Title: The Past Revisited
Author: jedidas3
Timeframe: AU, between TPM and AOTC
Characters: Obi-Wan, Anakin, and others
Summary: Obi-Wan’s past resurfaces unexpectedly, interfering with his current mission.

Part 1

“Come on, Master. We’re going to be late!”

“If you were so worried about being late, you shouldn’t have insisted on tinkering with Garen’s speeder.”

“But I figured out what was wrong with it and Knight Muln was happy that I was able to amp it up even more and when we get back, he said I could take it out.”

Master Obi-Wan Kenobi shook his head. “I don’t know if I like the idea of you and Garen flying around the city of Coruscant together. Your overwhelming need for speed and his obsessive penchant for flying is not a good combination.”

“You could always go with us,” Anakin offered.

“I think I’ll pass.”

“Where’s your sense of adventure, Master?”

“It must have left me about five years ago,” Obi-Wan replied, a roguish glint in his eye.

Obi-Wan and Anakin walked up the ramp to board the transport that would carry them to their next destination. The Master and Padawan had only been back at the Temple for a day when they had been summoned by the Council to receive yet another mission. It seemed that there was another planetary dispute that had requested the Jedi to intervene and of course the Senate and the Council were more than willing to oblige them. Obi-Wan and Anakin had not been given much time to prepare and would have to do most of their research en route.

As Obi-Wan and Anakin situated themselves in their seats, the Jedi Master easily sensed his apprentice’s growing excitement. The young man always looked forward to their missions as much as the elder Jedi appreciated their down time at the Temple. Of course, Anakin had never claimed the Temple as home, despite Obi-Wan’s attempts to make the youth feel comfortable among the Jedi.

Obi-Wan had always considered the Temple to be his home, his refuge, even when he had left the Jedi Order for a period of time. He forced the memories of Melida-Daan back into the deep recesses of his mind. He had not reflected about that dark period of his life in a long time. Why would he think about it now?

“Master? Are you all right?”

The Jedi Master nodded as he came to focus on his concerned Padawan’ face. “My mind just wandered for a bit. I’m fine.”

“You better be careful, Master,” Anakin warned. “At your age, you shouldn’t let you mind wander too far. It may not come back.”

Obi-Wan playfully tugged at the young man’s braid. The Jedi had just turned thirty on their last mission and Anakin had taken great pleasure in tormenting his ‘old’ Master. However, in the end, the teen had honored the Master by presenting him with a holo picture of the two of them after the Master/Padawan lightsaber tournament. It had been an impromptu moment just after they had been declared the victors; both of them had smiles plastered on their faces and Obi-Wan’s arm was draped across Anakin’s shoulders.

He grinned at his young apprentice as he flipped Anakin’s braid behind the teen’s shoulder. “Don’t you worry about my mind, my young Padawan. My mind will always be one step ahead of yours.”

“Whatever you say Master. Now, when you say one step ahead, is that with or without the help of Master Yoda’s gimer stick?”

“Impudent brat," Obi-Wan smirked. “Well, since my mind is so feeble, perhaps you should study the information on this data pad. Be prepared to brief me within one hour of our arrival.”

“But Master,” Anakin started to protest.

“You better get started; it’s not a very long trip.”

“Long enough for you to find another way to make my life miserable.”

“It’s part of my duties as your Master to create new challenges for you. Surely, you don’t want me to be derelict in my duties?”

“No Master. I can assure you that you do your job very well.”

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” Anakin said. “Tell me Master, did your Master ever make you do mundane things like reading a mission file?”

An impish smile spread across Obi-Wan’s bearded face. “Of course not. I was a perfect Padawan. I never called my Master old—at least not to his face.”

Obi-Wan and Anakin listened as the ship’s captain announced that they had successfully entered hyperspace and would reach the planet Kulidan in approximately eight hours. The Jedi Master released his safety belt and Anakin followed his lead. Obi-Wan watched the young man and he stood and stretched.

“I guess I better get started,” Anakin surmised as he took the data pad from the Jedi Master.

“We’ve been assigned to Cabin number two. I’ll go and scrounge us up something to eat. I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I could eat another ration bar.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Anakin readily agreed.

The Jedi arched his eyebrow at Anakin’s extended hand.

“Just thought that you might need some help getting up,” the youth taunted.

“I’ll show you who needs help after our next sparring match.”

“Suit yourself, Mater,” Anakin replied, his own smile matching that of Obi-Wan’s.

Obi-Wan’s gaze followed the teen until he disappeared down the corridor. Pushing himself up out of his seat, the Jedi set out to find the galley, hoping he could find something to eat. As he started to search the small kitchen, he took a moment to consider the special moment that he and his apprentice had just shared. They usually had more days that they were at odds with each other, but lately, their relationship had taken a turn for the better. They were at ease with one another; neither of them having to prove anything to the other.

If only time would stand still. The Jedi Master wasn’t so foolish to believe that all their troubles were over. In fact, he had a feeling that they were just beginning. But in the meantime, they would live for and enjoy today. The words of Qui-Gon Jinn echoed in his mind as he recalled his Master’s lectures about living in the here and now. For now, he would do just that, even though for some unexplained reason, his past was trying to vie for his attention.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anakin Skywalker entered the darkened cabin and with a slight wave of his hand, he turned the lights on. He quickly scanned the area, noting that the room contained two cots, a desk, and a tiny closet in an even smaller refresher. Sensing nothing out of the ordinary, he took a moment to intently study the sparsely decorated room, realizing that this room was far better than most of the places he had lived as a young slave boy.
Pulling out a chair, he sat down at the desk to peruse the information pertaining to their latest mission. Anakin was finding it difficult to concentrate as the image of his Master’s weary eyes permeated his thoughts. The last few missions had been very trying on his Master and now the Council had sent them out again with no real opportunity to rest. Sometimes he didn’t understand the Council and he wasn’t sure that he wanted to.
Anakin recalled how eager he had been to get away, not considering that his Master may have liked to stay at the Temple for a while. The Council had not given them much of a choice. After sensing the bone weariness of his Master, Anakin promised himself to do everything in his power to make things easier for Obi-Wan this time around.
He also vowed that after this mission, he would not balk if Obi-Wan wanted to stay at the Temple for a while. He would willingly put aside his own desires if it would help his Master. Surely this time the Council would give them a respite.
Anakin turned his attention back to the data pad. So far it hadn’t seemed that different from some of the other disputes they had mediated. But as the youth continued to read, he couldn’t ignore the feeling that there was more to this mission than just a disagreement between two opposite factions.
He sighed in disgust as he realized that the information that they had been given was very scant. The only inhabitable part of Kulidan was the city of Ku’li and its outlying areas. There had been an uprising against the city dwellers by those who had lived in the outskirts. No details were given as to why they were fighting, which disturbed Anakin even further. The only other thing that was of any importance was the fact that he and Obi-Wan would be met by a representative from the city dwellers.
“Well, that was informative,” the teen sarcastically muttered.
“What was informative?” Obi-Wan asked the Padawan as he entered the cabin.
Anakin’s eyes followed Obi-Wan as the Jedi Master set a bowl of fruit down on the desk.
“They’re doing it again, Master. The Council is sending us in blind. There’s hardly any useful information on this thing,” Anakin said, tossing the data pad on the nearest cot.
“Ah, I see. I was actually hoping that I had missed something,” Obi-Wan remarked, picking up a muja fruit and biting into it.
“You knew?”
Anakin shook his head. He should have known that Obi-Wan would have already read the report. Although they had very little time to prepare for the mission, his Master would have made time to study what little information had been provided. The teen figured that while he was working on Garen’s speeder, Obi-Wan had been reviewing the files.
“I just sat here and read this for nothing?” A hint of a smile danced across the young man’s lips.
“Of course not. I wanted you to be prepared, my Padawan.”
“You could have just briefed me yourself.”
“Now what would be the fun in that? How could I pass up an opportunity to torment you with the boring task of reading a mission briefing that tells you absolutely nothing?” the Jedi Mater asked, a mischievous lilt to his cultured voice.
“I guess you couldn’t.”
Anakin watched his Master as he sat down on one of the cots. There was no doubt that the Jedi was worn out, even though he was trying to hide it. The youth could sense the fatigue not only in Obi-Wan’s body, but his mind as well.
“Is something wrong, Padawan?”
“You should have refused this mission. You’re exhausted,” Anakin stated.
“There was no one else to go. Don’t worry. I’ll request some down time when we return,” Obi-Wan affirmed.
“Master, I’m sure that the Council could have found someone else. You’re going to have to learn to tell them no.”
“You just don’t tell the Council no,” Obi-Wan gently argued.
“Qui-Gon did.”
Anakin immediately regretted the words as soon as they came out of his mouth. If Obi-Wan had been hurt by his words, he hid the fact well. The teen knew that even after five years that sometimes it was difficult for his Master to talk about Qui-Gon, and now the youth had gone and said something foolish and inconsiderate.
“I’m sorry, Master,” Anakin whispered. “I didn’t mean…”
“I know, Anakin. It’s all right,” Obi-Wan assured him. “You’re right. Qui-Gon was very good at telling them no. Perhaps I should be a little more like my old Master.”
“I think I would prefer you to be Obi-Wan Kenobi.”
“Thank you, Anakin.”
The youth still felt as if he had deeply wounded his Master and was amazed that Obi-Wan could simply dismiss the pain that he must have felt so easily. It was moments like this that made Anakin appreciate the fact that Obi-Wan was his Master and that this man was truly the only consistency in his life.
“Why don’t you lie down and rest awhile?” the young man suggested. “I think I’m going to go up to the cockpit and check out it out.”
“That sounds like a good idea. Wake me in a couple of hours,” the Jedi instructed.
“Yes, Master.”
Anakin rose from his seat and executed a perfect bow to his Master. As he headed towards the door, he glanced back over his shoulder as Obi-Wan stretched out on the cot and closed his eyes.
//Rest well, my Master.//
//Thank you, my Padawan.//
The teen stepped out into the corridor and let the door close behind him. He began to make his way towards the cockpit, his mind still focused on Obi-Wan. Anakin hoped that his Master would be able to sleep and that he would be slightly more refreshed when he awakened. The boy fought against the urge to call the Council and tell them that they were returning because Obi-Wan was sick, but he knew that Obi-Wan would not approve.
Anakin squared his shoulders as he entered the cockpit. He would take care of Obi-Wan. He just hoped that this mission would not be too much for his Master. The teen swore to protect his Master at all costs. His loyalty lay with his Master, not the Council, and not some mission that they probably had no business being on. Yes, he would be there for Obi-Wan, just as his Master had always been there for him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

He heard the sound of someone crying. It sounded like a child. Obi-Wan peered through the dense fog to see if he could see anything. As he slowly walked towards the sound, the Jedi began to make out the form of a young boy. His knees were drawn up to his chest and his arms were wrapped around his knees. Obi-Wan knelt down in front of the teen and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.

“Are you all right?” he quietly asked.

The Jedi Master fell back as the youth looked up. Obi-Wan came face to face with a likeness of his younger self. There was no mistaking the azure eyes and the cleft in the chin as they pleaded for a sympathetic ear from the Jedi Master. Obi-Wan cleared his throat as he fingered the Padawan braid beneath his fingers.

“What’s the matter, young one?”

“She’s dead and it’s my fault.”

“Who’s dead?” the Jedi Master prompted.

“Cerasi. I couldn’t save her.”

“Cerasi?”

Obi-Wan sat down on the damp ground beside the boy. What was happening? Was this a dream? He remembered the heartache of losing his friend. The Jedi recalled how lonely he had felt after her death. First he had turned his back on everything that had mattered to him and then he had lost Cerasi. He wanted to reach and comfort the teen and assure him that everything would be all right, but Obi-Wan couldn’t find the words.

His mind continued to reel as he watched the boy’s tears turn into choked sobs. On Melida-Daan, there had been no one to comfort him and to take his pain away. Obi-Wan settled for putting his arm around the boy, allowing him to lean on his shoulder.

It was then he heard another voice in the darkness. It was her! Even after all these years, he could still remember the sound of her voice. Cerasi! Apparently the younger version of himself did not hear the voice; he was still leaning against the Jedi Master. He didn’t want to leave the hurting boy, but he couldn’t quench the desire to know if the person he heard calling to him was actually Cerasi.

“Who’s there?” Obi-Wan anxiously inquired. “Show yourself.”

Out of the fog, a figure emerged and began to approach the boy and the Jedi Master. It was Cerasi! She was alive! Obi-Wan gently shook the teen and motioned towards the girl standing before them. They both stood to go and meet her when out of nowhere, shots rang out. Before his eyes, Cerasi fell as the weapons found their target.

“No!” Obi-Wan screamed as he ran towards the body of Cerasi. “Not again!”

Obi-Wan gathered Cerasi in her arms as the young boy began to back away from the sight.

“You killed her!” he exclaimed. “You killed her!”

The elder Jedi couldn’t answer, his own tears flowing freely. He could feel her life ebbing away and there was nothing he could do. Obi-Wan wasn’t sure he could live through the sorrow again. It was too much. As Cerasi took her last breath, the Jedi bowed his head as he whispered, “We don’t need luck…”

Obi-Wan sat up in bed, his heart racing as his breath came in short gasps. He felt something on his cheeks and reached up with his calloused hand, wiping the tears away. What was the matter with him? This was the second time that the event of Melida-Daan had intruded upon his thoughts. Was the Force trying to tell him something and if so, what did it have to do with their present mission?

He swung his feet over the side and brushed his hand through his long ginger locks. He had not had a dream like that in a long time. Obi-Wan had always been prone to visions, but had learned not to dwell on them. The last time he had a vision so daunting was before Qui-Gon was killed. He shook his head and pushed himself to his feet.

The Jedi went to the refresher and splashed some cold water on his face. As he was drying his face, the door opened and Anakin darted in, his face a mask of worry and concern for his Master. Obi-Wan turned to greet the youth, knowing that his apprentice must have sensed his distress.

“Are you all right?” Anakin wanted to know.

Obi-wan weakly smiled. “I’m fine, Anakin. I’m sorry that I disturbed you.”

“You didn’t disturb me, Master. You were upset, you were crying. That’s so unlike you.”

“It was just a dream and like I’ve told you before, dreams pass in time.”

“But Master,” Anakin protested, “this was different. I’ve never sensed such strong feelings of sadness from you, not since Master Qui-Gon died. You were hurting and there was no one there to help you.”

“You’re getting to be a bit too perceptive, my young Padawan. I was just dreaming about something that happened a long time ago. I’m not sure why, but as I said, it is in the past.”

“Will you tell me?”

“One day,” Obi-Wan promised. “But not right now. We have a mission to keep focused on.”

“Yes, Master,” Anakin obediently answered. “We’re almost ready to come out of hyperspace. The Captain is going to let me bring the ship out.”

“Oh great,” Obi-Wan ribbed the young man. “I better go and fasten myself in. It could get very bumpy.”

“Very funny. You know that I’m one of the best.”

Obi-Wan winked at the teen. “You would like to think so, wouldn’t you? Let’s go my young apprentice.”

The Jedi walked out to the passenger area and fastened himself in the seat as Anakin returned to the cockpit. The captain’s voice came over the comm unit and announced that they were coming out of hyperspace. In just a few seconds, the stars that were streaking by were now standing still. The transition had been smooth and he could sense the pleasure within his Padawan.

//See, Master? I told you that I could do it.//

//Oh, I didn’t doubt that you could do it, Padawan. I was just doubtful that we would remain in one piece.//

//Just for that, the Captain is allowing me to land.//

//He must not want his ship to remain in one piece.//

//Master…//

//Just kidding.//

Obi-Wan sensed Anakin’s concentration as he expertly piloted the transport through the atmosphere and performed an exemplary landing on the docking bay. He could just imagine the grin on the teen’s face as he sat in the pilot’s seat, admiring his handiwork.

//See, Master?//

The Jedi unfastened his seat belt and stood up, waiting for Anakin to join him.

“Nice job, Padawan,” praised the Jedi Master.

“Thank you, Master. I told you there was nothing to worry about. One of these days, you’re going to learn to listen to me.”

“Maybe so,” Obi-Wan replied, “but not today.”

After thanking their pilot for the safe voyage, Obi-Wan activated the ramp and he and Anakin left the ship, each looking for the representative that was supposed to meet them.

Their first impression of the area was that it didn’t seem that much different than Coruscant, only on a smaller scale. They could see the actual city in the distance as the tall, regal buildings rose into the sky. This did not look like a place in the midst of a civil war. As Obi-Wan scanned the area, his eyes came to rest on a young woman who was quickly approaching them.

He felt his heart leap into his throat as he now understood what the Force had been trying to tell him. It was impossible; she had died in his arms. But the fact remained that she now stood in front of him, very much alive. He couldn’t control the slight quiver in his voice as he uttered her name.

“Cerasi!”

I loved the banter in this. It really showed that the two of them were friends as well as Master/Apprentice. I can see that they seemed to be so comfortable with each other.

Good one, Kenobi. LOL.

Part 2

Cerasi was waiting to meet the Jedi representatives that had been sent to mediate the dispute between the city dwellers and the outlanders. She personally believed that the Jedi were wasting their time, but nevertheless, their presence had been requested by the governor of the city. It had been a long time since she had any kind of dealing with the Jedi, not since she was a young girl on Melida-Daan.

Cerasi’s thoughts drifted back to Obi-Wan. She had often wondered what happened to Obi-Wan. Did the Jedi take him back? Did his Master, Qui-Gon Jinn, take him back? By the time she had recovered, the young man had long since returned to the Temple. That was where Obi-Wan Kenobi belonged, among the stars.

There were many days that she had wanted to try and contact Obi-Wan and at least let him know that she was alive, but he had his own life to lead and had already given so much to a cause that he claimed for his own. It was a cause that had cost Obi-Wan everything he had. The last thing she had wanted to do was to cause him anymore heartache.

She pushed these thoughts to the back of her mind. There was too much at stake to be drawn into the past by ghosts that she should have buried long ago. Now it was her purpose to convince the Jedi representatives not to listen to the outlanders and their ridiculous demands. The Jedi were known to be fair, but in this war, there was no room for fairness, only justice.

Cerasi blew out a breath as the arrival of the transport carrying the Jedi was announced over the public communication unit. She quickly made her way to the platform to greet the Jedi. Perhaps she would ask them about Obi-Wan if an opportunity presented itself.

As she approached the two Jedi, her eyes became fixed on the older Jedi. It was him! It was Obi-Wan! He was older now, his hair was longer and he sported a beard, but his eyes hadn’t changed. Obi-Wan had eyes that could speak volumes even when he was silent. She’d never forget those eyes because they were the last sight she beheld before she died.

It was when he said her name that she knew without a doubt that this was indeed Obi-Wan Kenobi was standing in front of her. The soothing cultured tone that often calmed her fraying nerves during that tumultuous time on Melida/Daan was calling out to her. The only consolation that Cerasi had at the moment was the fact that Obi-Wan was as surprised as she was.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It had been a long time since Anakin had sensed such intense turmoil within his Master. Even the dream that Obi-Wan had earlier couldn’t begin to come close to the well of emotions erupting within the Jedi Master. Anakin immediately reached out to his mentor through their bond.
//Master, what’s wrong?//
Anakin’s concern waxed greater when Obi-Wan didn’t answer him. It wasn’t like his Master was intentionally ignoring him; it was almost as if the Jedi couldn’t find his voice or organize his own thoughts. He was afraid for his Master.
Then he heard Obi-Wan utter a name that he had never heard before.
“Cerasi!”
It was clear that his Master knew this woman. Why was she having this effect on Obi-Wan? The teen could feel the Jedi Master’s struggle to gain control over his jumbled emotions. Anakin studied the woman and had to admit that she was beautiful. However, Obi-Wan had never been one to be easily swayed by the appearance of a lovely woman.
The Padawan often enjoyed teasing his Master when he would walk by the female Knights and Padawans. Their eyes always seemed to follow his Master until he was out of sight. According to one of Anakin’s friends, his Master was ‘dreamy.’ He told his Master this and for weeks after that, Obi-Wan had started putting up his hood whenever he ventured out of their quarters.
Anakin was forced to lay aside these memories and focus on his Master. He stayed close to Obi-Wan as the Jedi took a slowly moved towards the woman. The teen felt uneasy around her, although he didn’t know why. Perhaps it was because of the effect that she was apparently having on his Master.
He could feel Obi-Wan’s continued efforts to rein in his rampant emotions, releasing his anxieties to the Force. Anakin reached out once again through their bond. He needed to know that his Master was all right.
//Master? Are you all right?//
//Yes, Anakin. I apologize for my lapse. I…//
//Who is she?//
//A ghost.//
//Master?//
//I’m sorry, Padawan. She is someone that I haven’t seen in a very long time and I never thought I would see her again.//
//Why not?//
The young man was beginning to wonder if Obi-Wan was going to answer his question. He wasn’t sure why his Master was so reluctant to answer, but the youth patiently waited. A few seconds later, he felt the Jedi brush his mind.
//She’s supposed to be dead. She died in my arms.//
Anakin stared at his Master in disbelief. This woman was supposed to be dead? It was no wonder that Obi-Wan was so disconcerted. The teen tried to consider how he would feel if their situations were reversed? How would he feel if someone he thought was dead was still among the living? He watched as Obi-Wan took another step towards Cerasi.
The youth saw the slight tremble in the Master’s hand as he reached up and lightly brushed her face with his fingertips.
“Is it you?” Obi-Wan asked.
“Yes,” Cerasi answered, tears forming in her eyes. “I can’t believe you’re here.”
“I could say the same to you.”
Anakin watched in amazement as Obi-Wan pulled the woman into his arms and hugged her. His Master wasn’t normally a demonstrative man with his affections, but those who were close to Obi-Wan always knew how he felt about them. There was no question that whoever this woman was had carved a special niche in the Jedi Master’s heart.
He felt as if he was intruding upon their reunion, but he couldn’t dismiss his earlier feeling about the woman. Something about this entire situation was forcing his heightened senses to stand guard. Until Anakin was sure of the woman’s intentions, he would not leave his Master alone.
His Master finally broke the embrace and took a step back. Now that Obi-Wan was over the initial shock, he wasn’t sure if the Jedi Master was happy or angry.
“How?” Obi-Wan wanted to know. “You died in my arms.”
“I’m not sure. The healer finally decided that somehow you channeled enough healing energy into me to keep me barely alive,” Cerasi explained.
“I couldn’t have done that. I was too young to even try anything like that. I mean a cut or something I could have easily healed, but you were mortally wounded,” the Jedi recalled.
“I know and I remember knowing that I was going to die, but I didn’t.”
“Obviously,” Anakin interjected.
The young man looked away from his Master’s silent reprimand. He inadvertently held his breath until Obi-Wan’s expression softened.
“Forgive me,” Obi-Wan said. “Cerasi, this is my Padawan, Anakin Skywalker.”
“You have a Padawan?” she asked incredulously.
“Yes. He’s been my Padawan for nearly five years ago.”
“I see. So, I guess the Jedi took you back.”
Anakin’s eyes widened in astonishment. What did this woman mean by the Jedi must have taken Obi-Wan back? Where had Obi-Wan gone? Did his Master do something to get kicked out of the Order? Surely not. This was Obi-Wan after all; he was the epitome of a perfect Jedi. It was evident by his Master’s hesitancy that the question had made the Jedi nervous.
“Uh, yes,” Obi-Wan hastily replied. “It seems that we have a great deal to catch upon.”
“Yes we do,” Cerasi agreed, seeming to take the hint that Obi-Wan did not want to discuss the matter at the moment. “Shall we adjourn to the governor’s palace? He’s expecting you.”
The Padawan stood aside as Obi-Wan motioned for Cerasi to lead the way. He fell into step just behind Obi-Wan, his proper place when they were on a mission. He thought it odd that his Master and Cerasi weren’t talking about the miracle of her apparent resurrection, but were discussing how to properly greet the governor, something that should have been in the initial report but was not.
Anakin knew that he would later get chastised for not paying attention, but he could not settle his mind. This mission was turning out to be one of the most memorable ones to date, even though it really had not begun. He had so many questions that warranted answers. Questions that he felt deserved answers.
The apprentice had often wondered what Obi-Wan was like as a child growing up in the Temple. Sometimes Master Tachi, Bant, or Garen would tell about Obi-Wan’s exploits, but none of them had ever mentioned anything about him doing something that would necessitate his dismissal from the Order. Anakin wished that he could simply pull Obi-Wan aside and start firing the barrage of questions that demanded an explanation. However, the young man knew that he couldn’t do that; it would not be appreciated or wise. He could envision himself spending the rest of his life in meditation for that infraction.
So engrossed in his own thoughts, he nearly bumped into his Master when he stopped in front of a large gate.
//Padawan, focus.//
//Sorry, Master.//
Anakin glanced behind him, realizing that it had been a very short walk from the landing platform to the entrance that would lead them to the governor’s palace. He watched with interest as Cerasi punched in an access code.
“At one time, the palace grounds was accessible to all the city dwellers. But after the attempt on the governor’s life, we had to upgrade security,” Cerasi remarked.
“There was an attempt on the governor’s life?” Obi-Wan asked.
“Yes. About a month ago. Thank goodness he wasn’t harmed.”
“Another piece of useful information that didn’t seem to be in the files,” Anakin muttered.
“I apologize for the vagueness, but we are a very private people and would prefer to live in peace. That is why you and your Master are here—to assure a peaceful ending to this bitter war.”
“I will take you to your rooms to give you a chance to freshen up. I will come in one hour and escort you to the feast that is being held in your honor,” she announced.
“All this lavishness is unnecessary,” Obi-Wan said.
Anakin had to fight the urge to roll his eyes. He never understood why Obi-Wan always discouraged the finer things in life. As Jedi, it wasn’t often that they had the opportunity to enjoy such pleasures. The Padawan believed that if it were up to his Master, they would be sleeping on the ground out under the stars. He had done that before and he quickly decided that he would always prefer the luxury of a nice warm bed.
“You wouldn’t want to insult the governor, Obi-Wan,” Cerasi gently warned.
“That’s right, Master. We wouldn’t want to hurt the governor’s feelings,” Anakin chimed in. “I mean the Council would be very upset with you if you did that.”
“I suppose you’re right, my young Padawan,” the Jedi stated.
“I bet he keeps you busy,” Cerasi grinned at his Master.
“You have no idea.”
Anakin once again followed his Master as Cerasi showed them their room. Opening the door, they entered into the room and looked around. It was unlike anything that either Jedi had ever seen. The room had been expertly decorated. The vibrant colors of the walls welcomed the two men as they made their way deeper into the room. The two beds against the far wall were lined with pillows sporadically placed on top of quilts that had been sewn by hand by some of the workers in the palace. There was a small table made from the trees of Endor with a variety of light refreshments on it and their glass door opened out on a balcony overlooking the city.
The youth sat his and Obi-Wan’s bags on one of the beds and fell back onto the sea of pillows. His Master was saying goodbye to Cerasi, so he decided that he would take advantage of the governor’s hospitality. He was tempted to let himself drift off for a few minutes, but he felt his Master’s presence coming towards him.
Sitting up, he watched as Obi-Wan walked over to the glass door. Opening it, the Jedi stepped out onto the balcony. Anakin joined him and tried to patiently wait for his Master to start talking. After several minutes of nothing but silence, Anakin finally gathered his courage to start asking Obi-Wan a few questions that had been gnawing at him.
“So, do you want to start from the beginning?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cerasi stood outside the governor’s office waiting to gain an audience with him. She still couldn’t believe that Obi-Wan Kenobi was the Jedi that had been sent to oversee the negotiations. The woman had truly not expected to ever see him again. She knew that he was right when he said that they had a lot to talk about.

The years had brought many changes for her and Obi-Wan, but here they were again, fighting another civil war. She couldn’t help but wonder what side the Jedi would end up fighting for. On Melida/Daan, they had fought side by side for peace and it wasn’t until everyone thought she was dead that an agreement reached. She had to convince him to fight for the city dwellers. He had helped her once; Obi-Wan would help her again.

The door opened and she entered the massive office. She bowed and waited to be acknowledged.

“You may rise,” Governor Bak’tol ordered. “So, tell me, did the Jedi arrive?”

“Yes, your Excellency. I believe that they will be easier to convince than we thought.”

“Why do you say that?”

“The Jedi Master is Obi-Wan Kenobi. He is a friend of mine from years ago.”

“Do you think that you can persuade him to fight for our cause?”

Cerasi smiled. “I did it once before. I’ll be able to do it again.”

That's the understatement of the year!

Hmmmm....I have a feeling "convincing" Obi-Wan to fight won't be as easy this time around. He is older and much wiser.

Great update

Poor Obi-Wan! He thought she was dead for all those years. And I have a feeling that this mission will either drive a rift in between Master and Padawan, or bring them closer together. I'm hoping for the latter. happy And, it seems to me that if those last few lines Cerasi said were being said by anyone else, they would be very sinister and ominous, but for what ever reason, it seems to me that she says them with no bad intentions. confused She honestly believes in what she's doing, and that she can convince Obi-Wan over to her side. And now that I think about it, the way things have been going, I have a feeling that the sympathies should/are going to lie with the people in the out-skirts, not the city dwellers. And I'm pretty sure that Obi-Wan won't be so easily convinced this time around, but there is that litte seed of doubt planted in the back of my mind... worried

And Obi, PLEASE for the sake of everyone, DON'T hide anything from Anakin!! praying

And could you pretty please add me to the PM list? I know I'm gonna like this story alot, and don't want to miss any of it. grin
