Welcome! I've decided that as an exercise, because I really need some writing exercise, I'm going to try to write an extremely short drabble each and every day. I'll take a topic and from 10 mins. to an hour or so and just go at it. It should be good entertainment and good practice. Don't hesitate to tell me what you think or suggest any quick ideas. I'll also use this first post to index my drabbles for quick reference, below...

Even though these are meant to be relatively short and quick, I am highly encouraging any critique you can give-- well, except for the occasional ephemeral mispelled word which I've caught-- these are quick, after all tongue I mean any critique on presentation or style, which is what I'm trying to work on-- I'm 24, want to eventually become published as a fiction writer, and have taken quite a few workshop classes, so I'm willing to take anything you can dish out in a spirit of helpfulness. And thank you very much if you can!

Day 1: Leia the Senator

***

“I hereby swear to fulfil the oath of office, to execute my duties to the planet and people of Alderaan with all the strength I am given, and to always put their welfare above my own. This I attest, Leia of the house of Organa, together in the sight of the people in the city of Aldera,”

*

The man who named himself Sidious in private and Emperor in public grinned to himself. The girl was naïve, she would be an excellent hold on the core world until a more… permanent solution for the Organas was found. That name had been a thorn in his side for years, and still the time was not right for his plan. Such a pretty young girl, thinking herself strong enough to represent a planet… he had known that type before, and knew that it could be broken. Did they always stare through you like that, he wondered?

*

Bail Organa closed his eyes. His little Leia, still barely a young woman, but she had already shown that she was more than capable. He could see her now, datapad in hand at some formal dinner or other, idly tap-tapping at her law homework as a flashily dressed boy in a delegation from the outer rim vainly tried to catch her eye. Then Bail allowed himself to smile at his daughter, for once glad that all he had to feel was proud. Later, he would bitterly reflect that he had to be proud enough for himself and for Padme, wherever her soul might reside—and what the man once known as Anakin Skywalker would have thought, had he known his daughter followed in her mother’s footsteps, Bail Organa didn’t even allow himself to think about.

*

“We’re going to miss the ceremony, Artoo!”

The gold-plated mass of shuttering servos strained it’s walking pace to it’s absolute limit, which was still slower than a reasonably competent toddler. The blue-domed astrodroid riding along next to it was marginally faster, and pivoted about ten degrees down for a perfunctory nod. It’s holo attachment was already out, ready to capture the occasion for the royal family. See-Threepio waved a golden hand for it’s smaller partner to slow down.

The smaller droid did slow down, but only enough to keep the protocol model in sight. Keeping track of C-3PO was part of its recent reprogramming, after all—a part that the chatty droid was not to know about.

*

The princess of Alderaan exhaled a deep breath she had been holding in. This was what she had wanted for years, she told herself. She had always been taught that the tradition of the Royal House was to serve. Father was no longer able to play politics with the Imperials, keeping them from interfering with local affairs and setting up safe havens for refugees from half the planets in the known Galaxy. The Empire was too entrenched, his sympathies too open. They would suspect her too, of course, but she had a plan. Let them think her naïve, a do-gooder, someone who would get them good press for tolerance and compassion but who would be able to do nothing. She would look like the type, sure. There were advantages to being dismissed and disreagarded. Let her gain diplomatic immunity and a reputation for the wartime photo op. and food drop. She would do exactly that—the first few times. It raised a small smile on her lips thinking about it. And then all that was erased from her mind.

“Then in the sight of the people, Leia Organa, I hereby bestow upon you the title of Senator of Alderaan. As you vow to support this planet, may this planet support you. Your life essence is as our life essence and our life essence is as yours, in the Force and in the Will and in the Senate, as it has been for generations. Amen.”

Amen, Father. Peace—and Amen.

Day 2: Little Luke and the Gravestone

***

The last violet shimmer of setting sun was just disappearing over the horizon, and a relative chill finally came to the part of the desert where the Lars Moisture Farm lay. A steady breeze blew away the hottest air of the day, and the cooling glimmer of space winked invitingly above.

A four-year-old orphan named Luke Skywalker was not supposed to be outside this late at night, he was supposed to be in bed. Uncle Owen had told him that, repeatedly, it was not safe and a little boy out in the desert with no protection and all alone was just asking to get kidnapped by the Sand People. Uncle Owen himself had been pretty scary when he said that. But there was something about the night sky that fascinated Luke. There were other people just like them somewhere out there, he had been told so by Aunt Beru, places that weren’t like Tatooine, with white marble palaces and brightly-lit nightclubs and acres and acres of green. Someday he’d be a pilot and fly away from here, like his father, he thought, and see what was out there, and walk the sky. He tried to look for somewhere no one would notice him.

Not seeing where he was going, Luke tripped, slamming his knee and letting out a muffled cry over… something he’d never noticed before. A headstone, he realized, steadying himself against it, and trying to hold in a cry over his skinned knew which was starting to sting mightily.

Aunt Beru heard that, and after a few shouts and slammed doors she was kneeling beside him, her large hands hugging his shoulders and occasionally wiping his wet cheeks. She had brought a lamp with her, so the area was bathed in a pool of light and the stars, wet as his eyes were, were washed out. It did allow him to get a better look at the stone, though, and some of the aurebesh, he was delighted to find, was familiar. Skywalker

“Is that…?” was all he had the voice to say.

“Your grandmother,” whispered Beru, and whisked the boy off to the house, to wash him up and put a bacta patch on the scrape, and put him back to bed. Luke couldn’t sleep, though—and he thought he heard his aunt and uncle arguing about him.

The whole night must have been a dream, though, Luke decided a week later. Because as hard as he tried to find that headstone again—and he did-- he never could.

Day 3: Obi-Wan's (K)night of Self-Doubt

***

There is no passion, there is only the Force

Newly-minted Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi kept reciting that again and again in his mind, and had been doing so for days. The Council had given him his Knightship for an act that he never should have taken. A proper Jedi would never let anger get the better of him. A proper Jedi was an instrument of the Force, never to bend it to his own will but to let the Force bend him. It was himself, Obi-Wan Kenobi, that had thirsted for vengeance, not the Force.

Or had it? The young Jedi had not been paying attention. It was possible, he conceded—although, personally, he didn’t think it likely—that the Force had been exhorting him to do that. It would make him feel a great deal better about the situation to know that he had acted by the Will of the Force, the collective will of millions of people with him as he fought Jedi against Sith. A Sith was always alone, bending the twisted Dark Side to his will and no other. A Jedi was never without his fellow sentients chorusing in his mind, guiding him in everything.

Was it… permissible to add your own voice? To be like everyone else, just adding your voice and experience to the guiding rhythm of life? After all, Jedi are sentients, too. Could he not legitimately hurt and cry out in need?

No, that was a weak argument. A Jedi adding his own voice to the Force could overwhelm the voices of millions of organisms. That was beyond selfish. He was surprised he had even thought of it. He was not his usual self.

A million unworthy ideas flooded his mind. No. Obi-Wan was not going to tell the Council where they could put his Knightship, he was not about to vainly admonish a dead master for laying the burden of a padawan on him if the council would not accept. Just another kind of duty. He was not about to admonish fate itself… for taking away the only constant in his life, the only praise he ever got, the only person under whose guidance he felt that he was rewarded.

No—he had wanted to kill that Sith, whoever he was. Killing was permited, but wanting to kill was a personal failure. That he knew. But he had gotten reward from it, had wanted it, had reveled in it.

There is no passion, Obi-Wan Kenobi spoke allowed. There is only the Force.

Obi-Wan was calm again. For a little while.

We learn only from our mistakes. Mistakes were allowed, as long as they were corrected. It did not make him a flawed Jedi just because he made a mistake. Next he would think he was a Droid, following programming and only programming.

He would stay. He would teach Anakin about the Force, how to love and listen to the Force and enjoy it’s healing wisdom. Yes, he thought. He would teach Anakin exactly as he had been taught by Qui-Gon. There is no passion, there is only the Force. Live in the present moment, never in the future—the future is only a nebulous dream. And never, ever stop striving to be a better Jedi.

Darth Mama Moderator! How nice of you to show up grin I'm so glad you enjoyed it so much-- so glad you thought it beautiful! My concept for that passage was to accomplish a couple of things... one, to show that Obi-Wan had really decided to take what he'd learned through the experience and apply himself to being a teacher and taking up the challenge Anakin and the Order represented. But, two, I wanted to subtly hint a few things he does dogmatically, with the best intentions, and ultimately wrong, not quite understanding Anakin since the life of a Tatooine slave was so alien to him-- giving up passion, ignoring the future, and being hypercritical and perhaps fueling an innate insatiable drive to be the best, always.

Had a bit of trouble today, Darth Writer's Block is a Sith! doh!

***

Day 4: Vader's Imperial Intelligence Report

***

The Dark Lord of the Sith was very glad that he had read this particular intelligence report in the privacy of his own quarters.

There is to be a ceremony tomorrow to honor two pilots who made the attack on the Death Star successful. One is the pilot of the smuggler craft which rescued Princess Leia Organa—also being sought for blasting his way out of Mos Eisley on Tatooine and, reportedly, by the thugs of Jabba the Hutt for reneging on a contract. The other is only nineteen and the pilot who fired the successful shot. Rumor has it that he had only signed up the day of the attack and had never flown an X-Wing before in his life. His name is Luke Skywalker.

Skywalker. He should have known that Kenobi would be so cruel as to hide his own son from him. He should have known, somehow. His former master had hidden not only himself, but his son on that Force-forsaken planet.

This had to be approached with caution. He had felt the Force stirring around the boy when he was… trying to shoot him down. Pause. Well, yes, but there hadn’t exactly been an alternative, had there? Kenobi again, no doubt about it, had warped his son’s mind into believing in the Rebel cause. Something would have to be done about that. Surely when he understood that it was a loosing battle, that the Empire brought stability and order, he would join them, and he would have his son at his side. As it should be. He would never stop cursing his old Master for that.

The Empire had to be heavy-handed because of groups like the Rebels. If it were simply accepted, there would be no reason to complain. Eventually the Empire would simply be accepted, and there would be no reason to impose such draconian measures. The Death Star itself was the epitome of this—after Alderaan, none would dare complain again. It was supposed to ensure peace, and without thinking they just blow it up! Yes, he would be persuasive.

And with Luke at his side-- not even the Emperor would dare cross him.

Haven't had a chance to read these yet, but just wanted to say that I'm planning on it (and this is my proof tongue ).

It looks like an interesting idea and I can't wait until I have the chance to actually read them. grin (Hopefully only a bit later today.)

EDIT(1):
I really liked the Leia perspective! happy I never really thought of her becoming a Senator and that was a very good idea for it. I really liked her thoughts at the end. grin

EDIT(2):
Awww!! Poor little Luke! sad He finally finds something about his family and just as quickly, loses it. sad I understand that Owen wanted to protect him but it just seems a little extreme... Oh well, I guess it just shows how much Owen loved him and wanted to protect him from the horrors of his family history.

Very nice! happy

hugs It's good to se you too! happy It's been forever... blush But I needed a little break from Star Wars and now I'm back. happy

And on your 3rd drabble:

I really loved Obi-Wan's thoughts here! grin I could definitely see where he was coming from and it was very well written. happy

EDIT: (On drabble 4)
I really liked the Vader perspective. It's sorta like a missing scene from between ANH and ESB and I really like that idea. It's the 'how' of how Vader found out about Luke. I really liked it. grin

Here's a real short one today...

Day 5: Things Unspoken

***

Luke was still shivering.

He wanted to tell Leia. Thank you. I need someone here I know. The sound wouldn’t leave his lips. Thank you for rescuing me.

And the worst of all, the one on the tip of his tongue. I found my father, Leia. Vader. Vader’s my father. But she wouldn’t understand. She’d either look at him angrily, knowing that he was the son of the person they were both fighting—although he didn’t really believe that one, it was a possibility—or she’d look at him pityingly. It wasn’t about pity, it was about the truth. Not knowing the truth had hurt, a lot.

The truth, and figuring out what was actually going on. How on earth could he be Darth Vader’s son? It didn’t seem plausible. His father was Anakin Skywalker.

Vader had been Ben’s apprentice, he’d been told, though-- in addition to his father. That was what it boiled down to—Ben hadn’t told him the truth. That hurt too.

When Leia slipped the temporary prosthesis on his arm, he didn’t even notice the pain of his arm. The rest was too raw in his mind to concentrate on anything else. She didn’t seem to mind that he didn’t respond—seemed to understand his thanks anyway. Thanks, I needed that hug. I need someone to hold on to. He just… couldn’t say it.

Day 6: Hope Flies

***

That’s it, the next time Threepio interrupts us, I don’t care how useful he is at talking to the Falcon, I’ll interrupt him with a three foot hydrospanner. I swear, that droid has the lousiest timing! I think it has ‘keep Han Solo away from Leia Organa’ programmed as a primary directive.

Han couldn’t even stay all that mad at Threepio, though. He still had a giddy smirk on his face. Leia had been about to kiss him, actually kiss him, she was holding his hands and looking at him in that dreamy way she had of making you feel like the luckiest man in the galaxy, like you actually had a chance—and they almost kissed. That exquisite thought, that he wasn’t imagining things with her—that was enough for the moment.

He had had women before, and with any of the others he would have just given up by this point. But there was something about Leia that wouldn’t let him do that. As long as he still had a hint of a chance, he couldn’t let this woman who had come to rule his life go. She had taken command over his heart the very same way she had taken command of her own rescue from the clutches of the Empire.

There would be another day—with no Hyperdrive, there would be many more days. He had never—never really thought of that as a blessing before, but working on the Falcon was play to him. It was what life was all about, here, drifting between the stars with his baby, just him and Chewie and his wonderful, beautiful, feisty princess.

And Threepio, unfortunately. Whoever had programmed that droid’s personality could go straight to the deepest circle of the Nine Corellian Hells, as far as he was concerned.

She had taken command over his heart the very same way she had taken command of her own rescue from the clutches of the Empire.
love Loved that!!
