dancing_star: Thank you so much as always, my devoted reader! rose ; Yeah, I'm sure it was definitely difficult for her, and the angst factor is ramped up a lot when we know what happens sad

Question: Has this perhaps turned into Shrunken's 'vignette-a-day' thread? tongue I seem to be getting longer, I've noticed...

***

Day 26: It's Something Else (Luke, Han, Leia)

***

Her hair smelled like tree sap, sweet and spicy clean despite the smoke and dirt she, like the rest of them, had been through. Maybe it was the loose hair, but the peasant look suited her. Han pressed Leia tight against him like it was the last night the universe would ever see. He closed his eyes, lost in her softness. Lost in her warmth, and smell.

Then he opened his eyes for a minute, and of all the sights he imagined seeing in front of him, there was Luke walking up with a bowed head, looking like something the bantha dragged in—he was vaguely limping, gritted his teeth occasionally, and kept rubbing his elbow.

Leia—of course—ran over and put her arms around his shoulders and encased him in a hug that would do Chewie proud. Did she not consider that maybe—just maybe—he didn’t want to be touched at that particular moment? He shuffled over, himself. Leia might be the most brilliant politician of all time as far as he was concerned, a beautiful, brilliant, constant wonder of a woman—but she was dealing with Luke in a typically female fashion.

“Kid…” he tried to crack a smirk. “So you aren’t ashes and stardust on us. We got the job done without you, I hope you’ll notice, wandering off like that…”

The kid blanched. He knew he wasn’t funny all the time, but… something was definitely very, very wrong. Leia’s expression became even more concerned than it had been before. He had more than a few ideas after hearing what Leia had told him in confidence, but without knowing exactly what had happened up there, that’s all they were—ideas.

He took out a flask of Corellian brandy and handed it to the kid. “Drink. It’ll come out.” Luke took a couple of swigs of it, during which Leia had to help him calm a coughing fit.

That did seem to calm him down a little. “You know already?”

“Some,” he nodded. “I don’t know how long it’s going to take me to get used to the idea, but if it means I have Her Loveliness,” he gave Leia a smug little grin which she returned shyly, “ to myself, I’m all for the idea. Just as long as I don’t have to ask Darth Vader’s permission or something…”

He wasn’t expecting a warm reception with that one or anything, but made Luke blanch again, flinching violently and rubbing his elbow to a rhythm it seemed only he could hear. Which Han was definitely not expecting, and he gritted his teeth.

“You’re… not against me and Leia being, well, you know?” The kid shook his head violently. That was obviously not the problem, which was comforting on some level, but…

Leia almost seemed more stricken. “Luke, what happened?”

He still seemed uncomfortable. Bantha dung, of course he does.

“It’s me, kid. And Leia. Remember, we saw you in your skivvies in bacta, half frozen and delirious, and,” this he deliberately overemphasized, “even with that ridiculous ‘lightsaber training’ helmet you can’t even see out of. “

He could see he was finally drawing a smile.

“So. Fire?”

Luke nodded, taking a gulp of air, Leia still supporting him by the shoulder.

“He came back. To the Light Side. And I couldn’t save him…”

Day 27: Turn About is Fair Play (Anakin, Obi-Wan, Siri, humor)

***

Obi-Wan Kenobi suppressing chuckles in front of the apartment he shared with the mischievous Anakin Skywalker was not exactly an ordinary sight. That, and the fact that he really hadn’t talked with the young Master in quite a while, made Yoda decide to stop his hoverchair and find out what was going on.

The redheaded Jedi immediately schooled his face into a more neutral expression (although there was still a hint of amusement around his lips,) and bowed. “Master.”

“Obi-Wan, good it is to see you looking so well. Ask, I may, what is amusing you so much? Correct would I be, if I assumed your Padawan something about this has to do? ”

Obi-Wan nodded. “You would be, Master. Do you remember how he took out his light last year practicing his saber forms at home instead of the practice rooms?”

Yoda did remember. Obi-Wan had been debating over whether to let the boy off easy that time since he actually had been trying to practice. For once.

“Well, he broke every one of our mirrors the same way a week ago-- he was trying to see himself from every angle-- and he’s been grounded except for practice and classes and I told him no replacement until he found some way of reimbursing the accounting office for the expense.”

The older Jedi nodded approvingly.

“Apparently some of the padawans his age are having a costume party, and he’s already been grounded enough, so I’m allowing him to go. He wanted to go with his face painted like a droid and use some old plate coverings as a costume and, well, he hasn’t got a mirror and isn’t very good with makeup so he asked me to ask Siri if she’d paint his face… Now, understand me, I wouldn't have asked her to do this if he hadn't dyed my hair silver while I was sleeping to see if the color would work on him for the costume...”

***

Anakin walked into the room and it erupted with the laughter of young padawans. He didn’t understand it, he was just going as a droid… Siri Tachi had assured him that he looked just fine!

Then he noticed a smudge of white makeup on his makeshift metallic gauntlet. White?
He heard Jak yell ‘nice lipstick!’ from across the room, which erupted into more laughter. Lipstick? He brought his hand up to his lip and sure enough, the gauntlet came away with a smudge of bright red. And then he noticed it in the reflection in the gauntlet… white with bright red on his lower lip, all right. Siri Tachi had painted his face exactly like the tradional makeup of the Queen of Naboo!

He groaned. And he thought his Master had no sense of humor.

Here we go... I suddenly got the idea to parody 'Twas the Night before Christmas' devil Disclaimer: Obviously, I don't own the original poem, and I don't own the characters or the GFFA tongue

Day 28: 'Twas Republic Day Eve (Parody of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas')

***

'Twas Republic Day eve when tucked in their beds

All the Jedi were sleeping, just nodding their heads;

Lightsabers were hung on the wall with great care,

With no expectation to need them right there;

The padawans nestled all snug in their robes,

With visions of fireworks cov’ring the globes;

From Coruscant hi-rise, to Tatooine shack,

The skies would turn bright shades instead of just black,

And out on the balcony they’ll see the clatter,

The bang and the fwoosh, a chemical matter.

Away to the window they’ll go with a flash,

Tear open the shutters and throw up the sash.

A sign on the crest of a building will show,

Give the lustre of mid-day to objects below,

When, what to their wondering minds should appear,

But a fistful of doubt, and a pinch more or fear,

With a little old Sith man, so evil and sick

They want to wake up, right away, double quick.

More rapid than spaceships he whispered their names,

And got into their heads so to taunt with mind games;

"Now, Dash! now, Dan! now, Pratep and Vena!

On, Cade! on Carter! on, Donnie and Reeta!

From the top of the Temple! To the lowest of all!

You will away! disappear! dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

Their minds shied away once again towards the sky

Up there in a shiny new spaceship he flew,

A scary old sith, who had hailed from Naboo.

And then, in a twinkling, each child came awake

Thinking their fast-beating heart would soon break.

With my hand to my head, I was turning around,

When before me I saw my good Master, sans sound.

He was dressed all in brown, from his head to his foot,

And his clothes were all rumpled, hair not staying put;

A warm, wrinkled hand he laid on my back,

And he looked at me smiling- just a crack

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

Wondering, now what was up, I just know

He’d ‘felt a disturbance’, gritted his teeth

But having him there was somehow a relief;

His hands held my face and I told what I’d dreamt,

The whispers, and rumors—I got all verklempt*.

He said to buck up, and say to myself,

It was no more the truth than that Yoda’s an elf

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

I thought then I knew I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went back to repose,

While fitfully, I tried to return to a dose,

I saw yellowish eyes and a crooked old nose,

Off into the stars the cackling Sith rose;

He tainted all in sight to the Republic edge,

A wave, a whisper, an in and a wedge.

And it must be a nightmare, for he yelled from his height,

"Happy Empire Day to all, and to all a good fright!"

*Yiddishism, meaning to get so emotional it’s hard to talk. I know it’s out of place but it fit so well for the rhyme and the meaning I had to use it tongue

Day 29: A Pox on This! (Luke, others)

***

Luke began hacking up a veritable sandstorm. He’d been feeling lousy all day, thinking to himself he needed a vacation, a headache keeping him from being able to concentrate on the simulator or on what any of his pilots were telling him, and a chill that made him want to snuggle back into bed and sleep off whatever was ailing him. When he’d noticed Luke’s cough trying to brief the Rogues on maneuvers, though, Wedge was adamant—to the med ward. The rest of them could practice alone for the day—they needed to practice uncoordinated maneuvers without getting in each other’s way anyway, if they ever lost contact or had a situation where that strategy would be useful.

So here he sat, violently coughing, shivering, and with a headache that would incapacitate a Nerf.

The doctor looked grave, and openly admitted he’d never heard a cough quite like what was coming out of his mouth, but it could really be just about anything. He shrugged and took a cotton swab of his mouth, which he put on a dish presented by a large, solid med droid, and typed something in. The droid responded in cheery bright tones:

“Patient sample presents unusual concentrations of: Varicella Corellianus!”

Corellian Vynock Pox. Weren’t you supposed to itch all over with those? Just about everyone in the Inner Rim got that at some point or another when they were kids, but usually only once.

The doctor noted that it wasn’t really Vynock Pox in most adults, just the same virus—which was why he wasn’t itching. Just coughing and aching.

Hadn’t he ever had Vynock Pox, the doctor asked, genuinely surprised? He hadn’t. Actually, he never knew anyone on Tatooine who’d had Vynock Pox, come to think of it. That probably explained why he had it now.

The doctor patiently explained that it was bound to put him out of commission for a week. Luke groaned. This wasn’t the kind of vacation he’d asked for.

*

Note: no, I don't know anyone with chicken pox or rickets at the moment. I was just thinking for some reason about the potential for different common diseases on different GFFA worlds and it ocurred to me that if Luke got the pox at an older age 'cause he was raised on a backwater desert world and then exposed to it when he joined the rebellion... purely an intellectual exercise, luckily tongue

Day 30: Of Holos and Memories (Vader)

***

Vader palmed a holo off his desk, pressed it to bring it to life. He had borrowed enough credits for a small house for this, finding someone who could actually get it for him (by less than legal means, naturally), paying off anyone who asked too many questions about why the right hand of the Emperor was so desperate to get his hands on a photo of the funeral of Padme ‘Amidala’ Neberrie. Neberrie, not even Skywalker—she had been loyal to him at least in that, in honoring his wish that their marriage be secret. Secret! The cruel hand of fate that erased her completely from his past. That brown river of hair, those soft lips and eyes. He had almost forgotten them—how could he? The only thing he would have saved from that past. And that this had been the only way he could see her safely rested…

He had stayed angry at her for nearly twenty years after that nightmare, and he wasn’t quite sure how it was that he couldn’t bring himself to hate her anymore. it was only in the last year that he had procured that holo… which was part of the price. It ran slow, the colors were faded towards blue. The lines of light were more pronounced, less smooth. Somehow, in that past year, he couldn’t stay angry at her anymore. He could see she was right… she had known he would have to do. What he had thought was the right thing. How could he not try to save her? How could believing a friend be wrong? Surely she would have the answer he didn’t know to those questions.

And then, there it was, taunting him—the swell of her abdomen. Their child survived, he knew that now, the last piece of her, and no one—not even Palpatine—had told him. Oh, he was sure he knew—something about the way he had talked about Luke. A great asset indeed.

He will be on my side, Old Man. My side. You wait and see. We shall wreak vengeance upon you…

And then he looked back at the holo, and could only feel regret. Longing. Sadness. And he knew not why.

cry Wasn't there some missing her and nostalgia mixed in there (even a little)?

Because you're widowed maybe? raised_brow For all his battle prowess, Vader could be clueless.

Day 31: Contradictions (Leia, mush)

***

He’s a scoundrel. But he loves me.

He’s a coward, there’s nothing he cares about. He ducks responsibility the second he can, he would do nothing unless it was to get him money. It’s all he cares for. Except that I’ve seen him be brave. For Luke, Chewie, for the Falcon, for the Alliance even… staying when he could have gone months ago.

For me. Getting me out of there, when I could have lost my life by staying at the command center too late.

He’s irreverent. He pays no heed to the command structure, he jokes about everything under the suns. He calls me ‘Her Highnessness’—why does he do that? But when he says it—it’s like he’s calling me a queen, like a joke between just us.

He’s vulgar. He touches my hands with grease, he gets far too close. He flirts shamelessly.

Yes, he’s a scoundrel. So why do I love him?

Today's drabble is somewhat morbid, so be warned...

Day 32: Ironies are to be Savoured Alone (OC Stormtrooper)

***

The last message that ever got sent from the Death Star—‘The Rebels are done for.”

It was an ironic thing to say, certainly, and for sure it would never get on the news holos. But the Imperial commander who registered the transmission felt a certain twinge of irony among the horror when minutes later the next message he received was Darth Vader relaying the sabotage of the Space Station by a small Rebel fleet of X-wings.

How in the Galaxy did X-wings blow up a Space Station? He sure didn’t know. Of course, he didn’t know how the Death Star was supposed to blow up an entire planet, either—which was no small part of the irony his mind was registering. A space-station designed to annihilate a planet itself gets annihilated.

It was war, and he had known a man or two on board—who had not? It was the biggest project in the area. However, he had lost friends before, better friends and more. It was war, after all. But the destruction, it was… a truly mindboggling thing. Hard to actually get his mind around the amount of destruction that had been caused between Alderaan and the destruction of the Death Star. So he found the humor in the situation.

“The Rebels are done for’. Hah. That was what he’d remember about the day. Of course, if he told anyone, they’d bring him in for evaluation for being so callous, so he wouldn’t say a thing. But that was alright. Such a morbid joke was best savoured alone.

Day 33: Deserted and Found (OC Trader)

***

A trader came past a rock cave on a day that was even hotter than normal, hopelessly distorting the surroundings in a heat-haze, double-shadows from two suns still elongated in the early morning glare. His bantha plodded along, well adapted for the climate but not for the day’s extraordinary heat. Grudgingly, the man conceded that there was no recourse—he was not going to get very far today. Perhaps if he rested and set out again in the evening.

The cave turned out to be quite accessible—a clear worn path wound its way to the entrance, and the floor was smooth.

Still, it showed no sign of recent habitation—until he found a certain corner hidden on a sill in the back, which would be protected from sandstorms and the prying eyes of sandpeople and jawas. There, he found several wooden chests. One held, neatly folded and impeccably clean, several brown robes on top of other neutral-colored clothing. There was a small camp stove that looked to be of good sturdy workmanship but truly old design, along with some dishes of native clay. In one chest, in the corner and unlike the others of richly-worked metal, was a collection of documents on flimsi, which he couldn’t read, some handwritten and some scribed, and an assortment of odd items. A box with metal parts, rings and knobs, and some sort of bright-blue crystal. A japor-snippet carving of a Ronto with both an Aurebesh ‘Osk’ and its Tatooinian glyph equivalent. A holo-reader stuck on the image of two young men in outfits with a similar vestlike element held in by a wide and complicated belt—an older, redheaded man in light brown, and a younger man with hair like sand in dark leather and a lighter inner tunic. They were both smiling brightly.

The trader put the holo-reader down, and something in his conscience told him his time was better spent in the rest of the cave.
