Day 7: Brave Enough to Walk the Edge

***

A barrage of blaster bolts from a swarm of speederbikes raked the canyon from above, two blue lightsabers deflecting them faultlessly back toward their sources. Obi-Wan took point, taking the heaviest rain of blaster fire, and Anakin followed behind taking an intensely defensive stance in front of the gang’s goal. When one bike lost control and flew into the rocky abyss, the others seemed to realize that this was a losing battle. They left, but not before a final attempt at taking out their target.

Anakin!

The boy’s voice echoed up a steep cliff. “Down here, Master. It’s alright—I caught the girl, we’re both all right.”

Obi-Wan let out a breath he’d been holding. “Don’t scare me like that.” He stepped to the edge and looked down—it was only a ten meter drop to a ledge where he could see Anakin holding the child they had found running from the speederbike gang. There was, he thought, something just fundamentally wrong about a society where a speederbike gang would target a child…

“Ah… Master. Could you bring the ship to us?”

He nodded. “ Of course. This ledge is a little steep to just jump back up carrying her…”

Anakin grimaced, cutting him off. “No, I think I broke my ankle.. Just get the ship!”

***

It would be a full week before Anakin was walking normally—his ankle had to be reset by the Jedi Healers to make sure that it wouldn’t present any problems in the future.

“What am I going to do with you, Anakin?” He laid a hand on the back of Anakin’s chair.

The boy grinned. “Find a padawan who isn’t as good at catching kids diving out of the way of blaster fire?”

Obi-Wan found himself returning that grin. “I was thinking more along the line of a padawan who doesn’t find himself in the med ward at the end of every trip.”

“It’s been half a year since I was in here!”

Obi-Wan leaned against the chair. “Maybe I should have them reserve a bed in here for you,” he said dryly.

Anakin picked up his master’s subtle humor, saying it was against the code for such a material possession to be reserved for the use of a single Jedi. He had never been so glad to hear Anakin complain.

Day 8: I Thought It Would Be Easier

***

I thought I knew what working on the Death Star would be like.

I mean… sure, it has the name ‘Death’ in it. That’s just a name, right? I’m not superstitious. It’s supposed to frighten people. I’m not stupid.

It’s a flaming space station, where the only people you come in contact with are other Imperials. It’s not the kind of job where you’re deployed onto the planet and have to live up to the name of Stormtrooper by blasting everything and everyone in sight. I’m not a TIE pilot, dodging X-wing fire by a tenth of a meter. If you’re lucky.

It was supposed to be a desk job, for Galaxy’s sake!

But then Lord Vader showed up, and it all went to the outer rim. One person down because someone let the Rebels steal the plans to the station. Yellow alert. When a junky smuggler’s ship—which was scanned and deemed empty! – turns out to be not so empty, and somehow the princess escapes from the most secure detention cell in the entire station.

Well, we’re red alert now. Supposedly there are fifteen men already down, whether from Vader’s wrath or whoever let the Princess out, I don’t know. They’re apparently coming my way.

I’ve never been a superstitious man, but if it will get me off this place alive, I’ll believe in that Force of Vader’s. At least he seems able to use it. If this is in any way a backlash for Alderaan,.. Maybe doing it the old fashioned way, one at a time, wouldn’t be so bad. I never thought about it when I signed up, that we’d be killing more people than if we all just went at it on an entire population. I just thought a space station would be an easier place to be stationed.

I was wrong.

Day 9: Bittersweet Returns (Obi-Wan, Vader, others)

***

He wasn’t sure if he could do it… the middle of a lightsaber fight with Anakin in the cargo bay of the Death Star was not exactly what he would call a good environment for concentration. He had to be prepared to give himself over completely, but still parry every blow until then. He would know the right moment, feel it calling to him. It hadn’t quite come yet.

He unclipped a disused lightsaber and took a rest stance for the first time in years.

If he’d been younger. His opponent not yet given over to hate and the Dark Side. It would be easy. Saber practice in those days, the same pair that were going at it now. It had been a favored form of meditation. For the both of them, Anakin having little patience. Not for traditional fixed meditations. Forms were fixed. The enemy known. A hiss of a lightsaber blade-- more like a symphony. There was no more telling comparison.

Red against blue, blue against red. He was, somehow- miraculously- holding his own. Desert suns burned out nonessentials, but left sinew and muscle. The Sith forgot that-- Always. Underestimate. Hardship.

He could never know Anakin now. Not really. Not that the mask hid his emotions, or the voicebox. That filters out everything sounding remotely human, just taunting him further, as things are. Tthey were necessary, and just machine. No, Anakin was gone from this shell of a body. At a much deeper level. He had no hope of reaching, it himself. The man was gone.

He found he could find a sort of meditative quality in the concentration he needed, which was just as well. He was being called.

Luke, he saw through a dim haze. Scared. But he was not. He was content as ever at the thought that friends and mentors were near and he would hear them speak again soon. He was the one still grain of sand in a storm. Yes, that thought brought a response. Too late.

There was only the void, sweet, and there was stabbing pain. A single voice crying out… he was already gone. Luke, Run!

Consciousness diffused out of a region of confusion and turmoil into the Great Unknown, an occasional whisp of something he knew, but cohesiveness was a losing battle until he touched something substantial, and found himself again with the strength he used to have. “Master!”

He could name himself with confidence again, Obi-Wan Kenobi of the Jedi. Ben was no more than an alias.

Obi-Wan Kenobi had come home.

Day 10: Reassessment (Lando, others)

***

This is awkward. Actually, that’s an understatement.

I agree to give this guy I don’t even know over to Vader and his boys, right? Because if I don’t cooperate my entire city gets silenced. Not to mention they somehow know my friend’s coming this way and they’re planning on nabbing him to use as bait, the alternative being that he just gets nabbed, and Cloud City shut down and me dead, in all likelihood. I thought so—Vader isn’t much on sticking to contract. Sorry, Chewie—best I could do, I can’t help find him if you choke me dead.

And that’s not the awkward part, although it is pretty embarrassing. Even Leia’s laid off me for now, and she was giving me death glares.

Awkward part is, I never expected to talk with this person that Vader wanted to meet so badly. It’s pretty clear that they met, all right. The kid lost a hand. How he even got away from Vader is a mystery to me.

I don’t know what to say to him. Sorry? That wouldn’t cover it. I don’t think he’d want to hear, ‘It was you or us, kid. And I chose us.” Something tells me he wouldn’t understand that. Something, like those questioning eyes and the way he’s not wiping the tear on his cheek. It’s no Sabacc face.

But if I don’t say anything, it’s always going to be there at the back of my mind when I see him. You don’t know this, but I was the reason you don’t have a hand, kid. I’m the reason you were… hanging upside down from the subspace antenna, who knows how you got out there.

I’m the reason Han’s not here to greet you. Leia told me you two were good friends.

And now I’ve lost one of mine, because I had a city to run. Profits to make. A businessman. I hated being a businessman.

It’s been too long. I hide in the cockpit, fingers falling upon familiar dials and switches. Because I dread the reflection I would see of myself in that boy’s eyes.

cry Oh wow!! I just had to quote this whole part! So very well done! applause rose I'd never really given much thought to the way Lando felt about the whole Cloudy City ordeal, how he might feel guilt for what happened to Luke.

ANNOUNCEMENT: this thread is now indexed for convenience on the first post, listing each drabble and where to find them. I'll update it when I update the thread title each day. happy

dancing_star: Thank you! hugs I'm glad you enjoyed it. Lando just feels so guilty for everything at that point, I think, the way he tries to apologise and still gets creamed by Chewie- I just imagined what he'd feel at seeing Luke dangling from that antenna without a hand. sad The fun of this is definitely exploring/imagining stuff about the movies you'd never thought about before happy

Day 11: The Caf Menace (humor, ESB, OC)

***

We’d better keep this one quiet. The security implications are enormous, and it could even mean the end of the Rebellion. If we don’t send out a mission to deal with it right away, I don’t want to think what could happen. The Empire could catch us napping on the job!

You see, Echo Base has officially run out of caf.

Oh, don’t worry about getting food shipments through Imperial lines and allowing them to trace you here, we set up greenhouses. We’ve got every cold -weather edible plant from Coruscant to the outer rim growing in there, just a little warmer than it is outside.

But caf? Forget about it. The trees the beans come from won’t grow at less than tropical temperatures, which is a little difficult to achieve when the outside air is sub-freezing. And with the energy balance so critical to keeping us hidden, we can’t afford to build a tropical hothouse in a frozen wilderness.

Trees themselves take up a lot of room we don’t have, if they would produce enough caf beans for everyone on the base daily. Do you have any idea how much caf an entire rebel base can drink in a day? You’d be surprised, trust me. I should know. I volunteered to be the cafeteria coordinator for Echo Base, and I see the figures for how much is eaten and drunk daily by the entire rebel alliance. Before we used up all the caf we brought downplanet, each person was drinking five cups of caf a day on average, accounting for waste—no one wants to drink a cup of cold caf. That’s a heck of a lot of beans to transport down here without being seen. Every single day.

I think the risks outweigh the benefits in this case, though. Soon now, there will be drowsy guards, drowsy patrols, and drowsy med techs. Even Mon Mothma and General Ackbar will be lolling their eyes at briefings, along with half the Ruling Council. I can see the command center now, diligent workers tugging at their eyelids to stay awake, when someone unintentionally misses the Imperials landing right in front of us.

So please, send someone out, anyone who can get this critical job done and done quickly. A mission must be sent to buy Echo Base some more caf! The Rebel Alliance depends on it.

Day 12: All the Beeps of My Proccessor Chip (Threepio, Artoo, ANH)

***

Where is Artoo trying to do? He’s clearly going to wrong way to find whatever civilization is on this planet. Mountains my circuits… he won’t be able to get anywhere in even rolling hills. There are no paths to on this planet to cater to his wheel treads, we’re better off sticking to sand. If he wants to go that way, I won’t stop him, but I do wish he would reconsider. I’m not going that way.

This heat is going to fry my circuitboard. I should curse that little droid for suggesting we use that escape pod… this planet is no better than getting captured by the Imperials. At least they have adequate mechanics. I’m sure there are places a protocol droid could be useful in the Empire. I can’t imagine who could use a protocol droid out here on the outer rim. Artoo and his ‘mission’ from the princess… whatever that is.

I followed him, curse my faulty wiring. And he’s somewhere out there, probably strewing parts all over the desert. Babbling on about some ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’. Oh, I wish I could hear those beeps of his again, though.

I don’t know what to do with myself without his beeps.

Day 13: The Fellowship of the Asteroid Ring (Luke, Han, humor, LOTR)

***

Luke broke into his signature wide grin, holding out a hand toward the screen. In confidence, he was a far cry from the shy boy who had joined the alliance not so long ago.

“I’m glad we’ve got such a turnout tonight! Rogue Squadron is pleased to host the All-Alliance Holo Night this evening—so leave worrying about Imperials outside and pick up some food at the tables near the door. The first holo we’ll be showing is ‘The Fellowship of the Asteroid Ring.’ Artoo?” The little droid gave a rising beep in recognition. “Hit it!”

Luke shuffled off the stage to his seat in the front row next to Leia, who was flanked by Han on the other side, and the lights began to dim.

***

“That chase scene isn’t even remotely plausible,” Han complained, over Leia’s shoulder. “There’s no way the TIE pilots would be outrun through the asteroids by four midgets with no experience.”

“They weren’t,” Luke explained. “Frodo activated the cloaking device on his ship to make it to Bree Station. Weren’t you paying any attention?”

Leia shot them a cold glare, which they both missed

“But I thought that activated the tracking sensor?”

“It did… watch!”

The TIE fighters caught up to Bree Station and Frodo, but were fought off by a man in a ship looking suspiciously like the Falcon.

“Who’s that? No smuggler I know would risk his neck for a bunch of people he didn’t know… What.?”

Leia was trying to contain a chuckle.

Luke rolled his eyes. “It’s Strider. Just watch, ok?”

“Will you two be quiet? I’m trying to watch.”

***

Most of the audience was sleeping by the time they got to the end of “Return of the Chancellor”, about eleven hours later. Luke and Han were still arguing, over the elegantly snoring form of Princess Leia.

“Okay, I’ll buy that Strider—excuse me, Chancellor Aragorn—was the Chancellor all along. Gandalf coming back from the Force doesn’t make any sense.”

“Well, I’ve never heard about it. But he was a Jedi…”

Han rolled his eyes. “It’s just a holo, Luke. Don’t get your hopes up.”
