she paused as she smiled sheepishly, "thank you for saving me from myself."
Tobias noticed that she wasn't putting her full weight on her right leg. "I think we can all use that from time to time."
Hmm.... like your belief in the no-attachment rule? That count?
Yes! They're going to help the Rebellion, all in different ways.
Ooh... I love that weapon. A sword- perfectly legal, though archiac. A lightsaber- instantly identifing and always useful.
"Maybe the Force is giving you a second chance, Master," Ieron said quietly. "Maybe that's why the Order was lost. It was too rigid – too dehumanized. Maybe it really is okay to live for another person – to find connection beyond that which exists in the Force. To love."
I agree.
I just want what's best for her, he thought to himself, the idea more an emotion than actual words. And I know it's not me.
Um... no. You're not considering anything. You're still reacting based on decades of training. Sit down, actually meditate, and think. You
are
the best thing for her.

earlybird:
Thanks, we're glad you like it.
Trika:
You're welcome. Do you want another ride?
Indy:
Ah, but it'll take Tobias awhile to unlearn a lifetime of training.
Chapter 19: Farewell
As they all sat around the dining room table, finishing off the last of the dinner, Stave looked around at his guests. “Is everyone ready for dessert?”
Tobias patted his stomach. “I don’t think I could eat another bite.”
As Stave stood, he grinned. “But you can’t pass
this
up,” he said over his shoulder as he went into the kitchen. A couple minutes later they heard him call out, “Taya, do you have the cam ready?”
“Yeah.”
“Ieron, could you dim the lights, please?”
“Sure, I
could.
” She smirked as she turned the switch to lower the lights.
“Will you?”
“Will I what?”
“Ieron!”
“
What?
”
The three ladies giggled as Tobias chuckled quietly and shook his head.
“So, what’s going on?” Koria asked in a hushed voice just before Stave came out of the kitchen holding a cake with twenty-two candles on it. “Oh my…” she gasped then blushed. “You guys didn’t have to do this!” Tears came to her eyes as they began clapping and singing.
“We gather ‘round and rejoice this day, ‘cause someone special was born on this day. Today we hope all your wishes come true, ‘cause Koria, this lifeday belongs to you!”
As their voices ended on the last words, Stave sat the cake before his friend. “Well, make a wish and blow out the candles already!” He exclaimed as she just sat there looking around at everyone.
“Alright already, bossy!” She giggled then closed her eyes for a few moments. She took a deep breath as she opened them once more then blew with all she had.
“By the gods, Tobias, you’d better move before the icing gets on you!” Ieron quipped.
Stave made quick work of the cake, slicing it and handing out four pieces before he sat down with one of his own. Ieron reached back to turn the lights back up before smiling at everyone at the table. Despite the thermal detonator Tobias had thrown earlier, the atmosphere seemed cheerful and cozy. She just hoped it remained that way.
Koria looked around at everyone as they laughed. She wanted to remember them all as they were now… happy. Her eyes had just met Tobias’ when she jumped in surprise as Stave tapped his wine glass with his fork.
When everyone turned their attention to him, Stave stood. “I know it’s no secret that I had a huge crush on Koria when we first met. I think it’s pretty obvious I still have feelings for her.” He looked at Koria then. “Kor, you are a great friend. You are like a sister to me.” He chuckled and shook his head. “Six years ago when you told me that you felt towards me like you would towards a younger brother if you had one, I felt like dying. Now I’m glad you didn’t reciprocate my feelings because Taya is my true love.” He looked briefly yet lovingly at Taya before continuing, “Now you are leaving, and I’m not sure if we’ll ever see each other again.” He paused to clear his throat as he raised his wine glass. “So, I make a toast. To Koria, I love you, sis.”
Koria listened in stunned silence. When he had finished speaking, she smiled shakily, “Gods, Stave, you’re going to make me cry again.” As though to prove the point, she wiped a tear from her cheek.
As Stave settled back in his seat, Ieron stood up, lifting her own glass. With a grin, she flourished it. "To the Little Diplomat, who turned out to give one of the most serious Jedi Council members a run for his credits on sheer audacity and single-mindedness. I admire your ability to cause trouble - for my exchange student, for my master, and even for me - and somehow masterfully find a way to work it out again." She gave Koria a broad wink and took a long drink from her glass.
When she sat down, an awkward silence fell over the table. Ieron watched as first Stave glanced at Tobias and then Koria. Taya looked from the other woman to the Jedi Master, when Tobias finally got to his feet, holding his wine glass between his hands. It took a moment for Ieron to realize she was holding her breath as Tobias began to speak in his customarily soft voice.
"When Master Yoda assigned me to run the exchange program, I didn't expect to take on a student. But sometimes, you're drawn into something you didn't expect, and from that you gain more than you ever hoped. Koria taught me about myself and my preconceived notions and challenged me more than anyone else I've ever met - present company included," he added, giving a humorous look to Ieron. He paused, shifting his glass into one hand before lifting it. "Thank you."
Koria had blushed a bright scarlet even as she grinned at Ieron. When Tobias stood, she found it hard to breathe normally. Tears flowed freely down her cheeks by the end of his speech. She gave him a trembling smile as she mouthed, “Thank you,” in response. She fought to compose herself, intending to stand and say something, and was surprised when Taya, who was sitting beside her, stood.
“I know we haven’t known each other long,” Taya spoke quietly, “but through Stave I feel like I’ve known you for years. I know when you first came I was jealous, but I’ve grown past that, thanks in no small part to you. In this short period of time, you’ve made me feel like a sister…” She chuckled as she looked at Stave, “…don’t worry, that doesn’t mean I look at you as a brother.” She turned back to Koria and raised her glass, “I will miss you, Kor. The Force be with you wherever you go and whatever you do.” She took a deep sip of the wine before she sat down.
Koria reached out and squeezed Taya’s hand in acknowledgement before standing. She looked down into her wineglass as she swiveled the liquid slowly. She then looked up and caught the gaze of each person around the table before speaking. “I wasn’t expecting any of this, but then, that’s life isn’t it? We make plans, go about our routines, and then [ i]bam[/i], something unforeseen rains from the clouds. Sometimes it’s something good, and sometimes it’s something devastating. It is the people you care about, whether you can be with them or not that ground you and help you endure the hard times. The influence of friends and family gives one the strength to laugh when you feel like crying, and even cry with laughter. I’m happy for this opportunity to tell each of you what you mean to me before I go.” She looked first at Taya. “I am overjoyed to have met you. I knew someday Stave would meet someone he would truly love and who would love him back. Take care of my baby brother.” She winked as a mischievous gleam sparked in her eyes. She didn’t need to look at Stave to know he’d blushed at the ‘baby brother’ remark.
“Stave,” she smiled fondly as her eyes caught his, “I don’t think I’ve ever told you how much in awe I was… and still am… of you. You are such an incredible genius. Until Ieron,” she briefly glanced over at the jedi with a grin, “kicked me in the butt… metaphorically speaking of course… and pointed out that you had a crush on me, I never would have thought someone as brilliant as you could like a ditsy lunatic such as me.” She paused for a moment before continuing, “It only seems like yesterday I met you. You were so shy, but look at you now. I’m so proud of you.”
Koria then turned to Ieron with a rueful smile on her face. “You intimidated me six years ago, though I refused to show it. It wasn’t anything you said or did. It was just who you were… Tobias’ Padawan, though you were and are a knight… and I loved Tobias. I was always afraid you would tell me, ‘Get out of here. How dare you look at my Master that way!’ You didn’t, of course. I am [ i]so glad[/i] that during these past few weeks we’ve had a chance to get to know each other better.”
Then Koria looked toward Tobias without making eye contact. “Tobias,” her voice was just above a whisper, “what can I say? Outside my family, you’ve had the biggest impact on my life. When I came to the temple as an exchange student, all I wanted was to learn everything I could about the Jedi. I also wanted to meet and thank the Knight and Padawan that had rescued my family when I was small. I… never thought I’d have my heart touched in a special way…” She laughed slightly. “Of course many of the other exchange students, and not just a few of the initiates, would claim I was touched in the head, and perhaps they were right to some degree… though not because I dared love you. You helped me grow… I would’ve never entered the political arena if it weren’t for you. I learned to think and act soberly… to think things through instead of behaving like a crazy laser brain.” She then looked into his eyes. “I loved you, Tobias. Then and now. I know you hold fast to the rule of no attachment, but I hope…” Koria’s voice broke and she took a few deep, shaky breaths as she looked up at the ceiling. When she looked back into his eyes, she continued, “I hope that in whatever dark times come, my love for you will pull you through. Whether you asked for it or not… accept it or not… part of my heart will
always
be with you.”
Koria raised her glass as she addressed everyone, “To dear friends who are with us in spirit if not in person, and watch over us.” She downed the rest of the wine then placed the glass on the table. “Excuse me, please,” she muttered before rushing out of the room. She wept as she ran to the refresher.
A few minutes later, she’d composed herself. As she came back out, she saw Ieron, Stave and Taya in the living room, trying to appear as though they weren’t waiting for her to come out. One corner of her mouth quirked in a lopsided grin. “I declare, Stave, if we all have to go at the same time, there must be something wrong with that wine of yours.”
Ieron raised her eyebrows. "Hutt dust," she said, with no small amount of satisfaction.
Stave raised his hands in the air. “I swear I didn’t spike it!”
All four chuckled then Koria sighed as she walked over to Stave and Taya. “It’s time I get going.” Taking both their hands in hers, she spoke softly, “Take care of each other, okay?”
“I have faith Tay will take care of me. She’s done a good job so far. Who’s going to take care of you?” Stave asked as the three hugged.
“I’ll just have to look out for myself.” Koria pulled away and turned towards Ieron who had come to stand near the trio. “Take care of him, will you?”
Ieron pulled her into a strong embrace. "When he'll let me. The goal is to use a Jedi mind trick and reset him, so he's like a normal person." She released the younger woman, searching her eyes for a moment. "He'll figure it out. And when he does, he'll come back to you."
“Thank you.” Even as she spoke, Koria sensed Tobias watching without knowing how she knew. She turned to look at him, feeling both shaky and shy. She turned her head briefly to watch as Ieron, Stave and Taya quickly left the room. She nodded silently to the knight when their eyes briefly met. Looking back at Tobias, she swallowed. She longed to embrace him, but found herself just standing there like a statue, mute and unmovable.
Tobias ran his tongue over his lips, glancing down at a scrap of fabric he had in his hands. He held it out to her, uncertain, before saying, "I want you to have this." Curious, Koria crossed the room and reached out, noticing that his fingers were cold. It was a piece of shimmer silk, brightly colored in pinks, oranges, reds, and yellows. She frowned, suddenly recognizing it from a head scarf she had had when she'd been an exchange student. It had been ripped in a smashball game the Knights had put together for the students and Padawans, and Koria had thrown it away. "I -- It would make me hope that things were going well for you when I saw it." Koria looked up to find him regarding her, his expression a little sad. "I wanted to give you [ i]something[/i] meaningful for your lifeday."
A lump formed in Koria's throat as she realized this scrap of cloth represented how much she meant to him. She was about to tease him about this showing of attachment, when a thought occurred to her.
He's giving it to me to sever the attachment! He's getting rid of me and everything that reminds him of me.
She crumpled the cloth in her fist as she looked up at him with a mixture of hurt and anger as she backed away. "I see. You really
mean
you no longer wish to be tied to me. I get it now. Fine. I won't hold you back any longer, Master Jedi!" She turned and walked swiftly over to where her backpack leaned against the couch. Shrugging it on, she headed to the front door. With her hand on the doorknob, she paused before saying in a bitter voice, "May the Force be with you... since that's the only attachment you want."
She swung the door open and ran out into the night.
Tobias blinked at where she'd stood a moment before, stunned into silence at the acrimony in her words. He swallowed, finding the motion caught somewhere in the back of his throat. The silence after Koria's outburst rang in his ears, and it was then replaced by the sound of rushing blood.
Ieron came into the room, having witnessed Koria's angry flight from the living room through the kitchen and on out into the yard. She stood near the doorway for a moment, aware that, although he was staring straight at her, her Master didn't see her at all.
"I -- I was just trying to show her..." He looked down at his hands, as though he could make the silk reappear in them, feel the silky coolness against his skin one more time.
"I know," Ieron said quietly.
Koria didn’t allow herself to think as she slowed her pace. Instead of staying with the winding road, she cut straight through the woods, heedless of the danger of the nighttime predators. She figured it would take at least three hours to walk to Thiropoli if she used the road, but cutting through the woods, she could cut the trek time in half.
That is if I don’t lose my way.
It was just over two hours when she reached the outskirts of the town. She was tired, and her knee complained a little, but she felt somehow free. Exercise always made her feel that way. She made her way to the small spaceport, keeping an eye out for anyone who would be watching her, suddenly very conscious of the fact that she wasn’t wearing her cloak to hide her conical ears.
Maybe no one will notice in the dark.
She stayed on the side roads which were only lit on one side instead of both sides like the main boulevards. “Hmph, I’ve only left Tobias a few hours ago and already I’ve gone to the dark side.” She muttered to herself as she entered the berth where the Starlight sat.
As she started the pre-flight checks, she kept thinking about Tobias, random images coming to her mind. She paused in the middle of the checks to take the small, silky cloth from her tunic pocket.
Gods, he didn’t give me this to hurt me… he was just reaching out, and I lashed out.
“Oh, Tobias, I’m so sorry!” She whispered. Then she noticed the comm had a recorded message. “Tobias?” She cursed at herself when she noticed how her fingers shook when her hand hesitated over the comm switch. Taking a deep breath, she tapped the button.
Ieron's face sprang into view, a serious but blank expression on her face. Koria suddenly became aware of the essence surrounding the Knight that would make her good at being an investigator - the other woman seemed to effuse confidence and assurance. She was not someone to be trifled with or someone to meet in a dark alley in this particular mood. "I hope you're happy," she said, her brows drawing together. Ieron glanced away, her attention attracted by something out of the range of the recorder before she looked back, her eyes dark. "That was his second most valuable thing he owns - only after his lightsaber. Maybe you should ask yourself why he's still dragging the damn thing around."
Ieron's face softened, melting into an impassive mask that made her look all the more threatening and unfamiliar to Koria. "I don't know what the hell you were trying to do - but well done. You were very effective." The message clicked off.
Koria sat in silence, staring at the space where Ieron’s face had been as though looking there would make it reappear and she could explain herself to the Jedi. “You can’t even explain yourself to yourself, laserbrain!” She caressed the small patch of cloth. “Tobias,” she whispered as a tear streaked down her cheek. She punched a few buttons to get Ieron on the comm, ignoring the tears that followed the first.
Stave's face appeared, and he looked concerned as he peered towards her, not quite looking at her as he focused on where her own image must be. "I wondered if we'd hear from you," he said.
"Stave... is Tobias there?" She didn't care that her voice was trembling. All she knew was that she had hurt the man she loved, and now needed to reach out to him. She remembered how he had held her and wept in her hair the first night they were on the Corellian Gem.
Oh gods, please let me talk to him! I can't leave him like this.
Koria could see his hesitation as he tilted his head, part of his expression lost in shadow and poor relaying of the signal. "Kor - he went for a walk. He seemed..." Stave trailed off, his shoulder lifting in a shrug. "He could hardly get the words out. I almost wondered if he wanted to say something else entirely."
“I’m coming back.” She said flatly.
“Koria, wait… Taya should already be close to town by now. Let me have her pick you up!”
She was about to say that wouldn’t be necessary, but as she shifted, she felt a stabbing pain in her knee. “Okay.”
“I’ll call you back in a moment to tell you when she’ll be there.”
That moment felt like hours as Koria worried at the cloth in her hand.
“She’ll be there in five minutes!”
“Okay, thanks Stave.” She shut off the connection and left the ship, telling R2N3 to lock up.
Koria found herself limping slowly through the spaceport, wanting to meet Taya at the main entrance. Once in the central lobby, she saw Stave’s girlfriend enter the doors. Just as she was going to walk over to her, a ruggedly handsome, dark haired man went over to talk to the petite red-head. Ducking behind a pole, Koria peeked around it to watch as the man showed a datapad to Taya and the young woman shook her head to say no.
Taya then came over, looking over her shoulder to make sure the man wasn’t watching her. “Do you know that man?” She asked Koria in a hushed voice.
“Not personally, but he’s a clone trooper.” She put her finger to her lips as the young woman gasped.
“Well, the good thing is, they’re still looking for you to be travelling in the Gem.”
“I have to leave! I can’t chance leading them to Stave. Tell them what’s going on.” Koria then handed Taya the piece of cloth. A tear came to her eyes as she said, “Give this to Tobias. Tell him I love him and am sorry for misunderstanding what he was trying to say.”
“Ok.” Taya gave her a quick hug. “Be careful, Kor.”
“I will.” She reached over and squeezed Taya’s hand. “Take care of Stave.”
“You know I will.”
Once Taya left, Koria peaked cautiously from around the pole. Seeing the clone talking to someone else with his back turned toward her, she rushed back to the Starlight.
When the Starlight was in hyperspace, she limped back to the sleeping cabin and lay down, hugging the pillow to her as she wept. It took several hours before she slept.
To be continued...

Now Koria is separated from Tobias. She should have stayed in Stave's house. Will she meet him again?
Eager waiting for more.
And wow what an update

I am not happy with you two right now. This ride was not fun, and I want off!
.

.
Awww... who am I kidding? I just want everything to be better in Tobias's and Koria's world.
Great update, you two. Excellent writing, as always, that leaves my heart aching and my mind musing on the possibilities. Thank you!

You shall have the answer to you question soon.
Trika_Kenobi:
Bear with us, our collective muses have seem to have a flare for the dramatic.
Chapter 20: Slicing and Detonating
“Tobias,” Koria moaned as she rolled under the sweat-drenched sheets. “No… Tobias!” She sat up with eyes wide and breathing heavily as she looked around. She lay back down with a groan. For the past week, she’d been having nightmares in which she either witnessed Tobias get shot down by clone troopers, or be tortured and executed by Darth Vader, whom she believed to be Anakin Skywalker, though she kept those suspicions to herself. The past three days, these nightmares came several times each sleep cycle, and she’d waken up more exhausted than when she’d gone to bed. Looking at the chronometer, she moaned once more and cursed under her breath as she kicked off the covers. “Might as well get up, Kor, the alarm’s gonna go off in ten minutes anyway,” she grumbled as she made her way into the shower.
When are you going to stop haunting me, Tobias?
She thought as she let the steamy hot water run over her. It had been just over ten months since she’d left the Jedi Master on Althir, and not a day had gone by she didn’t think about him and regret her words of anger. At first she kept reliving the last conversation she had with him in her dreams every sleep cycle, but those dreams had come less frequently over the next few months, even though the guilt remained just as strong. Still, every once in awhile she’d sense his gentle presence so strongly, that it felt like he was sitting or standing beside her. Her heart broke every time she turned around and he wasn’t there.
She was just finished with the shower and drying off when she heard the com chirp. “Well at least they waited until I was actually out of the shower.” She muttered as she wrapped the towel around herself and tapped the receive button, making sure it was on audio only. “Joiboi the Hutt’s Hut, you don’t behave, you will be slave.”
“Hey, Joiboi, you got some flesh for me?”
“What do you want, Jimi?”
“I thought I already asked for what I want.” At her silence, the Balosar sighed. “Okaaay… well, don’t forget, you started it.”
“Jimi…”
“Mo, Kat and I were wondering if you wanted to work on that new song you wrote. Iron out some kinks and perhaps debut it at the concert tonight?”
“It’s bad luck to rehearse the day of the concert, remember?”
“Okay, so we don’t have to debut it tonight, but we still need to work out those kinks.”
“Sure,” Koria shrugged. It was better than sulking alone in the hotel room. “Where shall we practice?”
“Kat and Mo share the suite with Dink, so their place is the best.”
“I’ll be there in ten.”
“Ten? Why so long, Kitten?”
“Jimi, I just woke up and took a shower. I need to get my face on.”
“Okay, but clothes are optional.”
Koria rolled her eyes as she hung up.
Late that night, the band had finished their gig and were relaxing backstage when Mo’s wrist com lit up. “Mo here.”
“Is the group secure?”
The five looked at each other wearily. It had been a successful yet tiring performance, and they felt they needed the down time. Koria tapped her necklace and nodded as they all got up to move into Mo’s dressing room. The piece of jewelry had been a gift from Stave when she had begun her political career. It doubled as an anti-bug device. The young genius had upgraded it when she was on Althir because he had developed some spy droids capable of breaking through her device’s defenses.
“What’s going on, boss?”
“First, team two and three finished their part of the mission without mishap.” Garm Bel Iblis paused as all five musicians sighed in relief. “However, we just got word that a Jedi was nabbed by the locals on the other side of the planet. I’m sending team three to extract him or her.”
Koria’s stomach knotted as she listened. She carefully schooled her expression and voice to seem casual. “Did the report say the name of this Jedi?”
“Only that he or she was human and blonde.”
Tobias!
Koria stood, and everyone stared at her as she exclaimed, “General, I have to be part of the rescue effort!”
The image of the Senator turned General blinked. “That’s not a good idea, Kitten.”
“General, please!”
“Mo, let Kit and I talk alone, please.”
The Devronian shrugged as he took off his wrist com and handed it to Koria.
When the four band members left the room, Iblis looked at Koria. “What’s this about, Kor?”
“It’s Tobias, I know it! I have to go to him.”
“Kor, he wasn’t the only blonde Jedi in the Order.”
“I
know
it’s him.”
“You’re too close to this, Kor. It’s too dangerous.”
“Garm, please, I have to do this.”
Her eyes met with those of his image. “Okay. It’s against my better judgment, but join team three at station F1 in forty.”
---
Tobias stood outside of the detention building, leaning against the wall of the adjacent building in the alley between the two. His face was hidden in the cowl of his hood, and he was watching the flow of people moving around. He'd been watching the comings and goings of the security force that managed the facility, and it was almost time for the evening shift change. The light was dying, casting long shadows on the square.
If the pattern that he'd observed held, the night guard who managed the front desk would go in and greet the afternoon guard. They would both come out for a smoke and, if the conversation was good, the night guard would accompany the other man to the edge of the building, bid him a good night, and amble back. Tobias thanked the Force for the low security – clearly. they hadn't realized yet what a Jedi was worth to Lord Vader.
The two guards came out, and from what Tobias could see, they were jocularly conversing with expansive gestures. He held his breath. Finally, the night guard clapped the other man on the shoulder, clearly congratulating him on something. They walked to the edge of the building, and night guard fumbled in his coat for something that he handed to the other man. Tobias darted around the edge of the building and moved swiftly. He slipped in the front of the detention building. With a wave of his hand, the Jedi Master slid the door open that divided the vestibule from the rest of the facility.
He pulled down the edge of his cowl, freeing his peripheral vision, revealing dark curling hair and a full, well-trimmed beard. Glancing in both directions, he reached out through the Force, sensing the multiple beings moving in the building as well as those in various states of waiting within the cells.
Ieron... Where are you?
Focused on her and trying to keep his concern for her out of the forefront of his mind, he rounded the corner to find a clone trooper talking quietly with two humans dressed in civilian clothes. All three pairs of eyes swiveled towards him, but the clone had the quickest reaction time; he drew his blaster and shouted a challenge.
Tobias immediately stepped backwards, trying to scramble back around the corner, but the clone had already fired off the shot. It caught him in the shoulder, and the rebound slammed him into the opposite wall, knocking the wind out of him. He blinked, eyes blurred from the pain. He felt his lips curl around the letter 'O,' but the sound never emerged from his lips.
Not good,
his mind finished, oddly detached from what had just happened as he slid to the floor.
---
Shortly after Tobias had gone into the detention building, the contents of a trash receptacle exploded from the top like a volcano with a loud woosh half a block from where the two guards were conversing. This was such an unusual site that both guards went to investigate. They failed to see five darkly clothed beings enter the building.
Once inside, two of the men stayed behind, one to hack into the computer to deactivate the alarms and see if he could find out where Tobias was being held. The other one stayed to watch the slicer’s back. The rest, including Koria, went in the same direction of the stranger who had entered the building just minutes before them. She gasped when they had come closer to the man and saw him lower his cowl. [ i]Tobias?[/i] Even with the dark hair and beard, she recognized him. Even as relief and joy filled her to see him alive and free, a warning went off in her head as she felt a sense of déjà vu from her dreams while she watched him round the corner. She passed the leader at a brisk pace, wanting to call out to him, but a large lump in her throat prevented it.
“Kor, wait!” The slender Corellian hissed.
She didn’t hear him. All her attention was up ahead of her. She screamed as she saw Tobias get hit by a blaster bolt and slam against the wall. “Tobias!”
Gil cursed under his breath as Koria ran down the hall. “Come on, let’s cover her!” He and Baromyr ran swiftly after her. Gil just passed her when they got to the cross corridor and he dived and rolled across the intersecting hall, shooting wildly as Baromyr shot from under cover of the corner. Kelna took position in front of Koria, firing rapidly and with deadly accuracy as she knelt beside the jedi master.
“Tobias,” Kor said anxiously as took his hand. Looking into his eyes, she was distressed to see his clouded expression. “Oh gods, Tobias, don’t die now!”
He blinked in confusion, wondering where in the galaxy Koria had come from. "Die? Did he shoot me again?" Tobias asked. He freed his right hand from Koria's grasp and reached to his other shoulder, feeling for the dampness of blood. It took him a moment to remember that blaster bolts cauterize wounds and, sure enough, when he examined his hand, it was clean. The sounds of blasters echoed in his head, both oddly amplified and muffled. He suddenly felt very hot, aware of his sweaty palms. The edges of his vision began to glimmer as the world slowly spun off its axis, tilting drunkenly. He tried to focus on Koria's face, but it was too much. He blacked out.
“Oh, no… Tobias, please!”
“Kor,” Gil put a hand on her shoulder. “I thought you said it was Tobias that was captured.”
“I thought it was… it must have been Ieron… she’s the only reason he’d be here.”
“Well, come on, we have to hurry.”
“I can’t leave Tobias like this!”
Gil ran his hands over his smooth head. “Ok, you guard him as we look for his friend.” He didn’t pause before he, Baromyr and Kelna ran down the corridor.
“Ieron,” Koria whispered, knowing he wouldn’t hear. She then turned toward Tobias. “Hold on, we’ll get you to safety soon.” She got an emergency field kit out of her backpack and proceeded to dress his wound.
---
Ieron could hear the commotion outside as doors slammed and voices echoed down the hallway. She lay on her bunk, one arm over her eyes even though the room was dark. It didn't seem worth it to get worked up over whatever was going on in the hall because she couldn't get out. The Jedi had combed the cell thoroughly when they'd first thrown her in but to no avail. As green and incompetent the local authorities seemed, the building was solid.
The yelling abruptly stopped, and silence fell over the hallway. Ieron opened her eyes, focusing on where the door would be if she could see that far in the dark. Reaching out into the Force, she could sense the other prisoners on either side of her, as well as three people in the hallway. An air of confusion seemed to surround them, which abruptly dissipated. They came to stop in front of her cell door.
"Stay back from the door!" one of them yelled. Ieron rolled her eyes, shifting both of her arms back to support her head. She could hear the rip of something then the dull resonation as they hit the door. About a minute later, a roar echoed through her cell, and the cell door hung drunkily in the doorway, only attached by its locking mechanism.
"You the Jedi?" A bald man peered into the room, his face obscured by the dust rising from the blast.
"Didn't you guys bring a slicer?" Ieron asked. She sat up, pointing at the locking mechanism. "It's controlled by a fingerprint scanner. Not too hard."
The bald man's face darkened as he frowned. "Look, are you with that Tobias guy or not? We don't exactly have all the time in the world."
"Tobias is here?" Ieron leaped off the bunk, brushing past the bald man to find two other men in the hallway. "Who the hell are you?"
"Question of the day. You first - payment for your freedom."
"Not here," Ieron replied. "Where's Tobias?"
Kelna was about to protest, but Gil shook his head, “Stow it, Kel, she’s right. He’s…” A chirping from his com unit interrupted him, and he slapped it in annoyance, “What?”
“I turned off not only the alarms but the surveillance system as well. We found where the jedi is being held…”
“We found her, good job. Be ready to leave as soon as we get back there.” The lithe Corellian led them back down the hall as he spoke. He glanced sideways at Ieron. “He’s been shot… doesn’t look good.”
Meanwhile Koria finished her ministrations, and with shaky fingers, caressed Tobias’ cheek. “Hang in there!”
His eyes fluttered open, although his skin was still an unpleasant shade of green. He squinted at her, still seeing stars and feeling warm, but the feeling was rapidly receding. He clutched at his shoulder, not taking his eyes away from her face, leaving a sweaty hand-print on his tunic. "If I'm hallucinating, tell them not to stop the meds," he said softly before curling up, protecting his shoulder.
Tears of relief fell down her cheeks as she laughed lightly. She gently embraced him and kissed his temple. “It’s real, I’m here, and everything’s gonna be alright.” She whispered.
And I’m
never
going to leave you again!
Kelna, Gil, and Baromyr reappeared, sprinting down the hallway, with a dirty, blond Ieron keeping pace behind. Out in the light, she looked worse for the wear, with a stained and torn tunic as well as a shiner appearing across her left cheekbone. The three men stopped a short distance from Tobias, but Ieron came up to kneel next to Koria. "Where was he shot?"
Having pulled away from Tobias when she heard the footsteps, and pulled her blaster, Koria was relieved to see her comrades and her face brightened as she saw Ieron. “In the shoulder.” She swallowed as she looked back at Tobias.
Gil seethed. He hadn’t missed the fact that Koria had been holding the Jedi in her arms instead of keeping watch for any more guards or clone troopers.
Now’s not the time for reprimands.
“Baromyr, you carry him,” he told the large Zabrak. “We have to get going now!” As Baromyr came over to lift Tobias and Koria shifted out of the way, Gil kept looking around, ready to shoot anything that moved.
Tobias shifted away from the Zabrak, pushing himself into a sitting position with his good arm. "I can walk," he said irritably. His color had returned, and, though he was still looking a little shaky, he got to his feet to prove his point. The Jedi wrapped his cloak tightly around himself with a defiant look on his face.
Ieron gave an approving nod to her master. "Hang on a second - we have to get your lightsaber. Where's your slicer? There's an armory room on the other side of this corridor - I saw it when they first brought me in for questioning." Ieron stood, looking at Gil then Kelna.
Gil pursed his lips as he tapped his com. “Tem, we need you to open the door to the armory.”
“I’m ahead of you, cap… it’s unlocked, all ya need to do is tap the access panel.”
One of the corners of Gil’s mouth turned up as he glanced at Ieron. “Good job, I’ll recommend you for a raise.” He cut off the com as he turned his attention to Baromyr and Koria. “You two help the jedi and go meet Tem and Brin. Kel, Ieron, with me.”
As Koria, Tobias and Baromyr came to the front, she noticed the guard that had taken over the current shift was lying on the floor just to the side of the door.
“Is that the Jedi?” Brin asked.
“
One
of them,” Baromyr grunted.
“He doesn’t look too well.” Tem commented.
“He’ll be fine!” Koria snapped in annoyance at how they were talking about Tobias as though he weren’t there. She looked up in concern at the Jedi as he followed in silence, face set in determination.
Tem nodded quietly just as they heard feet running down the corridor from which Koria and Baromyr came from. Brin and Koria both aimed their guns toward the archway then relaxed when they saw Gil, Kel and Ieron appear. They left just as the thermal detonator Kel had planted in the armory exploded.
Brin and Tem led the way back to the ship with the rest following in small groups, trying to avoid notice. Ieron was last, squinting at the natural light. She was trying to reckon exactly how many days she'd been inside the facility; as best as she could guess, it had been around two.
How did
they
know where we were?
she couldn't help but wonder.

And now Koria, don't let Tobias out of your sight again. Keep close to him and find a safe place for him and Ieron.
Loved the update

The lifeday celebration was wonderful. Similar to ours, but definetly belongings to the GFFA.
Oh, Tobias. I feel so sorry for him. He was just trying to show her how much he cared...
A musician?! Well, it's certainly different than being a politician. Best thing in hiding.
Oh, dear. Tobias was shot. Not good at all.
Baromyr- I have to say I first read this as Boromir.
Methinks rereading Lord of the Rings is messing with my brain.
But the people in charge of Koria aren't exactly happy with her- with reason, but she'll hopefully be able to get out of trouble with a good explanation.
Wonderful couple of updates!

I only put up what we already wrote together. Much of what everyone points out as being brilliant is
TMJ
's influence.
I just realized I forgot to change the subject bar at the beginning post!
Baromyr- I have to say I first read this as Boromir.

LOL I had Boromir on my mind when I made that character

Chapter Twenty-One: Debriefing
Koria longed to talk to Tobias alone, but when they rendezvoused with the Tandem Hawk, she was required to take part in the debriefing as he and Ieron were led to the med bay. She forced herself to listen as Gil reported everything that happened to Commander Bel Iblis. She kept quiet as Gil spoke about how she had broke away from them when she ran ahead towards Tobias, not missing the tension in the lieutenant’s voice even as her eyes met those of the general’s.
Commander Bel Iblis cleared his throat once the lieutenant finished. “Gil, when the meeting is over, I wish to speak with you and Koria about some finer parts of the mission.” When both affirmed their understanding, he turned his attention to the slicer. “Tem, anything to report on your end?”
“I recorded what I could on a data chit before crashing their whole system. I was also able to hide a virus in the back door that will infect any systems that communicate with the detention center once they try to reboot and get the computers up and running.”
“Nice,” Brin drawled. “Remind me never to cross you.”
“Good job. Congratulations on a successful mission, everyone. Meeting adjourned.”
Before Brin, Tem, Kelna and Baromyr could leave, Koria stood. “Before you go, there’s something I have to say to all of you.” She swallowed nervously even as she looked into their eyes. “I know my actions in the detention center endangered all your lives. I’m sorry I let my emotions get the better of me.”
It was Baromyr who broke the silence that had fallen at her announcement. Laying a hand on her shoulder, he gave her a rare smile. “I hope that Jedi knows what a lucky man he is.”
Koria blushed as she shakily returned his smile. “Thank you, Baromyr.”
He squeezed her shoulder before leaving the room. The others patted her shoulder as they nodded silently before filing out, except for Kelna, who patted the top of her head. “Nice Kitty,” he quipped as he rushed out of the room before she could smack him.
Koria covered her mouth to stifle a giggle as Gil hid his laughter by clearing his throat. They both sobered quickly at a stern look from Commander Bel Iblis who folded his arms in front of him with a frown. Koria looked down at the table between them.
“I guess you already know the seriousness of your actions.”
Koria nodded without looking up. “Yes, sir.”
“I was concerned about letting you go on this mission for this very reason.” The Commander’s face softened, and his voice became husky as he continued, “I don’t think any of us can blame you for your feelings, Kor. It is for the love and memories of those we care about that drive many of us,
but
we cannot let those feelings endanger the goals of our mission or put our comrades in more danger than they already are.”
Koria looked up at Commander Bel Iblis. “I’m sorry I let you down, sir. I won’t do it again.” She meant it. She had long looked up to the ex-senator to whom she had been an aide before he was nearly assassinated during the Clone Wars. He had recommended her as his representative in the Senate until he could resume his duties. When complications to his injuries set his recovery back indeterminately, the Corellian government gave her the full title of senator until elections could be held. She always suspected the setback… and assassination attempt… was one of Palpatine’s plots, but she couldn’t prove it.
“I’m sure you won’t. You never have in the past.” He squared his shoulders then. Koria understood that he wasn’t going to let their friendship interfere with military discipline. “However, I must put you on probation for one month. During that time, you will only be involved with the band, and you will have refresher duty when the band isn’t providing a cover concert for other team’s missions.”
Koria saluted him, “Yes, sir.”
“You’re dismissed.”
As Koria left the room and walked swiftly down the corridor, Gil came up behind her. “Kor, wait up.”
“What!” She stopped and turned. She immediately regretted her tone. “Sorry, I just need to um…” She stopped and blushed. She was sure he knew she wanted to go see Tobias.
“I understand, you know that.” He put a hand on her shoulder, and she relaxed. “I just wanted to make sure there are no hard feelings.”
Koria blinked in confusion. “What do you mean? Hard feelings for what?”
Gil chuckled as he removed his hand from her shoulder and ran his fingers over his head. “You know… for reporting you.”
“You were doing your job, Gil. Something I wasn’t doing down on the planet. Running ahead like I did could have cost me and others their lives… not to mention I wasn’t exactly
guarding
Tobias like you instructed.” She looked down at the floor as her face flushed a bright crimson.
“There’s a good chance if Talia were still alive, and showed up under similar circumstances as your Jedi, I’d have done exactly the same thing.”
“
Maybe
,” Koria conceded. “But then, perhaps not.” They both knew Gil was a disciplined soldier. Even though he loved Talia, he would most likely manage to stick to the mission even if it put his fiancée at risk.
He sighed and nodded. Taking her hand and squeezing it lightly, he whispered. “Go to him, Kor. Tell him what you couldn’t before.”
She squeezed back as she looked up at him. The two of them had come to be friends and confidants after they’d both had a free night and found each other drowning their sorrows in booze at a Corellian nightclub. They had danced together and gone to get a private room. Before things got too steamy however, Koria had murmured Tobias’ name at the exact same moment he had uttered Talia’s. They spent the rest of the night talking about the people they missed most and crying on each other’s shoulders.
“Thank you, Gil,” she whispered before heading to the med bay.
In one of the two examining rooms, Ieron was concentrating on balancing a tongue depressor on one end as the droid finished bandaging Tobias's arm. The bolt had caught the outside of his shoulder, injuring the deltoid and vaporizing part of the bone. Fortunately, according to the droid, the injury was fairly minor; he would have to keep bacta on it and keep it fairly immobilized for a couple weeks and bandaged for a month or so, but the muscle and bone should repair themselves. The droid bound his left arm to his body, admonishing the Jedi to keep it immobile. Tobias simply flexed his fingers, now close to his abdomen, out of view of the droid. Ieron raised her eyebrows, wondering when the full-scale rebellion would take place.
He slid down from the examining table and gave Ieron a look. "I think we need to find you some new clothes," he said fastidiously before adding, "as well as a fresher."
Ieron followed behind as they left the room. "Well, they offered to let me shower, but I decided that I'd rather engage in some biological warfare. That, and I wanted to savor the smell of the whisky that soaked into my shirt. I was saving
that
for later in case things got really bad."
They rounded the corner leading into the hallway when Tobias suddenly came to a stop. Ieron's reflexes allowed her to keep from running into him, but it was a near thing. When she peered over his shoulder, she saw Koria, frozen in the hallway, looking like a deer caught in the headlights of a speeder.
Koria bit her bottom lip, feeling suddenly very shy and nervous. A huge part of her wanted to rush over to Tobias and hug him and apologize to him over and over for what she had said to him when she’d left so many months before. She smiled uncertainly, “Hi.”
Smooth, Kor.
"Thank you and your friends for salvaging my rescue operation," he replied, one corner of his mouth tilting up. "I think I underestimated the difficultly of it."
Both corners of Koria’s mouth twitched as a mischievous twinkle glimmered in her eyes. “That’s what you get for being cocky.” It was what he had said to her when she was clobbered in the smashball game even as he had tenderly attended to her bruised eye… the same game in which her head scarf had torn.
He raised his eyebrows, an amused look on his face. "I wasn't trying to be cocky - I was trying to get her out, as it was my fault she was going to be turned over to the Imperials in the first place." Behind him, Koria saw as Ieron ducked her head for a moment, smothering laughter in a fit of feigned coughing and hiding a grin. All Koria heard, however, was the echo of her own response from six years ago:
I wasn't trying to be cocky - I was trying to earn some points, as it was my fault they scored on us.
Koria stifled a giggle then sobered as her eyes met his. “I missed you.” Her voice was just above a whisper.
"I missed you as well." Tobias' fingers on his left hand twitched in a gesture stifled by the tight bandages. Behind him, Ieron placed a hand on his back before moving around him to stand in front of Koria.
She stood in silence a moment, scrutinizing her, before giving her a soft smile. "It's good to see you again," Ieron said softly, looking into Koria's eyes unflinchingly, her head dipping in an almost imperceptible nod. She gently touched the younger woman’s shoulder as she moved past, murmuring something about finding a fresher that neither Koria nor Tobias heard.
As she shyly returned Ieron’s smile, a lump formed in Koria’s throat. She was relieved to see forgiveness in the older woman’s eyes. As Ieron left her and Tobias alone, she gazed once more into the Jedi Master’s eyes. “I’m sorry for what I said back on Althir when I left.” She looked down at the floor when she felt tears threatening.
Tobias lifted his right shoulder, his eyes dropping from her face to her hands, where her fingers were twisted together in front of her. He wanted to reach out, placing his hand over hers, and stop the movement, as well as the nervousness motivating it. "I know you didn't mean it," he replied, "especially after Taya gave it back to me." The Jedi Master exhaled, a small
whuff
that was audible in the quiet hall. There was so much he wanted to say, so many emotions to convey to her, but the words simply wouldn't come.
Koria took a step closer to him, wanting so much to embrace him, but settled on reaching out to take his hand. Just as she opened her mouth to speak however, Jimi came down the hallway.
“Hey, Kitten, ready for rehearsal tonight?” He came up beside the duo and nodded to Tobias absently.
“Yeah, I’ll be there.” She grated from between clenched teeth.
“Geesh, you don’t have to bite my head off!” He grinned at Tobias, “You must be the Jedi dude she was so keen on rescuing.”
Koria turned a bright shade of red as she let go of Tobias’ hand. The Jedi
dude
could see her knuckles lighten as she tightened them into fists.
Jimi was either oblivious to the anger flaring up in Koria, or he didn’t care. He put a hand out in a friendly manner towards Tobias. “I’m Jimi Slikfengerz, the string player for the Starskimmers. I’ve also earned the official title of Kitten’s general pain in the backside.” He shrugged as he added, “It’s the only way I could make the rank General.”
Koria rolled her eyes.
Tobias took his hand, a faint smile appearing as the corners of his mouth curled upward. "I'm guessing you're very good at that job, Jimi," he replied. "You ought to meet Ieron - the other Jedi who was rescued with me. She could give you some pointers - she's long since surpassed the rank of General."
Jimi’s eyes widened. “There’s a higher rank for that?” He grinned over at Koria. “I thought you said I was the biggest!”
“I’ll see you later, Jimi.” She said pointedly with eyes narrowed.
“Oh… where are you going?” He asked innocently.
“Jimi.”
“Yes?”
“Go away.”
The Balosar sketched an exaggerated bow. “Your wish is my command… for now, my lady.” He took her hand and kissed the back of it before rushing off.
“He seems a pleasant enough fellow.” Tobias's eyes gleamed with mirth.
Koria rolled her eyes once more then chuckled. “Truth to tell, I am a
little
fond of him. Not that I’d let him know. He’d be even more insufferable.” She then looked up at Tobias with a smirk. “So, Jedi
dude
, would you like some dinner?”
"I think that's a wonderful idea. Where's the galley on this ship?" He paused a moment, looking the direction where Jimi had left. "I'm guessing I'm going to being Jedi Dude for my duration here, aren't it?" Tobias gave an exaggerated sigh and wiggled his fingers by his side. "It's going to be very difficult to be dignified between that and this bandage."
Koria giggled as she took the elbow of his good arm and guided him to the galley. “Just a warning. Stay away from any green liquids. You’d definitely lose all dignity if you have to have your stomach pumped.”

Lovely update to see Koria and Tobias together.
And nice to see that Koria has found a new purpose in life, staying with the rebels.
and now Tobias becoming a rebel too?

I think there's a little LOTR geek in all of us.
I did the same thing!
Yeah, well, I'd just gotten done writing a 20,000 word LotR fanfic at that point, too.
“Nice,” Brin drawled. “Remind me never to cross you.”
“Good job. Congratulations on a successful mission, everyone. Meeting adjourned.”
It was Baromyr who broke the silence that had fallen at her announcement. Laying a hand on her shoulder, he gave her a rare smile. “I hope that Jedi knows what a lucky man he is.”
Awww.....
“However, I must put you on probation for one month. During that time, you will only be involved with the band, and you will have refresher duty when the band isn’t providing a cover concert for other team’s missions.”
Fair punishment.
Ieron raised her eyebrows, wondering when the full-scale rebellion would take place.
Very good question.
I love the interplay of present and past in their meeting.
