Okay, finally a new one tongue

***

Day 41: Fire and Ice Two (Luke)

***

“Dagobah. Ben…”

The apparition of Ben Kenobi dissolved into mid air. Luke tried to raise his head to see what was coming—did that Wampa have a friend?—but he was too weak and it was too cold. His face hit the snow instead.

***

What happened? His nerves were on fire. The entire surface of his skin hurt all over, and where it wasn’t pain it was itch. He tried to breathe, but…

He coughed instead, and warm liquid entered his lungs. Warmth. The smell of bacta.

He wasn’t dead, he wasn’t mauled, and he wasn’t freezing. He wasn’t even dreaming. He was, in fact, swimming in a tank of warm bacta, almost certainly in Hoth Base’s medical ward.

He had better get out of there before he choked on the stuff.

***

Luke was just glad to get clean again and get the smell of bacta out of his nose, but clean clothes certainly helped. There were still some evidence of cuts on his skin, but he’d expected that. He shook his head as he walked back to his cot in the med ward—they wanted to keep him a little while longer.

This time, though, he noticed an out-of-place hand-scribed piece of flimsi on the table next to his bed, beside the chair where the med tech had been sitting.

Whoever’s looking after Commander Skywalker… Tell me when the he’s awake and aware, or there’ll be Hutts to pay, and I know a bit about that. I didn’t go out in that hell of a snowstorm to rescue the kid to not give him a good welcome back to the world of the living when he wakes up.

-Han Solo,

He just stood there for a second, and then he laughed. And then he blushed.

Day 42: The Lesson (Obi-Wan, Anakin)

***

It was Anakin’s second official day at the Jedi Temple, the first being given over to making sure he had everything necessary he would need to start his studies, and showing him around the place so he wouldn’t get lost. The one thing he’s been looking forward to most only started now—his first lightsaber lesson.

“Alright, Anakin,” Obi-Wan spoke in his ‘teaching’ voice. “I know you’ve seen lightsabers in action. I want you to forget everything you remember about that—I don’t want you trying any of it now. They aren’t toys and they aren’t to be used lightly. It’s not like hitting someone with a metal rod, right?”

Anakin nodded sullenly. He knew how to deal with dangerous stuff that required finesse—he raced pods! He wasn’t going to do anything stupid. But how was he supposed to learn if he wasn’t going to be able to try stuff out on his own?

“Don’t give me that look. Now, I want to show you some simple forms. This is called…”

Obi-Wan gave a demonstration of a number of ‘forms’, all defensive, and all of which to Anakin’s mind looked—well, they all looked like just holding your lightsaber up in front of you, to his mind. This was not at all what he’d expected. He expected something exciting from a lightsaber class. He told Obi-Wan so. “It’ll help me learn, sir.”

“Please, call me Master, Anakin.”

The boy flinched.

“I know, Anakin, I’m sorry about that. It’s tradition, and expected. I’m not trying to…” Obi-Wan looked sheepish, then thoughtful. “Look, if it will help, I’ll give you that lightsaber demonstration you asked for, all right?”

Anakin nodded. He definitely wanted to see that lightsaber in action.

Obi-Wan stood in the center of the room, straight as a durasteel rod. He slowly raised the lightsaber above his head, and it blazed into a blue fury. The man and the lightsaber traced a deadly dance around the hall, twirling the beam around his chest and arms, and in an arcing throw below his legs.

Obi-Wan proceeded into even more acrobatics, making a flip onto a waist-height beam that curved around the edge of the room, and into a one-armed handstand. Another flip brought him standing up firmly on the edge of the beam next to Anakin, from which he leapt down, swinging his saber inches away…

It was too much. Anakin closed his eyes, instinctively afraid that the glowing lightsaber getting too close.

When he opened his eyes, his new teacher stood in front of him with no more ethereal blue glow. He had turned the lightsaber off

“I’m sorry. Anakin…look, you can consider that another demonstration. I won’t hurt you in here. You won’t get hurt in here. Never.” The tone was earnest. Obi-Wan looked like he had been hurt himself by Anakin’s fear. “In here it will always be practice. Only practice. Even if we’re sparring, I’ll make sure of that. Do you understand that?”

Anakin nodded. And to his surprise, he did believe it.

Day 43: Obligations (Vader)

***

“All cleared, sir”

The craft swooped in for a pinpoint landing. Darth Vader had been asked by the Emperor to rendevous with Moff Tarkin, and in fact to be especially amiable with his old friend since it might be seen as an affront that Palpatine could not himself be there.

It was several minutes before there was anyone in the docking bay to show him where he was supposed to go—an unprecedented situation. When someone did show up to show him where to go, it was not the Moff himself, or in fact any human at all, or a droid—it was a Mon Calamari. The being bowed slightly, but there was something familiar about its manner.

Vader had heard all about the suppression of that planet from Palpatine himself. The locals were protesting the Empire, clearly caring more about their own personal corner of space than the welfare of the entire Galaxy. Tarkin had supervised that operation himself.

He’d never been told about any slaves being taken, though. Although, why would he? In all likelihood, Palpatine himself did not know.

Another way this Moff was arrogant, he thought. Control is achieved only through the Dark Side. Anything else is a mere imitation.

Then Darth Vader followed the Calamari to the meeting with the Moff. As Palpatine had asked—as much as he disliked Tarkin, he was here for a reason, and he couldn’t just stop because of a personal dislike. That would be foolish.

Day 44: A Token Gesture (Obi-Wan, Vader, AU)

***

The Force was occasionally, perhaps even often as of late, perverse, Obi-Wan Kenobi mused darkly. The latest manifestation of this lay in front of him. As much as he wanted to sleep, meditate—fall into a shock coma, for all he cared—he had work to do. He had to find homes for the orphaned children of his padawan. And, what occupied his mind at this particular moment, he had to contact the government of Naboo for Padme’s funeral. They would want a state one.

Even in the pale moonlight, her look of despair was echoed in his own heart. It picked out, smoothly polished, white, and cared for, a single, small carving on a humble leather thong draped around her neck. He recognized that handiwork.

***

“All right, then, you’ve heard what I came to say. Take it,” the Jedi said, nearly spitting out the words, to the man in the suit. A piece of Japor snippet was in between them. “It’s yours, isn’t it?”

“You shouldn’t have come back, Obi-Wan.” Vader lunged forward and picked up the trinket, his lightsaber pointed toward the Jedi.

The Jedi stared back, unafraid. “I had to try to get through to you again. I didn’t ask for this, Anakin.”

The black form that was all that was left of Obi-Wan’s apprentice yelled back, a voice that was eerily both unfamiliar and unmistakable. “Don’t call me that!”

A muffled, hysterical cackle exited the Jedi’s lips. “I would be all too glad. I don’t want to think that you could be the same Anakin Skywalker I knew.” He raised his lightsaber into a defensive posture. “That’s the last thing I want to believe. But I had to try. I had to see if she was right.”He turned around.

“She was wrong.” And he lunged off the balcony, disappearing into the Coruscant night.

Darth Vader was left standing on the balcony, a white carving in his hand contrasting against the black of his armor. He wanted to crush the thing, obliterating memory, obliterating painful memory. But he could not. He was weak, weak as always. He had to learn to wipe out memory, wipe out worldly attachments. He could not afford to care anymore. That was weak like Kenobi, who risked himself by coming back (foolish), who could not even kill him when he was divested of his limbs and roasting alive. He would have welcomed death, then. Another weakness. Clearly the Jedi Order had not been able to teach him his full potential, he had always suspected they were holding him back. Palpatine would not waste his potential. The Sith would be different.

Day 45: Justifiable Ewok Paranoia (Han)

***

You know it’s the beginning of the end when Ewoks start making musical instruments out of Stormtrooper helmets, Han told himself. Better Stormtrooper helmets than using your skull as a drum, he conceded, but even for Stormies it was a bit morbid. Or maybe that was just the recent associations. They’re probably little furry bundles of cuddliness when you don’t stupidly get caught in one of their traps or try to take over their territotry. Or one of their friends’ territories. Heck, even a rival’s territory could probably get them riled up from what he’s seen this evening.

So you there, pouting with the sad look, I’m not sure what you’re looking at but it’s making me nervous. Ot maybe that’s the other hundred pair of big, hazel and brown eyes following my every movement. Yes, they apparently accepted me as ‘one of the tribe’, but that translation’s Threepio’s. They could just as easily have said ‘one of the triple-cream, ambulatory meat dumplings that we like to cook on weekends’ and he wouldn’t have known the difference.

Maybe Leia’s made friends with the little critters, I’m still not convinced and I’m in charge of this mission. I’d order a strategic retreat immediatelyt, but it would have to be into more Ewok territory if we did it now.

I also think I was warranted in being relieved that Luke had merely surrendered to the Imperials rather than go off my himself into the forest… his lightsaber hadn’t kept us from being captured the first time.

So, my Ewok friend here, really, I’m not paranoid. I’m just getting a little worked up about you staring at me again… yeah, like that. And sizing up my skull for an instrument. Ok? Good. Glad we understand each other.

Great. Hehe.

The title for Day 45 drew me in, Shrunken, and I'm glad it did, since this is a marvellous collection of drabbles/vignettes you've got here!

I especially loved this last one. So Han. silly Next time I go watch RotJ, I'm going to be watching very closely to see if Han does indeed look paranoid in that last scene. tongue

Day 46: Holodrama (Luke, pilots)

***

Luke hungrily returned from the cafeteria after endless sim sessions all morning with a pack of rainbow chips and a bottle of blue milk. There was time for an afternoon snack, but he’d have to eat it on the fly, as it were…

When he opened the door to the pilot’s lounge, though, everyone was there, and everyone was laughing. In fact, the act of opening the door quieted the place down a bit. Luke waited for an explanation. He had it when his eyes came upon the new holo set. That hadn’t been there earlier…

Hobbie put an arm around the back of the couch and looked at him sheepishly. “I thought it would cheer things up around here. Haven’t been able to watch a holodrama in ages…”

“You watch holodramas?” someone said, laughing. “I thought those were only for old ladies. Besides the impossible relationships, I mean, they’ll exploit anything… really, have you seen ‘Tears of Alderaan? You’d think they’d have more respect…’

“No, but apparently you have,” Hobbie quipped pointedly. There was no more laughing.

Luke just shook his head and sat down. “What are you watching?”

“Jarry Spacer,” Wedge answered from the corner. “It’s ‘My Father has an Anger Management Problem’ day… and they really mean it. It’s one of the more ordinary ones. Makes you glad you don’t have to deal with any of this stuff, you know?” Luke nodded.

“So, what are some of the unusual ones if this is so tame?,” Luke couldn’t help asking.

“Ah, I saw one once where the topic was “I only have one parent…”

Luke laughed. “Did you actually watch the show? Probably just talking about orphans…” Then shrugged and sat down.
