Wow! The conversation between Obi and Qui was intense and well written. I could easily sense both men's angst and turmoil. Beautifully done! I'm sitting on the edge of my seat to see what happens between them next. Don't keep me waiting too long! praying

Never underestimate Master Yoda! shame_on_you Loved it. tongue

"Hmmph…too much pride have you to consider mending fences."

Sorrow filled eyes met Yoda's. "When it comes to him, I have no pride left."

A slight smile graced Yoda's features. "Speaking like a true parent you now are. Pride has no place when seeking reconciliation with those who mean the most."

Oh so true! applause

monkeykelci Gah! I just want to reach out and hug poor Obi-Wan. He and Qui need to settle this. It's not going to get any better for either of them 'till they do. I loved it, Bek! Very nice update!

Thanks, I’m glad you’re enjoying it! happy

Valairy_Scot This is so wonderful and so human and I love every word of it.

Thanks! happy

Devious that Yoda is - and I love it.

He’s up to his ole tricks again! grin Seems his work is never done when these two are involved.

Yeah, and wonder why? It still means something to them both, it does, that's why.

Obi-Wan has tried over the years to distance himself mentally from his former master but has not had much success.

Its about time Qui-Gon understands how his words affected Obi-Wan - really understands from Obi-Wan's perspective.

Qui-Gon’s ready to listen now, whereas before he only wanted Obi-Wan to see his side.

I think this may become one of my favorite stories on the boards. Not one false emotion or word out of place, just two people who love each other and so can really hurt one another - and perhaps with the help of a devious Jedi master - heal each other.

Thank you for the kind words; they are very much appreciated! happy

dianethx Poor Obi-Wan and poor Qui-Gon. I liked that Qui-Gon admitted that the scene in the Council chamber forced him to realize that Obi should be knighted. Sounds like he didn't want to let his 'son' go and it made things more awkward and painful. The ones you love are often those who can hurt you the most.

Qui-Gon’s eyes were finally opened as to what was best for Obi-Wan and what was best for Qui-Gon: hanging on longer than he should have instead of allowing his padawan to move forward. Only the means of epiphany came at a great cost.

I also liked that Obi-Wan admitted he wanted to hurt Qui-Gon. But it's time for both of them to let it go and hopefully regain a little of what they had together.

They may have to agree to disagree. But then again…. happy

Good job.

Thanks! I have very much enjoyed writing this.

charie Perfect! I felt so much for them both. They really love each other like a father and son and are both hurt and angry with each other.

Those we love are the ones who hurt us the most! happy

It was funny also! Yoda is up to his tricks.

He does tend to interfere when it comes to Jinn and Kenobi. grin

I could see you make this a BIG series in this AU. Hint. Hint. All I can say is MORE MORE! Please!

There is room for exploration, but at this time I haven’t decided whether to pursue it. But you never know. wink

(I'm glad there is no mention of a beard)

I don’t particularly care for the beard. I like him better clean shaven! tongue

Gkilkenny Their confinement in the lift, thanks to Yoda, may get them talking.
Nevertheless, if Yoda doesn't rescue them soon they might begin to fight.

Hmmmm…. thinking Possibly.

The tension is in the air.

Definitely. worried

Beautifully written.

Thank you! blush

jedidas3 That conniving little troll!

It was one in the same that got our favorite team together in the first place, so go easy on him. tongue

Thank you for your kind words. happy Since they’re covering the main topic in TPM, it seemed right to maybe throw some of the Jedi Apprentice books in there too – but only so far and so much. I’m glad this isn’t just a repeat of the wonderful fics others have written on this subject. It’s a relief that it stands on its own and is unique in itself. Thanks again!

ZaraValinor Oh, those boys. They need therapy to work out their issues.

Yoda has forced them into self counseling. Whether that’s a good idea remains to be seen. mischief

Loved it. Hopefully more soon!

Thanks! Next and final part coming right up. happy

VaderLVR64 Never underestimate Master Yoda!

He always gets his man! laugh So to speak, of course!

Loved it.

Thank you!

Part 3

“Is that why you stayed away from Coruscant for the last five years?”

“I indulged myself in a selfish act. For the first time in my life, I put what I wanted above everything and everyone. I was ashamed of what I had done: excluding you from the Knighting Ceremony. It was easier to stay away, to transfer to another Temple, to travel from one system to another helping others, than it was to think of coming back here and facing you.”

“You were taught that running away never solves anything.”

A bitter chuckle. “No, it doesn’t.”

X

Several more hours followed with neither speaking, each lost in his own thoughts.

X

“You we’re going to saddle me with Anakin’s care and training. I was a Padawan, for force sakes. But I would have done it; I would’ve trained him to please you, if no other reason.”

“You know I have never asked anything of you unless I believed you were capable to handle it. And even in those circumstances where we had to improvise, I always gave you the tools you needed to accomplish the task.”

“You trained me for twelve years; you raised me. And all you could speak of as you lay dying was that Anakin needed to be trained. Was there nothing else you could have said? Nothing else, knowing it could have been the last time we spoke?”

“Time is a precious commodity, Padawan. And it is something that we don’t often have much of.” When Obi-Wan remained silent, Qui-Gon continued. “What do you think would have happened to Anakin if I had not tried to secure his care? He was on unfamiliar territory; he had no one else. And if he had been sent back to Tatooine, the very people who enslaved him may have done so again. And knowing the Sith had returned, what would have kept them from discovering him if he were not under the protection of the Jedi or a suitable replacement?”

When the room seemed to tilt, Obi-Wan closed his eyes trying to block out the visual reminder that the walls were too close, the space too small. He concentrated on the voice in beside him, his breaths deepening to an even level. The Jedi took no offense to what others may have perceived as disrespect; he knew from experience that Obi-Wan was listening to every word.

Qui-Gon moved over and sat down in front of his former student, one leg tucked under him and the other bent at the knee at chest height, his arm loosely wrapped around it. “Many times the choices I have made were thought to be on a whim, another one of my so called ‘pathetic rescue attempts’ as many have termed them: including my own apprentice at the time. But in every circumstance, the situation was thought through from every angle. And those decisions were always meditated upon first, even when it didn’t appear to be the case. I’m not as reckless as many would make me out to be, Obi-Wan. Opinionated and stubborn perhaps, but I think in the latter I may have competition.”

The younger man’s eyes opened, focusing on his former mentor. “You definitely win in the obstinate arena. When you have your mind set on something there’s no reasoning in the galaxy that can change it.” The younger half smirked. “I don’t think I even come close.”

When Obi-Wan leaned his head back against the wall behind him and closed his eyes again, Qui-Gon asked, concern bleeding through the words. “How have you managed with this on your own?”

An amused chuckle escaped the young Jedi as he half opened his eyes to focus on his former mentor. “It’s been interesting to say the least.” He took a deep breath and released it. “It’s normally not this difficult, but then I haven’t been confined like this in quite some time.” He pulled his legs up to his chest and rested his arms over them. Looking to change the subject away from the close quarters they were currently in, he mentioned, “I heard that you had Anakin broke into the Council mission files.”

Startled at this revelation, the Jedi Master cleared his throat. “The Council refused to answer my questions, so I found another way.”

“And in doing so put your padawan at risk for a severe reprimand not to mention the discipline you’d receive.”

Needing to understand some of the things he had read while illegally searching through Obi-Wan’s files, he asked, his voice somewhat quiet. “Why did you accept those assignments? You were trained as a negotiator.”

“You know as well I do that negotiation only goes so far. And when it’s no longer an option, then what? Sometimes, aggressive negotiations are needed to make them see reason.”

Qui-Gon was appalled by the knight’s response. “So it's true then. What exactly have you done to persuade those that would refuse to sign a treaty?”

“Not that it’s any of your concern but all my methods have been humane, unlike some of those I’ve witnessed while in the program.”

“Jedi do not use force! We guide, protect, and help.”

“Then it’s another thing to add to your long list of how I’ve disappointed you.”

“Why did you take them?”

“Why do I do anything?”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only one you’re going to get.”

X

The only noise to permeate the stillness around them came from the air circulation vents above them.

X

Having thought over all they had said during the course of the last hours, Qui-Gon put voice to the thoughts running through his mind. “When we found Anakin, it had not been my intent to train him personally." He swallowed before continuing. "I thought once the Council tested him, they would see what the force had shown me; I was sure of it. With the evidence of his midichlorian count and the natural, untrained power that emanated from him, it was imperative he be trained to use it in its proper respect. I thought once they agreed to his induction into the Temple, he would be chosen by a suitable mentor. It wasn’t until they refused that I felt the need to make certain that Anakin’s future was secure. Regrettably it was at the cost of our relationship; it was never my intent to hurt you. What I said was true: you were ready for the trials. What every padawan doesn’t understand is that the trials aren’t necessarily a set of standardized tests. They often come in the form of real life situations and more often than not occur on a mission when the apprentice is unaware. Facing the Sith and staying true to your heritage was more superior a trial than even the Council could have given you. And that is why I fought so adamantly against you taking them when we returned. In my opinion, it was a waste of your time. You had already proven that you deserved to be a Knight.”

A tired sigh escaped from the young Knight. “I needed to take them for me, and the fact that you couldn’t give me that….” He shook his head trying to formulate the words he wanted to say. “The Council understood: Master Windu helped me prepare for the trials in your stead while you were prematurely playing mentor to Anakin. It should have been you. You were my master. Your responsibility to me had not ended just because you thought it should have. And the fact that you had not intend to take the boy from the beginning doesn’t take away from the last five years. As you said…I know you, Qui-Gon; I know how you think. You always have a back up plan, whether it’s to trust the force to provide a solution or to actually have a course of action. It wasn’t by happenstance that you rushed me into Knighthood so you could train your Chosen One or the fact that your thoughts were consumed by him in what could have been your final moments.” Obi-Wan rubbed at his forehead. “I once thought that my faith in the force could never be shaken…until all of this happened. Now, I just don’t know.”

Although he had some good points that he could have made, Qui-Gon held his tongue, thinking over the words that Obi-Wan had just spewed. The young man was right. For so long he had felt the force leading him to a specific moment, and it was that moment in the Council chamber when the council refused Anakin’s training that he felt the force urging him to step forward. But what did it mean? How could the force choose the boy over a young man who had served it faithfully for the entirety of his life? A young man whose very nature was saturated in the light, a young man in whom the force delighted, reflecting through his personality and way of being. A young man who gave what the force asked without complaint simply because he trusted it above all else. Could that very force in turn betray the devotion that Obi-Wan had given it by prompting the padawan’s own master to chance training another when Obi-Wan’s own apprenticeship had not yet been completed? Or was it an old master’s faulty perception that had caused the ruin of one of the Order’s best teams? The last thing Obi-Wan had said was what concerned Qui-Gon the most.

"Is that why you went looking elsewhere for training? Because you lost faith?" He questioned in a near whisper.

Obi-Wan shook his head and placed one of his hands over his eyes, massaging his closed eyelids. "I didn't go looking; they came to me." His hand fell limply to his lap. "The Bedim have been watching me ever since you took me as your apprentice. But they didn't dare approach because you had previously made it perfectly clear that you did not agree with their methods and would not accept their interference a second time. So they waited until I was Knighted: I was cleared to make my own decisions."

"Knowing how I felt, why did you agree to accept their instruction?"

"Knowing how I felt about the trials, why did you deny me?"

"I've already explained that."

"Not to my satisfaction you haven't."

"Who trained you?"

Obi-Wan chuckled but there was no humor in the sound. "Can you possibly take another disappointment?"

Qui-Gon sighed. "Xanatos, then."

The younger man nodded but said nothing further.

The Jedi Master realized that arguing about his second pupil’s capacity to train anyone would only serve to alienate Obi-Wan further, so he approached it from a different angle. "Just don't abandon all you have learned because of the mistakes I've made. The force is the one thing we can always count on even when we don't understand its logic. Don't lose faith in the essence that has sustained you your entire life."

"If it's any consolation to you, I didn't always use their methods." A brief self-mocking laugh escaped his lips. "My last two missions are proof enough of that."

X

The silence that stretched the next few hours was almost suffocating.

X

“Do you think anyone’s missed us by now?” The younger Jedi asked, wanting to change the topic so to steer clear of the past.

Qui-Gon smiled to himself, deciding to go along with the subject change. “I would hope someone is looking. Anakin’s still shielding; Yoda appears to be preoccupied.”

Obi-Wan turned toward Qui-Gon. “What about Masters Callen or Jai?”

“They’re out on missions and won’t be back for another few weeks. And as you mentioned earlier, friendship bonds only allow so much.”

Remembering something, Obi-Wan half chuckled, murmuring to himself. “I wouldn’t be surprised if this were a set up.”

Having heard the quietly worded comment, Qui-Gon asked, “What do you mean?”

“Garen told me that the council wants us to make amends. They supposedly need one of their best teams back in working order.”

“And I bet Yoda’s at the helm.” Qui-Gon surmised.

“The question is could he get everyone else to team up against us?”

“Anakin would gladly follow anyone into a prank if it's at my expense; that explains his shields. What about your age mates?”

“Garen and Bant maybe, but I don’t think Siri and Reeft would have gone along with it. That’s probably why they’ve been sent across planet.”

“It appears as though we have a conspiracy.”

Obi-Wan stretched his legs out in front of him to loosen cramped muscles. “Troll! He knows I don’t like tight quarters.”

Qui-Gon laughed heartily. A genuine laugh filled with amusement, contentment and too long of being cooped up. “He’s only trying to help, Obi-Wan. He probably thought your dislike of small spaces would help somehow.”

When the Jedi’s laughter was nearing completion, Obi-Wan continued in a matter of fact way. “Perhaps I’ll take a nice long vacation without his permission. After all, I now know someone who can infiltrate their data banks.”

“Be careful, young one, you just might become a maverick like your former master.”

Obi-Wan groaned in mock horror. “Force help me!”

X

The temporary respite of mirth died down and tranquility ensued.

X

“So we’re back to square one. Do we work as colleagues: acquaintances that happen to work well together, or as the former master/padawan team we once were?”

“You’re not going to let this go are you?”

Qui-Gon shook his head and stood, stretching his legs and arms. “I’ve come to understand the sooner we get this worked out, the more likely we are to get out of here.”

Obi-Wan looked at his former mentor with a somewhat confused expression, as he thought over his words. When his eyes lit up with understanding, he asked, “What is it you want Master Jinn?”

Surprised by the sincerity of the question, Qui-Gon took his time in answering. “I would like to once again have the closeness of friendship I shared with my former apprentice. I want to leave the past where it belongs and start anew from here. The question is do we both have the strength to try again?”

Obi-Wan’s bottom lip minutely trembled before he tightened his lips into a thin line, something that would have been missed by anyone else; he looked away. He quickly closed his eyes when the walls seemed to move in. Coming to a conclusion, he looked back at the Jedi Master and replied, “I do if you do.”

Squatting down in front of the younger man, Qui-Gon unconsciously reached out through the force towards Obi-Wan. When he made contact through a long dormant bond, their eyes widened in surprise.

“I was under the impression it had been severed at my Knighting.”

“Master Yoda certainly has his own point of view; it’s still there…” The elder man’s eyes took on a distant look. “But different.”

“Different how?”

Qui-Gon mentally smiled. Obi-Wan’s question reminded him of their past, when a then new padawan questioned everything he didn’t yet understand. “I guess that’s something we’ll learn as we go.”

A sense of peace and contentment permeated the air around them, and yet there was still the slightest amount of tension.

Obi-Wan gave voice to the truth surrounding their tentative truce. "This is merely a beginning, Qui-Gon; there's more to consider, to work out."

His former mentor nodded in agreement. "I know." The smile blooming on his lips was hesitant. "But even this cautious start is more than I could have asked for."

The lift lurched, jostling both occupants to one side and then the other.

“I guess it’s fixed.”

“It was never broken, Master.” Obi-Wan stood and began gathering the items he had discarded for the sake of comfort. “C’mon, we’d best be presentable when the doors open.”

The elder Jedi paused in hearing the honorary title spoken from someone he had thought to never hear it from again. Shaking himself out of the stupor he found himself in, he leaned down and began picking up the pieces of his uniform. Working on getting his tabards and belt back into place, Qui-Gon muttered, “If that troll has a smirk on his face, I’m gonna kill him.”

“Now, now Qui-Gon. Vengeance isn’t the Jedi way, or so I’ve been told.” Was the cheeky response from across the lift.

Picking up his cloak, the other replied, “I knew my words would one day come back to bite me in the –”

“Master?!”

When Qui-Gon turned to find out why he had been interrupted, he saw the elevator doors had opened and the group they had discussed contacting all day was standing in the corridor with smiles on their faces.

Yoda rapped his stick on the ceramic tile to gain Jinn’s attention. “What was that you were saying, Padawan?”

Every one has faults and sometimes it does take others
to help you find peace.
Their confinement was believable and the end result a beginning.

Wonderful story applause and brilliant ending.

I am sure they will argue again, only this time Obi-Wan
is stronger and will argue back laugh

A total reconciliation might take time, but in the end it could lead to a stronger team than before..... and if Palpy's still plotting they'll be needed. Force bless that devious little troll! Yoda rocks! Many thanks for the story, you showed that despite everything the boys were still connected despite the estrangement. happy

He never really explained to Qui-gon why he went in that direction. I loved this story and would love to read more! blush Pleeeease! cry praying

At least they were able to understand each other even if they didn't agree with the methods or the reactions.

Surprised by the sincerity of the question, Qui-Gon took his time in answering. “I would like to once again have the closeness of friendship I shared with my former apprentice. I want to leave the past where it belongs and start anew from here. The question is do we both have the strength to try again?”

He quickly closed his eyes when the walls seemed to move in. Coming to a conclusion, he looked back at the Jedi Master and replied, “I do if you do.”

They both wanted to heal and this is a good start. I hope that Obi-Wan has enough of his own back that he can tell Qui-Gon to stop being an idiot when necessary and vice versa.

Great job.

Squatting down in front of the younger man, Qui-Gon unconsciously reached out through the force towards Obi-Wan. When he made contact through a long dormant bond, their eyes widened in surprise.

That was wonderful! I don't know what else to say. love applause

If you have to choose between tears and laughter, remember that laughter burns more calories.
