Title: The Sand Angel
Author: Jaya Solo
Timeframe: Between RotS and ANH
Characters: Obi-Wan, Beru, Luke, Owen, and a few of Luke's friends
Genre: Short story
Summary: With the help of her guardian angel, Beru struggles to raise Luke.

“I still can't get him to take his bottle,” I quietly spoke over the comm unit.

“I'll be right over.”

“Thank you. Please get here quickly.”

I shuffled around nervously after shutting off the comm link. Luke had been living with us for two whole months, but in that time he had refused to take his bottle from me. Owen had no idea since he wasn't very fond of baby things. He said that was my business. I think he's a little afraid of who Luke could become, but every time I look down upon his tiny face, I can barely imagine how he can be related to that monster.

I discovered on the second day, after Owen had left “to get a tool” that Luke would stop crying long enough to take his bottle. The only problem was that he only stopped because of Obi-Wan's magic touch. Sadly, Owen won't have him come around because he's afraid of him finding us.

I remembered the first day Obi-Wan stumbled in out from the desert wind. Sand covered almost every inch of his body. He dusted off as much of it as he could before he took little Luke from me. After forty-eight hours of constant screaming, I declared Obi-Wan to be my sand angel.

Like chrono-work, Obi-Wan slipped in each day after Owen left to do his chores to feed Luke. I feel guilty hiding this secret affair from Owen, but Luke needs to eat. So I do what I must.

“Beru?” Obi-Wan called out from the front door.

“In here,” I shouted back over Luke's screams.

“Hello little one,” Obi-Wan softly said as he accepted the squiggling, screaming infant from my outstretched arms. He was starting to get heavy, so I was glad to let him go. “Are you giving your aunt a hard time again?” As he softly bounced Luke back and forth in his arms, the cries slowly began to subside. “There we go. Are you ready for your bottle?” Obi-Wan accepted the bottle that I provided him and presented it to the infant. Luke greedily sucked, quickly gobbling down the liquid.

“I don't know how you do it,” I moaned, as I collapsed into a chair. “He never takes it from me.” I paused, wondering if I should admit what I had been thinking for a few days. Those late nights provided a lot of time to think. “I think he misses her. I think he somehow knows what he's lost.”

Obi-Wan lifted his eyes from Luke to gaze at me. “That's a good observation. Infants can know when they're missing someone close to them, and they often resist feeding.”

I smiled as I wondered where he came up with his plethora of knowledge. “How do you know so much about babies?”

“As part of my training, I got to spend some time in the crèche. Most of the infants that we received were around six months old, but occasionally we got one that was younger than that. Those little ones were sometimes left without parents. Their Force sensitivity made them more aware that their parents were gone. They were the hardest to console.”

By then, Luke had finished his bottle and fallen asleep in his arms. That was my favorite part of the day, when Luke slept soundly in Obi-Wan's arms. It was an incredibly sweet moment, and it gave us enough time to make small talk. Sadly, the front door opened and the loud, clumsy footsteps made us freeze in our tracks.

With a hint of regret in his eyes, Obi-Wan handed Luke over to me before he wiggled his way out of Luke's window. I suppressed a giggle as I turned to go greet my husband.

Somehow I knew that Obi-Wan was gliding deftly across the desert to await my next call.

That was really sweet and yet sad. Poor Luke. Poor Beru - Obi-Wan knows more about babies than she does - but she'll learn.

“Luke's gone missing,” I frantically spoke into the comm unit.

“I'll be right there.”

I rung my hands as I paced my home. My thoughts were starting to get the best of me as I thought about my little boy. He was only six, and... He had located Owen's tool from under the sofa, and Owen overreacted. Luke shouldn't have known where the tool was, so Owen thought he was using the Force, like his father. He had yelled so loudly and so much that Luke had fled to his room to hide. Owen had declared that he would have to stay in his room for the rest of the day and miss dinner because of how he misbehaved.

When I went to serve him his dinner, unknown to Owen, of course, I found his room empty. In my shock I started screaming to Owen that Luke was gone. He had tried to comfort me, but I wasn't going to be consoled easily. We searched the homestead high and low, but the pit of my stomach told me that he wasn't here. Owen had called some friends and then gone out to look for Luke while leaving me alone to fret.

And fret I did. There were krayt dragons and Tuskan Raiders and the heat and no water... All things that could harm a little boy or worse. My thoughts went between worry and fury at Owen for yelling at Luke as he did. I was also upset at myself for not going to check on Luke sooner than I did. Luke didn't know any better. It wasn't his fault...

“Beru?” Obi-Wan's voice called out softly into the house, keeping the tears that threatened to fall held back once again. “I found him.”

“Oh thank the Force!” I exclaimed without thinking. If Owen had heard that thought...

“He had fallen asleep from the heat near a cave by my house. I suspect he may be a bit dehydrated. Give him small sips of water to help rehydrate him.”

I nodded before kissing my little one on the head. As I gathered the cup and water, I asked, “Why do you think he went toward your home of all places?”

“The Force sometimes guides us in ways we don't understand.”

“Don't say that. Owen wouldn't want to hear you say that.”

“Why did he run? That's not like Luke.” I could hear the curiosity brimming on accusation in Obi-Wan's voice. He too cared for Luke like a son.

“Owen blew up at him about something stupid.”

“He used the Force didn't he?”

“Yes. He found one of Owen's tools under a couch where he shouldn't have been able to find it. Owen won't say it, but he's afraid he'll turn out like his father.”

Obi-Wan sighed and furrowed his brow. I could tell he was thinking how stubborn Owen was without him saying anything. You didn't have to be around him for long to figure that out. “He's more like his mother than his father. I don't think there's much to worry about,” he said, trying to alleviate my fears.

“You still watch him?” I asked, intrigued.

“Yes. He has his mother's kind heart, but I'll admit, he's starting to get his father's adventurous spirit.”

“Do you think... that if Luke uses the Force too much... that he'll find him?” I asked in a barely audible voice.

“It's possible, but unlikely. We did not choose Tatooine by accident. Vader has many bad memories here, and it's unlikely that he'll want to step anywhere near here anytime soon. Vader thinks that Luke died with his mother. I think he's as safe as he can be.”

The loud voices announced the search party's return. Obi-Wan sighed and opened the nearest window. Over the years he had chosen bigger and bigger windows to slip out of. I politely chose not to say anything about it.

“Don't worry Beru, he'll be fine. I could help him control his powers...” I shook my head furiously at the offer. “Keep me informed if any other occurrences happen,” he said before slipping out the window.

I turned around, plastered a smile onto my face, and waited to give the good news to my husband of how I found Luke conveniently close to the homestead.

I knew that as I did so, that Obi-Wan was deftly moving across to his home again where he would await my next call.

“Luke hasn't returned yet, and it's after dark,” I whispered into the comm unit. I had to hide my call from Owen, so I spoke as softly as I could. “He went out on his speeder, and I fear he's been hurt. Owen's too stubborn to look for him, but I'm worried about him.”

“I'll find him.”

“Thank you Obi-Wan.”

Over the years, our calls had been fewer and farther between. I had had my hands full raising Luke and taking care of Owen. As Luke grew, so did the spirit of his father within him. He wanted to chase his dreams, and the place they led was to the stars. Owen wanted him to stay firmly grounded in the sinking sands of Tatooine. I tried to remain as neutral as possible, playing mediator to the two warring parties whenever I could.

Luke's reckless youth had taken him and his friends into the dangerous sport of racing. He raced his speeder, as if he was using a podracer of old, weaving in and out of the canyon walls. He had had several calls, and despite our protests, his races continued.

My worry was disturbed by a tapping at the door. My heart stopped as I realized it couldn't be Obi-Wan.

Obi-Wan never knocked.

I called Owen over before opening the door. Even though he was one of the most stubborn men alive, I couldn't answer the door without his arms to fall into.

Two of Luke's friends stood at the door, each scraped, bruised, and looking very sad and scared.

“There was an accident,” the first boy told me.

“Luke's hurt bad,” the second said.

“Why didn't you comm us!” I heard Owen yell.

“Our comms didn't work. We left Biggs with Luke. He's the only one with a blaster...”

“Well, where the hell did you leave him!” Owen yelled, cutting off the boy. “Beru stay here. You'll just get in the way!”

I winced at Owen's harsh words. I knew he loved me, but he didn't always show it with his words or actions. I was practically a second class citizen in this house. I almost glared at Owen as he and the boys pulled off in his landspeeder. I hoped that they would arrive before Luke bled to death somewhere in the desert.

I realized that I could keep myself busy and stop worrying as I collected supplies to bind up Luke's wounds. He would need bandages, and ointment, and...

“Beru! Quick, I need help!” Obi-Wan's voice called out from the doorway.

Overjoyed, I scurried over to Obi-Wan and nearly yanked Luke from his arms. I could be quite strong when I wanted to be. I helped settle him onto the sofa before turning to thank Obi-Wan. He looked tired and out of breath, as if he had just run a very long distance with a very heavy object. Luke was almost a full grown man by now, after all.

“Where's Biggs?” I asked, worried.

“I could move quicker by myself,” Obi-Wan huffed. “We need water to wash out his wounds. His speeder crashed but he managed to jump off just in time. The shrapnel did a number on him though.”

I winced. My poor little boy was badly hurt. I collected the supplies he needed while I watched him fish out small bits of metal from Luke's flesh. He washed and bandaged up the wounds even though they heard a loud, rickety noise alert them to Owen's return. Obi-Wan remained seated as he bound up another wound.

“Where is he!” Owen bellowed as he stormed into the house. I noticed that the boys did not return with Owem, and I surmised that they had run off to their homes rather than face Owen's anger. They would be in enough trouble of their own as it was.

Owen's eyes darkened when he saw Obi-Wan. “Get out,” he growled.

“Not until I've finished with Luke,” Obi-Wan calmly replied, standing his ground.

“Get out,” Owen repeated.

“No, he doesn't have to leave,” I said, speaking out against him for the first time in our marriage. “Let him tend to Luke first. He's seen combat. He knows what to do.”

“Beru...”

“No, I will not be quiet. Luke needs him right now. Let him be.”

I glared at Owen with all the icy fury that had accumulated within me over the past nineteen years. Owen finally backed down and made himself busy with housework while Obi-Wan continued to do his work.

“Treat the wounds three times a day. If they don't seem to be getting better within two days or they start oozing stuff, call a medic.”

I nodded and for the first time watched Obi-Wan exit through the front door rather than wiggle out of a window. I could see a bit of him wander out into the desert. This time his footsteps seemed slower and heavier. I too felt my heart be heavy with sorrow. I wondered when I would next call him for help.
