He didn't know when he'd passed out last. Hell, he wasn't sure he hadn't just died and gotten a healthy dose of electricity to keep his heart pumping for Vader's amusement. Either way, sometime after his so-called friend left to have a heart-to-heart with Lord Vader, Han woke up in a cold sweat to find he wasn't strapped to that machine any more.

There were pros and cons to that, of course. His back was killing him, of course, but that wasn't anything next to the rest of the stuff. He wanted badly to kiss Leia, just because his lips were pretty much the only thing on him that didn't hurt. And if she happened to hit any sore spots, it would still be worth the effort.

Instead, he had the galaxy's favorite sadist for company. Vader was looming again or maybe that was just the way he looked when he was trying to look passive and nonchalant.

He cracked open his mouth wide enough so he could growl a curse or an insult at the man, but instead, when he croaked out a sentence, it was something completely different.

"Where is she?"

For a long moment, Vader was silent. He wasn't sure exactly what the man was thinking. Maybe he was coming up with a plan or laughing so quietlike that not even that vocoder could pick it up. Maybe he was just wondering what the hell a smuggler was doing worrying about an Alderaanian Princess.

"Your Princess is unharmed."

"Yeah," Han snorted. "I remember how unharmed you left her last time."

He wanted to see the guy flinch, but that was about as likely as Jabba being a diet spokesHutt. At least he didn't say anything for a bit. Han wasn't really in the mood to talk, so he just lay back and waited for someone to get bored enough to torture him again. It wasn't really something to look forward to, but it meant that Vader wasn't doing anything to Leia.

Not personally, anyway.

"Why me this time?" Han asked casually. "Did you get bored with her?"

Vader's chin tilted towards the upper level of the room. "The Princess has her own concerns."

He didn't want to give his imagination time to catch up to his brain, so he kept talking. Maybe he'd get a real answer out of his warden this way.

"Yeah," Han sighed as if he were just enjoying a lum and a good, long ramble. "Well, if you think this is her idea of fun, you've never heard Alderaanian opera. Everything's about gods having bad days or tragic screechy women dying of Bothan flu. And they call it art. In Corellian, the word 'opera' means 'high-falutin' torture.' Probably it's nothing as bad as what you did to her, but I still don't get Her Worship's taste in music..."

"I assume that you are trying to invite more torture."

Han raised a hand and made a weak, gracious gesture as if he were holding court for his subjects instead of trying to distract a Dark Lord. "If you've got nothing better to do, sure."

"You have hardly reached the limit of your suffering," Vader said with an almost casual tone in his rumble.

"I bet you say that to everyone," Han muttered, squirming into a more comfortable position. "You going to tell me what you want or should we just try a few rounds of Twenty Questions?"

"You are a Rebel..."

"Now, now," Han interrupted. "Let's not get into name-calling. That's just not friendly."

"You have no information that would interest me," Vader replied flatly.

Now, that was just a flat-out lie. He had plenty of stuff that Vader would probably like to know about everything from the next base's coordinates to Leia's weak spots. He could even tell a few good stories ways they'd all outsmarted him over the years. But maybe that was just gloating and the timing was wrong for that sort of thing.

"Then get this over with," Han suggested. "I've got time."

Vader probably wasn't used to someone asking for the best he had. Call me crazy, but I think you're staring, Vader.

"You think this is the worst I've gotten?" Han challenged. "I didn't exactly have a regular place to grow up, so I just kinda fought my way through Coronet for a place to sleep. I usually won, but the guys who beat me at my own game had one thing going for them. They knew the difference between pain and suffering and made sure I learned the difference, too."

There it was again. Vader looked towards the second level and a jolt went through Han that had nothing to do with his tortured nerves. Vader didn't always know the difference between the two things, but Leia did. He had been there when they made her watch Alderaan die and maybe, just maybe...

"She's up there," he guessed breathlessly, immediately hating himself for sounding scared. "How long did you make her watch?"

"I let none of the soldiers touch her," Vader rumbled.

Which meant that no one had distracted her from watching what they'd done. Maybe, as a last wish, they'd let him get in one good punch to Lando's jaw for this...

"Take the Captain to his Wookiee friend," Vader instructed without saying anything more. "The Princess will join him in due time."

That phrase hit him hard in the stomach. Due time meant that now that Vader was done with him, he had nothing better to do than see what Leia's breaking points were.

"If you've been saving her for last..."

Vader turned away and left the room and Han worked him upward into a sitting position, wanting to let his fists doing the talking if anyone came anywhere near him. Instead, gravity took over and he slumped forward until the stormtroopers left behind caught him and started dragging him unceremoniously to wherever they'd left Chewie.

His ears were working perfectly, so he kept straining to hear if Leia was screaming or arguing or even crying. Giving any sign she was still alive and kicking. Instead, the city might have been a ghost town.

They dropped him as soon as he got through the cell door. Chewie hauled him upright as if he was a lazy cadet at the Academy. He blinked blearily and said the only thing that seemed to fit the truth.

"I feel terrible."

Awesome missing scene, Ish! Completely in-character for both Han and Vader. I chuckled at Han's comments about Alderaanian opera. "Well, if you think this is her idea of fun, you've never heard Alderaanian opera. Everything's about gods having bad days or tragic screechy women dying of Bothan flu. And they call it art. In Corellian, the word 'opera' means 'high-falutin' torture.' Probably it's nothing as bad as what you did to her, but I still don't get Her Worship's taste in music..." grin Excellent. So very Han.

"Take the Captain to his Wookiee friend," Vader instructed without saying anything more. "The Princess will join him in due time."

That phrase hit him hard in the stomach. Due time meant that now that Vader was done with him, he had nothing better to do than see what Leia's breaking points were.

Eeek. plain

Anyways, it's an excellent insight on what might have happened between the moment where we see Han being tortured and the moment when he's brought back to the cell.

Idrelle_Miocovani--Thanks, Idri! I'm glad it was in-character because my first reaction to the challenge was "Um, yeah, Han and Vader heart-to-heart. Not gonna happen." But I took it on and tried to make it work. If you remember "Four Hands to Two," the whole Alderaanian opera thing is something of a running joke in my characterization of Han. happy I liked the description of it, though. happy Glad that was very Han. Very eeek. Thanks for thinking it an excellent insight. happy

RK_Striker_JK_5--Thanks for finding it powerful. Han's always defiant, but it's fun to write him in that.

Nods......I could see this happening between Han and Vader. Also, in a weird way I had the feeling that they understood each other too. Like Luke, Han shares the capacity to accept evil and become it through Vader's influnce. For both guys friendship and love is what keeps them safe, and Leia is their touchstone for that strength. Unfortunately through Vader knows that as well and has no problem in using it against them. Vader might have tortured Han and Leia mainly to draw out Luke, but I think that he was also using those tortures to to weaken them for other reasons. After all, he wanted to take down Palpy, and he wasn't finding really good help in the Imperial troops. Here he had two capable leaders who were close to his son and could be used as hostages for each other and Luke. I think that Vader saw that even more clearly in the carbon freezing chamber. Add in the similarities to his relationship with Padme and the knowledge that such feelings could be used to twist a person I suspect that Vader began to scheme about future possibilities. After all, why waste a good oppourtunity! Many thanks for this vignette, I love it when writers flesh out the missing moments in a great movie! grin applause

I really liked this! You wrote Han and Vader perfectly. I loved seeing Han being all defiant in the face of the Dark Lord. Go Han! And all the time he's more concerned for Leia, awww. love This is a really nice little missing scene, and you wrote it really well. Loved Han's comments about the opera, too. applause
