ZaraValinor Oh, beautiful and I'm so happy they have decided to forgive one another. It's never so easy when your ideals pull you away from the people you love. But there is always forgiveness and reconciliation. Again, wonderful.

Thank you! This little fic was fun to write. happy

Gkilkenny Every one has faults and sometimes it does take others to help you find peace. Their confinement was believable and the end result a beginning. Wonderful story and brilliant ending. I am sure they will argue again, only this time Obi-Wan is stronger and will argue back.

Thanks! happy He's no longer the padawan who follows his master's rules. wink

Teresa An excellent story! I'm crossing fingers and hoping for more, because this au has loads of possibilities! A total reconciliation might take time, but in the end it could lead to a stronger team than before..... and if Palpy's still plotting they'll be needed. Force bless that devious little troll! Yoda rocks! Many thanks for the story; you showed that despite everything the boys were still connected despite the estrangement.

Yoda put too much time in getting these two partnered up to have them turn away from each other over something that could be worked through. wink

I'm happy you enjoyed it! I definitely had fun writing it.

jedidas3 A wonderful update...I'm glad that they found the ability to forgive...that is often hard to do. But, what do you mean this is the final addition? There must be more! Great job with this!

They had too close a friendship to not forgive. happy Thank you for the kind words, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Final addition as in, last one, no more after this, complete…. grin

charie More please. They have a tentative truce, as you said. They could be sent on a mission and see what happens. Obi-wan taking on different kinds of missions sure sounds interesting. He never really explained to Qui-Gon why he went in that direction. I loved this story and would love to read more! Pleeeease!

Those are quite a few possibilities. I'll think about it, but I can't promise anything. wink

BrightFeather *sniff* You mean there isn't any more?

Uh, worried would the words 'I'm sorry' suffice? sad

ClaudiaR WHAT?? You can't end it there!!! I need more!!!!!!!!!!! What about Xan??

mischief

dimyavie A beautiful update! But surely you can't end it there! Thanks for writing.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! happy

dianethx At least they were able to understand each other even if they didn't agree with the methods or the reactions. They both wanted to heal and this is a good start.

They've still got a lot to work out, and they've taken that first step. happy

I hope that Obi-Wan has enough of his own back that he can tell Qui-Gon to stop being an idiot when necessary and vice versa. Great job.

He has a new perspective of what he's capable of. He won't be easy to push around or walk over anymore. Thanks!

VaderLVR64 Absolute perfection! That was wonderful! I don't know what else to say.

Thanks! blush

Edit: Author's Note – I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing by trying to continue this because I don't want to mess up what is essentially a short story in its in own right. But as many have pointed out, there are many potential directions in which this could continue. I've been thinking about those possibilities and came up with an additional post.

There will be some vignettes, I'm not sure yet as to how many. They may be pieces that take place here and there (meaning they may skip quite a bit of time) or they may connect (consecutively) into an exploration of the backdrop of this story, but I haven't quite got that part figured out yet. I hope you enjoy them! happy

Part 4

Four Years Prior

Obi-Wan scanned the crowd around him; most of the patrons were deeply engrossed in idle chitchat with whomever they happen to come across. Loud, upbeat music played all around him but he paid it no mind, allowing it to fade into the background. His thoughts weren't on the moment at hand, and he thought it rather ironic that he should consider his former mentor's teaching just when he had no desire to have ever been associated with the man. He took a deep breath, holding it for several seconds before releasing it. If he were honest with himself, he would admit that he was sulking. Nothing had gone as he had imagined it – nothing. He hadn't touched the drink in front of him, merely turned the glass round and round as something to do while he mused over recent events. Giving into the urge, he heavily sighed and released the glass. He wasn’t sure why he was here; the nightclub wasn’t his scene. Tossing a few credits on the table, he stood and began the tedious task of trying to move through the too crowded room.

He made it out of the club just as night fell, the air was cool. He wrapped the long jacket he wore more tightly around him, longing for the warmth of his cloak. Not wanting to be identified for his true profession, he had opted for civilian attire. He was tired and if he were honest, he would admit to being weary as well. It had been a year since his Knighting, a year since he had been on Coruscant. The transfer to the Alderaan Temple had been relatively easy considering the argument he was sure he would receive on the matter; however, the Council had stunned him when they agreed with his decision. He had just finished an escort mission and was currently taking advantage of the few days he had before he needed to contact Coruscant with his briefing and in the process, receive another assignment.

When he reached the room he was renting for the night, he entered with just a wave of his hand: the door opening with a nudge from the force. He had begun to remove the civilian clothes he had adopted for the evening, but stopped when he heard a voice behind him.

“I never thought you one to frequent a nightclub.”

Spinning around, the young Knight brought his ignited saber up to a ready position while looking through the shadows of the room to find the perpetuator who had dared to enter his temporary quarters. A slight laugh of amusement filtered around him, seeming to come from nowhere and everywhere.

“Such dramatics, Kenobi.” A tall figure dressed in black emerged from the darkened corner.

Obi-Wan flicked a hand toward the light switch illuminating the room. Giving his intruder a disgusted look, he powered down his saber but nonetheless held it tightly within his grasp.

“What are you doing here?”

“I told you he’d only disappoint you.”

“Yeah, well, you told me a lot of things. Are you going to answer my question?”

“The Bedim want to make you an offer.”

Obi-Wan shook his head. “Not interested.”

“Is that you talking or Jinn?”

The Knight walked over to the door and opened it in silent dismissal of the intruder.

Ignoring the other occupant, the elder man walked over and made himself comfortable in a nearby chair. “You would be an asset to the program.”

Shutting the door, Obi-Wan took a seat on the edge of the bed. “Why now?”

“Because you’re free to make your own decisions; you’re no longer bound to Jinn’s wisdom and way of thinking.”

“And yet it would only add to the ways I’ve disappointed him if I were to accept.”

The other man nodded his agreement. “True. However, it’s time you strengthen that backbone of yours and start living the life you want instead of being his puppet.”

Angered by the words, the younger man snapped, “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Don’t I?” The shadow leaned forward. “After all, there was a time when I just a marionette on a string.”

“I was under the impression that you two had called a cease fire.”

The other man swatted his hand nonchalantly through the air. “Merely a tentative truce,” he explained, and then added with a shrug of one shoulder. “Which will be broken once he hears about this.”

“You don’t sound too concerned.”

The other smiled. “When Jinn learns to think outside the box, then I’ll think about being concerned as to whether we’re on speaking terms.”

Obi-Wan shook his head at the thought of joining the Bedim. Although the Council approved of the organization made up of various Knights and Masters alike, he also knew that their ways were not always looked upon with approval. Many of those who had chosen to openly train with the corps soon learned that their presence was not welcome among peers who believed that the Jedi Code was being mutilated for their own gain. Little did they know that the Council themselves had constructed the group some generations back, knowing that diplomatic solutions weren’t always possible.

Qui-Gon had frowned heavily upon the cluster; their ways conflicting greatly with his beliefs. And the added nuisance of his former apprentice having joined them didn’t help his opinion any. Though he had never personally worked with their kind before, he had seen the desolation they could sometimes leave behind. Many times the corps had tried to recruit his former apprentice and every time he had managed to hold them off, that is, until Telos. That fateful mission had been doomed from the start. After parting ways and thinking to never see one another again, Qui-Gon was shocked to learn of the young man’s initiation into the Bedims. He had fought many times to have the boy expelled, but Masters Yoda and Windu vouched for his sincerity in returning to the Order. Over time, the two had come to a timid truce, tentative enough to break given the right provocation.

“I’ve been Knighted. Why would I want to revert back to an apprentice?”

“I can see your facts are misconstrued.” The elder man replied. “Your standing as a Knight is valid and will be upheld; you won’t lose that achievement. However, there are some things you’ll need to learn to become one of us. One of which is additional weaponry training with what some consider to be artifacts, only used on planets that hold to primitive forms of technology.”

“Aggressive negotiations? I believe in democracy.”

“As do we. But sometimes democracy needs a little help to overcome that which would otherwise attempt to stifle it.”

The older man leaned forward. “We know with all the misconceptions out there, we have been painted in a bad light. We’re made out to be fallen Jedi who have our own agenda and have started our own campaign, but I know that you know otherwise. We have the backing of the Council. And we freely admit that there are those of us who sometimes take things too far at times, depending on circumstance. But those individuals are properly reprimanded and disciplined by the Council when they do. There’s not much we can get away with if we decide to step outside the boundaries.”

“Why did you join?”

Shrugging his shoulders, the Knight leaned back. “It suits me.”

The elder man could sense a struggle within his padawan brother. “Give us a temporary trial. You’ll learn first hand what it is we do and who knows, you may find it agrees with you as well.”

Not wanting to make a snap decision, Obi-Wan asked for time to think it over. Frustrated that the younger man couldn’t – yet – see past Jinn’s influence even to take a risk, Xanatos nevertheless agreed.

Stopping just outside the door, the Bedim Knight braced a hand in the opening to keep it from closing. “One more thing for you to keep in mind and think about.”

Obi-Wan raised an eyebrow in question.

Xanatos gave him an understanding smile. “Don’t place any blame on the kid; he’s not responsible for Jinn’s actions. Trust me…I know."

Oh, my - what a cool closing, though Obi in canon had nothing to do with the break between Qui and Xan.

The "extra-legal" Jedi knights - they of the dark shadows who walk a fine line - delightfully different and so - both I can see it and so am I horrified. Great job.

That was amazing the history of how Obi-Wan became a bedim, is very
believable.
Xanatos knows how much Obi-Wan had been under Jinns thumb.

He needs to grow and mature and be his own man.

Well done applause

Thanks for the PM. hugs

ZaraValinor Great update. You've answered some questions and left a bucket load of more. Keep up the good work.

Thanks! It’s possible those questions may or may not be answered; we’ll have to see. happy

Valairy_Scot Oh, my - what a cool closing, though Obi in canon had nothing to do with the break between Qui and Xan.

That’s why Alternate Universes are so cool! The author can create whatever alternative he or she likes! wink

The Bedim are indeed a shadowed lot. tongue

dianethx I found this one so sad for some reason. I know its back story and makes the whole piece much richer but it's still sad.

It wasn’t meant to be, but then again back stories sometimes have their own angst mixed in. happy

Glad to see that you are keeping it up.

Thanks! I hope I do it justice.

ClaudiaR Fun!!! Thanks for continuing it!

You’re most welcome! happy

Where you had left was great, but with too many loose endings. You might write in flashbacks or not following a linear continuity only as your inspiration takes you but it certainly has much to be explored and I will look forward to it!

There were a lot of questions left unanswered and that was intentional. This was kind of an experiment for me. A failed experiment, I think, because I have yet to write a short story where it didn’t turn into a full length feature. tongue I have a habit of answering the questions instead of allowing the reader to come up with their own scenarios, and I guess I’m doing it again! But that’s okay, I enjoy writing very much and sifting through the characters flaws and problems is interesting at best. happy Besides, I adore Xan and Obi fics!

I am very glad you decided to keep it up!

I’m very happy you’re enjoying it! Thank you for reading!

Gkilkenny That was amazing. The history of how Obi-Wan became a Bedim is very believable. Xanatos knows how much Obi-Wan had been under Jinn’s thumb. He needs to grow and mature and be his own man.

Whew! [wipes_brow] I’m glad Xan’s recruitment of Obi-Wan came across well. I must have done at least four rewrites/revisions before deciding on that version. happy

Well done.

Thank you! blush

Thanks for the PM.

You’re most welcome!

Part 5

The top ranking Bedim, second only to the Council, watched as the younger man entered his office, poured himself a hefty drink and sank down into one of the plush chairs across the room. When the other had filled his thirst with a drink or two, he asked, “How’d it go?”

“The offer’s been made.”

“But will he accept it?”

The man nodded. “If for no other reason than to satisfy his curiosity about what we do and who we are.”

The Jedi Master’s amusement was clearly visible in his smile. He had long watched young Kenobi rise through the Jedi ranks, waiting for the go ahead to recruit him. He was well aware of the young Knight’s reputation.

“Contact the Council. The troll’s already had the padawan on duty comm twice. I think they’re a bit anxious to hear how it went.”

“They’re just anxious to find out if they’ve successfully snared another of Jinn’s padawans.”

“I don’t recall you being snared.”

“I didn’t exactly have a choice if I wanted to return to the Order.” Xan reminded him. “It was either this or go back to Telos.”

“Do you regret it?”

Xanatos sighed and shook his head. “No. This fits.” He leaned his head back against the chair he was in and looked up at the ceiling as if trying to look through it to the many layers above. “I never felt like I belonged up there.”

“Sometimes I wonder how many of them know that we’re housed in the Temple sublevels.”

“Obviously not many.” Xan sat up and placed his glass on the table to the right of the chair. “Otherwise we’d probably have to seal all the entryways.”

X

When the holographic image of Yoda appeared, Xanatos offered a bow of respect. “Master.”

“Make contact have you?”

“Yes, Master.”

“And?”

“He’s requested some time to think it over.”

“Hmmph. Always stubborn he has been, and analytical. Too ingrained in the Code is he.”

“Imagine that. And the very one you teach to the younglings too.”

“Need sarcasm we do not! The Jedi life, depend on the Code it does but always too caught up in the rules he has been.”

“Yours and Jinn’s influence or lack of, I would imagine.”

“Ignore the first part I will. Not a bad seed is Qui-Gon, stubborn to a fault perhaps. But speak ill of my grandpadawan you will not. Bad beginning they had, better future it was. Still upset with him you are.”

Pushing back the hurt that he had hung onto for far too long, Xanatos remained silent.

“Release it you must. Only then will there be any hope of a permanent reconciliation between you.”

“He doesn’t want to forgive me, Master. He made that perfectly clear when I returned to the Order. It was his decision that placed me in the position I now find myself and yet he wonders why I disappoint him.”

“A choice you had. Return to Telos you could have.”

“And what? Regained control of my father’s wealth and power? We both know how that would have turned out. Besides, as a good faith gesture to the Council I gave it all up remember? I had nothing to go back to. Telos was being ruled by a new government or had you forgotten?”

“Still, a choice it was.”

“Besides, he already had his eye on Obi-Wan.” Changing the subject before Yoda could rehash it, he asked, “Why us? Why Jinn’s padawans?”

“Good teacher he is. Strong you all are in the force. Great asset you have become as Obi-Wan will be.”

“Are you planning to sway Anakin also?” He only half teased.

“When Knighted he is, invite Skywalker we will. Better suited to the Bedim I believe he will be.”

“Kenobi’s not cut out for this; he’s better than this ragtag group the Council put together. What exactly is your motive in all of this?”

Yoda smiled. “Not always are things as they seem. Surprise you he may.”
