grief. I… I got dual loyalties, double vision, an’ two scoops uh guilt.”

“You also smell like a wet dog.”

“Yeah yeah…”

His commlink buzzed. DaRusso flipped it open, and text scrolled across its screen. EXPLOSION AT SYNMAL TRADING CO. SHOTS FIRED, ROYAL SUSPECTED INVOLVED.

A few blocks away from SynMal, Shivalla slid onto the side of the patrol speeder she’d been riding. She pushed off, landing in a backwards roll on the sidewalk. She came back to her full height in an alleyway, discarded her black coat, and let her hair down. She shed next the Imperial shirt, exposing the snug black garment beneath. She pulled up her pant legs to free them from where she’d tucked them into black boots to fit the Imperial part. She dropped her dark glasses in a pocket. “From Imp to anonymous in two seconds flat, ladies and gentlemen.”

She next opened the file she’d stolen and began flipping through its contents. “I so prefer slicing,” she murmured. “In the digital w-…” Her words drifted off as she stared at the results for the slug that had penetrated Edairu Benali’s heart.
