Another great post! I'm astounded by how well you do the banter between Obi and Anakin. It's so natural, I can see both characters behaving in exactly the way you're showing.

Cerasi has a hard choice to make, but Bak'tol is quite a pile of steaming poodoo, ain't he? grin

Oh, this is really getting good now. If Cerasi would only go to Obi with the truth. I'm glad to see Bant and Garen have arrived and that Anakin will accompany Bant to the Outlanders' camp. Maybe he can thwart the attempted genocide.

Cerasi seems to have really lost her way. It's sad to see her be complicit or more in such treacherous and inhumane dealings. I hope she can be redeemed, so to speak. And she'd better watch herself closely lest she stir the wrath of a certain healer!

Now that Obi-Wan got the responsible parties out of the way, he's up to something and dragging Garen along with him. Somehow I don't believe he's going to rest quietly like he promised.

Great update! I'm looking forward to more.

Bak’tol is getting desperate, which I hope will only benefit the Jedi and the job they need to do.

I so admire Obi-Wan's strength and determination to finish the job he was sent to do despite his own failing health love love love

I hope Bant will be able to help the Outlanders from whatever is coming...

worried worried worried worried

Great update

Jinngerbread: Really have to feel for everyone involved. Obi-Wan with finding out that someone he dearly loved has been involved in genocide, Cerasi, stuck between a rock and a hard place, in some ways, in others, not so much.

Things are going to get more complicated.

I really love the way you write Anakin/Obi-Wan, they actually seem like the close friends I really thought they would be in the films. Excellently done!

Thank you. I'm really enjoying writing the two of them. grin

Valairy_Scot: Thank you, my dear friend. I really appreciate you taking time to proof this while Diane was gone. As for Cerasi rediscovering her principles? Who knows? wink

wolf_kenobi: I'm kind of wondering what Obi's going to do myself! wink Thanks so much for reading. I'm glad you're enjoying it!

mujapple_juicey: Thanks so much for reading. I appreciate your excitement over this story.

charie: Don't worry, I'm working on the next post! Thanks so much! hugs

Gkilkenny: Thanks. I always enjoy adding Bant and Garen. grin

JediPerigrine: I was nervous about doing Obi and Ani, but everyone has been so kind with their support of the way I write them. Thanks so much. As for Bak'tol...I'll have to agree with you! laugh

p_stotts: Oh, this is really getting good now. If Cerasi would only go to Obi with the truth. I'm glad to see Bant and Garen have arrived and that Anakin will accompany Bant to the Outlanders' camp. Maybe he can thwart the attempted genocide.

Or maybe they'll be casualties of it... whistling Thanks so much for reading.

nada_smith: Now that Obi-Wan got the responsible parties out of the way, he's up to something and dragging Garen along with him. Somehow I don't believe he's going to rest quietly like he promised.

Did you expect anything less? wink

KELIA: Thanks for your kind words. Bak'tol isn't the only who is desperate! worried

Ocelotl_Nesto: I'll be more than happy to add you to the PM list. Thanks so much for asking! hugs

Bastet: Well you know how much trouble Garen and Obi can get in to, right? grin Thank you so much for reading!

Helen_Taft: I'm so glad that you found this story. Thank you so much for reading and I'm glad you're enjoying it. I will be happy to add you to the PM list. Thanks for asking! hugs

I just wanted to thank everyone for reading this story. I'm currently working on the next post and it should be up early next week. I've been busy getting my kids ready to go back to school. This was their first day, so hopefully things will start to slow down just a little to where I can post more frequently. Thanks for your patience. Part 9

“You’re in no shape to go traipsing around the palace,” Garen declared.

Obi-Wan grinned at his old friend. He was genuinely touched by Garen’s concern for his well-being. The Force had truly blessed him with good friends that had stood by him through the years and their loyalty to him was not something he took lightly. Obi-Wan had to admit that Garen was right. He really had no business doing anything but resting, but the Jedi knew that there was too much at stake.

“Now Garen, you know that a Jedi does not traipse,” Obi-Wan teased. “A Jedi’s steps are purposeful and meaningful.”

Garen rolled his eyes. “You know what I mean. You need to conserve your energy. You need to rest and give Bant time to come up with something to help you.”

The twinkle in Obi-Wan’s eyes faded. “I have to get to the bottom of this. Too many lives depend on it.” He grabbed on to Garen’s arm as a wave of dizziness washed over him. “Sorry about that,” the Jedi mumbled.

Garen guided Obi-Wan to the nearest chair. “You can’t even stand,” he gently admonished.

“I’ll be all right in a minute.”

“How many times have you said that since you’ve been here?”

“Probably a dozen or so.”

“That’s what I thought. Why don’t you tell me what needs to be done and I’ll take care of it while you rest?” Garen suggested.

“No, she won’t talk to you.”

“Who? Cerasi?”

Obi-Wan nodded as he swallowed back the nausea that was threatening to overtake him. “I need to know the truth and I don’t think that she’s going to be very forthcoming.”

“I’ll just turn on the infamous Muln charm and coax the answers right out of her.”

“Is this the same charm that you used when you were trying to explain to Master Windu why we were out past curfew?”

“That was a long time ago. I thought that you would have forgotten about that by now,” Garen admitted, a smirk dancing across his lips.

“I don’t think I’ll ever forget that. Being forced to attend Madame Nu’s lectures on the history of the Jedi archives was sheer torture.”

“I have to agree with you there,” Garen chuckled. “It could have been worse. We could have had to listen to Master Windu’s lectures on the merits of punctuality.”

“I suppose you’re right.” Obi-Wan winced in pain. The dull ache that had been present in his skull was quickly becoming a constant source of agony. He reached out to the Force, but his grasp was becoming tenuous, which in his opinion, scared him more than the actual virus. No matter what had happened to him, the Force had been there to guide him and when necessary, provide comfort to him.

He heard Garen call out to him, his voice laced with concern and worry. “Obi-Wan? What’s wrong? Do you need me to get Bant back here?”

It was a few seconds before Obi-Wan could answer him. “No,” he finally whispered. “No, I…no. She needs to go help…the others…”

“Obi-Wan, at least take these pills that she left you to help with the pain.”

The Jedi Master weakly nodded his consent. He couldn’t take the medicine that Rylor had left him and Bant knew that. He had seen her replace the bottles with something that he could take. Obi-Wan thought that for as much as he had been in the healer’s wing, he shouldn’t be sensitive to any drugs, but of course, he never could do anything the simple way.

He held out his trembling hand as Garen handed him a pill. Obi-Wan’s cheeks flushed slightly when he realized that his friend was holding the glass of water for him. Obi-Wan did not like being fussed over, especially by those who were closest to him.

“Thank you,” Obi-Wan managed to mumble.

“Let’s get you back into bed.”

“No!” Obi-Wan sharply replied. “I’ve got to talk to Cerasi.”

“Obi-Wan, please. You’ve got to rest.”

“Help me up,” the bearded Jedi instructed.

“How about a compromise,” Garen suggested. “If you stay here and rest, I’ll bring her back here.”

“Garen, I can…”

“It’s either that, or I go and get Bant.”

Obi-Wan glared at his companion. “You’ve been hanging around Bant way too long. You’re starting to act like her.”

“I’ll take that as a compliment. So, do we have a deal?”

“Fine,” Obi-Wan sighed.

“All right. Now, get back in bed,” Garen ordered. “And if you even think about leaving this room before I get back, I will call the Temple and have Master Yoda pull you from this assignment.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” Obi-Wan promised as he slowly sank back on the bed.

He closed his eyes and placed his arm across them, blocking out the obtrusive light that seemed to be compounding the throbbing in his head. The Jedi heard the door open and knew that Garen had gone in search of Cerasi. He silently cursed the virus that was coursing through his body. Obi-Wan didn’t know how much longer he had to live, but he couldn’t think about that right now. He had to concentrate on discovering the truth so that no one else would succumb to this disease.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bant and Anakin were almost to the outskirts of the city and would reach the camp of the Outlanders within a couple of hours. She had finally calmed down after her less than productive meeting with Healer Rylor. He had not been very forthcoming in providing her with any information that could help Obi-Wan. He continued to deny that there was a cure, despite her constant prodding. She had learned what to expect from the various stages of the disease and the symptoms that were associated with each one.
She looked over at Anakin, who had barely spoken since they began their trek to the Outlanders. Bant was worried about him. The teen was distraught over his Master’s condition, but was doing his best to maintain the façade that he was handling everything as he should. Bant had seen Obi-Wan wear the same impassive expression before whenever Qui-Gon was facing mortal danger and she had been able to do little but provide unconditional support for her friend.
“He’s not going down without a fight,” she encouraged the youth.
Anakin shrugged and then nodded his head. “I know.”
“Obi-Wan’s too stubborn to let something like this get the better of him.”
Silence was followed by another nearly imperceptible nod. “I know.”
“Anakin…”
“Why do you think he sent me away?”
Bant stopped in her tracks, a mixture of surprise and confusion evident on her salmon features. “What?”
“Why do you think he sent me away? Do you think it’s because he doesn’t want me to watch him die?”
The Mon Calamarian smiled at the young man. In so many ways, he was like Obi-Wan. Confident, capable, and strong in the Force and yet every once a while, their insecurities would peek through their stoic shield. “No, Anakin. He sent you away because he had faith that you would do what needed to be done. He sent you to protect me and to help the Outlanders. I promise that he wouldn’t do that to you. You should know that by now.”
“I guess I do. I’m just so worried about him. I’ve never seen him this sick before. I know he tries to hide how bad he’s feeling, but I can sense it. It’s getting to where he can’t block his pain from me. I’m having to block it myself just to concentrate on what I’m supposed to do.”
She gently placed her hand on his shoulder and squeezed it lightly. “I know. You two have such a strong bond. Sometimes I think it’s stronger than the one he shared with Qui-Gon.”
Anakin’s face lit up. “Do you really think so?”
“Sometimes,” she replied. “You have to remember, it took a while for Obi-Wan to earn Qui-Gon’s trust, especially after Melida/Daan.”
“It’s kind of ironic, isn’t it?”
“What’s that?”
The teen shook his head. “It’s not important.”
“What is it, Anakin? What were you going to say?”
He shrugged his shoulders. “It just seems that once again, that Cerasi’s ruining my Master’s life.”
“I’m not defending Cerasi and what she has done, but Obi-Wan made the decision to stay on Melida/Daan. Her friendship and the loyalty he felt to her possibly aided him in his decision, but the decision was his.”
She reached out and playfully tugged on his braid. “I know that you are fully aware of the fact that Obi-Wan isn’t perfect. He’s human and humans make mistakes. Melida/Daan was one of those mistakes. It was a costly one and it taught Obi-Wan a lesson that he’ll never forget. He still bears those scars.”
“I won’t add to his burden,” Anakin vowed. “I’ll do everything I can to make it lighter.”
“I know you will. He is fortunate to have you as a Padawan.”
“No, I’m the one that’s grateful to have him as a Master. He’s taught me so much. I will honor his training by doing what he instructed me to do.”
“That would make him so proud.”
“I don’t like disappointing him and I’m not going to start now.”
“He’s always been proud of you.”
Anakin smiled at the healer. “Thanks, Bant.”
“You’re welcome. Now, let’s not keep Nuli and the others waiting.”
The two continued to walk in companionable silence. Bant was silently praying to the Force that Obi-Wan’s obstinate nature would prevail. She didn’t know what would happen to Anakin if the Jedi Master died and he didn’t get to say goodbye. The healer cleared those thoughts from her head. She had to think about the task that lay before her. Obi-Wan was depending on her knowledge to help these people and she had no idea where to begin.
“We’re almost there,” the young man beside her announced.
She nodded. The pungent stench of death was in the air. Before she could reply, they were greeted by a young girl, whom Bant assumed to be the one Obi-Wan had told her about.
“You have to be Bant!” the girl exclaimed.
“You must be Nuli,” Bant said.
“That’s me. Obi-Wan said that I was to be your helper,” she proudly stated.
“That’s what he told me. I have a feeling that I’m going to need a lot of help.”
She glanced up at Anakin and caught a glimmer of mischief in his eye. “I suggest you don’t even say what’s on the tip of your tongue. You’ve been around Obi and Garen way too much.”
“What?” Anakin innocently inquired.
“Never mind,” Bant replied, turning her attention back to Nuli. “Would you do us the honor of escorting us to your camp?”
Nuli jumped up and down excitedly. “Of course I will. Katal is waiting for you.”
Bant noticed as the tiny girl looked behind them. “Is something wrong, Nuli?”
“Isn’t Obi-Wan coming?”
The Calamarian smiled. “I’m sure he’ll come as soon as he can.”
“Okay.” Nuli motioned for Bant and Anakin to follow her. “This way.”
Bant leaned over towards Anakin. “It seems that your Master has yet another fan club.”
“Yep. Must be that Kenobi charm he keeps telling me about.”
“If it’s the same thing as the Muln charm, I think I’ll pass.”
Anakin laughed. “Me too.”
The trio continued until they came to the village. Death was rampant and the sense of grief was devastating. As a healer, she had witnessed death many times, but never on this scale. She wasn’t sure what she could do for these people, but she pledged to herself that she would do something, even if it was to only make their passing from life to death more bearable.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It didn’t take long for Garen to locate Cerasi. She was sitting in the gardens alone staring across the lush foliage as an aura of hopelessness surrounded her. Garen quietly approached the woman who had yet again broken his friend’s heart. It had been a long time after Obi-Wan had returned from Melida/Daan that he could even begin to talk about Cerasi and although some time had passed, Garen knew that Obi-Wan’s heart would always carry the scar of her death.

He couldn’t begin to imagine what his comrade must have felt to learn that she was alive. Knowing Obi-Wan, he would keep his jumbled feelings to himself until he sorted them out. However, fate had not allowed him to do so. This woman that Obi-Wan had loved had betrayed him and once again, Garen knew that his friend’s heart was literally breaking in two.

Garen quelled his anger and frustration at the woman sitting before him. “I’ve been looking for you,” he finally said, hoping that the bitterness he felt towards her was not present in his voice.

“I would say that you have found me,” she solemnly answered. “What do you want?”

“Obi-Wan wants to see you.”

“I figured as much. I’m surprised that he’s not here with you.”

“He’s resting.”

She turned around to face Garen. “How sick is he?”

“Why don’t you tell me?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” she challenged.

“I think you know.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“I’m sure you don’t.”

“You don’t like me very much, do you?”

“It’s not my place to judge you,” Garen said. “All I’m doing is escorting you to see Obi-Wan.”

“I can get there myself.”

“I’m sure you can, but you might be inclined to take a detour and I can’t allow that.”

Garen took a step back as she stood up. He gestured toward the back door of the palace. “After you.”

“Obi-Wan spoke highly of you when he was on Melida/Daan. He said that you were one of his closest friends. It’s very unusual to have a friendship last as many years as yours and Obi-Wan’s.”

Garen shrugged. “That’s the sign of true friendship. Now, let’s not keep him waiting.”

The Knight was not going to allow himself to be coerced into a trip down memory lane with this woman. He was here on a mission and he was not going to fail Obi-Wan. Garen followed her into the palace and down the corridor that would lead them to Obi-Wan’s room. As they rounded the corner, the Force called out a warning to him. With one hand on the hilt of his lightsaber, he palmed open the door.

Ducking, he narrowly missed the blaster bolt that sailed over his head. Activating his lightsaber, he easily deflected the next volley of shots that came his way as Obi-Wan fell to the ground. The Jedi Master’s attackers scurried out the window, leaving Garen and Cerasi to huddle over the too still form of Obi-Wan.

Whaaaaaaat!

Uh, back to the story, not the ending.

I won’t add to his burden,” Anakin vowed. “I’ll do everything I can to make it lighter.”

“I know you will. He is fortunate to have you as a Padawan.”

“No, I’m the one that’s grateful to have him as a Master. He’s taught me so much. I will honor his training by doing what he instructed me to do.”

“That would make him so proud.”

“I don’t like disappointing him and I’m not going to start now.”

“He’s always been proud of you.”

Anakin smiled at the healer. “Thanks, Bant.”

I really like this Anakin and of course everyone else.
