Impact

“She hasn’t made a sound since you brought her here.” The man’s voice was puzzled when he spoke.

“Poor little thing,” the woman replied. “Can’t say that I blame her.” She reached down and brushed the dark curls that haloed the little girl’s head. “It’s a miracle she’s alive.”

The child looked to be completely still, at least until one noticed the subtle trembling that gripped her. One thumb was securely in her mouth as she gazed up at them. Her face was round and lovely, even with the grime that was streaked across it.

The man frowned at his companion. “Maybe you shouldn’t have taken her,” he said softly. “There’s a reason she was in that place. Besides, it wasn’t any of our business.”

“Leave her there?” the woman asked indignantly. “Since when did you have your heart removed, Udré Ekiam?”

Udré held up his hands and took a step back. “Sheath those claws, Melanah!” Then he grinned and pulled her into an enthusiastic embrace. Nuzzling her neck, he whispered, “You know I’m just watching out for you, love.”

Melanah sighed and rested her head on his chest. “And you know I couldn’t leave her there,” she chided gently.

He folded his arms around her and laughed. “I know, love, I know. I’d have wondered where my Melanah went if you had.” Udré turned to look at the tiny girl who was studying them so solemnly. “Still…”

Melanah pulled free of his arms irritably. “Still nothing, Udré.” She knelt down and cradled the little face. “She’s all alone in the galaxy, and it would be a hard-hearted being that could have left here there in the middle of all that destruction.”

Udré came to stand beside Melanah. “I wonder what made the troopers turn on the Jedi?”

“Never trusted those troopers,” Melanah muttered. “Clones,” she snorted. “What kind of army is that?”

He paused and then knelt down in front of the little girl as well. She was about a year old, if his memory of his siblings was any guide. Barely walking, she was tiny and shy. Or shell shocked, he thought grimly. Udré glanced at Melanah, who had her eyes narrowed and her lips pressed together. He almost smiled, but knew that would only make her angry. Gods, he loved her.

“I saw what they left behind. They pretty much destroyed the whole place and blew that Jedi to bits,” he said pointedly.

“Hush your mouth,” Melanah scolded, putting her hands over the little girl’s ears.

Udré rolled his eyes, but nodded his agreement. “I expect this little one was going to the Temple on Coruscant.”

“It doesn’t make any sense,” Melanah said. “We don’t have any troopers here.”

“We didn’t,” he corrected. “There was that big transport that came in early this morning – and it was carrying a bunch of those clone things. They headed straight for town.”

“Why was there a Jedi here?” Melanah wondered, her gaze wandering back to the silent little girl.

“I’m guessing that she was here to collect the little one,” Udré replied with a shrug. “That’s what the Jedi do, isn’t it? Take younglings to their Temple and make ‘em into more Jedi?”

“You sure know a lot about Jedi, especially since you’ve never seen one before today,” Melanah replied with a smirk.

“I’ve heard the stories,” he protested. “Same as you.”

“We both know half of what you hear ain’t true and the other half is exaggerated,” Melanah retorted.

“I’m just saying…”

“Well don’t talk until you’ve got something sensible to say,” Melanah suggested.

Eager to change the subject, he fell silent for a moment. “Should we try and find her parents?” Udré asked at last. “I mean, they must be thinking she’s dead.” He got to his feet, trying to ignore the feeling he got when he saw Melanah with the little girl in her arms.

Melanah considered his question for a moment, a thoughtful frown on her face. He trusted her opinion; he had always freely admitted that she was much smarter than he was. Besides, she had a real knack for cutting straight through to the heart of a matter.

“No,” she finally replied decisively. Their eyes met. “We have no idea where to start, if she’s even from this planet, much less anywhere nearby.” Her eyes flickered once more to the little girl. “Besides, we start asking questions, we could end up in a very awkward situation.”

“Like troopers sticking their noses into it,” Udré guessed.

She nodded. “Exactly.” Melanah sighed deeply. “And they’ll probably kill the kid and us for getting mixed up in their business.”

“But what exactly is their business?” Udré asked. “I mean, killing the Jedi? And then her…” He pointed to the girl, who surprised them both by pointing back.

Melanah laughed. “She’s telling you not to talk about her like she’s not here.”

“She’s just a baby,” he said. Leaning forward, he brushed some of the dirt off her cheek. “Just a baby…”

“And alone in the galaxy,” Melanah reminded him again.

He turned and shook his head. “You aren’t thinking what I think you’re thinking are you?” Udré frowned. “There’s got to be lots of places across the galaxy to take in orphans, especially since the wars began.”

“That’s exactly my point,” Melanah said.

“What? I’m not following you.”

“Who runs those places?” she asked.

Udré shrugged. “I don’t know, governments I guess.”

“And who is control of the troopers that wanted to kill her?”

“Government,” he said. “No wonder they don’t know who they should be shooting.”

“And what do you think will happen to the little one here if we dump her off at an orphanage?”

“She’ll get a family?” he guessed.

“Unless the figure out that the Jedi wanted her,” Melanah said. “And who knows what they’d do to her then?”

“She’s just a baby.”

“And she can’t defend herself,” Melanah said. “So it’s up to us to do that for her.”

“We don’t have any idea of what to do with a kid,” Udré pointed out reasonably.

“We both have kid brothers and sisters, don’t we?” Melanah said indignantly. “Are you saying two grown-ups can’t figure out how to take care of one tiny little girl?”

“Even tiny little girls can be a handful,” Udré said dryly.

“Yeah well, so can you, and I love you anyway.”

“But that’s because I’m adorable and a good cuddler,” he said with a smirk.

Melanah gently embraced the little girl, who gave a small sigh of contentment and then melted into her arms. “She cuddles just fine, thank you.”

Udré shook his head and heaved a sigh. “All right, all right, I get the holo,” he said. “She’s coming with us.”

“We can’t stay here,” Melanah murmured as she stood up with the little girl in her arms. “It’d be safer for all of us to find a new place.”

“We’ve been here long enough,” Udré agreed. “Besides, I’m thinking that maybe the Core isn’t the best place to be right now.”

“I’ve always wanted to see the Outer Rim,” Melanah said with a smile.

“It could take us a while to visit all those planets.”

“Years,” Melanah agreed. The little girl looked up from Melanah’s shoulder and gave Udré a shy smile.

“We’ve talked about having a family,” he said suddenly, reaching out to brush his knuckles across the girl’s soft cheek. Tilting his head, he studied her. “She looks a little bit like you. Isn’t that funny?”

Melanah smiled. “It’ll save awkward questions, and that’s all I care about.”

“So I guess… I guess she’s ours,” Udré said, giving Melanah a questioning glance.

She nodded. “I guess she is.”

“We’ve gotta name her,” Udré said. “Can’t call her little one or kid for the rest of her life.”

The little girl stared at them with dark, solemn eyes, her thumb back in her mouth. “How about…” Melanah smiled. “How about Gem? Gem Ekiam…it’s got a nice ring to it.”

Udré thought about it and then nodded. “Gem it is,” he agreed. “Our own little Gem.”

He leaned down and gave Melanah a kiss. Then Gem reached up and patted Udré’s face. “She likes me,” he said proudly.

“She’s got good taste, our Gem,” Melanah observed.

“Come on, let’s get out of here,” Udré said with a slight shiver. “I won’t feel safe until we’re out of this system.”

“What about supplies for Gem?” Melanah asked.

Udré felt something warm unfurl inside of him. How easily the little girl had become Gem, and how right it felt. Strange how a man’s life could change in an instant, he thought. Strange and wonderful.

“We’ll make do with what we’ve got on the ship,” he said. “Next system over, we’ll stock up and then head for the Outer Rim.” He kissed Gem’s forehead. “Gotta keep this little one safe.”
