I like the way you write the differences between the two Jedi.

Obi-Wan so calm and collected and keeping it all together and then there is Anakin
who can just barely hold his anger and resentment in.
At least he feels for his master, and I like their banter.

Even though he is deathly sick he still imparts his wisdom on Anakin.

Congrats on your noms, well deserved for wonderful writing. applause

Governor Bak’tol was standing in front of their door.

And he'd better be holding the antidote in his hand!

I'm a bit surprised he had the courage to face Obi after what he's done...

I love seeing Anakin making such a fuss over his master

love love

Great update

I continue to love your Anakin! He and Obi-Wan still have that wonderful bantering relationship from the movies, but Anakin shows more understanding and seems to actually listen to Obi-Wan!

The moment with the little girl was perfect! Obi-Wan would definitely take the time to reassure her and give her a purpose even in the midst of such dire circumstances and with time so short.

And next, Bant to the rescue! (I hope...Now I feel the need to remind the kind author that Obi-Wan must survive in the end. Just in case she forgot.) grin

“He’s going to meet with the Outlanders,” Anakin repeated. “There’s no talking him out of it.”

“I know. He’s stubborn as a gundark,” Bant agreed. “I’ve received the sample. I’ll get this analyzed and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.”

“All right, but please hurry. I don’t know how long…”

“I know,” she gently replied. “Keep an eye on him.”

“I will,” the youth promised. “I won’t let him out of my sight again.”

“Anakin, this wasn’t your fault,” Bant assured him.

“I know, but still…”

“No buts…Obi doesn’t need your regrets. He needs your strength.”

How true! And Obi has discovered the cure! dancing

Yes, I got behind. blush

“I’ll be fine, especially with your help.”

“You’ve got it and not just from me. You’ve got a lot of friends, Master.”

“Yes, I do, but I only have one Padawan.” A tiny smirk crept across the Jedi’s bearded face. “Thank the Force.”

Anakin rolled his eyes. “Come on, Master. Let’s not keep everybody waiting.”

Wonderful! applause

I hope Garen and Bant get there soon; I think our boys need some help.

Great continuation of the story! Your banter between the two Jedi is fantastic, I love it!

jedidas3 posted:
Anakin sensed his Master’s pain at discovering that Cerasi had been involved in the act of trying to exterminate the Outlanders. He admired Obi-Wan’s strength. No one around the Jedi, with the exception of Anakin, knew of the Jedi’s distress; his Master’s stoic mask had remained firmly in place as he listened to Katal describe the plight of his people.

I love how you can make Obi-Wan so strong, yet so vulernable at the same time! Great job! Again...sorry for my delay.

Valairy_Scot: I think you have moved into one of the top spots for writing Obi-Ani! Wondeful!

And that little girl - wonder if she'll actually be able to help Bant?

blush Thank you, my friend. You are too kind. As for Nuli, I think you'll like her! By the way, congrats on your wins! applause

Part 8

For the second time in just as many days, Cerasi was standing on the landing platform waiting to greet two more Jedi. They had identified themselves as Knight Garen Muln and Healer Bant Eerin. She recalled that Obi-Wan fondly spoke of them during their time together on Melida/Daan. She sighed deeply. Melida/Daan was a lifetime ago. When had her life become so complicated?

Pulling her cloak around her, Cerasi took a step towards the two Jedi as they disembarked. She hoped that their added presence would not thwart the Governor’s plan. They had come to help an ailing Obi-Wan, but Cerasi knew that they would do so much more. It was her job to keep them focused on their friend, which shouldn’t be too difficult since the poison was already mercilessly raging through Obi-Wan’s body.

She sensed their scrutinizing gaze as she finally gathered the courage to meet their eyes with her own.

“Welcome to Kulidan, Knight Muln and Healer Eerin,” Cerasi began. “I’m sure that you are anxious to see Obi, I mean Master Kenobi.”

Cerasi felt uneasy under the continuous stare of the Mon Calamarian. She swallowed nervously, knowing the healer could sense her discomfort. “Is something wrong Healer Eerin?” she managed to ask.

“You’re the one,” Bant whispered. “You’re the reason that he stayed behind on Melida/Daan.”

“You know about Melida/Daan?”

“Yes. Although it was a long time before he could talk about what happened. His decision to stay cost him a great deal.”

“I’m aware of that,” Cerasi snapped. “But it was his decision. He felt as if he had a purpose; something that he had not apparently found with the Jedi.”

Cerasi never got to hear Bant’s response. Garen had stepped between them, placing a calming hand on the healer’s shoulder.

“We don’t have time for this now,” he gently reprimanded his friend. “Obi-Wan needs you.”

“But,” Bant protested.

“Time is wasting. I’m sure that Obi-Wan would be humbled by the fact that you’re prepared to defend his honor, but right now, that can wait. He needs you to save his life.”

“You’re right,” Bant reluctantly agreed with her friend.

“I always am.”

The good natured teasing between the two companions made Cerasi feel out of place. She envied their friendship and their camaraderie with Obi-Wan. Cerasi often found herself wondering if things had turned out differently, would her friendship with Obi-Wan have led to something more substantial.

Her private musings were interrupted by the dark-haired Jedi. “Can you take us to Obi-Wan?” Garen politely inquired.

“Of course,” Cerasi consented. “I’m not sure if he has returned yet. He and his Padawan left early this morning to journey to the outskirts. Obi-Wan was determined to speak to the Outlanders despite his declining health.”

The Knight grinned. “That sounds like him.”

“Perhaps you could tell me more about this virus that Obi-Wan has contracted,” Bant suggested.

“I’m sure that you’ve done your research,” Cerasi stated, hoping to dissuade the healer from asking too many questions.

“I have, but there is very little in our records about this virus,” the Calamarian tersely explained. “I figured that you would want to help Obi-Wan and tell me what I need to know.”

Cerasi tucked a stray piece of hair behind her ear. “I can tell you that it is a painful illness that is unrelenting to it victim. Anyone who contracts it usually ends up begging for death.”

“Are you sure that an antidote hasn’t been developed?”

Part of Cerasi wanted to tell the healer the truth about the antidote, but she could not bring herself to divulge that piece of information. The very existence of her people depended on the negotiations going in their favor and she could not sabotage that hope. “No, not yet. I’m sure that Healer Rylor would be better suited to answer your questions regarding the virus.”

“I’m sure that you will inform this Healer Rylor of our arrival.”

“He’s looking forward to meeting you. It isn’t often he gets to work with other healers, especially a Jedi.”

Cerasi said nothing else as the trio made their way towards the palace. She would be glad to be rid of these two Jedi. The woman couldn’t escape the feeling that they had seen through her deception. Had Obi-Wan recognized her façade as well? If he hadn’t, there was no doubt in her mind that his Padawan had already developed his own misgivings about her.

Opening the large palace doors, Cerasi motioned for the Jedi to enter. “I will take you to Healer Rylor.”

Bant shook her head. “No. Take us to Obi-Wan first. I want to do my own examination. Tell Healer Rylor to meet us in Obi-Wan’s room.”

“Of course,” Cerasi answered. “But, what if he isn’t there?”

“Then we’ll wait for him.”

Cerasi led them through the vast hallways towards the room that had been assigned to Obi-Wan and Anakin. She wasn’t sure if she was ready to face the Jedi Master, especially if Katal had told Obi-Wan the truth about the virus and the part she had played in spreading the dreaded disease. Her deceit would be revealed and there would be dire consequences to her relationship with Obi-Wan. Cerasi knew that she would destroy everything that she had ever shared with the Jedi Master, but that was a price that she was prepared to pay.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Obi-Wan forced himself to stand tall as he and Anakin approached Governor Bak’tol. The ruler was waiting for them upon their return from talking with the Outlanders. The Jedi wanted to do nothing more than to collapse into bed, but there was too much to be done. It was not his desire to expend what little energy he had managed to conserve on a verbal sparring match with the obviously irate Governor.
“Governor Bak’tol, to what do we owe the pleasure?”
The Jedi had gathered the Force around him in order to hide the fatigue that was plaguing his weakening body. His calm demeanor seemed to further agitate the Governor, which was exactly what he wanted to do.
“You went to talk to the Outlanders,” Bak’tol growled.
“I don’t believe that my intentions were kept hidden from you. I told you last night at dinner that I would be doing so.”
“So you did. However, I told you that it would be a waste of your time,” the Governor retorted.
“I think I should be the one to ascertain if something was a waste of my time, don’t you?”
“I would think with your deteriorating health that you would have other things to worry about.”
Obi-Wan’s eyes narrowed as a slight smile crept over his weary face. “You would think so, wouldn’t you? However, being a Jedi, I really don’t have that luxury. You see, a Jedi puts the needs of others first and his own needs last. Right now, there is much to be done, so I really don’t have time to give into this illness.”
“You can barely stand,” Bak’tol observed.
“Depends on your point of view,” Obi-Wan countered. “Personally, I think that I’m doing an exceptional job of remaining on my own two feet.”
“You Jedi are so sure of yourselves, aren’t you?”
“Most of the time. Now, if you’ll excuse me, Governor, I’ve had a long day and I wish to take time to freshen up. Dinner is still at the eighteenth hour, is it not?”
The Jedi Master felt the familiar nudge of Anakin as the teen called out to him through their bond.
//You’re really getting to him, Master. He’s angrier than Master Windu was that time you wrecked his speeder.//
//He’s does seem to be a little anxious, doesn’t he?//
//A little? Master, if looks could kill, you and I would both be dead.//
//Probably so. However if that were the case, you and I would have died a thousand times over.//
//You’re right about that.//
//It’s about time that you figured out that I’m usually right about most things.//
//Master, the effects of that virus is making you delusional.//
Obi-Wan didn’t have time to respond as Bak’tol roughly grabbed him by the arm. The Jedi Master looked at his arm and then at the Governor. His steady gaze never leaving the fiery glare of the ruler, Obi-Wan took his other hand and motioned for Anakin not to interfere.
“Is there something that you wish to say, Governor Bak’tol?” Obi-Wan asked.
“I want to know what Katal told you,” Bak’tol demanded.
The Jedi Master pulled his arm free and took a step back. “Why? What are you afraid of? Do you have something to hide?”
“No!” the Governor exclaimed. “I just…”
“Then you shouldn’t worry about what Katal said. If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about.”
“Katal is a liar and manipulates the truth to serve his own needs. Surely, you must have figured that out.”
Obi-Wan wasn’t sure how much longer his strength would last. He needed to end this conversation quickly so he could rest, but Bak’tol was not going to be easily persuaded of that fact. He smiled at the Governor. “What I’ve figured out is that I really need to meditate. Now, if you’ll excuse me, we’ll speak later.”
“I want to know what he told you!” Bak’tol demanded.
“You will find out soon enough.”
“When?”
“Later.”
The Jedi nodded to his Padawan, who with a small wave of his hand, opened the door that led to their room. The two Jedi walked through the door, leaving the fuming Governor on the other side. Once the door closed, Obi-Wan realized that he was about to pass out. Reaching out, he clumsily grabbed at Anakin, who managed to catch him before he fell to the floor. He didn’t resist Anakin as the Padawan gently lifted him and laid him on the bed.
He felt Anakin’s hand on his forehead. The Jedi welcomed the coolness of his Padawan’s touch. “Master, you’re burning up.”
“I know. My temperature has been steadily rising since we left the Outlander’s camp.”
“Master, you can’t go on like this.”
“I don’t have a choice. I can’t let this atrocity continue. An agreement has to be reached before more die.”
He gratefully accepted the glass of water from Anakin. Obi-Wan didn’t protest when his Padawan assisted him; he wasn’t sure that he could summon the strength to hold onto the glass at the moment.
“Just let me rest for a few moments and I will be all right,” he assured the teen.
“What can I do?”
Obi-Wan smiled at the young man. Anakin was never one to sit idly by; he always had to be busy doing something. Of course, Obi-Wan also knew that if his apprentice was kept busy, the less likely it was that he would get into trouble.
“First, I want you…”
The door chime sounded and both Obi-Wan and Anakin glanced over at the door. The Jedi Master weakly grinned at the youth. “First, I want you to answer the door.”
In two long strides, Anakin was at the door and had palmed it open. “Master, it’s Bant and Garen!” he excitedly announced.
Obi-Wan forced himself to sit up to greet his two friends. They had been expecting Bant, but Garen’s arrival was a welcome surprise. The Jedi weakly grinned as Anakin ushered them in. It was then he noticed Cerasi standing behind them as if she were trying to hide her presence. Judging by the panicked expression on her face, she did not want to be here. Obi-Wan had no doubt that she was aware that he had discovered the truth. He was not ready to speak with her yet. The Jedi had to admit to himself that he still had to come to terms with everything that he had learned. He nodded his thanks to the woman.
“Thank you for escorting Bant and Garen here,” Obi-Wan said. “You just missed the Governor. He was here to greet me upon my return.”
“Really?” Cerasi stammered.
“Yes. He was very interested in my visit to the Outlanders.”
“I’m sure he was.” She took a tentative step towards the door. “I’ll leave you to visit with your friends. I’m sure that Healer Eerin is anxious to examine you.”
“She does seem to enjoy sinking her claws into me,” Obi-Wan teased.
“Well, if you wouldn’t insist on getting yourself in such dismal situations, then I wouldn’t have to practice my wonderful bedside manner,” Bant shot back.
Obi-Wan laughed. He knew that he was in trouble the moment she set her medical bag down on the foot of his bed. The three friends quietly exchanged a few more barbs as Cerasi hastily made her exit. He had seen her leave, but he did not draw attention to the fact that she was gone. There would be time to deal with Cerasi later. Right now, he had to appease Bant and that was not going to be easy.
The Jedi Master closed his eyes against the spinning room. He felt Anakin gently help him lay back down and soon Bant was beginning her examination. He wanted to talk to Garen but a harsh glare from the Mon Calamarian silenced him.
“I wish you’d teach me that, Bant,” Anakin said. “It might come in handy some day.”
“Maybe I will,” Bant answered as she studied the Jedi Master’s vital signs. “Your fever is high and your blood pressure is too low.”
“I’m fine,” Obi-Wan tiredly argued. “Don’t worry; this thing isn’t going to get the best of me.”
“Yeah, Obi’s too stubborn to let a little virus take him down,” Garen chimed in.
“Well, he’s going to need that stubbornness, because I’m not sure what to do yet,” Bant tearfully admitted.
“It’s all right, Bant. I’ll be fine,” he assured his friend.
“You better be.”
Obi-Wan nodded as he squeezed her hand. He watched as Anakin handed Bant the bottles of medicine that Healer Rylor had left.
“The healer left these for Obi-Wan to take to help ease some of the symptoms.”
Bant studied the labels intently and shook her head. “You can’t take these.”
“I know,” Obi-Wan replied. “I didn’t take them.”
“Can you give him something to help him?” Anakin wanted to know.
“Yes, but I’m not sure how effective it will be. I really need to study this virus and learn more about it.”
Obi-Wan grinned. “I’m so glad you said that.”
“What?”
“I’ve got a perfect way for you to do just that. You can study the virus and help others at the same time.”
“What do you mean?”
“You’ll find out.”
“Obi, I’m not in the mood for games.”
Obi-Wan’s smile disappeared, his expression now pained as he looked into his friend’s worried eyes. “I’m not either.” He closed his eyes against the waves of agony that were pounding against his skull. “I need you to go to the Outlander’s camp. There you can get a first hand look at this virus and I want you to help these people. A young girl called Nuli will be expecting you.”
“You have it all worked out, don’t you?”
“Not everything.”
“All right. I’ll go, but after you’ve rested. I’m going to speak to Rylor and then I’ll check back on you before I go.”
“Fair enough. Just don’t take too long. Anakin will escort you back to the camp.”
He raised his hand to silence the argument getting ready to spew out of his Padawan’s mouth. “I know you want to stay with me, but I need you to take Bant to the camp and then you can come back. I’m not going to do anything too rash while you’re gone. I intend to rest and try to meditate.”
“Yes, Master. But please, don’t do anything until I get back. I don’t want anything to happen to you.”
“Don’t worry about me. Go and do your duty.”
“I’ll be ready when you return from talking with Rylor,” Anakin told Bant.
“I would prefer if you went with her to see Rylor,” the Jedi Master said. “It would put my mind at ease to know that you were with her.”
“Yes, Master.”
Obi-Wan watched Bant and Anakin leave and as the door closed, he turned to Garen. “Help me up.”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Garen countered.
“I’ve warned you about thinking, Garen. You shouldn’t do too much of it.”
He reached out and took hold of Garen’s arm as he pulled himself erect. Obi-Wan was grateful that Garen managed to steady him or he would probably have embraced the darkness that was threatening to envelope him and sunk back on the bed.
“Are you sure about this?” Garen asked.
“No, but I have no choice.”
“What are you going to do?”
Obi-Wan grasped onto his friend’s arm tightly as he regained his balance. “You’ll see,” he whispered.
“That doesn’t make me feel any better.”
The Jedi Master smiled at Garen. “Here’s what I need you to do…”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cerasi had never seen Bak’tol so furious. The Governor was pacing back and forth muttering to himself, cursing the Jedi under his breath. He stopped mid-stride and stared at Cerasi. “You said that you would get him to see our side.”

“There’s still time. He will come around,” Cerasi declared.

“No. He is an intelligent man and he has seen through our charade. Something must be done to stop these negotiations from going any further.”

“Perhaps if we offer him the antidote…”

“No!” he roared. “That will be my last option. Once he gets it, the Outlanders will have it. More drastic measures need to be taken.”

Cerasi swallowed nervously. “What did you have in mind?”

“I want the Outlanders destroyed. I want every one of them killed and I don’t care how it gets done. If there are no Outlanders, there doesn’t have to be any negotiations and then it doesn’t matter if your friend lives or dies.”

“But…”

“Do you have something to say?”

Cerasi shook her head. Bak’tol’s mind had been made up and there would be no convincing him otherwise. She watched as he stormed out of the room. As the door closed behind him, she sank to the floor and allowed her pent up tears to escape. What was she crying for? Were her tears for her people? Were they for the Outlanders? Were they for Obi-Wan? Perhaps she was crying for herself. Perhaps she was mourning the loss of everything that she had once held dear. Her dignity, her sense of right and wrong, her innocence, no longer existed. Where had she lost them and could she ever embrace them again?

Whoops, I missed a few posts, but I'm all caught up now!

Really have to feel for everyone involved. Obi-Wan with finding out that someone he dearly loved has been involved in genocide, Cerasi, stuck between a rock and a hard place, in some ways, in others, not so much.

I really love the way you write Anakin/Obi-Wan, they actually seem like the close friends I really thought they would be in the films. Excellently done!

laugh Obi-Wan sure has a way about him, doesn't he? I love that.

So, he's sending Anakin and Bant to the Outlanders - and now the Governor is planning something. Not good! in the immortal words of Obi-Wan.

The great unanswered question - will Cerasi rediscover her principles?

Great, great update.
