Nice update!
A freelance doc, no questions asked, a non-cliche mob boss who is, for once, not happily married, and a rich boy who resigns from his dream job.
I only wonder, is Sonar's leave a total coincidence, or is there more to him than meets the eye (as in he's involved in the whole Benali case somehow).
Or is it even because of his partner, Remy?
Oh, and what are the odds we'll see a long-toothed feline predator in the story, at least in retrospective? Yeah, probably rather low, because I guess forensics would've noticed they're bits or slashes from claws, wouldn't they?
Mystery, mystery...
Btw, cool thing to hear that you know Life on Mars. It really is British TV at its best.
Oh, and look who's here, a toast to the return of the a certain kind of alcoholic and misspelled beverage favored by many a Cor(r)ellian. Welcome back,
ale
!
(I'll keep writing your name in small letters^^)

four of five cops killed in this city are murdered because of a case they looked into
Well in that case, Remy, just introduce yourself as Mr. Ryred from this point on and hope they go after him.
“I’m resigning.”
No, that’s not at all suspicious
Nice twist, though. I can’t wait to hear what reasoning he gives.
Great update

“I’d be glad to kneecap Remy if it would help.”
LOL. I loved that line.
The plot thickens with the mention of all the money Benali had. And what Remy mentioned about their case with SynMal made me ponder some more.
Hmm, I'm not sure if this is right or not, but I got the impression that Bel meant more to Katyana than simply being a "good, honest man." It was fascinating to see the Royal in his home environment and how he relates to his wife versus the people who work for him.
“That’s why I wanted you to be the first to know.”
oooh, so Remy doesn't even know yet?
Other people have already mentioned this, but I'm also wondering what caused Sonar to make that decision at that time.
Great job, and I'm looking forward to more!
Enjoy Spring Break.

Sonar held up a headshot of Benali. “Edairu Benali, cop from Duro.”
“Doctor-patient confidentiality.”
“He died three days ago.”
“Dead don’t pay. Come on in.”
You have the most awesome characters.
And I certainly wasn't expecting Sonar to resign! Tell me he reconsiders, or is at least forced to come back!

I've always loved funny
These were very interesting. I sort of like Royal, in the he's a badass-badguy way (like in Vader and Don Corleone had a kid). The last part with the panther was awesome -- such a cool twist on the boy who cried wolf
And I like his wife even more
I'm VERY interested about the resignation.

Laine
: Glad the Royal’s characterization is working for you. It’s a fine line to walk making him, as you say, a despicable scumbag, while also showing he’s a human being with his own problems.
As for the reason behind Sonar’s retirement… Well, a certain Corellian wants to know exactly the same thing.
Musical
: See above comment on Sonar.
oqidaun

It was a pretty good break, thanks.

Chapter Five: Goodbyes
Kelona 5, 1312
Detectives’ Room, Bortelles CorSec Primary
Bortelles, Corellia
“What the kriff is this Sithspit, and why am I hearing about it from a third party?” Remy slammed his hands down on Sonar’s desk as punctuation.
His partner looked up demurely. “Remy, I
told
you to heed the spoiler warnings on those
Division 29
sites when you haven’t seen the latest episode.”
“You’re
quitting?
Why didn’t you talk to me before Greeres?”
“Because then we’d be having
this
conversation,” Sonar said.
Remy rolled his eyes melodramatically. “Oh thank goodness we dodged that laser!”
“Truly you are the personification of mature and intelligent discourse,” deadpanned Sonar.
In rebuttal, Remy stuck out his tongue. Sonar collected the pile of documents he’d been working on into one overstuffed folder and started walking. Remy moved beside him as they navigated the various officers’ desks, and the general chaos of the office. “We’ve been friends for six years, partners for two. Now you’re leaving the force just like that? Without so much as a head’s up to me? You’re my best friend, man.” That stopped Sonar. Remy came to a halt as well, and they faced each other unmoving as CorSec agents flowed around them. “I wanna know why,” Remy said evenly.
Sonar exhaled. “The Royal has the city in his pocket. And much as I wish we could, you and I can’t change that ourselves. We’re just two cops. I can’t hold up a falling sky with a badge and a blaster.” Sonar turned and kept walking.
“Ignoring your crappy poetry,” Remy persisted right behind him, “how does that give you the right to just give up? You’re a lot of things, Sonar: quitter isn’t one of them.”
Sonar whirled around to face his partner while still walking backwards. “It is today.” He backed through a push hinged-door, turning back around as he did.
Remy followed him into the archive room. Sonar set about dropping sheets of flimsy into the proper cabinets of Bortelles’ archaic hard-copy backup system. Remy said, “I don’t buy it. I know you, and that’s not the reason. Or at least not the whole reason.”
“Have you looked at Greeres lately?” Sonar asked.
Remy’s brow furrowed. “Uh, yeah, how to put this? I’m gonna go with ‘
What?
’”
“He used to be an idealist, you know. I’ve read his old reports from when he was a detective, and the early days of his regional director position. I’ve talked to the criminals he put away. Jek Greeres was a great cop. Now he’s a… shadow.” He raised his eyebrows at the wall. “More crappy poetry. Didn’t know I had it in me.” He closed the last drawer, and faced Remy. “This town – the job that you and I have been trying to do for the last two years…” He sighed. “That broken man? He’s you in thirty years, if the Royal doesn’t have you killed first.” Sonar’s expression softened momentarily, then he left Remy alone.
He’s still not being honest.
Inaudibly, Remy murmured, “What are you hiding, buddy?”

She raised the jagged knife high, then plunged it into her target. It stuck a good three centimeters in; Meih Diabet struggled to pull it free again. She stood back to look at her handiwork. A strip of an expensive flesh-simulating synthetic jelly lay before her covered in various “wounds.” It was the forensics lab’s way of finding out what kind of mark a weapon would leave on a human without damaging any actual bodies. Upon seeing the process once, Remy had remarked that it was disgusting. Meih had invited him to volunteer as a “stabbing bag”, but he didn’t take the offer.
Meih took a picture of the wicked cut her strike had gouged out of the strange substance, labeled it, and set it on a table full of other efforts to reproduce the cuts on Benali’s body. Meih adjusted her goggles, and looked up at the autopsy pictures hanging on one wall. Another non-match.
Rubbing her sore arm, she looked to a counter covered in knives, stabbing weapons, and anything else she could find sharper than a toothpick. “I’ve got more stress relief than I know what to do with,” she muttered.

SynMal Trading Company Bortelles Branch
Bortelles, Corellia
Apparently, Begg made a sudden and unexpected decision to resign. There wasn’t a replacement immediately available, so I would be serving as Diabet’s de facto partner for the time being. The prospect didn’t exactly fill me with excitement, but I needed his insight into the case he’d been working with Benali. Especially now, as we went to the heart of the beast they’d fought until Benali’s death. This was SynMal.
I certainly believed the “sin” part.
The SynMal building rose on the west side of the city as a conspicuously modern transparisteel structure surrounded on three sides by comparatively elderly designs and contstructions. At its fourth side was the division of north and south Bortelles, the Petchuck River. It flowed through Bortelles into the sea on the east, where the rival Reishh Shipyards squatted – not tall, but boasting a considerably larger footprint than SynMal’s reflective tower.
Petchuck River’s name came from the Old Corellian, literally meaning “the river of bad blood”. Jav suspected the locals weren’t even trying to put up appearances that might make the place seem vaguely civilized.
The movement of the nearby river lock could be heard as he and Remy walked into the SynMal lobby. The Corellian slid a finger along the brim of his fedora and flipped it off his head. Two hulking guards appeared to flank the cops. The way the one on the right moved, it screamed ex-CorSec. Before he could request identification, both Duro and Corellian flashed their badges. “We’d like a meeting with your boss.”
“Right this way,” the guard growled. He turned and began marching toward a door near the secretary’s desk. A swipe of his ID card allowed them access to a wide, light-filled corridor. The high amount of transparisteel architecture created a bright open space, while at the same time offering a subtler version of the disorienting multiple reflections of a fun house.
The trio entered a turbolift car, and the guard selected a floor two levels from the top. The top floor was reserved for a dining facility and break room, and the next was omitted for landing on a traditionally unlucky number. When the silent lift ride ended, the guard led them down a considerably emptier hallway to what appeared to be the only room on the level. The guard placed a hand on his earpiece. “You can go in now.”
“Thanks bunches,” Remy replied dryly. He didn’t respond.
The office of Petric Tavil was as cold and sterile as the rest of the place. The sole sign of humanity was a warm wooden desk that appeared to be constructed of whitened driftwood, but even its effect was diluted by the presence of a number of sleek silver technological wonders atop it. Tavil himself was a combination of man and metal; his cybernetic right hand gleamed gold in the afternoon sunlight, as did the edges of his wispy blond hair. He stood and stepped around the desk to approach the guests. “Detective Diabet,” he said.
“Mr. Tavil.”
“I read about Sergeant Benali; I understand you were working with him. I extend my condolences, as do my superiors at the Duro branch.”
“I’ll pass it along to his wife and children,” Jav said, his words icing over as they left his mouth. Tavil locked the Duro’s rust-red gaze with a slightly bemused one, though the rest of his face remained appropriately grave. “DI Jav Yonx. I’m assisting with the investigation of Benali’s death.”
“Anything I can do to help, of course,” purred the criminal executive.
“Good, ‘cause one thing you can do is answer some questions,” Remy said. “First, when did you last see Benali?”
“Detective, I think you know very well I’ve never met him. You’re the only officer who’s come to personally speak with me, though you did bring your partner along once or twice, I think. Are you ashamed of me, or was Sergeant Benali just too shy to meet the man he was investigating?” Tavil asked.
“Where were you Kelona 2, at around 1500 hours?” Remy asked in return.
“My, you’re direct.”
“I’d appreciate if you followed my example in that respect.”
“I was here, detective. Making this shipping company run. Security footage, and the records of my ID card being punched in and out, will prove that.”
“Then you wouldn’t mind giving us the records and footage.”
“Of course not.
Just
as soon as you have a warrant.” Remy’s eyes narrowed. Tavil’s were frozen in a wide inquisitive expression. “Am I to presume from your uncharacteristic silence that you don’t have one?”
“Prepare records for the whereabouts of all your security staff at that time, regardless of shift,” Remy ordered. “We’ll be wanting that too.”
“And I will comply fully. I hope to be a help in your investigation.”
Remy snorted. “Now’s a good a time as any to start.”

Kelona 5, 2351
Ryred Apartments, Southeast Complex, Room 22D
Bortelles, Corellia
Djerro “Sonar” Begg reached for the glass of ale. He put it to his lips and tilted it before realizing it was empty again. “Outstanding.” He stood and waited a moment for his impaired balance to catch up. In front of him was his open closet door, gray-and-khaki CorSec uniform hanging prominently. He shook his head and started walking to the kitchen of his three-room apartment. Sonar poured himself another drink, discovering it was the last of his ale. He sighed. “Best make it last the night.”
He took the half-filled glass to his darkened living room, not bothering to turn on the lights. Sonar stopped at the large, old glass – his building couldn’t afford transparisteel – window, and looked out on the city he was leaving behind. The job. The people.
He took a drink.
The view was a bleak one. His was a seaside apartment, but Bortelles was not a warm beach town. There the sea was cold and gray, and so was the sky. Reissh Shipyards was only a couple miles north – the emblem of everything wrong with Bortelles.
He took a drink.
Sonar glanced away from the moonless night, and looked at the boxes into which he’d packed the majority of his belongings. On top of one sat a smaller box, labeled simply “Remy”.
He took a drink.
The apartment door slid open with a
swoosh
. Sonar cautiously began walking in the direction of the sound. He’d only taken two steps when the intruder entered the room, slugthrower aimed.
Sonar finished the drink.
He glanced at his wrist chrono as he set his glass down on the nearest box. “The post just gets later and later…” His hand came up with a blaster he’d removed from the box. “Don’t–”
The first slug buried itself in Sonar’s left leg, just below the knee. His return fire went off target. “–move,” he finished in a pained hiss. The intruder continued to walk forward, firing on the move. The next two shots hit Sonar in the gut. He stumbled backwards, his aim unsteady and his vision blurring. The blaster slipped from his fingers and clattered to the hardwood floor.
The bulky man’s wounded leg failed under him. He fell back against his window and had nowhere left to go. The shooter kept coming. Head spinning and wounds burning, Sonar opened his mouth to speak.
The next slug went to his chest.
The final one shattered the window holding his considerable weight.
Sonar disappeared into the Bortelles night. Only now did the shooter lower the smoking gun. Tossing the empty ale glass out with the victim, the killer took leave of the third-floor apartment.
Djerro “Sonar” Begg fell drunk with ale, shot with slugs, and cut with glass, into the cold, gray sea.

Woah, nice update!
I can understand Sonar's reasons to leave, at least those he gave Remy. ;P One of the only two righteous and non-corrupt cops in town, it's not hard to grasp the futility behind it all.
Heh, Meih's having troubles finding the killing blade? Well, her collection probably doesn't include teeth or claws from a sabrecat, does it?
Cops, investigations, and warrants, the ooold story, eh?
Tavil doesn't seem very helpful anyway, though.
Woah, what's Sonar done to earn that "beat-up"?
I loved the start of that part, nice writing with the "He took a drink"-repetitions. Let's just hope good old Sonar Man wore a flak-vest underneath his clothes. But it's a good way to go, when everybody thinks you're dead, but you're not.
Very good job, once again, can't wait to read on.

Not that I like the good-guys dying, but it's nice to see such a situation where there's an intruder and neither of these happen: A) The good guy has a gun under his blanket or newspaper and kills him or B) The intruder has a silenced weapon and shoots the good guy while he is either sleeping, taking a shower, or having a quiet moment with his family. So this was very original, and I like it. Great job, as usual.

Oh, wow. Sonar got shot?! I wasn't expecting that. I hope he survived it. Or at least, that it gives them more clues about what's going on. One thing's for sure,
Face
, you know how to weave a tangled web of a storyline! I can never do that properly. Respect to ya!
And your characters are still brilliant. I love their interaction. And I really like Meih, she's cool. And funny, when contrasted/interacting with her brother! Basically, this was an awesome chapter. Can't wait to read more of this!

That's telling him, Remy!
Perhaps if Sonar had been honest, Remy could have helped him...and saved his life.
It'll be interesting to see how Remy takes the news.

CF
: Very glad the “he took a drink” section worked. That Sonar scene is one I put a special amount of work in, to do right by the character.
As for the why of the shooting, you won’t be the only one asking that.
Raptor
: I try to avoid cliché, so that’s good to hear!
Iverna
: Of course, tangled plotlines is another goal of mine.
This one might be my twistiest long fic yet. Maybe.
Laine
: I’ll just say more about Sonar to come. [face_tightlipped]
Kim
: “Bright one”, yeah, there’s something.
KELIA
: No argument the tongue can’t solve! …That’s… that’s probably why I shouldn’t post in the Senate.
Thanks so much for R&Ring, everybody!!
Next update should be Friday or Saturday.

RE: Galaxy Noir: Galaxy of Suspects (A CorSec Mystery - 3/17 Ch. 5: Goodbyes)
Aww.
Man, this was a depressing chapter. First with Remy trying to figure out why Sonar was leaving, then with Sonar acting like a big ol' softy at the end of that section. The middle parts were less so--I liked Meih's stress relief comment, heh heh. I'm also glad that she's working hard to figure out what happened to Benali and not just writing him off as "that cop from Duro" like the others in that department did.
The way the one on the right moved, it screamed ex-CorSec.
Nice little detail there. Bad corruption. No biscuit.
Tavil definitely seems like a sleazeball. oi.
And then things got all depressing again. Poor Sonar! I did not see that coming at all.
<--That about sums it up for me.
Great update, and I'm looking forward to more!
