Poor girl sad I kinda liked her. And what's Thief going to do without her?

The connection to Remy is VERY interesting. I'm curious as to why they're all lose to him.

And the real butter flavor cracked me up grin

Thumper: The inclusion of a unicorn makes everything better.

Doesn’t it though?

The cigarette image was one of my favorites as well (if I get to say so myself tongue ).

CF: I gave Perdition a small unauthorized cameo in "Pariah", too....

>:o

No that’s awesome!

If he's talkin bout Sonar, you better have a good explanation!

[face_saying_nothing]

You should think, though, that he would know his way round better than to turn up in a dead alley, working there and all.

He was a pencil-pusher; he didn’t bother to learn his way around the docks themselves. Seems he should have bothered.

Heh, and I was worried the “dog with dead owner” was clichéd enough as it was. wink

Raptor: Me too. In a, uh, totally non-sadistic way.

Laine: And the chasing is forthcoming…

Mrs. V: It’s like a prerequisite, actually. wink

Eruanne: Aww. Don’t give up on getting attached to characters though; that’s part of my job description. What if I’m fired?! worried

Leona: Helpful doesn’t make the dead less dead, so maybe he shoulda made himself useful. tongue

Nat: Yeah. sad

Connection to Remy will be followed up.

KELIA: Looks that way about Mr. Ryred. As for Remy, he and Thief are not joining each other’s fan clubs just yet. tongue

Thank you everyone!!! hugs

Chapter Nine: Power Shifts

Jav and Remy burst through the door, into the hotel’s back lot. They could hear the Royal’s men entering the lobby. A voice saying “Cripes, they shot Mannox” was the last thing audible before the door closed behind them.

“Where’s your speeder?” Remy asked.

“I walked. Where’s yours?”

“I walked!” Remy exhaled through clenched teeth. “Okay.” He moved to a dark green landspeeder and began slicing into its controls.

“What are you doing?”

“Cleaning their lock. What do you think I’m doing?” The speeder started up with a satisfying rumble. A smile briefly played across Remy’s lips before they returned to the stony resolve he’d had since the blaster shot that killed Kaede. “Get in.”

Jav got in. The speeder coasted forward out of the lot, and into the alley to which it connected. “What kind of cop,” Jav asked, “knows how to steal a speeder?”

“They call us CorSec.”

Remy pulled out into the street, and hit the accelerator hard. Jav glanced back. No less than three black speeders were tailing them. “Three on us.”

“I see ‘em.”

A blaster bolt hit the back of their vehicle, leaving a black score. “Care to lose them, CorSec?”

“I don’t see you driving.”

“Which do you need help with – the steering or the pedals?”

“I think it says more about you,” Remy replied with gritted teeth as he swerved around a corner through honking traffic, “that I can’t tell whether you’re serious or mocking me.”

“It’s just that most people do both all by themselves,” Jav pressed.

“Most people don’t have a side-seat passenger telling them what to do.”

“You seem to need one.”

“You seem to need a punch to the mouth.”

The sarcasm was thick in Jav’s voice. “Oh, wow. Careful where you swing that wit, CorSec. Somebody could get a paper cut.”

Two more blaster bolts hit the speeder.

“My name is Remy.”

“If you’re looking for an apology for that, call up your parents.”

“Oh Jav, whenever are we going to introduce you to them?”

Another shot connected.

“Shut up and drive!”

Shut up?” Remy repeated, aghast. “You could shave your shiny noggin with a rebuttal that sharp!”

“Don’t even attack the head.”

“Right, because where you’ve got your head, that’d be below the belt – albeit the other side.”

Before Jav could respond, Remy grabbed his commlink and started broadcasting an open call aid on the CorSec channel. Unlikely any Bortelles cops would bother stopping the Royal’s men, but it was worth a try.

Jav shot Remy a glare before sticking his head and arm out the window. He aimed for the closest speeder and squeezed off a few shots at the Gran firing in much the same way. They all missed. Jav held his breath, focused, and aimed again. He had the shot. The speeder jerked forward suddenly, causing Jav to hit his shoulder against the window edge, and his bolt to fly off-target. “What the–?”

Remy pointed straight ahead. “There’s a traffic light up ahead. With any luck, we can use it to lose them. Well, not just any luck. Exclusively good luck, really.”

“You talk too much,” Jav grumbled. A green ray grazed his upper arm, eliciting a scream. He threw himself back into the speeder, clinging to the wound.

Remy spared a glance at the graze. “You scream like a girl over that? Never been shot before?”

“As a matter of fact,” Jav hissed, “no.”

“You should try it some time. And that little scratch doesn’t count.”

Jav’s retort came between heavy breaths. “Have you ever successfully shot anyone before?”

The Corellian choked back bile. “Not cool, man.”

The light ahead turned from a friendly green to a warning yellow. Remy pushed the engines even harder, weaving around slower traffic. The Royal’s goons kept on him. The cops’ speeder flew through the intersection just as it changed to a forbidding red. The two speeders just behind them came through as well, but the third slid to a halt – trapped on the other side of crossing vehicles.

Remy made a hard left, followed by another onto 52nd Street. Stranger Street. They came out at the top of the hill on which it sat, where it converged from two smaller avenues. The stolen speeder and its two pursuers merged with traffic while speeding downhill. The road plunged into a valley, then over a small crest, and downhill again. As each speeder sailed over that crest, they smashed down into the duracrete in a shower of sparks before moving forward at a normal hover.

As quickly as Stranger Street had begun, the slum ended as they crossed 9th, replaced by an industrial district. Steam rising from grates in the street created a mist around them equivalent to any other jungle. Jav fired a few more shots back. The Gran screamed and dropped his blaster to clutch one of his three – now two – eyes.

Suddenly out of the night and fog, there appeared two speeders parked sideways across the street to block all traffic.

“Hang on.”

Leaning halfway out the window, Jav shouted back, “To what?”

“Your dinner.”

Remy slammed on the brakes, and threw the stick on the floor backwards. The speeder jerked into reverse, and Remy used the mirrors to navigate up the street, past baffled thugs, and into an adjacent alleyway. The Royals’ men spun to take chase.

Remy and Jav backed out through traffic, speeders flying past all around, to the center turn lane, where Remy threw the vehicle into a three-quarter spin, ending facing the proper direction for the lane. He threw the stick forward again and took off, side-by-side with the huge shipping speeder he’d nearly hit. Its Twi’lek driver gaped at Remy. Remy glanced to the left, mouthing, “How’s my driving?” A blaster bolt hitting the back window provided the impetus to leave the Twi’lek behind.

“One of them stayed on us,” Jav reported.

“Oh is that why we’re getting shot?”

The Corellian weaved in and out of the passing lane, clearing civilian vehicles moving at normal speeds. The black speeder did the same just meters behind. Its top open, a towering humanoid shape rose through.

Eyes on the mirror, Remy hissed, “The bogeyman.”

“The urban legend?”

“Way too real for my liking, I’m afraid.”

Judas raised a repeater rifle’s scope to his cybernetic eye. A litany of Old Corellian and Duro curses filled the speeder as the two cops panicked. Jav fired, but the monster ignored the shots as if they’d been paint. Judas opened fire.

A spray of jade blasts tore holes in the speeder, and the road near it. The weapon lit the night with an emerald glow. Jav fell silently into his seat, bleeding from his neck and shoulder – shock etched into his features.

Directly ahead, the four-lane street became two two-lane bridges separated by a six-meter gap – one bridge for each direction of traffic. Remy veered to the left and dropped back to be parallel with Judas’s speeder. The cyborg adjusted his aim. Remy pushed right, slamming his speeder against theirs. “Jav!” he screamed. The Duro sat shuddering, as life leaked from his wounds.

Remy plowed into the other vehicle once more. The sounds were all that registered. Metal-on-metal screech, the rain on the roof – from both the clouds and the repeater rifle, the roar of engines, and then seemingly silence.

The criminals’ speeder went up onto the bridge railing, and its repulsors fought to balance. An over-correction flipped the vehicle through the air between bridges. It clipped the other bridge, flipped the other direction, and hit the street below top-down, sliding another thirty meters into a pole.

Remy and Jav drove on.

The Corellian grabbed his commlink. “This is Detective Diabet, pursuit is gone, likely dead, at 22nd under the bridge. I’ve got an officer wounded, am requesting aid.” He took a breath and looked at Jav again, who was staring with glazed-over eyes. Blood ran slowly down his arm in dark rivulets. Remy’s next words came softly. “Please tell me there’s somebody out there.”

Bortelles, Corellia

Jek Greeres closed his eyes for a moment. When he opened them again, he was still in the CorSec office – in his office. He groaned; he’d been hoping maybe he’d just been having a nightmare and was really back in bed with his wife, and the two kids in the rooms on either side. Greeres rubbed at his perpetual stubble. A cop was dead. Probably two cops, considering what he’d heard of Sonar’s disappearance. And two of the more moral ones, at that. At times, Sonar reminded Greeres of a younger version of himself.

That’s why he’d given him a chance when other divisions of CorSec wouldn’t touch him.

That’s why he’d avoided him more often than not.

Greeres looked again at the holos of his family. There’s a reason I’ve made the decisions I have, he reminded himself. Three reasons.

A knock on the door roused him from his thoughts. He usually knew people were there before they announced themselves. Was he losing that too? “Yes?”

The door opened, allowing the entrance of two men in gray. One wore an Imperial uniform; the other a trenchcoat. The former was Arnim Kolne, the Bortelles Imperial liaison. He was in his mid 50s like Greeres, but his balding had left only a ring of wispy hair around the back of his head. He was also shorter and stockier than the director. Beside Kolne was a slim young man with an intense calm in his gray eyes.

Greeres adjusted his collar. “Hello, Arnim. What, uh, what brings you here to my uh office here?”

“Your failure, Jek.”

Greeres took a breath. “Sir, one of my officers was just killed, and another just barely survived an attempt on his life. This is following the disappearance of another cop, and the murder of a visiting uh officer. So no games, please.”

The young man in the coat spoke. “Director, my name is Synth Lydon, Imperial investigator. You’ve been playing host as of late to an officer from Duro named Jav Yonx, correct?”

“Yes?”

“Jav Yonx was dishonorably discharged three days ago, disappearing with badge, uniform, and blaster. I tracked him to this planet and city.”

Greeres pushed his glasses up onto his head, and rubbed his eyes. “Oh Force. He… he checked out in our database…”

“I understand he is in the field right now, with your officer Remy Diabet?”

“Y- yes. Yes, they just lost a detail of mob assassins. An ambulance with escort is on its way to pick them up; Yonx was wounded in the chase.”

“You deputized a wanted man,” Kolne said. “This is why I am here as liaison, to be included in decisions like this. I have up-to-the-moment files at my hand; I’m sure your system still hasn’t even logged that Begg boy’s resignation. You have deliberately kept me out of the loop here. This is but one symptom of that. And now you’ve forced my hand.”

Kolne and Greeres locked eyes. The Imperial spoke quietly, without apparent menace. “I am taking control of Bortelles CorSec, effective immediately.”

The Corellian glared over his horn-rimmed glasses at each man in turn. “Let me talk to Diabet.”

“You’ve done enough,” Kolne replied.

“He has to take this seriously. And, Arnim, he Sithing hates you.”

Kolne paused. His teeth didn’t move as he spoke. “Make. The call.”

Public Parking Garage A, Red Section

Jav winced as Remy – a bit roughly – applied a bandage to his neck. He clearly did not possess the touch of a healer. And the dark parking garage in which they were hiding was no hospital.

A buzz prompted Remy to step away from Jav and put his commlink to his ear. “Where’s the pickup?” he asked irritably. “I-… What?”

Jav glanced over curiously. A series of acknowledging sounds from the Corellian lost Jav’s interest. His gaze drifted to the entrance of the garage, which was quiet save the steady rain. He heard the click of a commlink and turned.

Remy stood with blaster pistol aimed between Jav’s eyes. “Jav Yonx, for impersonating an officer of the law, you are under arrest.” No smirk moved Remy’s lips, and no joke crossed them. “Don’t make this hard.”

Well, this looks like it's winding down to a conclusion! Can't wait, this was a great chapter, loved the descriptions, the action, and the tasty dialogue. And the conflict you've put your characters in, also Greeres - I liked his part quite well, he's just the police officer who used to be the adventurous, spirited cop like Remy and Sonar were, but time made him lose his edge.

Oh, and great soundtrack--I played the vid on endless loop while reading the chapter! drooling Reminds me a bit of the action scenes in the new Sam and Max games, way cool. cool Fits your chapter spot-on!

Great job with this chapter, Face, and thanks for the PM! I loved the exchange between Remy and Jav in the speeder, though it didn't have that "friendly" vibe so I'm sure they didn't enjoy it as much as I did. tongue

Metal-on-metal screech, the rain on the roof – from both the clouds and the repeater rifle, the roar of engines, and then seemingly silence.

This was cool, particularly the rain part.

Greeres is definitely having a bad day, poor guy. sad Though it's cool to see Synth again.

You have deliberately kept me out of the loop here.

Interesting... thinking Now I have to wonder... Did Greeres intentionally do that, or was it a simple and innocent mix-up? Though he didn't seem to react with much surprise when Kolne said he was taking control of the Bortelles CorSec, so maybe he was expecting it...? Was it one of the choices he made? Hmm.

Aww, Remy, you can't arrest Jav! Though I have to give him credit for being able to hold his blaster for that long. wink

Great update! grin

I’ll take All for 200, Alex. wink

Yes, we’re ever moving closer to where Remy and Jav are at the beginning of the first Galaxy Noir. It was an interesting challenge to grow them to a place rather than from a place.

We’re not at the conclusion set-up just yet. This has started the momentum that will hopefully run all the way to the end but there’s plenty of twists and turns to come as we enter the second half here. grin

It seems to hide sometimes and run away and wonder
I'm really sick of saying sorry but I will

Nat: “Jax” is one to talk. tongue

Synth is completely focused on doing his job (or what he sees as his job) at the expense of others’ opinions of him. His abrasive social (lack of) skills don’t help.

Laine: The day I wrote the chase I watched the chase from “Bullitt” for inspiration. The Bortelles hill probably belongs in San Francisco. tongue

Leona: Much as they’d like to deny it. wink

Thanks for reading everybody!

Chapter Ten: Blackouts

Jav Yonx had never been shot before this night.

Now he’d been shot in the arm, shoulder, and neck, and was yet to receive more than a ragged bandage as treatment.

Now his CorSec contact was pointing a blaster at his face.

At least he’d finally gotten his name right.

“Remy, please.”

“Don’t.”

Jav hissed in air. “Three days ago, my good friend was framed for a crime he didn’t commit. I let him get away, and I’m sure it cost me the friendship of my partner. I knew I was going to be discharged for it – maybe charged with aiding and abetting a fugitive of the Empire. I also knew that Benali had been killed here. So I ran.

“I am not here because I’m some kind of vigilante. I am here because a man – another friend of mine – is dead. He deserves justice.”

“You sure have a lotta friends.”

“No.” Jav responded to the sarcasm with sadness, “Those were the three of them, and I lost them all in the space of a few hours.”

“The law–” Remy started.

“The law is not the same as justice,” Jav interrupted. “I just met you, but it’s clear you know that.”

He glowered at the conviction in Jav’s alien eyes. Remy’s heavy eyes flicked to the rain outside, then back again. His stomach churned with his blaster-caused anxiety. He cleared his throat. “Please. Put your hands behind your back.”

Jav hesitated. “I’m sorry.”

He swatted the Corellian’s blaster arm to the side and ran. Remy, frozen up, could do nothing until Jav was running out of the garage. He fired a shot that made its mark in the wall. “Sith!” he growled. Remy took chase.

Jav turned a corner and started running down the street, the thick brown garage wall rising on his left, and stinging pain on his right. Behind him, Remy’s sweating right hand still clutched his CDEF, while his left desperately held his fedora onto his head. Oversized rain drops pounded down as if the clouds were so many pistols with the triggers held and the safeties off. They passed the parking garage, and a handful of shops. A few civilians moved ahead.

“CorSec!” Remy yelled. “Stop that Duro!”

The small crowd stepped aside as Jav rushed past. Remy ran by them, a sarcastic “Thanks” on his lips.

Jav ducked into an alleyway on the left. Remy skidded in a couple seconds behind him, only to see the other clambering up onto a rusted fire escape attached to the building on the right.

“Sith,” Remy groaned. Quickly holstering his blaster, and hoisting his belt up a bit, he jumped. His fingers grazed the bottom rung and he landed back in a gray puddle. “Sith,” he muttered. Remy bent his knees and jumped again. This time, he got a grasp on the old corroded metal, and started hauling himself up.

Stepping through the remnants of a fourth story window, Jav found himself in a huge open room that indicated this had once been a warehouse of some sort. The lights were non-functioning, and everything was covered in a layer of dust, like volcanic ash. The main thing Jav noticed, though, was that he had nowhere to go.

Remy dove through the window, rolled, and came up on a newly aching ankle. “Sith!” he hissed. He stepped gingerly into the dark room, both hands on his blaster. “Jav!” he called. “Jav, you’re making this worse…”

Slowly, professionally, he checked behind each of the random man-sized crates spread intermittently about the room. Soon he’d cleared five of eight, and there didn’t seem to be any exit Jav could have used. Remy put his back up against the next crate, and his blaster down at arm-length. He spun around the corner, bringing his weapon up to aim.

A blurry dark object rapidly approaching, a heavy thud, and the sound of his own reflex shot were the last things Remy sensed before falling into unconsciousness.

Dr. Natille Kavuertes opened the door against her best judgment. “I already told you everything I know yesterday afternoon…” she griped. Her words trailed off as she noticed the red path on the floor that marked the man’s progress to her door. “Oh Force. I already have a patient. I can call an ambulance…”

Jav stood before her with blood escaping wounds in his neck, shoulder, arm – and worst the hole in his gut. “No hospitals,” he murmured, eyes fixed on some point beyond the woman.

The hall’s ceiling fading to black, Kavuertes’s voice, and the strange tingling feeling were the last things Jav sensed before falling into unconsciousness.

Space black faded to gray spots, then the light beige of the small med-center within Primary. It was little more than the nurse’s office of Remy’s school days – perhaps less, as it offered neither stickers nor candy.

He moaned, and slowly brought up a hand to touch his head. The bump was tender and egg-shaped. “Fantastic,” he muttered.

“Good morning, detective.”

“Prove it,” Remy replied groggily to the voice. His eyes searched the room for a moment before the twin realizations hit him. Kaede and I broke up. And she’s dead. He turned and saw an older, bald man sitting at his bedside. He groaned again.

Arnim Kolne spoke again. “As your superior officer, I don’t think I need to prove anything to you, Detective Diabet.”

Good morning? Superior officer? Full of deceptive terms today.”

“No deception,” Kolne replied coolly. “As of last night, I am in charge of all operations of Bortelles CorSec.”

Well that makes it an even worse morning, and doesn’t affect what an inferior officer you are, Remy thought. He merely grunted.

“Detective Diabet, your actions last night were entirely unacceptable.”

That’s what she said. “Sir, what happened to my head exactly?”

“Jav Yonx hit you with an electric quetarra.”

“Of course.”

“Citec found you above a run-down music store a couple blocks from the parking garage, and brought you in. There was no sign of Yonx. The med-droid tells me you’ll be fine, physically.”

“Best news I’ve heard yet. But its competition is crap.”

“Detective, I’m going to allow you a little leeway in your inappropriate tone as you’ve suffered a blow to the head. But I will not offer that in the case of what happened before that. You steal a speeder, which you then damage heavily in a reckless high-speed chase through downtown.”

Remy’s mind rushed to rebut. Reckless? It had reck! If anything, it was reckful! Wait. That doesn’t make any sense. Don’t say that.

Kolne continued, “You endanger countless lives, even knocking a vehicle off a bridge. And then you flee the scene.”

“Yonx was wounded; I had to get him to safety. I certainly didn’t see any assistance coming – despite my calls for backup.” He bit his lip. “The UnderTerra. Did you send uniforms there?”

“They were sent, yes. They found Kaede’s body, and the signs of the fight, and her canine unit.”

“Thief.”

“Pardon?”

“Kaede’s slice hound – her name is Thief.”

“Hmm.”

“What about Mannox?”

“Who?”

“Muerban Mannox, contract killer? He was at the hotel; he’s the one who killed Kaede. His body was right there in the lounge.”

“The man with false eyes. When our officers arrived there, he wasn’t.”

Remy sat up. “Then… Then the Royal’s men must have taken his body.”

“We have security camera footage, detective. He walked away, after you left. He was playing dead after Detective Thylum shot him.”

Remy’s eyes widened, and all traces of exhaustion left him in an instant.

Kaede’s killer is still out there.

Why? she wondered.

Kavuertes switched the bandage over Jav’s neck for a clean one. He seemed to be stable for now, but hadn’t regained consciousness yet. He would owe her extra for the plasma he’d needed; that much was certain.

So why am I treating him with no cash up front? She sighed. And a bloody cop of all things. You’re getting soft, Natille.

She moved to the sink in the middle of the small room dedicated to treating her clients. It only barely accommodated the extra bed she had set up the previous night for the Duro. After washing each hand thoroughly for precisely equal amounts of time, she moved to the first bed, exactly a meter from the other. There lay her other patient, the speeder accident victim who’d come in shortly before Jav.

Zelvyn Judas.
