earlybird - I think Koria is part empath. She's very good at knowing what Tobias needs. happy And first they have to figure out where to go... mischief

Trika - We lub you too! hugs Glad that it's all ringing true for you.

Lily - Makes me think of that Ben Franklin quote about hanging together or hanging separately. tongue But I don't think they really mind being thrown together.

Chapter Eight: Boundaries

Tobias jerked awake as the engine began to slow out of hyperspace, frantically groping for his lightsaber. For a moment, he didn't know where he was or what was going on - just that he needed his lightsaber, that there was danger nearby. He scrambled over Koria, but by the time he'd gotten to his boots and lightsaber, the moment had passed. He was just disoriented and panicked from the surge of adrenaline.

Koria was startled awake by Tobias. "Wha..." She sat up wide-eyed and bumped her head against his. "Ouch!" She rubbed her head and glared at him sleepily.

"Sorry," he said, rubbing the bruise that would probably form on his forehead. "I thought..." He paused, shaking his head for a moment. "Well, I don't know what I thought, but it wasn't this. In any case, I think we're coming out of hyperspace."

She moaned as she put her hand over her eyes and plopped back down on the pillow. "Don't talk so loud." Before Tobias could say anything, she asked. "Is there any place we can set down so we can search for a tracking device?" She rubbed her eyes groggily. I haven't felt this bad since I drank too much at my uncle's wedding reception... and I haven't even had the pleasure of getting drunk!

"I don't know where you set the nav computer for," Tobias said in an exaggerated whisper. "I have no idea where we are, let alone if there's anywhere to land." He smiled when Koria threw the pillow at him.

She growled as she rose from the bed and stomped out of the room, not bothering to put on her boots as she went to the cockpit. She grumbled all the way there, repeating what he said under her breath in a mocking tone.

Tobias frowned in concern as he followed her. He remembered when she was an exchange student that she was always cheerful in the mornings. When he entered the cockpit, he noticed her hands shook as they tapped on the controls and as he thought about it, it seemed as though she was moving more slowly and cautiously than normal. He sat in the co-pilot's seat and gently took one of her hands. "Kor, are you alright?"

"Yeah, I'm fine." She answered gruffly. "Why is it so damned cold in here?" She pulled her hand away and rubbed her arms as she squinted at the display. She shook her head, unable to make heads or tails of it as small lights floated about in her vision.

Tobias grabbed the arm of her chair and pulled it around so she was facing him. "Koria..." He reached a hand out to steady her when she moaned and went pale. "What is it?"

"I..." She looked down at the hands folded in her lap. She spoke in a soft whisper. "After you went to sleep, I got up to get a glass of milk... then threw up." She bit her bottom lip as she placed a hand on her belly. She did not wish for him to worry, but she was more than a little worried herself for her baby. A tear formed in one eye as she looked up at him.

"Kor, we've got to get you to a healer. With everything that's happened..." he trailed off, giving her hand a squeeze. "We'll find someone, find out what's going on. We can find a city - not too big or small, then search the ship for a tracer later." Tobias then reached out and brushed away the tear. "We'll find a way to make it right," he added, his voice no louder than hers had been.

Koria fought to think clearly. "This will only take an hour, Tobias, perhaps two. What good is it if we get caught before we get to a healer? Palpatine wants me alive. I don't know why, but I think it has to do with..." She paused, looking down significantly her stomach. Her voice became cold as steel as she spoke, "I won't let him have Awin's baby! I'd rather die." Feeling dizzy, she put a hand to her forehead. "I need to lie down... and something to drink. I think I'm just dehydrated because of the vomiting. I'll be okay."

Tobias bit back the retort wondering what the point of avoiding capture was if she lost her baby - or worse. "Let's get you back to the bedroom then," he said, doubting it was really dehydration. He helped her, noticing that Koria was more than a little unsteady on her feet. After she lay down, he brought her some water, as well as a container from the small galley in case she needed to vomit that as well. The Jedi Master kept his concern from showing on his face as he sat in the chair next to the bed.

As she sipped the water, she reached out with her free hand to take his hand. Swallowing, she gazed up at him with a shaky smile. "Thank you, Tobias. I'm sorry for my behavior earlier." She bit her bottom lip, feeling the need to be held but did not want to ask because it was Awin whom she wanted to hold her. She removed her hand from his and looked down at her glass of water.

"No one can enjoy every morning," he replied. "Besides, it can't pleasant to wake up to a paranoid Jedi hopping around for no reason. If you like, I can stay for a little while, until you're sleeping. I was hoping to meditate some before we came into orbit, and I can do that here just as easily as anywhere else."

She nodded then frowned. "I think we should make another jump right now... somewhere not in the regular spacelanes, but where we can set down to get the tracer off us."

"The Outer Rim would probably be best - although that's a long way from here. We'd need to avoid the Jabiim system and Palpatine's homeworld in the Chommell system. Master Muln was on Acherin with a contingent of clones, so that's not safe either." Tobias scowled and slammed his fist against the arm of the chair. "If only I had that report Palpatine gave Anakin, I'd know where the Jedi were commanding clones across the galaxy!"

Koria's lips slowly turned up and her eyes sparkled mischievously as she quoted him, "Sometimes we have to just trust the Force."

"If you don't listen to me when I say it, does that mean I have to listen to you when you do?" Tobias grumbled. He drummed his fingers on the chair arm for a moment. "Maybe we're going about this the wrong way. Maybe we don't need to go to the edge of the Republic - maybe we should just find a place within it that it doesn't hold sway." Tobias's eyes were gleaming. Koria just raised her eyebrows and tipped her head slightly, indicating she was listening.

"Nar Shaddaa - the Smuggler's Moon. Where better to get lost than somewhere where no one else wants to be found either?"

Koria stared at him at first with a calculating expression. Then she had a fit of uncontrollable giggling in which she spilled her water as she clutched at her stomach.

Tobias reached over and snagged the glass from her. "What's so funny?" he asked, as he grabbed a towel from one of the cabinets in the small room. He handed it to her so she could dry herself and the bed covers off.

When she was finally able to stop giggling, and finished sopping up what she could of the moisture, she looked up at Tobias. "Oh, I just pictured us with me in my lekku," she pointed to the falsies she wore the previous night, "and you as my owner." She grinned as she wiggled her eyebrows suggestively, "Are you sure you don't have a subconscious desire to subjugate me?"

A red flush washed from the neck of his tunic all the way to the roots of his hair. "If I did," he said with stiff dignity, "I wouldn't any more." Tobias stood, pausing in the doorway just long enough to say, "I'm going to go reset the nav computer," before he disappeared.

When Tobias left, Koria giggled then it occurred to her that he might actually be upset by what she said. She reached out in the Force to try to read his mood. When she was not able to sense anything but his presence, she withdrew then curled up under the cover... the part that was dry. One tear rolled down on the pillow then was followed by others as she began to silently weep.

Tobias went into the cockpit, sliding into the captain's chair, his cheeks still burning from embarrassment. He took a moment, staring at the computer without seeing it, going back over the last few hours in his mind. He'd never considered his life to be exceptionally different from others he might have lived, but since the night before, Tobias had experienced a range of emotions that had tested him in ways he'd never expected - and found them to have overwhelmed and almost pulled him apart.

He ran a hand through his short hair, squeezing his eyes shut, still feeling vulnerable. Tobias knew that Koria had been kidding, but he'd found a very small grain of truth in her jest. His Jedi training screamed that his reliance on her was dangerous - he knew he'd already wandered away from the no attachment clause because he was sure that if something happened to her, the Jedi Master would find the nearest battalion of clones to wander into the middle of. That would be much easier than dealing with the loss of Koria and Anakin's betrayal - the destruction of the life he'd lived as long as he could remember. He didn't want to subjugate her - but he certainly wanted her, and what exactly his mind - his heart? - meant by that, Tobias knew his currently fragile state wouldn't stand examining.

Tobias suddenly became aware of Koria's distress. His head snapped up, and he sprinted the short distance back to the cabin, finding her huddled under the covers. "Koria?" he asked, hating the hesitancy in his voice. "Are you all right?"

She tried to stop crying, but the harder she tried the more pronounced her weeping became. "I'm sorry!" Her voice squeaked.

"Sorry? For what you said?" He crossed the room and perched on the arm of the chair. Tobias laughed, although there wasn't a lot of merriment in the sound. He didn't know what to tell her; the truth certainly didn't seem like a good option. He studied his hands, hoping for inspiration.

Koria turned over then sat up to look at him. She sniffled and wiped her tears, though a few more came. "Please don't be angry with me," her voice shook, "I... I can't stand..." she stopped as she broke down weeping more. She looked down as she closed her eyes, and Tobias could sense her struggle to control herself, but she was too tired and her hormone level was skyrocketed.

Moving to sit next to her, Tobias took her hands and rubbing her knuckles between his fingers. "I'm not angry with you, Koria," he said quietly. He felt her shudder with another sob and shook his head. "I just... I know you were kidding -- I mean, I would hope you wouldn't think..." He trailed off, his hands falling still. The Jedi Master gave a small shrug and said, "It's just - after everything..." He let go of her hands, making a small, frustrated gesture. Tobias couldn't find the words, but he wasn't about to lower his shields for her to find all the other emotions there.

As Tobias spoke, Koria's crying subsided. Her eyes looked sad even as she smiled and whispered. "I know you wouldn't." She reached out and took his hand. "It was a stupid joke. I was just trying to break the tension... after everything that's gone on, but... I know it made you uncomfortable. I am so very sorry for that... and also how crazy I'm acting. I can't think straight, my emotions are all over the place." She chuckled slightly. "I wouldn't blame you if you dumped me at the nearest port."

"I couldn't, even if I wanted to," he said, trying to coax a smile - a real smile - from her. "It's your ship."

"Well, actually..." she drew the vowels out as her smile met her eyes, "...it belongs to the Corellian government." Then her eyes went wide as she gasped. "That makes me a thief!" Her heart pounded hard in her chest.

"I'm assuming the Corellian government put it at your disposal," Tobias said. "Surely they saw that there might be a need for you to go more places than just Coruscant and Corellia. Knowing Corellia, they'll probably reject the new order Palpatine sets up." He withdrew his hand, suddenly realizing exactly what his presence on this ship meant. "You're in far more danger for harboring a fugitive," he added quietly. "You probably ought to leave me at the nearest port."

"I doubt that will put me in any less danger. Remember, even though you tried bluffing the clone trooper by making it look like you were going to kill me, they know I helped you escape." She shook her head. "We're in this together." Koria reached over and squeezed his hand then lay back against the headboard wearily. "Did you reset the nav computer? We need to make that jump to Nar Shaddaa." She fought to keep her eyes open as she spoke.

"No, I didn't make it that far before I came back in," Tobias said. "I'll go do that now, and then meditate. If you need anything, just yell."

Uh going to Nar Shadda, the smugglers moon. Is that a good choice?

Loved the interaction between Koria and Tobias.

Chapter 9: Exotic Talents

Tobias stood outside the ship in the hangar that had been assigned to them by what passed for the Nar Shaddaa government. He and Koria had been looking for a tracer ever since they'd landed and as far as he could tell, there was no tracer on the ship, which was fortunate. They'd been assigned a platform near one of the commercial districts, and the plan was to go find anything they thought they might need before selling the ship and finding another one.

Koria had donned her fake lekku again to go into the commercial district, which threw Tobias off every time he looked at her. A green leather headband masking the transition from her head to the lekku matched her jade eyes. She also was wearing skin-tight trousers that accentuated her curvy hips, a low-cut, sleeveless blouse that left her midriff bare, and high-healed boots that made her only an inch shorter than the Jedi Master. "I think one of the things we need is a large supply of hair dye." Koria commented.

Tobias eyed her lekku warily, making a point not to look at the rest of her. "Why do I have the feeling it's not for you?" he said. He ran a hand over his scruffy jaw, having a sinking feeling as to where this discussion was headed. "If you make me dye my hair, I'm going to have to dye my beard too."

"Not if you shave it... but then you could also shave your head and we can save the credits for something else." Her eyes gleamed in amusement.

Rubbing his head absently, Tobias frowned. "You jest, but that might not be such a bad idea."

She tilted her head as she gazed up at him. "I suggest keeping the hair and just shaving. You'd be adorable as a redhead."

"I'd look like I was trying to be Obi-Wan - and failing," Tobias grumbled in return. "Either way, we should probably start heading towards the shops. Who knows how long it'll take us to find someone to buy your ship."

Koria agreed, and they started walking towards the shops. As they passed a restaurant with patrons eating at outdoor tables, a dish a waiter was placing before a rotund Twi'lek male caught her eye. "That looks good," she muttered, all but drooling.

Tobias raised an eyebrow. "The food or the gentleman about to eat it?"

"The waiter," Koria snapped back, still fixated on the platter, "no, the food." As they came closer, Tobias glanced up at the restaurant's sign, proclaiming its specialty.

"Do you realize that all they serve is raw meat?" Tobias asked, directing her attention to the sign and the nearby board reading the daily specials.

She barely paid attention as her stomach growled rather loudly. "Tobias, I'm starving. This is the first food in weeks I've found appetizing."

Tobias shrugged. "You're the vegetarian."

Koria looked up at Tobias. "I need to get and keep something down. I've lost fifteen pounds in the past month." She looked back at the diners... actually she ignored the diners, she was looking at the food. "I'm hungry!"

"Fine," he said, chuckling to himself. "It wouldn't do for you to waste away. What's the point of having your very own Twi'lek if she starves to death?"

Koria stifled a giggle as he led her to a table. Several minutes later, Tobias watched as the young senator scarfed down a plate of mystery meat. "Is it good?"

"Mhmm," she held out some of the dripping meat that had been marinated in some spicy sauce. "Try some."

Tobias shook his head delicately, not finding the meat very appealing. "I'll pass. I prefer to make sure my food is well and truly dead, unless I'm in dire straights." He watched as Koria inhaled the rest of the food in record time, impressed. "I guess we should add raw meat to our shopping list."

Blushing, she merely nodded. Now that she was satiated, she felt both embarrassed and appalled at how she had eaten meat, raw or not. Yet, she could not deny that she needed to be able to eat something that she didn't immediately regurgitate.

After Tobias paid the waiter, they reemerged on the street. "I wonder how you find someone who's willing to buy a ship," he commented absently, looking up and down the walkway. "I mean, it's not like there's a star cruiser dealership on every corner."

"Good question..." Koria shrugged. "Perhaps in the bars around the spaceport we could shmooze some of the spacers?"

"That usually involves alcohol," Tobias said with a grin. "I take it I'll do the drinking and you'll do the shmoozing?"

Koria assumed a scandalized expression. "What's happened to that respectable Master you used to be?" The corners of her mouth turned up into a smirk as her eyes twinkled.

---

Tobias sat at the bar, sipping a Corellian whisky as Koria hovered nearby, trying to play the part of love-slave convincingly. He considered joining one of the sabacc games in hopes that the conversation might direct him towards someone in the market for a Consular-class space cruiser. The Jedi was thankful it had never been painted red to indicate Koria's diplomatic status - that would have made the ship that much harder to sell. After some consideration, Tobias wondered if it might be easier to find someone selling a ship instead of trying to get rid of theirs first.

Soon, Tobias was sitting at a table with a green Twi'lek male, a skinny Balasar, and an overly large human who looked as if he had not bathed in his entire life... and smelled like it as well. Koria was unsettled by the way the Twi'lek was eyeing her, but did not let it show in her manner. Taking a cue from observing other love-slaves about the establishment, she put one arm over Tobias' shoulder and stroked his chest as she leaned down. She whispered in his ear, "Perhaps we can find someone who wants to trade a ship for our ship."

Tobias nuzzled up to her neck, keeping a wary eye on his cards and opponents, and whispered back, "I was thinking the same thing. It will probably be easier than finding someone with enough credits to pay for it."

As the dealer droid passed out the cards to the players, the human leaned over the Balasar, asking, "You're not from around here, ain'tcha? Those're fine clothes for the likes of here, mate."

The Balasar frowned, elbowing the human back into his seat. "Either shower once a month or keep out of my face, Divo!"

Tobias simply raised an eyebrow as he picked out two of his cards to place in the neutral field. "I decided to stop here on my way to somewhere else," Tobias said crisply, doing his best to sound bored, "like most other beings here. How about yourself?"

Koria nibbled on Tobias' earlobe. "You're well on your way to an idiot's array."

Tobias shied away a little, uncomfortable with how Koria's breath on his neck was beginning to tickle. He checked himself, knowing that he wasn't acting the part.

The Twi'lek narrowed his eyes at them as he flipped out one of his cards into the neutral field, but said nothing.

When Tobias pulled away just slightly, Koria noticed the Twi'lek's reaction. She smiled slightly to give the impression that this was a game her master played with her many times. She ran her fingers through Tobias' hair as she leaned forward so that her breasts pressed against the back of his head. As her other hand rested against his shoulder, she felt a pleasant warmth as he touched the back of her knuckles. She found herself enjoying the contact with him. Koria pushed away the guilt she felt about the stirring up of amorous feelings, because she knew the Twi'lek was watching carefully. Instinct told her this guy was dangerously perceptive... and dangerous in other ways. So, she concentrated on Tobias, turning her hand around to lightly tickle his palm before twining her fingers in his. There's time to analyze this later, right now we have to focus on what we need to do. She gasped quietly in pleasure as his head shifted ever so slightly against her bosom, and her heart quickened its beat. Damn!

"From Nar Shaddaa, meself," Divo replied.

Watching the Twi'lek, Tobias gently touched Koria's hand, which was resting on his shoulder. "Do you know of someone who might be in the market for a ship?" he asked, pretending to be more concerned about what Koria was doing than the response.

"A ship? Looking to sell or trade?" The Twi'lek spoke for the first time, sounding rather bored, as he threw out a negative twenty-three, much to the irritation of the rest of the table. All the cards were raked back in and another hand was dealt.

Tobias shrugged, leaning back against Koria and taking comfort in her presence. He wasn't very good at this - either the gambling or the subterfuge - and knew it. Even the Senate games seemed more straightforward. Where's Ieron when you need her? he thought with a pang of regret and sorrow. "Either, really. Sorting out our options," he added, favoring Koria with a small, and what he hoped was seductive, smile.

Koria's breath caught in her throat for just a moment as she caught his smile and her eyes met his. I'm supposed to be seducing you. She licked her lips in a suggestive manner as she leaned over to kiss his brow. Her fingers trembled slightly as she stroked his cheek. Why does this feel so right?

The Balasar grunted, casting a look towards Koria. "You might talk to Weni'wen. He's got the most connections - but you have to find him."

Tobias glanced back at Koria, realizing that for whatever reason the Balasar was reluctant to say more in front of her. With a sigh, Tobias pulled out a credit chip and handed it to Koria, feeling silly because it was her money. "Sweetling, will you go buy us a round of whisky?"

Once Koria had walked over to the bar, Divo leaned over. "Where did you pick her up? You don't find specimens like that much any more - though she's a little fat - for a slave, I mean. Probably ought to have her lay off the booze and sweets."

Tobias felt his face flush in anger and had to take a moment to calm himself. "I think she's fine," he replied stiffly. "As you were saying about this Weni'wen?"

"He's a trader," the Balasar said. When Tobias didn't immediately understand, the Balasar shook its head. "Slaves. You include yon piece with your ship, you'll be in. Though he's not exactly easy to find."

Meanwhile, as Koria walked toward the bar, a shaggy-looking man staggered over to her. "Hey, you're a beauty," he slurred his words as he put his arms around her waist, "I've got a hundred credits if you... OWOWOWOWOWOUCH!"

The young senator quickly slid out of his grasp as she grabbed his wrist, and twisted his arm behind him. Applying pressure, she hissed in his ear. "No one touches me but my master... got it?"

"Y-y-yeah, got it!" When he was released from her grip, he raised his hand as though to hit her, "Damned she-grakkt!"

Before he could deliver the blow, she quickly landed a back-spinning side kick to his diaphragm. As he doubled over in pain, forcefully expelling smelly air from his lungs, Koria brought her knee up into his face. As the man lay flat on his back, she placed the heel of her boot against his throat and barred her teeth. "And not even my master speaks to me like that!"

Tobias appeared at her side, looking down at the incapacitated man who sputtered, clearly expecting the Jedi Master to do something to fix the problem. "You should listen to her," he said, a smile on his face. "I don't like other people touching my things - and I've been told I'm far less gentle." Then Tobias escorted Koria back to the bar, filling her in as he waited for the drinks. "They recommended a being named Weni'wen - though he's a slaver. They insinuated that if you were part of the deal, we could get a better ship. Something doesn't seem right though. I think I'd rather find someone else."

Koria narrowed her eyes. "Did they by chance say this Weni'wen was hard to find?"

Tobias shrugged, "Yeah Kemin, the Balasar, did... why?"

"I'd lay down a stiff wager the Twi'lek is the trader. I agree, I don't trust him. But we shouldn't burn that bridge though. If we find no other alternative, we'll need to take that chance."

Tobias glanced back at the sabacc table. "I believe you're right about not burning bridges," he replied. "What makes you think he's Weni'wen?"

"It's a hunch based on several factors that're too complicated to say in a short amount of time." Koria had been looking towards the sabacc table as well, and when the three players looked their way, she quickly turned to Tobias and put a hand to his chest. She ran her hand up and down his torso as she caressed her lips along his jaw line.

The bartender then placed the drinks they ordered on the counter. Tobias smiled at Koria as she picked up the tray. "Careful, I might get used to this."

Koria paused a moment as he turned back and headed towards the table. "Yeah, that'd be a shame," she said quietly as she followed him.

Tobias sat down and gestured for Koria to distribute the whisky. "So, gentlebeings, how do I go about finding this Weni'wen?"

As she served the drinks, Divo's hand squeezed her firm backside with a lascivious grin. He was rewarded with the contents of one of the glasses splashing in his face. By the time he cleared the liquid enough to see, his own vibroblade was at his throat.

"You should learn from others’ mistakes, Divo."

"Ria'cor, desist!" Tobias ordered, using the name they had agreed they would use when she was in her Twi'lek persona.

"Yes, master," she deferred to him with a pout as she withdrew the vibroblade from the man's throat. She then pressed the appropriate button that would make the blade disappear back into the hilt before stashing it in her blouse, the hilt barely showing between her breasts. She looked defiantly at Divo, daring him to ask for his weapon to be returned to him.

Kemin cleared his throat as Koria returned to Tobias' side and the Jedi put his arm around her waist possessively. "She's quite spirited."

Tobias raised his eyebrows suggestively. "I prefer her that way," he said, a smile in his voice. "Makes it more of a challenge."

"Spirited is a very unique trait among slaves," the Twi'lek at the other end of the table commented. "Most have lost that spark - one way or another." The green being shot Koria an assessing look that was none too friendly. He pushed away from the table, revealing himself to be on the heavier side - clearly a successful being. He walked around the back of the table to stand beside Koria.

Tobias felt her stiffen beneath his touch, and he tightened his grip on her waist, willing her not to be defiant towards this being. He was clearly not someone to trifle with, and Tobias had the strong sense that if she pulled the vibroblade on him, they would both either be dead - or wish they were.

The Twi'lek gave her an appraising look that went from the top of her head to the toes of her boots. He then reached out and traced the line of her jaw starting at her chin, following it down the smooth arc of her neck and over the curve of one breast. His finger came to rest on the hilt of the vibroblade, and he looked into Koria's eyes for a long moment before turning his gaze down to Tobias.

"A pity she isn't an exotic color," he drawled. "You could write a ticket to anywhere in the galaxy."

Koria stood stock still, not daring to move. She squeezed Tobias' hand until her knuckles were white. The Twi'lek's large stature confirmed to her that this was indeed the trader they were looking for, and she instinctively knew if she took any aggressive action, she and Tobias very well could wind up as gutter trash. Even as she was repulsed by the Twi'lek's touch, she felt him slip something into her blouse. When his eyes met hers, she was not sure whether she should look away or stare back. As it was, she found herself staring into his cold black orbs, and her grip on Tobias' hand tightened. She felt her face flush at Tobias' answer to the Twi'lek's comment about her coloring.

"She has more than enough exotic talents to make up for that." Tobias rose and politely excused themselves, his arm still around her waist.

Koria was relieved when they left the cantina.

To be continued...

Someone get a video camera on me while I read this stuff! LOL. Every time Tobias or Koria made a "suggestive" move I tensed up, thinking maybe somebody would catch them or something "unnatural" would happen between the two and just give them both away. The bar scene was just classic. Thank you so much, you two. happy

Chapter Ten: Carded

As they walked down the street, Koria lead Tobias into an alleyway. Making sure no one was around, she pulled something out of her blouse. “Our Twi’lek friend left this.” She handed the card to Tobias.

She bit her bottom lip as she thought about how she had rather have had the Jedi touch her in the manner the Twi’lek had. This is very wrong! Awin hasn’t been dead a full month, and I’m already lusting for another man. No sooner had she thought that, then she heard her husband’s voice in her head as she remembered the last conversation they had before he had gone on the assignment that had ended his life.

“Be careful, Awin.” She had caressed his cheek.

“I will.” He took her hands in his as he looked intensely into her eyes. “Promise me something, Koria.”

“Anything.”

“When I die, find happiness wherever it presents itself.”

“Awin!” She gasped in shock at what he had said, and hugged him tight. “Don’t say things like that!”

Gently, he put his hands on her shoulders and pulled away. He cupped her chin in his hands as his ice-blue eyes locked upon hers. “I mean it Kor, after I die, and you find someone you can love, don’t hold back because of memories of me. I want you to be happy.”

Tears came to her eyes as she tried to pull away, but he caught her hands and held her. “Awin, don’t talk like this, please!”

“Koria, I need you to promise me this.”

“Ok, I promise,” she whispered as tears flowed down her cheeks and he held her.

Even as that memory faded, another memory from six years ago presented itself.

Koria stood out on the roof of the temple in the middle of the night. She perched on the ledge, overlooking the gleaming lights of Coruscant’s many buildings. Air traffic buzzed around like fireflies. At the time, she had felt the lowest she had in her life. Stave had been seriously injured because of something stupid she had done. Tobias had scolded her, and the disappointment in his eyes was unbearable to her. She had come up to the roof to be alone.

Awin came up beside her and stood there quietly for a few minutes before speaking quietly. “Stave will be okay. The healers know what they are doing.”

Koria had only nodded, not trusting her voice to speak.

“Tobias will forgive you.”

She fell to her knees and began weeping, and Awin knelt beside her, putting his arms around her. He held her as she wept into his shoulder, and ran his hand over her hair. He said nothing until she stopped crying. “You love him, don’t you?”

Koria pulled away and looked back out over the city lights. “Who?”

“Master Yoda, who else?”

The ridiculousness of the answer made her giggle in spite of herself, and she smacked him in the arm.

“Careful, I may bleed.” Then he got serious once more. “Master McCal… you love him.”

“It’s just a stupid school girl crush.”

She felt Awin’s eyes on her, and she sighed. “It doesn’t matter. He can’t love me back. He’s a Jedi.”

“He’s also a man.”

“But he’s a Jedi they don’t believe in emotional attachment, which means he won’t ever love me. So, it doesn’t matter.”

Awin took her hand and held it. “It matters to you.”

Awin knew she had truly loved Tobias. He knew even as he loved her, and wasn’t jealous. He quietly loved her and was her dearest friend, waiting patiently until she could return his love.

He also knew he was going to die. He was not force sensitive, but somehow he just knew his death was near. There could be no other reason he made her make that promise. Did you also know I would be reunited with Tobias like this?

She fought back tears as she watched Tobias study the card. “What does it say?”

Hearing the tone in her voice, Tobias gave her a questioning glance. When Koria shook her head slightly, he looked back at the card. "It's an old fashioned business card," he said, surprised. "You were right - Weni'wen must have been that Twi'lek." He flipped the card over, reading the back of it for a second time. "It has an address - I think it's outside the commercial district - and a message on the back."

Tobias handed her the card, reciting what had been written on it as Koria read it herself. "No slave - no deal." Koria's eyes lifted to look at Tobias.

He shrugged, looking uncomfortable. "What do you want to do?"

"Let's see, we could try another bar, see if we can get a better deal that doesn't require trading me in," she grinned a little in amusement as she spoke, hoping that would put Tobias at ease. "Or we could go along with this, and renege on the slave part of the deal... which could be really dangerous."

"He doesn't exactly seem like the 'forgive and forget' type," Tobias replied dryly. "I sense - something - about this, and it troubles me. But I can't tell if it's just because of everything or it's truly relevant to this situation." Tobias leaned his forehead against the heel of his hand, trying to focus. "How much do we have left if we decide to do more boozing and schmoozing?"

She giggled slightly, "Well, if it includes a game of sabacc, then we're in trouble unless we can justify a slave girl doing the playing."

Tobias smiled, although it didn't quite reach his eyes. "I think you were attracting enough attention as it is." He sighed and ran a hand through his hair, leaning back against the wall. "Well, if we go, Weni'wen's sure to have the whole place heavily guarded, so you would need your hold-out blaster - or something a little more impressive if we can find it. Or we start over at another bar."

Koria's face paled as she realized she did not have her blaster. "I dropped it when that clone trooper grabbed me... back in the service corridor in the Senate building." She blushed, feeling very stupid for having panicked and not picking it up before running.

Doing a rapid tally in his head, the number of credits was simply not large enough. They could either risk trying another bar or they could buy Koria a blaster, but not both. Neither of the options seemed great to Tobias, and he could tell by the look on Koria's face, she'd come to the same conclusion.

She bit her lip, feeling very much out of her element. She had made so many mistakes already, losing her blaster, drawing the vibroblade on the large thug in the cantina, and probably other things that she wasn't aware of that could potentially cost them their lives. She looked down at the ground as she said quietly, "Whatever you think is best."

"Well, we assume that Weni'wen has a ship that he'll trade. We don't have any guarantee that we'll find someone else by randomly picking a bar." Tobias stopped, reaching out to touch Koria on the arm. "Are you okay with this? It puts you in a lot more danger than me." Tobias tried to keep his face blank; he wasn't exactly comfortable putting her in this position, but the odds weren't great they'd find a better - or even another - opportunity. She's not your student any more, McCal, he chastised himself. Not yours to protect.

In spite of the many warning bells going off in her head, Koria could not see any way around going for the trade and double cross. Touched by Tobias' concern, she reached up and squeezed his hand. Taking a deep breath and expelling it slowly, she nodded. "I think it's the only choice we really have. This isn't like a mall or something where we can pick and choose our deals." She smiled shakily, trying to look brave, but knew he could see through it. "Let's go."

"Wait." Tobias grabbed her arm before she walked back out onto the street. With his other hand, he unclipped his lightsaber from where he'd had it hidden under his tunic and held it out to her. "You had training during the exchange program. Take this instead. You can at least reflect blaster bolts with it."

"Tobias..." she gasped in surprise, "I can't take your lightsaber! What if I lose it?" She shook her head as she added, "Besides, a couple months training with six years without practice hardly makes me capable of reflecting blaster bolts! There ought to be a used weapons dealer around here where we can get something cheap." The offer had touched her though, and that was when she knew she not only still loved him, but the feeling was stronger now than when she was his exchange student. She carefully shielded that, however, because right now that was a distraction they did not need.

Tobias put the lightsaber away. "I just don't have a good feeling about this."

"Really?" She feigned surprise as she ticked off various parts of the plan on her fingers, "Pretending to sell me into slavery, potentially walking into an ambush, double-crossing someone who's clearly powerful on this world." She shrugged with a grin, "Sounds like fun to me."

Then she placed a hand gently upon his cheek before leaning in to kiss him on the opposite cheek. "For luck. Let's go." She turned and went out onto the street, searching for a used arms dealer.

My thoughts, exactly. cool I'm excited to get more. You two did a wonderful job in the actual transition between Koria's memories and the "live" events. I sort of got this sudden shock back without forgetting where I was in the story. It worked really well and stuck with me during the last bits of the post. Great job. Again, I beg for more! Thanks for the update!

Chapter 11: Jedi Player

Less than an hour later, they walked out of a shabby looking building with Koria sporting a small blaster hidden inside her left boot. Tobias, still playing the role of slave master, put his arm around her and whispered in her ear. “I’ve an idea that may make this less dangerous. I go alone to Weni’wen, while you wait at a restaurant or motel.”

“But, it said, ‘no slave no deal’, on the card,” she quietly reminded him as she nuzzled his chin and rubbed his chest.

“Yes, but I’m sure he’s dealt with people that don’t trust him with the wares up front.” He blushed slightly as he spoke. It bothered him talking about her as nothing more than a piece of property.

Biting her bottom lip, she conceded, “I see your point.” She looked around and nodded towards a small restaurant. “I can wait there.”

They walked over to the establishment, and just when Tobias pulled away from her, Koria grabbed his hand and squeezed it. “Be careful.”

The Jedi Master gave her what he hoped was a reassuring smile. “You too, Ria’cor.” He did not know if any of the beings around them on the semi-crowded street were spies, so he played it safe by calling her by the cover name. He slipped a few credits into her hand so she could at least buy something to drink while he was gone. “I’ll be back soon.”

Koria watched as he walked down the street and turned the corner before she went into the restaurant.

---

Tobias stood in front of the warehouse door the address on the card had led him to. He flipped it over, reading the warning one last time before taking a deep breath to calm himself. This is your element, he thought. Using words to get what you need. He pushed open the door and walked into the dim interior.

Immediately, he felt his right arm grabbed by someone on that side and forced up between his shoulder blades. The air in his lungs escaped in a hiss, but Tobias didn't make any other noise and waited for his assailant to make the next move.

As his eyes adjusted, he saw the heavy Twi'lek making his way across the warehouse floor, moving through bands of light thrown by windows high up on the wall. "You didn't bring the girl," Weni'wen said slowly, coming to stop in front of Tobias.

The Jedi simply raised an eyebrow. "You blame me?" he asked. He looked around, as though he could see farther into the gloom than he could, reaching out with the Force. "You have - what? - at least ten others with you to protect you from me. I need some insurance you won't just take what you want and leave me with nothing."

Ben thrust his face into Tobias's, who could smell expensive tabac on his breath. "Well, at least you're not as provincial as you look," the Twi'lek said. He turned away, adding off-handedly, "Release him."

Tobias felt his shoulder creak as his arm was released. He rolled it before moving to match Weni'wen's pace. "So what do you have for me?"

Weni'wen turned to face Tobias, clearly not used to being spoken to so directly. "Doesn't work that way. You walk into my bar, sit at my sabacc table, saying you need a ship? It's what you have for me. You're only here by the grace of that specimen you brought with you into the bar."

Tobias didn't flinch as Ben leaned in to talk to him. He produced a small holo-projector from his pocket and activated it. Koria's ship, the Corellian Gem appeared before him, rotating slowly. "She's a Consular-class ship - well appointed and impeccably maintained."

Weni'wen studied the ship for a moment before asking, "Anything I should know about it?"

Tobias hesitated before replying, "She's stolen."

The Twi'lek laughed. "Aren't they all. From whom?"

Flipping the projector off and stashing it, he began walking slowly farther into the warehouse, pleased when Weni'wen matched his pace. "The Corellian government."

Giving a low whistle, Ben shook his head. "You're impressing me more each moment. I have a XS-800 that I think would suit you. She was also stolen, but we've scrubbed her ID codes and changed the engine signature so it won't be a problem. For your ship and the girl plus 5000 on the side."

Tobias looked at him. "With how badly you want her? Not a chance. The Consular is a better ship - and faster too. Even with the hassle of flipping it, you come out ahead without her."

"3500."

"Don't waste my time." Tobias turned to head back towards the door, the sound of his boots echoing hollowly in the empty warehouse.

"I'm not the one who needs to dump a hot ship."

"I'm not the one who let a hot piece of ass cloud my judgment," Tobias said as he paused to look back at the Twi'lek, hating himself even though Koria would never hear what he said.

Weni'wen considered. "I have a Starlight. It's smaller - but faster - and not as nice. Even trade, for your piece of ass and the Consular."

Tobias paused, waiting long enough to make the point that the Twi'lek wasn't the only one who could yank people around. "Deal."

"So, where are my goods?"

"The Gem is in berthing hold 4b." Tobias produced a data chip and tossed it to Weni'wen, slightly gratified when the other being fumbled it in his attempt to catch it. "Security codes are on that. Ria'cor is in a safe... or what passes for safe around these parts... place. You'll have her as soon as I see that the Starlight is in working order."

The Twi'lek stared intensely at Tobias, who only looked bored with the negotiations. "You are either very brave or the biggest nutcase who's ever landed on Nar Shaddaa." He chuckled. "Okay, she's in dock 21a. I warn you though, she won't get far if you double cross me." He walked over and handing Tobias his own data chip with the codes to the Starlight, as well as his personal comm channel to verify Koria's location once he'd checked out the ship.

After Tobias left, Weni'wen turned to look into the shadows. "Divo, take five men and follow him... discreetly... if he meets up with my hot piece of ass, create a distraction and take her. Alive."

The large human came out of the shadows and bowed. Five men of varying races followed him out of the warehouse.

Out on the street, Tobias whistled to himself, gently tossing and catching the data chip. Inwardly, he was wary - that had seemed far too easy. Instead of heading straight back to the restaurant, he wandered over to the docking bay, taking a look at the Starlight. It seemed like a serviceable ship, even if it wasn't much to look at. Everything inside checked out, and Tobias thought that, from the sound of it, the hyperdrive had even been upgraded from the original. Quickly changing the codes, he walked back through part of the commercial district, winding his way in and out of stores, debating whether he should contact Koria via the comm. He could sense something - but on a world like Nar Shaddaa, it was hard not to.

You're over-analyzing, he finally decided, angling back towards the restaurant. Around the corner from where Koria was waiting, he called the Twi'lek. "Your ship checks out," he said. "Ria'cor is waiting at the end of the berth where Gem is docked - the empty slot at the end of the hall, 28D." He clicked off, knowing they had little time in which to get off Nar Shaddaa before Ben had realized what they'd done.

Koria nursed a virgin choco-nut freeze from a glass that looked like it had not had a decent scrubbing since the day it was made. She sat in a back corner booth where she could keep an eye on the door yet be inconspicuous to anyone coming in. What's taking you so long, Tobias?

At that moment, she saw him push open the door to the bar, glancing around before spotting her. With a quick gesture, he summoned her over. Koria left her drink and the credit chip on the table before walking over to him. "We've got a ship," he said quietly, leading her out with his hand on the small of her back, "but we've got to go."

Even though she was relieved to see Tobias, the urgency of the situation filled her with dread. She followed him out the door and kept looking around nervously as they walked swiftly down the road. Perhaps I should have the pistol in my bra and the blade in my boot... too late to worry about that now.

Tobias took off down the street with long strides, and in her boots, Koria was having trouble keeping up. She watched as the back of Tobias's head swiveled back and forth, apparently looking for something. Koria focused mostly on keeping her head down and Tobias in front of her, keenly aware of what was going on in the Force. She could sense Tobias's apprehension as she noticed they were coming up on a large crowd.

On one side of the walkway, a holo-theater was letting out, with spurts of beings ambling out of the front doors, making small knots of pedestrians who were gathered in inconvenient locations. A bit farther down, Koria could see some kind of disturbance that was gathering the attention of many other beings, as well as some from the theater. Tobias was still making his way through the crowd, and it seemed to Koria that he must have been using the Force to make a path, because he was walking at a steady pace without having to dart around people.

She was not having as easy of a time, and Koria could feel panic starting to rise within her as people began to push against her as she came up to the crowd. Tobias's blond head bobbed in front of her, still within sight, but he was rapidly moving away from her. Koria considered calling out to him, but she was concerned about attracting attention to herself.

Once she got past the theater, she realized that the commotion had drawn a huge crowd of beings jockeying to see what was going on. She was knocked to the side by a grungy-looking human who didn't even turn around to apologize. Koria stumbled against someone else, suddenly realizing that in the process she'd lost Tobias.

Fear welled up within her, and the crowd made her claustrophobic. She began to push her way towards the fringe, paying no attention to whom she was shoving aside, when someone latched onto her arm. Koria turned, intending to yank her arm away, when she recognized Divo's face. He grinned fiendishly as Koria moved to pull away. It was then she felt someone grab her shoulder.
