Yes Face, as per your memo, I am in fact naked while reading...

It’s a mythical creature from a far-away magical land.

-Seen only by those who sample from Jabba's hooka...

Jav’s rust-red eyes flicked to the BlasTech on the collector’s belt, and the black-gloved hand hovering near it. Jav peered up at the Weequay from under his heavy brow. He pulled his coat back to show the badge and pistol on his own. “I was just about to ask you about life insurance.”

-I thought Jav didn't like guns, or was it Remy? But wait, last itme I checked, I'm certain Remy was the one with the sense of humor.

He came ‘round day before yesterday, makin’ real careful to r’main anonymous. Wearin’ one a them trenchcoats, and a hat, and keepin’ his head real low. All I could get was his species an’ that he was 30 or so. Big guy, gruff voice.

Very good postie, Nathan! I am enjoying Jav immensely, and Remy...well, let's just say I'm very jealous of Messuni, and also feel very sorry for her. Hahaha

OUch!

Remy looked down at Thief. Thief looked up at him. “Now that Kaede and I are no longer an item, I think I can say that I never liked you.”

Rawp!

The sudden bark caused a startled Remy to throw himself back against the wall.

Really, "CorSec Jerk"? That's awesome!

Great post. I figured the world's ugliest figurine was bound to have something in it; and that Sonar trusts and knows Remy that well.

Thanks for the PM.

Chapter Eight: Insides

Kelona 6, 1728
Bortelles, Corellia

“Thanks for agreeing to meet me.”

“Shut it, CorSec. We do this on my terms. And chances are, those terms’ll be that we don’t do anything at all.”

Remy stood in an alleyway of the other man’s choosing, under an early evening drizzle. According to the notes Sonar left for Remy, the man was a mid-level bookie for the Royal, and Sonar’s best source of information on that organization. His name was Gil Tresler. He was in his late 40s, but his salt-and-pepper hair and stress-wrinkled face suggested a more advanced age. A thick mustache was draped over his upper lip; thick eyebrows cast shadows over squinting eyes; thick sideburns obscured the sides of his lumpy round head. He wore an old brown business suit under an older, faded brown raincoat. Tresler held in his left hand a black umbrella. Raindrops popped against its taut fabric. The red embers on the end of the cigarette between his teeth were like a demonic eye in the dark.

“Let’s see some ID.”

Remy held up his badge. Tresler gestured. Remy tossed it over to the accountant, who caught and examined it. “Remy Diabet,” he mumbled. Tresler lobbed the badge back. “So you’re Sonar’s partner?”

“Yeah.”

A puff of smoke escaped through Tresler’s lips. “Word is he’s missing.”

“Yeah.”

“You here to pay the money he owes me, or what?”

“I’m here to find out why Sonar disappeared.”

“Lemme guess. You suspect the Royal?”

“Should I?”

Another drag from the cigarette. “Probably.”

“Sonar was building a case against the Royal, working to take his operation down,” Remy said. “You were helping him with information from the inside.”

“Doesn’t mean I should start helping you. Sonar paid.”

“This project of his may be behind his disappearance. How long before the Royal makes you disappear? It’s in your interest to help me pin him for what he’s done.”

If you’re right and the Royal was behind it. If not, helping you only increases the chances he’ll find out I’ve been leaking information,” replied Tresler.

“All I wanna know is if you’ve heard anything that connects the Royal to it. Anything indicating he knew what Sonar was planning.”

Tresler dropped his cigarette. His shoe ground it into the wet duracrete. “Yeah, he had at least an idea about what Sonar was up to. Maybe he knew more, maybe not. I’m the man’s accountant, not his priest.”

Remy bit his lip. “…Okay. Okay. If you hear anything…

Maybe I’ll comm you.”

Tresler left the alley one way, and Remy the other.

Gil Tresler slid his keycard over the scanner on the door to the Royal’s offices – where his own office was located.

Nothing happened.

Frowning, he scanned again. A red light flashed. The door still did not open.

It hit him all the harder when he realized how obvious it was. His access had been removed.

The Royal knew.

Tresler turned to run, and didn’t look back. He had to get back to his home. No. There’d be someone waiting. The spaceport then. He held his wristchrono up before his eyes even as he hurried out. When would the next flight out of Bortelles be? Should he rent a speeder and hit the expressway instead? Going by sea wasn’t an option; the Royal owned essentially all water-faring ships in the city.

The thoughts raced through Tresler’s head, each cutting another off. His throat was choking up, and his armpits were moist with sweat. He dashed around the piles of crates that surrounded the shipyards’ office building, in search of the exit into the larger city. Tresler turned into a dead end. He spun and went the other direction. Lightning struck in the sky behind Tresler, casting sudden light on the area. A huge shadow appeared on the man-sized crate in front of him. He turned again, and saw what was casting that shadow. A horrible combination of insectoid and machine glared down at him with mismatched eyes. The nightmare – the monster of Bortelles – was real.

“No. No, please.”

Zelvyn Judas shot him in the head.

The buzzing commlink sailed across the room. It bounced off a dresser and clattered to the wooden floor. A moment’s respite followed, in which Kaede sighed deeply, content to return to sleep. The wiry arm she’d used to launch the obnoxious device fell slack over the edge of the bed where she laid face down, sheets crumpled at her bare feet.

The buzzing started again. Kaede’s sigh was this time one of frustration. She rolled left off the bed, landing in a crouch. She stood and padded over to the commlink’s landing spot, rubbing at the perpetual circles under her eyes.

“What?” she groaned.

“Kaede… Did I wake you?”

“Did you have a reason to?”

“Oh, umm, this is Riff – Riphelius Amstend, Jr.”

“I know who you are, Riff.”

Specifically, Riff was a young thug working for the Royal. He’d only started about six months earlier, but had quickly come to know – and develop a rather obvious infatuation with – the older woman. Riff was about nineteen, in comparison to her twenty-three years. He seemed to regard her as a fellow employee of the Royal. She considered herself firmly on the CorSec side of the line; she leaked only as much information as she needed to stay useful in the Royal’s eyes. Those who weren’t useful ended up like Sonar – or if they didn’t, their family did.

“Uh, right,” the young man mumbled. “Um, it’s just I just heard something that ah – Your boyfriend Remy?”

“He’s not my boyfriend any more,” she said flatly.

“Oh – really?”

Kaede resisted the urge to sigh again. “Riff. Point.”

“He’s in trouble. Mr. Ryred assigned some of his guys to kill him, and somebody else I don’t know named, ah, Jax or something?”

“Jav Yonx?”

“Yeah, that was it!”

“Oh Force, that idiot’s finally pushed it too far,” Kaede muttered with her palm on her forehead. “Riff, thank you.” He started to say something in reply, but she had already cut the connection. Kaede ran.

UnderTerra Corellia

From June’s shop, I headed straight to the lab, and gave Meih the briefcase to run the evidence. Unfortunately, the slug she pulled out of Benali still hadn’t gotten through that convoluted CorSec system. But there wasn’t really another option. Certainly couldn’t take it to Duro – not any more.

While waiting for results on those clues, I went over what I could in my hotel room at the local UnderTerra. June’s description of the man who sold him the briefcase wasn’t very helpful; there were plenty of people who fit that description in the files on SynMal and the Royal. I even looked over Benali’s recent case reports, looking for those that had any connection at all to Corellia. Again, not much to sort by.

Something else had been bothering me. Sonar was shot with a slugthrower. Just three days after Benali met the same fate. Two murders in such close proximity with the same kind of unusual, antiquated weapon. If only we had a bullet to compare to Benali’s, we might be able to form a connection between the two crimes. As is, it’s just a theory.

So, I work the theory. What is the connection between Djerro Begg and Edairu Benali?

The answer hit him. Jav looked up from the flimsipad on the table before him. “Remy Diabet.”

A voice came from beyond the door to the room. “How’d ya know?”

Jav stood and opened it. Remy looked back quizzically.

“What are you doing here?” Jav asked.

“I think I know why Sonar disappeared,” he said, pushing past the Duro and into the room.

“Please, come in,” he muttered, closing the door.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Okay. Anyway. I spoke with a contact who works for the Royal…” Remy began.

“This again?”

The Corellian went on. “Sonar was investigating the Royal. He was building a case against him in secret. The man on the inside I spoke to indicated that the Royal probably knew about Sonar’s side project. Major motive to make him go away. I know we’re not on that case, but you, me, and Meih are the only ones not tainted by the Royal’s influence now. If he is responsible, DaRusso and Citec will not find Sonar.”

“Actually,” Jav replied, “the two cases might be one and the same. The close proximity? The cop targets? The slugthrower weapon?”

Remy nodded slowly. “All right, but what’s the connection besides a badge?”

Jav paused. “…You.”

“…Who?”

“They both worked closely with you, Remy. Sonar as your partner. You were Benali’s regional liaison for the SynMal case. The connection is you.”

******

Kaede walked into the UnderTerra lobby in a black nerf-leather coat, slick with rain. Her right hand was in her pocket, holding her CorSec standard CDEF pistol. Her left hand held Thief’s leash. The spikes on the slice hound’s back rose slightly as she sniffed the air. At the far right was the grand stairway leading up to the room where Kaede knew Jav and Remy had to be.

There were five other people in the airy, classically decorated room. A female hotel employee stood behind the check-in desk on Kaede’s left. On her right, an affluent Imperial couple argued quietly without making eye contact. Ahead of her, a man sat at a table with flowers. He looked up when she came in, then hung his head sadly. In the far left corner, a man in a business suit stepped out of the refresher. He straightened his black coat and walked out into the larger lobby. Kaede blinked to be sure. He had cybernetic eyes.

“Excuse me, young lady,” the receptionist said, “there are no pets allowed in the building.”

Kaede pulled the blaster out of her pocket and aimed. “CorSec! Freeze!” The receptionist threw herself out of sight. The couple and disappointed man panicked. The suit-wearing man she knew as the hitman Muerban Mannox twisted as he moved, sliding behind a couch. Kaede’s first shot sailed wide. She started running forward and to the right, Thief at her side, in hopes of blocking the false-eyed assassin from getting to the stairway. “Everybody get down!” she screamed. The civilians followed her order.

Kaede ducked behind an oversized chair, barely avoiding return fire. The leash snapped out of her hand as Thief rushed the man threatening her owner. “Thief! Bhiq!” The hound ignored her order; she jumped over the couch and tackled Mannox. Kaede spun out from her cover, both hands gripping the pistol at arm’s length. Thief was standing with paws on Mannox’s chest and throat, while he struggled to escape. Kaede hesitated; she risked shooting Thief if she fired.

Mannox freed his right arm and brought it around the slice hound. He bashed the pistol against Thief’s head, while using his other arm to shove the animal off him.

Kaede had a clear shot. She fired.

As did Mannox.

His red eyes stayed open as his head tipped back against the floor. Dark crimson stained his white undershirt.

Kaede fell back against the chair, and slid to the floor. Thief, shaking off her dizziness, ran to her fallen owner. Kaede looked down at the blood on her own shirt. “Well.”

Suddenly Remy was at her side. “Somebody call an ambulance!” he yelled to the others in the room. The receptionist grabbed a commlink. “We heard the shots, came as quick as we could. You’re okay,” he told her, putting pressure over the wound near her heart. “You’re okay. Look at me, Kaede.”

“He…” She coughed, and blood escaped her mouth. She struggled to keep her eyes even half-open. Remy could feel her shivering in his arms. “Was gonna kill you. Royal’s got a hit… on you and Yonx… Came to help you. ‘S prob’ly others… Y’ gotta get outta here…”

“I’m not going anywhere. You’re okay. You just focus on me. Eyes here. You’re okay.”

Her mouth twitched in a faint lop-sided smile. “You too, buddy…” She stopped trembling.

“Kaede. Kaede!” There was no response. Remy’s eyes were wide open, staring over her shoulder, as he cradled the dead woman against him. Tears ran down his face. Now he was the one shaking. His lips quivered but no words escaped them.

Thief nudged Kaede’s hand with her nose over and over, beckoning her to get up.

Jav, standing over Mannox and looking out the transparisteel wall facing the street, spoke into the terrifying quiet. “We have to leave.” Outside the hotel, black speeders stopped to unload men with blaster rifles.

“Remy, we have to leave now.

The inclusion of a unicorn makes everything better. grin wink

Whew, Sonar has been busy on lots of different things. I'm not familiar with the "Shivalla" name, and I'm curious to see why Remy noticed that one. All that info on The Royal must be like a goldmine to Remy.

Lindo June was an interesting character, especially with watching the game show, LOL.

The red embers on the end of the cigarette between his teeth were like a demonic eye in the dark.

That was just a darn cool line.

"...The connection is you."

Okay, Jav, now is the time to disassociate yourself from Remy. tongue

At first I was going to make a few comments on how Kaede was leaking info to The Royal, though she seemed to have understandable reasons to do so. But then I couldn't, not after what happened to her. sad She was a cool character, and she died trying to help Remy and Jav... man... That's so sad. sad The number of even halfway-trustworthy CorSec officers in Bortelles seems to be decreasing exponentially right now.

And who's gonna take care of Thief?

Looks like Jav and Remy are in for a world of hurt if they don't get out of there soon. worried

Great updates, and I'm looking forward to more! happy

Good post.

But at least our boys know that they're being chased, even if Kaede had to die for it.

*sniffle* I need a kleenex...I dunno why I even bother getting attached to your characters, Nathan. I need a hug... *goes off to find her cat*

Fantastic post, Nathan! I am super-duper saddened by Kaede's death, but I sorta knew it was gonna happen (knowing you). Very cool tying the two together...poor Remy. Gotta love bein' the missing link. *snickers at mental image*
